He didn't become mainstream until Purple Rain. A friend of mine took me to a concert in 1982 to see Prince. She won front row tickets. We were 12. I had never heard of him. I was into New Wave and Pop. I'm Black. If I hadn't gone, I probably wouldn't have heard of him until 1984 when he became huge. Remember, this woman is from an older generation.
People who were around back in the 80s like myself who was a Prince fan from the go, know this is how many folks thought and talked about Prince. I was ridiculed in school because I was black and all about Prince. Now most of the haters are like, "Yeah, Prince, I love him." 🐂 💩. They were all on everything else.
I was a black kid in the 80s and everyone I knew of all colors loved Prince. It wasn;t until I became an adult I learned that black people were not feeling him like that.
