I went with the Batis 25. The thing is a tank and is extremely well weather sealed (see lensrental's teardown), all while being super light. The OLED is criticized a lot but it makes astro so easy and fast to nail focus. It is just the perfect lens for hiking and camping. Oh and the image quality is top notch too.
I got 24 GM and I love this lens.. amazing for family pictures and everyday use. It is glued to my Sony for the past few months and my Batis 85 is patiently waiting..
I chose to keep the batis 25 f2. Reasons being a, the colour contrast and pop and b, it pairs well with my batis 40 f2 CF (which is the most versatile lens I own).
Thanks for the comparison. I have both lenses now as previously I only had the Batis. I was very curious to test both lenses out so I ordered the GM.... After a couple of tests with both photos and video I can say Batis is performing better for me, I love colours and contrast much better and also I find my Batis sharper compared to the GM. Video wise I would say they are extremely close but I find the Batis picking up the focus faster. GM has a plus with manual controls with AF-MF - aperture buttons and rarely better light control. Sending the GM back and keeping my beast Batis :) Test done with Sony A7III
Thank you for this comment! I've been torn between the batis (18mm 2.8) and Sony 24mm 2.8. 24mm seems more versatile but I get the feeling that Batis is also sharper (and I like the punchy colors too!)
The better contrast and color saturation comes from the better coating of the Zeiss lenses. Probably Zeiss did not go for 1.4 Aperature because this makes compromises in other departments like distortion, aberations, etc. Most likely the Sony lens has them, but they are corrected in camera software. My prefference is to have the better optical lense with contrast and colors and dump that extreme sharpnes and wide aperature. No one tells you the compromises behind that sharpness and aperature, you have to figure this out by yourself :) modern consumers do not go that far :D
The felt-lining in the lens hood exists to absorb and minimize stray light reflections from bouncing off of the hood and entering into the lens itself. It actually can make a pretty big difference in certain situations.
I am a still landscape photographer and I chose the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, I have read tons reviews and seen hours of video reviews, I am very happy with the Sony, but I wish that Sony and/or others will make lenses that can cope a lot better with high resolution sensors and have much better sharpness and better vignetting in the corners !
I think they are both great for different case uses especially if you’re able to have both. Zeiss being more of a travel friendly lens great for street/documentary photography and landscape work while the g master is better for studio work, portraiture as well as landscapes for those who do it professionally
Batis 25 and 85 all day for me. Love the form factor and as a gear head, the LCD on lens is awesome to have. I use it all the time on the 25 for night / astro
I have the 25mm batis I ended up picking it up second hand and it's very good i love the size and weight and the optics are superb great work thanks for sharing
Roy Phair the same here I live in UK and I also were looking for a 24mm prime in the market and I found my copy second hand £660 pounds second hand semi new almost unused on eBay I could not justify the GM price difference even though we know it’s better (but not that much) so both great lenses but the batis second hand it’s a better value for money, f1.4 vs f2 is not a big deal for me but pay double not doing video for example it is a real deal, I am really happy with my choice and the lens is so good that now I have the 85mm f1.8 batis ( £610 ) as well also on eBay almost new the funny thing is that the price of both lenses are still cheaper than the GM £1,416.45
Just jumped in the LOXIA rabbit hole with the 21 and 35mm lenses. Zeiss knew what they were doing, after years of lugging around monster weight fast glass it is a joy using their light weight strong performing lenses!
Hi. I Own the GMaster and i Love the Background Seperation a lot. In the Moment its my first Street and Reportage Standart Lens. Ive Buyed at 1300€....and i dont regret. Thanks a lot for this Video.
i know it's an older video but, at 6:25 the comment is "i enjoy the batis more." "seeing a little more of the store.." That very well can be. However, the GM can be set at F2.0 but the BATIS can not be set at 1.4. It would be logical to compare them both at the same f stop. Which you do later in the video. Good job.
I really don't get why you have only 411 subscribers, you are killing it! Great content, good style and very informative. I need to figure out which wide angle to get. I'm about upgrading the Sony FE 85 1.8 to the Zeiss Batis 1.8, I have a good deal and pay 'only' 250 EUR extra for it.
Thank you! I appreciate that! Between the two, I really love the picture quality and contrast of the Batis. That would definitely be my choice between the two.
This is a great and informative video. My first Zeiss lens was the Sony Zeiss 55/1.8. That lens blew me away and I fell in love with the "Zeiss look". Initially, I always thought the Sony 24/1.4 and 35/1.4 would be the ultimate lenses for me. However, they are still extremely expensive, even when buying used. I was able to pick up a used Batis 25 and Batis 40 for a little bit more than a new Sony 24/1.4. I know the Sony is a bit sharper, and it clearly won the bokeh test. But at the end of the day, I've fallen in love with that Zeiss look. And being able to get the 25 and 40 for roughly the same price as a single Sony lens was a no brainer for me. Even if I had the budget for both Sony lenses, I would have chosen Zeiss.
I have the Batis 25. I love the colors and how the images pop, but I wish the images were sharper. I’m torn about upgrading, because I find Sony lenses can look a little sterile, by comparison. But I’d love to have an f 1.4 lens and this might be the best lens for that. I’m mostly doing photography, but want to shoot more video.
Just saw this a year after you put it out there but I owned the Batis from when it first came out and then did move to the Sony GM. I loved my Batis lenses but have switched over to the GM/G family at 20, 24, 50, 85, and 135. i still own the Batis 40 though since the 50 GM is larges for walking around but the Batis 40 is perfect. Admit moving to all of the faster lenses is nice but may have just wasted a bunch of money to chase it. One thing I noticed in your direct comparison is that the Batis 25 actually looks to have a wider field of view than the GM 24 which was unexpected. Did you see this? Anyway, thanks for the review.
Hi Steven - thanks for stopping by - sure feels like a long time since I made this and had a Batis in my kit! I've gone fully GM except for the Zeiss Sony 50mm f1.4 and couldn't be happier. And yeah, the Batis 25 I believe has a slightly shallower flange distance and the lens is shorter itself, creating the illusion of a wider field of view when placed on the same camera on the same sticks in the same place. A little weird!
@@MattJackson_RUclips Matt, I did own the Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 and it’s a great lens. I moved to the 50/1.2 GM to get the ethos to match my 24, 35, 85, and 135. I really happy with it especially since the size and weight is the same as the ZA. Also shared your other posts with my son who is the videographer in the family. Take care.
500 subs? you deserve more man. the quality of your videos are way more better than those other channels with shitty qualities and contents. keep it up!
I just read through a comparison on fredmiranda with the Loxia 25mm f2.4. The Loxia looks amazing against the Batis. Granted is MF but I primarily shoot landscape. Have you had a chance to check that lens too?
I've watched the comparisons on fredmiranda between the gmaster and loxia over and over. If I were a landscape shooter almost exclusively, I'd have gone with the Loxia. The sunstars and overall sharpness / contrast / color at long focus distance are unmatched on the Loxia. The G master is the better all rounder and kind of favours environmental stuff like street, wide open shots etc. Super fast autofocus, too. To oversimplify/summarise: they're both perfect lenses for that they're designed for, and choosing between Gmaster and Loxia means choosing between f 1.4 / autofocus, and manual focus / superior (!!!) sunstars, respectively. I opted for the 24mm Gmaster since my shooting is quite allround.
if you had a choice. Would you go with the 135gm or the 24gm? I currently own the sony 85 1.8. I am looking to shoot home videos and professional video of my children for their IG. Also, looking to offer professional portraits such as headshots and senior pics.
I just found your video while seeking reviews of both of these lenses. The color and IQ with my other Zeiss lenses makes it hard to not buy the Batis...but its kind of hard to find a good reason to not buy the Sony 25GM. Best hat on the internet (Go Nuggest!).
An interesting thing I noticed after using the 24mm gmaster for half a year (and seen this in comparisons as well): The 24mm gmaster (don't know about the other lenses in the series) are designed to reduce contrast in out of focus areas. There are situations where this is preferable as it REALLY pops out the in-focus subject more than anything else (especially paired with its sharpness). However, you've demonstrated some images where in fact it is not preferable and a more contrasty out-of-focus area gives the better look. An important consideration when choosing either of these wonderful tools. Oh and the contrast difference on the gmaster between f/1.4 and f/2.4 is enormous.
Interesting! I have 24GM and I think to sell the GM and come back to Batis because of the contrast and 3dpop. Where do you get this contrast information?
Great video! Would love to see your opinion of the Sony 135 GM. I still cant decide wether getting the Sony or the Zeiss Batis 135. The size and weight of the Batis is so great, but I dont know if F2.8 is too slow for me...
That's all that's kept me from the Batis is the f2.8. I rarely shoot at anything past f2.0, and I definitely plan on a Batis vs GM 135 in the near future. Thanks SO much for watching@
@@MattJackson_RUclips I went with the 55 mainly on size but a bit on price too. Wanted something small when I didn't want to take the 85 1.4 samyang with me. The 24 and 55 for travel is just spot on.
@@BenLovell80 the 50mm f1.4 is a heavy lens but I think the picture you get out of it is worth the weight. I've used the 55 and it's beautiful. Perfectly light for gimbal work, too.
Hello again Matt....its been 4 months since I posted here and wanted to give an update. Based on reviews such as yours and many others I moved forward and bought the Sony 24mm GM over the Batis 25mm. I admit that my Milvus lenses have spoiled me and I expected similar IQ out of the Sony when compared to the former. Auto-focusing on the Sony has been kind of hit or miss and I do miss the heft of Zeiss glass. I think this one will be up for sale soon. Take care! Go Nuggets!!! :)
Hi! Happy to hear from you - nice work on the GM purchase. I really do love this lens. I use it on nearly every shoot. The Zeiss lenses are amazing as well, but for my purposes the GMs couldn’t be more appropriate. Go Nuggs!
so, i just picked up a camera last year and the only primes I have are the 55mm Zeiss 1.8 and these two, really silly to have two of the same focal length when I'm totally missing other lengths, but I found an as new copy of the GM for 800, w an Alphaguard skin and (kinda cheap) filter, and then saw the Batis online and haggled the seller down to 375, it's also in virtually as-new condition, so i just couldn't pass it up lol... the Batis line is so sexy... at 375 i kinda wanna keep it, i just dunno if i could justify it, could sell it on ebay and prob make $150 or so after fees... I dunno. great review, tho! thx
How did they compare on a lens testing chart. Seems to me this is the only way to test them against one another. Too many variables with moving photo shoots that change between shots.
Fantastic! Excellent video quality in the review. Nice review and comparison, we are debating between these two lenses, and leaning towards F1.4 GM. Also btw, the aperture ring will be quite useful for video smoothly transition from focussing just foreground to all of the scene. It's a cool feature.
That was great! Subscribed.. as far as the lenses go... If money is not an issue the Sony is definitely the lens I would go with as you can't beat the Sharpness and the Bokeh is amazing! not to mention the little bit of extra low light performance which to me is important. If you are a perfectionist the G Master is the way to go, however if money is tight the Batis is still a pretty remarkable lens. You can't go wrong with either... but I can see your dilemma Matt having them both... but the good thing about that is it makes it easier to know which lens to keep being able to compare the photos side by side. Too bad the Sony doesn't look a cool as the Zeiss...:)
Great Video mate! I'm currently saving to buy one of the lenses, but as I would like to do some Astro shots I think the Gmaster has the edge also in corner sharpness, so probably going for that one ;)
Thank you so much! And I agree. Haven't done astro with the G Master yet, but will the next time the skies are dark. I have a feeling it's going to be amazing.
I’ll be selling the Zeiss 16:35 f4. I have the Sony 24.105 f4 , the Zeiss batis 40mm 2.0 and the Sony 85mm 1.8. Also the 55mm Zeiss 1.8 damn! So many lenses ... but I’m getting the 24mm 1.4. GM I deserve that lens. lol. Thanks for the tips
If you want to impress your friends with spec sheets, buy gm master, if you want to impress them with photos, choose the Batis. Preferred the Bohka on the Batis and the contrast range. I used to hunger the low F numbers once, until I realised most of my shots were somewhere in the middle of the range anyway, rarely do you have a subject that looks better with a low depth of field. For new guys, save your money and avoid the F1.2, F1.4 etc, nothing wrong with going F2 lens or above with a decent modern camera. Boy, that GM lens to me looks ugly as sin next to the Batis, looks like forest gumps light saber.
@@MattJackson_RUclips Sorry to hear that, good news is, they are pretty damn cheap 2nd hand, to me there has always been something magical about Zeiss, but cant explain why.
The 3D pop on the Zeiss is just insane. I don't get why people aren't aware of this phenomenon. We should all be demanding the big manufacturers (but Sony at the very least) to take notes from Zeiss and prioritize this over clinical sharpness. But it won't happen because very few talk about this and so it's not the metric manufacturers optimize for anymore save for Zeiss, sigh.
My gut tells me that manufacturers would focus production on what majority of their market demands. And I think the market is already mostly satisified with clinical sharpness for most of their photography needs. 3d pop, afterall, would be more costly to research on to nail the Zeiss standard or higher. So introducting and even educating customers on 3d pop wouldn't make sense for this particular goal in marketing. And ultimately, 3d pop is just one of many ways we can produce better photgraphs for others or even for our own personal satisfaction. I just think clinical sharpness is more cost efficient. This is just my opinion and I've been wondering, just like you, about the awareness, or possible lack thereof, regarding 3d pop vs clinical sharpness.
Great review. Nice to have some humour thrown in with our lens obsession... May I ask- do you think there's validity in sticking with only say Batis lenses for uniformity of look and feel, or are you happily mix and matching GM and Zeiss... Seems like the best native Sony lenses at this time are mix and match- the older co-branded Sony/Zeiss (the 35 f1.4 and 50 1.4), then the newer GM 24 f.4 and 135 1.8 look amazing. The Batis series to me look like a solid choice (tough, reliable, weather-sealed) but get overlooked because they chose to go slower and lighter, and they're quite expensive for the aperture... I see a magic in Zeiss though, hard to pinpoint, but this game of images is subjective, and the smoothness to the out of focus areas that's very natural, less clinical...
Thanks so much! I absolutely think there’s something to be said for having a “set” of lenses. While I prefer the color and contrast of the Zeiss lenses straight out of camera, its the functionality of the GM lenses and older Sony Zeiss lenses that make them my choice lenses. Right now, I definitely mix and match, but I’m in the process of upgrading to all GM lenses. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment - great observations!
I dont get why peeps need MF on the lens when we have so many custom buttons these days, its not like they are hard to find even when looking thru the lens.
GM is almost double the price. For the extra Bokeh it's not worth it. The deep Bokeh looks stupid to me coz people can't tell where you were, especially when traveling.

You’ll be happy you did - it’s an amazing lens. Thanks for stopping by!!!
Have you got the 55? It's a perfect partner to the 24.
I have the Sony Zeiss Planar 50mm actually. It’s a killer lens. Probably the best of the E mount lenses when it comes to color and contrast.
I dunno.
great review, tho! thx
4:35 "no rubber gasket" on the G Master...c'mon please correct this :) sure there is...
Great video!
Thank you!!!
Do you think it is a good deal do get batis for 560-570$? I have some doubts but looks like a good deal?
It's a great deal on that lens, but I would be careful that it doesn't have any issues with the glass or mechanics at that price.
Just found your channel today. Great content. I’m gonna grab the 20mm 1.8 g in the next few weeks. Recently bought a7iii with the 55 zeiss.
Awesome! That’s a great lens and I’m excited to try out the 20mm. Thanks for stopping by!
Great comparison. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Very helpful video, thanks.
You got it! Thanks for watching!
How did they compare on a lens testing chart. Seems to me this is the only way to test them against one another. Too many variables with moving photo shoots that change between shots.
Really cool video Nine and awesome colors in the video Nine what do you think of the A6000 with the sigma 30mm F1.4? I subbed :D!
Thanks so much! I’ve actually not used any of Sony’s APSC cameras or the Sigmas...yet.
Great review, especially remarks about filming.
Thank you. And thanks for watching!
Fantastic! Excellent video quality in the review. Nice review and comparison, we are debating between these two lenses, and leaning towards F1.4 GM. Also btw, the aperture ring will be quite useful for video smoothly transition from focussing just foreground to all of the scene. It's a cool feature.
Thank you! Yeah, I'd say go with the GM all the way. And thanks for the tip - you're right about the aputure ring!
The GM doesn’t have a gasket seal?
It doesn't. It's weather sealed itself, but does not create a barrier between the lens and camera similar to the Batis.
Yes it does have a seal, it's black. Same as my 20mm, 24-105 and 100-400 GM.
I love your voice man, and great review too
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
@@MattJackson_RUclips Definetely Mate looking forwars to it if you make a video 🤙
@@johannm7794 Thank you!
for RIV - GM only
thanks dude excellent work
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this!
that 135 F1.8 GM is criminally sharp, like 90mm F2.8 G macro-level of sharpness BUT the 135 has way better bokeh
Nice! Can’t wait to try it out!
You use a wide for the depth not for high aperture close focus. Bokeh is unimportant to my mind for a wide lens.
the de click is for shooting video , so you can change aperture smoothly and silently wile shooting
Not sure why I didn't think about that...THANKS!
You definitely do! It's a game-changer lens!
clicks and clicks means video vs still. Sometimes you want to change aperture smoothly.
Totally! Thanks!!!
Very well done, thank you.
Thank you, John!
Very cool comparison! Thank you
Hope it was helpful!
Your voice is awesome!
Thank you!
Thanks for this. Very informative.
@@engjds every day I regret selling my Batis lenses
@@MattJackson_RUclips Sorry to hear that, good news is, they are pretty damn cheap 2nd hand, to me there has always been something magical about Zeiss, but cant explain why.
@@engjds may or may not be why I’m buying them back 👍🏼
This was great thank you!
Thank you!
would be nice to compare f/2.0 on both... lol
That’s an excellent point, and something I thought of after I hit publish 🤦🏼♂️
@@sleepyricky4826 Certainly true, I was more lamenting the situation rather than expecting any realistic change.
@@sleepyricky4826some people can’t see the pop. But once you do you can’t unsee it.
Good job

The Zeiss 3D pop tho...
No question
Hi's called a Short Trooper.
I dont get why peeps need MF on the lens when we have so many custom buttons these days, its not like they are hard to find even when looking thru the lens.
@@engjds at the time I was doing a lot of weddings. So having my hand on the lens and being able to switch easily was important to me.
Zeiss just render everything much better.
Every picture you took looks better on the Zeiss. Probably a coincidence.
GM is almost double the price. For the extra Bokeh it's not worth it. The deep Bokeh looks stupid to me coz people can't tell where you were, especially when traveling.
Cool
