My dad farmed with his brother and father. It was amazing to watch them work together. Even sorting cattle, hogs, or anything else. They worked like a well oiled machine. The didn't use shocker stuff. I rapped the animals up that much more. When sorting or loading for sale. They never fought, though they did disagree. They did it without attitudes, pride. The agreed to disagree agreeably.
Even at home, my folks did not fight or argue. I raised my son with same principles.
The funniest thing about watching my dad and uncle and grandpa, when working with a heifer with her first calf.
They bought open heifers, that proved later to be pregnant. And bred by a big bull. Big bulls make big calves. That was a rough spring. They had many of the heifers had to be pulled and vet care. But here's my dad and uncle, many men...pulling a calf on a smallish heifer. Ben is rubbing her back, baby talking her, that's OK baby, your OK, it'll be over soon. Come baby, hang in there. It was funny I pondered if later did the remember talking down a heifer?
They took good care of their livestock. Just not like manly men like they were. They were were pretty angry that the seller lied about them being open. And to be so irresponsible for allowing a big bull in the same pasture.
I'm almost 61. Daddy is 89. I still call him Daddy. Uncle Ben is funny. I treasure them. And Daddy calls me sweet-heart. Mama passed away Sept 2019. He misses her. And we try to fill his days. To serve him like we are. He sacrificed a lot. Now it's time to put him first.
They had a lots of respect in the community. And their livestock were well sought after at sale.

We are doing that work up here in deep snow, sloshy mud and COLD. Just had a freak blizzard and had 28" of snow, high winds made 4-5 ft drifts and we were out for hours in 20 below zero wind chills trying to get the herd moved down lower & closer so we could heavy feed & get them through this storm. What a nightmare! Made me happy to see you herd being able to get moved and all but WARM doing so! Hope the rest of the work goes smoothly for you too!

me thinks Buster has had an experience or two with the Brahman. In observation, Buster was trying to stay clear of those back feet but still do his job. Then when you were moving the cows with calves, Buster was a bit more relaxed and not so attentive like he was with the bull.
And did you folks see that calf kick? It was a calf about that size or a bit taller that kicked at my uncle Ben, hit him in the knuckles on his hand, and broke some bones in his hand. An itty bitty calf.
I really do like watchin' your videos. I loved the farm life. It never dawned on me way back when that I didn't just go into farming all by my lonesome instead of thinkin' about marrying a farmer.

My dad and uncle had specific pastures and even fields they put their stock cattle into. By the end of March, cow's were bred in the fall to calf where weather is generally nicer. After harvest, they will move their stock cows into fields to feed on corn that has fallen to the ground. The cows will also be given big round bales of hay. By December or January, depending on the weather, will be moved into a fallow field with timber that will give them cover from snowy weather and fresh water all year round. Spring, about March they move the stock cows closer to the barns and long sheds so cows can deliver with access to shelters. By late spring calving is done, and the move them to the east pasture. Lots and lots of grass, fresh water, and big bales of hay. This helps clean up the corn fields of corn on the ground. So crop rotation reduces volunteer corn from coming up in soybeans or hay. Corn depletes the soil of nitrogen. Cows make lots of patties. That's natural and free fertilizer and helps replenish nitrogen. But it takes a few years to replenish. Of course the feed lot from fat calves (calves about 200 to 400lbs) they feed silage in a feed lot. The calves get fat and grow up to about 1500 lbs then sell them.
The stock cows will spend all summer long in the east pasture with their babies until about August. Then they put the bulls out with the cows to breed again for next springs crop of calves. Late fall the calves from these cows are put with the fat calves to fill out before being sold late fall. That's why we move cattle around. Cows love to eat and they help clean up fields. And then to fertilize the fields at the same time. No chemicals it's all natural. When we were younger, we'd get on our ponies and help block driveways and dields we didn't want them to go. Uncle Ben drove the pickup that had a big round bales leading the cows. And Daddy drove the mule or four wheeler to pickup calves that got too tired. Fond memories. No dogs. We had a dog, but he wasn't a cattle dog. Grandpa had Cyndy, a border collie who was ancient. Just girls on ponies. Lol

The farm guy I like to watch your channel and I work on a dairy cow farm and they have 5 milk cows and I have 5 milk cows and I have trouble loading the five milk cows in the trailer and how do I make the 5 milk go In the trailer

    • @TheFarmGuy

Thank you. Do they turn around when they get close to the trailer? Make sure to have a gate behind them where they can’t run up and down and give them time.

@@TheFarmGuy Yes they do turn around when they get close to the trailer and we have a gate that we use for the cattle to go in the trailer and we try to give them time to go in the trailer and they keep turning around when they get close to the trailer and my boss told me to use a flag to get them in the trailer and to use a hotshot to them to get them in the trailer too and What should I use to get them on the trailer

    • @TheFarmGuy

@@breannaciborowski3429 definitely get after them with a flag. If they are still really stubborn and won’t go then a hot shot would be the way to go. Focus on getting the first one to go and the rest should follow
