  • In this ninth video in my series "Raising Beef Cattle for Beginners," I show you how some local cowboys helped me work my cows and calves this year using cattle dogs. "Working calves" can mean different things to different people, but for me, it means vaccinating, worming, and ear-notching all of my calves, and castrating my bull calves. Every year I dread this process because my cows are ornery and skittish, and I usually have to entice, cajole, or trick them into entering the cattle pens, which usually turns into a fiasco. So this year I decided to hire some guys to help me round up my cows and calves on horseback using cattle dogs. How did it turn out? Well, you'll just have to watch the video to find out!
Special thanks to Kameron Glass and Devin DeBord (and, of course, their horses and dogs) for the assist.

I have been raising registered catahoulas since the 80's. I hate most videos about cow dogs but enjoyed this one. The boys you hired were the real deal. Once again enjoyed it.

My uncle runs a huge cattle ranch in northern Nebraska. The first time I was finally asked to help I didn't know how things worked. I got to help with the castration of the young bulls and I was concerned with how it was done. How ever mother nature takes care of everything as we know. Great video great guys awesome dogs.

Growing up on our ranch we had German Shepherds, not as good as say border collies to work cattle but collies are so hyper they can be a pain and they are too small to protect themselves from predators unlike our German Shepherds, nothing messes with a pack of German Shepherds.

It doesn't look like it hurts at all when they're being castrated. How does this go?

It doesn’t really seem to affect them negatively, especially when they are young.

Are those dogs trained for voice commands? I didn’t hear any.
