I’m amazed by the quality of all your reviews, every one of them looks like a short movie^^ + it‘s helping me decide which Lens to buy ^^ Thanks for the quality content and keep on going! ;)
Thanks so much! I appreciate that! And I’m always happy to hear that I helped someone get some great gear. Enjoy and can’t wait to see what you art your make with it!
It's wonderful for video - I loved using it. The color and contrast from this lens are incredible. The lack of manual controls made me upgrade to the G Master, but I do miss this lens from time to time.
Hey bro, i'm getting an a9 as I mainly shoot action... im getting the 200-600 & the 135 g master... now I'm curious... is this 85mm af fast enough for action on the a9 do you feel? If so, i might get it before the 135. I'll still get the 135 but I'll pick it up at a later date & lower my initial expenditure upfront. The 135 is apparently incredibly sharp and incredibly fast af
The Batis is fast on the A7iii, but I’ve never tried it on the A9. The 135 is certainly faster on the A7iii, but so is the 85mm G Master, which is my go-to mid telephoto lens right now.
@@MattJackson_RUclips After watching a couple more comparisons I can't definitely see what you mean. The optical design is near identical so I'm wondering if it's just the Zeiss T* coatings that give it the extra punch. Sony just seems a touch more flat overall
Like you I watched a ton of reviews and they are all over the place. Some reviewers say Batis is sharper and more contrasty, while others say they are identical. DXO Mark says FE is a bit sharper. One reviewer said Batis had smoother focus mechanism and one said Batis was the slowest focusing 85. In short, you can't really rely on these RUclips reviews. It is like bro science at the gym; each bro has its own muscle building theory. I just picked up Batis, because I have never owned a Zeiss less and wanted to try it, but honestly it is hard to go for Batis when FE 85 is available for about half the price.
I recently bought the new Sigma Art 105mm dg dn for product photography and beauty portraits on the face, but for portraiture in general I have more faith in Batis 85 mm. Do you think it is necessary to buy it?
If it’s the 105 F1.4, you’re in great shape for portraits. The Batis, though, is better in my opinion as far as its color rendition and contrast. If you can find one for a greet price, it’s amazing.
I just bought a used lens based on your review, I replaced the sony fe 85mm. I might have an issue with it. When I 'shake' the lens, it gives a sound like something was moving inside of the lens. However, when I attach it to camera and switch it on, this sound disappears. I have not experienced this so far wit any lens. Is this normal? Thanks.
Congrats on the new lens! And yes, that's normal - it's the lens stabilization elements that are shaking. Until the camera is powered on, they remain "loose" in the barrel.
Exactly what 'Nine Stories Creative said .. This lens is designed to shake / shift on the inside when you move it around (until it is powered on in the camera). Many people are in fear something is loose or broke when they get this lens. This is precisely is the way this paticular lens is engineered. If nothing was shifting / moving inside then it would not be correct and would be defective, you see. So not to worry .. it will not become too lose and it is not harmful ... and the lens is only functioning exactly as it should.
dodge nav in autofocus it feels natural and smooth, but it’s definitely noticeable (but not offputting) if you’re trying to keep things in the foreground. If you’re able to keep your focus area on the subject in the frame you’re in good shape.
what's your problem, man? Just going through all my videos and finding something to complain about. Relax, bro. Why don't you make a few of your own if you think you have it all figured out.
@@MattJackson_RUclips I have many decades of experience, you do not seem to have that, I am tired of newbies that tells wrong things about photography terms. I just want to have all new that are interested in photography to get it right, so reax, I have no problems. With a 85mm 1.4 Lens you get shallower depth of field with aperture 1.4 over 1.8, not more depth of field.
You clearly have a problem. These videos you have an issue with are years old and I've made a TON of mistakes along the way. it was a moment in time and I've grown a lot since putting these out. 4 years later and I just picked up this lens, just short of mint, today for $650. Not too shabby.m Nice review, amigo.
I'm buying this in a few weeks, sure hard a time making up my mind for these lens. Thanks Matt for posting.
“Nailed it” was a great moment. Very helpful m, no BS reviews man. Thank u for not taking 2 minutes with you big snazzy intro.
Thanks, Danny! I've probably gotten even more minimalist as the videos progress!
56mm sigma is my Favorite .. and Canon RF 50mm 1.8 but i want to try too 85mm

This video pushed me over the top to bite the bullet and purchase this lens! Thank you so much for this phenomenal video! Subscribed 😁

Your funny was hell! Great video! You deserve more subscribers!
Thanks Dillon! I appreciate that!
love ur production quality and enthusiasm!
Thank you so much!!!
I can’t wait to see your video comparing the Batis to the GM. Your output with the Batis is already amazing, would be nice to see how the GM fare.
Thank you so much! Excited to do that comparison soon!
Comparison coming soon!
I believe less is more for lenses especially buttons, as there’s less to go wrong or break. This lens seems future proof
It’s a beautiful lens with amazing features.
I love 85mm too!!
It’s the best!
Thanks for this… are you still using batis lenses 3 years after posting ?
Thank you! No, I’ve gone completely to the G Master lenses at this point.
Great review, I’m picking up a used one today for about the same price at the Sony 85mm FE.
Awesome! You’re gonna love it!!! And thank you so much!!!
@@MattJackson_RUclips I absolutely love the lens it's crazy how sharp it is!
I have 40 Zeiss, it’s nice but I’m looking to replace it with 24gm 1.4, and maybe 85 Zeiss next.
I have both of those lenses, and they're amazing!
videos are chill relaxing to watch and awesome review on this beast

4:38 wait. did they jack up the price? it's currently on amazon at $1199
It does seem to go up and down with the supply and demand.
From one MJ to another, I gots to have this Batis, lol.
Haha! For real, MJ. It’s a solid lens. I miss it, but the 24mm GM is doing pretty good stuff for me.
Did you review the 40 mm?, i have this 85 and planning to get the 40, thanks
Not yet, but I will. I also have the Planar 50mm that I love, and will review it early 2020!
Ty for the review! I been looking into this lens. Is there any reason why the 85mm sigma art involved or compared to?
Thanks for watching! So far I haven't used any lenses other than native Sony and Batis lenses, but I'll get on the Sigma comparisons soon!
@@MattJackson_RUclips Thank you!
Have you noticed better image quality with the Batis? The OSS is nice, but I'm not sure if it's worth selling my 85mm FE to pick up the batis.
The Batis is just a touch sharper, and the color/contrast is better out of camera and definitely better in post.
@@MattJackson_RUclips After watching a couple more comparisons I can't definitely see what you mean. The optical design is near identical so I'm wondering if it's just the Zeiss T* coatings that give it the extra punch. Sony just seems a touch more flat overall

Gotcha. Then yeah, I’d definitely grab the Batis for portraits.
@@MattJackson_RUclips thanks! and what do yu think about Batis 25 for video? in gimbal, what gimbal do you suggest me?
I love the Batis 25 and had it in my kit until I got the 24mm G Master. I have a video on them both individually as well as compared.
Which one do you recommend
The old sigma 85 1.4 or the Zeiss ?
I’ve not used the older Sigma, but I’ve heard good things. I think the Zeiss is stellar at f1.8.

At 5:00 "that extra bit of depth of field you can get", you do NOT get more depth of field with a 85mm 1.4 over a 85mm 1.8 Lens !
