Hard for me to be objective since I already own the 24 GM and like others it is, by far, my favourite lens and has spoiled me for lesser builds ( talking to you Sony 35f1.8!) but thank you Dustin for your beautifully crafted review, as always! Count me in as another subscriber waiting for your Sony 20mm f1.8 review!
Excellent review, thank you so much! Yours has become my favorite channel for in depth camera and lens reviews. Also, very beautiful scenery you capture in your test shots! 🇨🇦
Was lucky to pick this lens up early on as it was a hot seller and happen to be in stock at my local Camera shop. I didn't really expect to like a 24mm prime but once I tried it I just love the rendering it had. I bought it right then and there and it's one of my favorite lens to use for general photography. Love the rendering and image quality. It was a very unique look and really enjoy using it. Also a plus is the very light weight and compact size for a 24mm 1.4 prime lens. Great on my gimbal too!

I got this lens a month ago because all the reviews said it was the perfect lens for astro. So happy with its performance in almost all respects including astro. Maybe you got a bad copy? Fantastic information and review as always. Keep up the awesome work Dustin. You're hardwork and honesty is credit to the community. Respect.
@@ncampion Agreed. I spit my juice out when he recommended the Sigma 14-24 over the 24mm for astro. That being said, I'd love a copy of the 14-24 as well.
@@ncampion Probably there is a less than desirable amount of copy to copy variation. The copy I got seemed so off sharpness, aside from focus pulsing above f7, I returned it. There is also a thread where someone is getting stars shaped like + signs from the 24 GM.
I’ve had this lens for around 6 months and hardly taken it off one of my two A9s. I wasn’t looking at this review to justify my purchase, but having watched the review, I wonder if I’d have bought it based on this review. I think it’s a fantastic lens and well worth the high price tag.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hello Dustin, perhaps not undersold it's performance, it was a good and balanced review, but it didn't leave me feeling I must buy one of these to complete my lens line-up. Phrases like "did farily well" for example don't make you want to buy what is quite an expensive lens.
Dustin Abbott I said it was a “good and balanced review”. There was nothing wrong with it, and I always value your opinions. My point was that having heard your review, perhaps I would not buy the lens. My own personal experience would lead me to recommend the lens to anyone looking for a lens of this focal length. It is sharp, good quality build, full of features. Apologies for commenting as it seems to have caused confusion I had not intended.
This would definitely be in my collection if it had been made available when I bought my Batis 25/2. The Batis is a fantastic lens in every sense, even in the looks department, but having the flexibility of an f/1.4 is always a good thing, especially considering that fact that it's only 100g or so heavier (Sony 445g VS Batis 335g).
Hi Dustin, Once again, a comprehensive review. Thank you! How would you rate this Sony 24mm F1.4 GM lens to the Batis 25mm F2 lens. Would you recommend the Batis lens over this Sony lens if the primary use of the lens is architecture and landscape, and no portrait or astro photography. Looking forward to your thoughts on this. Regards, Deb
Dustin, like many, I should admit I do prefer the test chart better. I hope, my suggestion doesn't annoy you, but, much I have to stress that yours are among the most professional (and your delivery - among the most mature and no-nonsense) of all photography gear reviews on RUclips, I think, zooming into the various focus chart areas (as Christopher Frost does in his reviews) would help determine the centre, off-centre and edge performance of a given lens / lens-camera combination better than a global view alone. The usefulness of zooming onto various segments of a test chart would be particularly evident when watching your reviews on smartphones (as, I am certain, everyone does often, as I do). I'm also thinking, another, larger test chart for far focus would be more useful than landscape capture samples. Best regards.
I'm not sure what exactly he does, as I am zooming into a pixel level with the screen capture. He might be doing it will a still photo, which I could try.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I must admit, [because I'm much more into the focal lengths past 35mm, especially the human and wildlife portrait range,] I hastily skimmed through the video rather than watch it properly as I usually do, and it is likely that I missed you zoom into the chart. If so, my apologies.
Please give me some of your thoughts - I want a small wide angle prime for hiking, traveling and occasional astro (only stills). Currently I have an option of a 24mm GM priced similarly to a new 20mm 1.8. Which one would you recommend? I do have sigmas 35 but it's just too big for the mountains
Hi Dustin...Could you advise me how this fares with Loxia 25 optically, other than differences in aperture, manual/auto-focus, etc. I might have missed this in your review.
The GM lens competes very strongly. It obviously has a major aperture advantage and has a sharpness advantage at wide apertures. The Loxia advantage is that I do think the colors are still superior.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you Dustin. I loved the 24 when I rented it and it really makes portraits shine but I still find it big to carry around. Loxia feels manageable. I wish 24 was manual lens making it much smaller... Manual focussing is not difficult at all with mirror less.
I would be open to the idea other than the fact that 24mm isn't a focal length I reach for often....nor one that I'm desperate to have a wide aperture on. I would be much more likely to reach for a 35mm lens for portraits, for example. This would be my top 24mm pick, but I'm not one of the people who love the focal length.
Hi Dustin. Very nicely done lens review! I am a Fujiflm X-System landscape and product photographer, and have found the Fujinon XF16-55 f/2.8 Zoom to be quite sharp at f/8, and delivers images with enough sharpness and edge-to-edge detail that holds up in a 24" x 36" poster print. With respect to bokeh, I require sharp detail throughout my product images, so I never shoot wide open, preferring the optimum apertures of f/8-11. And, with the Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro, the sharpest lens I've ever used, if I need to use focus stacking to ensure maximum sharpness and detail, I am obtaining detail that would rival FF and possibly even medium format, IMHO. That said, do you think that I would see an improvement in sharpness/detail retention in a 24"x36" poster print from the Sony a7 System over my Fuji X-System? Thanks again, sir.
I can't really answer that, as I'm not often printing that size. I don't think you are getting detail that rivals Medium Format, however, as that would defy physics. I do prefer FF or MF over APS-C for rendering fine details (and nuance in light and color gradations), but I also think that modern APS-C cameras can deliver amazing results.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Dustin, thanks for the reply! Regarding my statement about detail rivaling MF, I was only speaking subjectively, and refering only to my small product images that I use focus-stacking on, in which I manually focus on anywhere from 10 to 40 separate points on the subject, and combine those images in Affinity Pro and Photoshop. This results in a file somewhere around 240MB, which is why I made that statement. I do realize that the larger the format, the better overall image quality, but I was just waondering how much more sharpness/detail I'd get in general, by moving from the sxcellent Fuji APS-C System to a FF System like the Sony a7Riii and some good Sony/Zeiss optics. In fact, I've love to see a comparison between the Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro and the Sony 90mm f/2.8 GM Macro, in terms of sheer image sharpness! Thanks again!
Have a Batis 25... so.. not inclined to change it. Could you do a a135GM lens review? Been eyeing that for awhile. cant go wrong with that but.. Just curious what you think about it.
Thanks for all, it’s a great video I have a question please what’s the better lens : the Sony 24mm 1.4 or the Zeiss Batis 25mm f2 ? 🙏 I saw the video of the Zeiss can you help to decide 🙏
Dustin, I think you have done a fantastic job showcasing the low light capabilities of the new Sony 24mm F.14 GM. I liked the video and subscribed to your channel. Do you think the low light capabilities of the 24mm F.14 GM outweigh the 16-35mm F2.8 GM for outdoor low light video conditions drastically? I do a lot of low light virtual walk tours with the 16-35mm F2.8 GM right now (Using A7iii body + Zhiyun Crane 2 Stabilizer). I usually set the focal length to around 17mm or 18mm to compensate for the Sony 4K video crop and Adobe Premiere software stabilization crop while still providing a true virtual wide angle experience. Despite being absolutely blown away by the 24mm F1.4, I am concerned it is simply not wide enough for my style of videos. I definitely welcome your opinion if you know any better alternative. Anyway I would greatly appreciate if you could check out my recent videos and provide HONEST feedback. Subscribe if you enjoy :)
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Before I made this comment, I didn't realize Sony had a 20mm F1.8 available. The thing that really made look into other options over the 16-35mm F2.8 is that when I walked through forest, the video seemed too dark still.
Does anybody know why the skin tones get saturated, reddish when I record a video in Manual or video mode using a7iii? The second I press rec button I get this vibrant look. I use a standard profile. I looks good before I press rec. Also, I noticed that awb looks better than when I use a grey card. 🤷♂️
Be nice if you would do a decentered test before every review. Just to ensure that you got a good copy. Nonetheless great review as always Dustin. I'm looking forward to that 135mm GM review. Would it be to much to ask for some reviews on your vintage lens collecton?
I can easily check centering with my test chart (and I do). I'm actually going to work in some older reviews periodically, including some of the Canon lenses that have been in my kit for years and that I've never reviewed or never reviewed to my current standards.
@@DustinAbbottTWI That's great news! I'd also be interested in seeing you review some of the Super Takumar lenses. If you could aquire for reviewing some of the vintage Leica, Carl Zeiss, Pentax, Yashica, Helios, Jupiters, Industars, and a MIR-1B. That would be great! You are one of the best lens reviewers on RUclips. You really need a vintage lens review playlist. Please make it happen.🙏 There is more vintage lens shooters than you think and you may inspire others to try something new.
Hi Prince, I have done a few of those reviews (you can search on my channel for some SMC Tak reviews). The biggest reason why there are few such reviews on RUclips is that there are few monetary streams for those kinds of reviews, which means that those of us who do such reviews would be doing a lot of work for essentially free.
My copy has a bit of coma, but I think that test copy has significantly more. In the end though it isn’t hurting my experience, nor am I unhappy with what I print and post.
That's possible, but unlikely. It's more likely that I test to expose potential flaws while people who have purchased something look at it differently.
Hi Dustin Abbott, my name is Julien iam form the Netherlands. Could you do a comparison review between this Sony lens and the Milvus 135mm for botanical purpose with a magnification of 1:2. That can be achieved with extention tubes. Yours Faithfully, Julien
Dustin, great review. Thanks for your honesty. I bought the lens also for Astro as advertised by some Sony „Artesian“. I can confirm that there is significant coma present in the edge of the frame. I am eliminating them by creating panorama shots using Lightroom. This process (I don’t know why) eliminates all coma at 1.4 in all part of the frame including the edges. However, I would never sell it, because that is a small problem compared to the great Autofokus, sharpness and bokeh rending.
That's great feedback. I can only report on what I actually see, and what I saw didn't agree with some of the reporting that I read after my own conclusions (I prefer to draw my own conclusions first). I completely agree that the overall package is a serious winner.
Only just a bit wider than my Sigma 16mm EF-M that's good should be a better weight ballance too as my new Sony A7R IVA is a lot heavier than my Canon M50.
I just said goodbye to mirrors as well. Got myself a Nikon z6 (which allows me to adapt the entire Sony lineup, hehe), my F-mount lot is going to be sold off.
Tbh I woulnd't recomend the Sigma 14-24 over this Sony for Astrophoto, the 2 stop advantage definitely is waaay more noticeable than the little bit of coma advantage of the 14-24, also if you are shooting stuff like meteors the extra 2 stops are just invaluable
So, the lens is not the best option for astrophotography? How interesting, since Sony has stated that this is particularly designed to serve the purpose of astrophotography, especially in comparison to Sigma lenses. I found this observation in your video particularly interesting!
@Foto4Max Nobody says it is bad. But check this review. Fringing and terrible coma. Personally, I expected better from a top of the line(GM ) first-party native branded lens.
It's been several years since I've done the Batis review, so it wasn't really on my radar. It's also got a full stop slower maximum aperture and isn't quite the same focal length.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Can you please compare this lens to the Batis 25mm in you shortened review if on hand? The Batis auto focus appears better on other reviews. One millimetre of difference is close enough. Keep up the amazing work. I like watching your videos even though I'm not, or wasn't, a lens enthusiast.
Yes and no. The Sigma 16mm is very good, though there are areas where it isn't competitive with the GM...and APS-C is not full frame...for a variety of applications.
Hi Dustin! I do agree with you on the star part of the video. I saw reviews that hyped up the performance at F1.4, so to be honest I thought that I had a faulty lens when I tested mine for the first time. Glad you where honest about it's performance, shame some reviews are misleading. What caught my ear though is that you claim that the Sigma 14-24 is better for astro? Will you be able to review it for us? And if someone reads this, its a great lens for astro in my opinion, but the claims made for it at F1.4 are misleading at best. Stop it down a bit and the results are stunning.
Dustin, I think I'll be in the minority here, but please consider going back to your grey wall for resolution testing. The test chart you made up for this review was very poor - and underexposed on the video. I can't see what you're describing verbally where I could before. Really, this feels like a dealbreaker. Also, what's with the sponsorship? Can you address this? I've been looking to your reviews (and pointing others to your website and RUclips site) for quite awhile now but I'm sorry, if this is just a commercial endeavour for you I'm no longer interested. But SERIOUSLY that chart with the money stuck onto it failed completely in this review. Honest.
Stephen, interesting feedback, as I've had very positive feedback on the test chart. Far more votes to continue with this approach than with the wall test. I can understand your personal frustration, but I try to take the consensus of my audience feedback along with my personal observation. I'm able to standardize my testing better with the chart (repeatable lighting and conditions) and thus do more comparison to other lenses. As for the sponsorship; I do a sponsored post on a rare occasion, but yes, I am definitely trying to earn a living from this. And with all due respect, you get the benefit of all my work at no personal cost, as do hundreds of thousands of other people. Condemning me for trying to provide for my family and better my future through my honest work seems a little, well...small.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks Dustin. No need to get personal. I wasn't. Honestly, your comments to me were outside the bounds of my own to you, calling me small. I don't take to name calling well and will be unsubscribing. Thank you for all your previous excellent content and efforts.
Stephen, you are completely within your rights to subscribe or unsubscribe, but if you think your remarks were not personal, I think you may need to review them. "...if this is just a commercial endeavour for you I'm no longer interested." "...it failed completely." "this feels like a dealbreaker." "...what's with the sponsorship." "...test chart YOU made up...was very poor". These are personal statements, and that is how I received them.

You're welcome, though my conclusions do differ from those of some other reviewers.
Will you compare with 20mm F1.8? :)
To some degree, yes. I've started standardizing my results more so it allows me to do that even if I don't have both lenses on hand.
Does anybody know why the skin tones get saturated, reddish when I record a video in Manual or video mode using a7iii? The second I press rec button I get this vibrant look. I use a standard profile. I looks good before I press rec. Also, I noticed that awb looks better than when I use a grey card. 🤷♂️
You probably have one setting for stills and (without realizing it) have another profile enabled for video.
135 gm is amazing too
Yes - I've got it scheduled to arrive at the end of the month.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Fair enough. I'm pretty new to this all so my thoughts aren't too well formed.
Hi Dustin Abbott, my name is Julien iam form the Netherlands. Could you do a comparison review between this Sony lens and the Milvus 135mm for botanical purpose with a magnification of 1:2. That can be achieved with extention tubes.
Yours Faithfully,
Julien
Hi Julien, I'm afraid that I can't. I've already had to send the 135GM back to Sony (sniff); it was a loaner.
Fair enough.
I just said goodbye to mirrors as well. Got myself a Nikon z6 (which allows me to adapt the entire Sony lineup, hehe), my F-mount lot is going to be sold off.
That's interesting.
@Macro Cosmos Microscopy I’ve been considering the same thing .
Are Sony lenses perform to their fullest on Nikon?
Thumbnail seems to be incorrect, it states 1.8 instead of 1.4.
Good catch. I've fixed it now.
Perhaps, though my observations are made based on coma performance.
YEAH!
Thank you.
So, the lens is not the best option for astrophotography? How interesting, since Sony has stated that this is particularly designed to serve the purpose of astrophotography, especially in comparison to Sigma lenses. I found this observation in your video particularly interesting!
The lensmakers always suggest that their lens is the best at everything, but that doesn't automatically make it so.
Great review.
Glad you enjoyed it
thank u for this!
You're welcome.
Great review!
Hopefully, Sony 20mm F 1.8 will have better performance in astrophotography.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll certainly test for it when I have it on hand.
I'd be interested in this. Currently using the 24gm and 18mm batis.
@Foto4Max Nobody says it is bad. But check this review. Fringing and terrible coma. Personally, I expected better from a top of the line(GM ) first-party native branded lens.
THX dUSTIN
You're welcome.
The high-pitched sound is actually really annoying lol; I've pretty much stopped using this lens indoors because of that sound.
That's a shame.
wow
It's a sweet lens.
Surprised that there is no mention of the Batis 25....
I'm afraid I don't have the Batis. Most lenses that I test are loaners, and I only have them for 2-4 weeks.
I honestly get very similar or even better results when I use my Sigma 16mm 1.4 on the a6500 sharp throughout the frame!!👌🏼
Yes and no. The Sigma 16mm is very good, though there are areas where it isn't competitive with the GM...and APS-C is not full frame...for a variety of applications.
@@DustinAbbottTWI ... Yes I understand! I do shoot FULL-FRAME and like the look better!!
@@DustinAbbottTWI I recently purchased the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 loving it on my a7ii 👌🏼
It's a very strong value for money lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI For enthusiast on a budget like myself, it's an awesome deal!!
I did review the Sigma 14-24 already. Check out my channel.
@@DustinAbbottTWI The DG DN model? I didn't see it. I'll have to look for it one more time. Thanks!
That's correct. Here's the DN playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLwWFV2kake9Fx48TI2JoTNh5eYJs1Q5Z5
A little bit.
...of...what?
Your shirt is crunk towning in the video. Get up on the smootherino towns.
Wow, I really don't understand this comment at all.
@@DustinAbbottTWI It is a 12 shotter vodka redbull comment haha. Your shirt is flickering in video . U would think electronics in 2023 can prevent that.
