"Battlefield 1 is definitely rooted in history. There's no alternate mix of anything else. All the stuff you see is equipment that was available. All the vehicles you see were available at this time."
    - A direct quote from Daniel Berlin, Dices lead game designer.
*PLEASE NOTE:* As mentioned at 56:55, These videos are entirely just for Educational and Entertainment purposes. We completely understand the limitations of video games but put them aside to use the games content as a tool to educate in a unique and intriguing fashion in addition to perhaps providing the research groundwork for the creation of remasters or historical rework mods like we have done in the past. We do not have anything against the otherwise fantastic developers, gameplay, atmosphere and story of this game.
    _____ Corrections _____
00:02:32: These pouches were actually not made for the MAS 36 at the moment of its adoption in the french army in 1936 as stated in the video. They are actually Cartouchières Modèle 1945. These were issued when the MAS 36 was still in use in Indochina and North Africa with the MAS 49 and later MAS 49/56, which makes them about 30 years off for the WW1 setting, even more anachronistic than originally stated.
00:06:29: The picture shown here is actually that of a M1907-15 M16, a post war 5 round capacity modification of the rifle. It should have been a picture of a WW1 era M1907-15 with the original 3 round flush fit magazine.
01:19:52: The picture shown on screen here is of a U.S. Bayonet M1917, not the M1903. The bayonet in the game is still the US 1903 bayonet, but the handle matches closer to the British P07, and it's solid wood instead of having a metal cap at the bottom, So it's actually not even correct in its own right.
    _____ Additional Innacuracies _____
01:51:36: The Ottamans should also be armed with the C96 pistol.

Ikr, if I had to guess there are 2 theories:
      1) they might have had different smaller groups working on different assets (guns, character models, environments). And as such some teams might have been more diligent about remaining historically accurate while others not so much.
      2) Upper management mightve had a hand in it and chose to have their teams develop the historically inaccurate assets for whatever reason (maybe they thought they looked “cooler”)

you can't make a battlefield game that is authentic to history. Its a video game. An authentic WW1 game would have 99% of the game being sitting in a trench and trying not to be seen by snipers with 1% if it being going over the top and getting killed instantly. Battlefield 1 has its own art direction and style which while not historically accurate feels authentic. Its sort of alternate history WW1 where the tastes of the war is still there but the soldiers look far cooler than what they did IRL and they have far cooler toys than what they had IRL. IE: every soldier has a bolt action except for two people in the team who get a pistol and a machine gun, actually scratch the latter because portable machine guns were super rare and they all demanded entire teams of people to operate.

The reason why the MP uniform looks so different is just so you can easily identify someone's class

      @TemmieContingenC 4 месяца назад +19

I just wish the uniforms weren’t butchered in campaign. I absolutely loved BF1’s campaign and still play it to this day despite the inaccuracies, but I do find it comedic how many things are off when you take off your fun glasses and put on your nitpicky one.
Still, making games is hard and I guess people just didn’t wanna make unique uniforms, gear, armaments, tanks etc. to be accurate esp for a Battlefield game - which is understandable albeit makes looking closely at character models a bit cringe.

      @@JackRogers-x9e This isn't a good argument imo.
Authentic and accurate are different. Accurate would mean portraying the war in a way that would be true to reality, including the methods used to fight it, and the events that are shown.
Historical video games should generally aim to be authentic, meaning have a veneer of truth, plausibility, looking the part, having the right atmosphere, and seeming correct even if they aren't. That's how they can balance history with fun.
No game can be truly accurate, but they can be authentic by having correct weapons, uniforms, real locations and events being portrayed, etc etc.
BF1 isn't accurate, and on a nitty gritty level it makes a lot of errors regarding authenticity as well (Weapons and uniforms/equipment which are normally based on real things from the period but altered or used incorrectly) but the presentation itself, the atmosphere, the way the war is portrayed screams WWI on every level which is why it's so close to so many people's hearts in general, and does a better job than BFV, which failed in every regard which had terrible uniforms, some pretty bad weapons, and an awful disregard to the real stories it was claiming to portray.
BF1 never once tries to write people out of their own stories like V did.

@@Eva01-jy2qu7pu9r I remember hearing somewhere that while Battlefield 1 is not historically accurate, it is historically "authentic". While it does make some minor technical mistakes, most of the more egregious ones were made for the sake of the gameplay. Sure, submachine guns may not have been nearly as prevalent in the war as the game portrays, but the game needed to add variance that not only makes the gameplay more interesting, but also allows someone with only a passing interest in history to look at this and go, "Yup, this looks like WW1."
I also think it helps that WW1 is a conflict with much less weapon diversity than WW2. Because of that, sticking things like experimental Austro-Hungarian submachine guns in Gallipoli is easily more understandable than, say, sticking an STG 44 on a Japanese-occupied island in the Pacific.

I noticed many irregularities in the depiction of the Ottoman army on my first playthrough. I was shocked by how organized and well armed the soldiers were when in fact the Ottoman army didn't even have half of the stuff depicted there. They fought with what the Germans were able to donate and with what the local factories had produced which wasn't a lot since, as mentioned in the video, the Ottoman empire wasn't industrialized or had standards in manufacturing. Also the Ottoman army did use captured and as well as outdated equipment from different fronts they were engaged in. Also you would see variations in uniforms as well since Ottoman supply lines are a disaster, especially when it comes to the Caucasus front, Mesopotamia front, the Sinai and Hijaz front. Still for being that ill equipped for the first modern war in human history the Ottomans fought through valiantly.

As an Aussie who has had gallipoli crammed down their throat since birth its very apparent the gallipoli campaign depicted in bf1 is almost entirely incorrect. I sure don't know why they put us at Cape Helles when we were busy at Anzac Beach, and the uniform is entirely wrong etc. Not taking orders from British officers for the first time is a key point about that campaign for us. We really did get dramatically screwed by the brits but not remotely like how they display it. It just seems disrespectful to everyone involved. I'm glad they did depict Gallipoli because of how the it would eventually be highly relevant to the ww2 normandy beach landings, but they seem to think it's Omaha beach from D-Day followed by the Dunkirk evacuation.
Honestly everyone praises the atmosphere of this game but it seems to almost entirely be based on WW2, which makes sense for a vehicle + infantry combat game but not WW1.

@@Quills64 Gallipoli has been taught to us since it was the nation's biggest life or death situation. But Battlefield 1's depiction of the Ottomans came a bit disrespectful to me since they depict them as a well armed force with the latest when in fact it was one of the most unorganized armies in the first world war. The Ottomans also proved one point though that to win a war it needs more than a large quantity of men, weapons and the most modern weapons of that time, that being Courage. But like a wrote, it is astonishing how the Ottomans could even fight in a war like WW1 and win or hold out attacks like that.

This is because of the MG0815, becuase it was the first heavy mass produced gun that wasnt produced in one factory, rather all the parts were manufactured by different companys and it would be assambled in another.

Hello everyone, I'm Jay. I helped work on this video, mostly by providing information regarding uniforms and gear, but other things as well here and there.
Overall proud to have been part of the team, and I'm very happy with the result!
I will say there were actually some corrections that I offered regarding certain uniforms and gear that are pointed out in the video, but they were cut down for time I'm assuming which is a shame but I'm still glad all the errors were pointed out at least!
That being said I'm going to give my two-cents regarding this game.
I love Battlefield 1 in-spite of all its flaws. It is not an accurate game, but it is a highly immersive one and, imo, it's one that tried to honour the real history and pay its respects, even if it did it clumsily.
There's a difference between authenticity and accuracy. If BF1 were trying to be accurate, it would have tried to replicate the real events 1:1, including the methods of war at the time, which wouldn't translate well to a video-game.
Video games like this should be aiming for authenticity, i.e looking the part, feeling the part, immersing you into the history, the setting, by having the correct aesthetics, etc. This can be achieved by making things represent reality in areas that don't necessarily pertain to gameplay, things like uniforms, gear, representing particular real-world environments in immersive ways, etc.
It also includes creating a weapon and vehicle roster that are believable for the time, even if exaggerated (Which I think the game mostly achieves, with some horrible exceptions like the limpet mines and things like that.)
Overall I think that BF1 is decently authentic, at least when it comes to immersion. On a nitty-gritty level, it has a lot of problems, including the particulars of environmental settings, the portrayal of uniforms and gear, vehicles and things like that, but people tend to overlook these because at a first glance you can't tell. At a first glance it looks and feels like WWI, which is what matters most generally speaking.
As the uniforms were my area of expertise we'll use them as an example for the broader point.
Dice did a pretty poor job with some of the factions, the Austro-Hungarians, Americans, and Ottomans in particular, and also had some stupid errors on other ones as well that are mentioned in the video. As we mention, these were likely done due to time restraints but it's still a shame. For the most part, the gear and uniforms we see are somewhat period appropriate, just that they appear in places that make no sense for them to do so (Such as German uniforms on the Austro-Hungarians). Obviously there are some bigger issues, like WWII y-straps and other equipment, but overall I think the character models in general still immerse you, and are infinitely better than the dogshit designs from BFV which are astoundingly awful (Including modern day plate carriers, jackets from the Vietnam war, not a single correct Desert uniform for the Brits, etc etc).
Obviously I would prefer for Dice to have been more correct when it comes to all of these nitty gritty issues, but overall I still think they did a decent job, a much better job than they did for BFV, and made a product that resonated with people and sparked an interest in a generally unexplored setting, as it did for me! If it wasn't for this game, I wouldn't be the nerd for WWI that I am today, so in-spite its flaws I'm grateful for that.
Also obviously still good to point out all the issues so that people can learn from them as well, which I hope the video achieves for all of you :)
    Cheers!

People get too caught up in whether or not it's accurate or not, and even though that can be important, the fact it's a fun game in a setting barely ever covered in FPS titles meant that it inspired an entire generation, myself included, to learn more about the First World War. To me, accuracy wasn't the important part, it's seeding that interest that makes you want to learn more, which Battlefield 1 gave me in spades. And that in and of itself is a beautiful thing, even if the game proper wasn't 100% true to the setting.
As an example, if BF1 was never made, this video would never have existed to pick apart what it got wrong, and I probably would have been just as ignorant to WW1 as I was before the game came out, so through this game's very existence I'm given the chance to learn something I had no prior interest in. This game came out during a time when COD Infinite Warfare became the 2nd most Disliked video on RUclips at the time. People were very sick of the sci-fi shooter settings and BF1 offered something much different that people (including myself) were hyped up for. Which is funny because CoD Infinite Warfare actually had a pretty good campaign but came out at the worst time ever.
I really did enjoyed BF1 at the time as trying to capture a objective in Conquest was just absolute chaotic fun at the time and I actually did tear up a bit during the Pigeon scene as it was a beautiful thing to see. Also almost everytime I picked up the Flame trooper kit, I sang "Do you believe in magic" so I can feel like Pyro from TF2.
At the time, I already knew the questionable placements of guns especially the SMGs and MGs and the "Juggernaut" armor but I didn't know much about the rest. At least the inaccuracies here didn't feel downright egregious like in BFV and Vanguard at first sight.
Another good video as always, I do hope these videos do serve as a great reference for many game developers who want to produce games set in these time periods. I also hope your next video is Call of Duty 3! I hope its a little bit easier considering it takes place during the Normandy campaign of World War II. No pressure of course lol.

On top of that, it is a very well made game with an unmatched atmosphere and sense of scale, destruction, dourness, hopelessness, and death. Not to mention its amazing soundtrack which is just the beautiful cherry on top, look me in the eyes and tell me you listend to "lacrimosa" without crying like a bitch, that song conveys the pain of war very well. 10/10 game no question, might even boot it back up and see if the servers are still kickin.
