    I picked up the Zeiss 25 f2 used for $850 from ebay, 10/10 condition with box and everything. The 24 1.4 GM makes me drool, but for $500 less I'll take 1 stop slower aperture. (Also I own the Batis 18mm and 85mm so I enjoy having a a more consistent lens lineup.) But if I had to pick between the Zeiss and the Sony brand new, the Sony would be a no-brainer. I'm impressed with the faster glass Sony has been making for FE. The 24 GM is a surprisingly small lens given the tad oversized problem Sony lenses tend to have. I'd like to see a similarly sized 35 1.4 GM someday.

    Batis has better colors + better rendering 04:22 . Also the GM 24 gets CA just as bad @ 09:47 ( Magenta CA on espresso machine, Green CA on the rear window ).
    Definitely closer than it seems!

      Sigma looks too big. Why buy something so big in a wide angle. You are more likely to use smaller apertures then to open up a wide angle

    Hey Jason!! I just want to thank you for everything you've done so far. You've converted me from a Panasonic G85 to an A7iii!!! I've been watching all your videos about the a7iii so far and it's been really helpful for filming videos and pics for my tech channel. Hopefully I will be able to meet you one day (be alpha in Vancouver BC 2/20?) to thank you in person. I really appreciate the advice you gave to me a few months back and hopefully reaching the 10K mark in December this year! and btw...the sony 24mm f1.4 gonz be my next purchase because of this vid haha!!

    So, to sum up, the GM produces smoother background blur and cleaner bokeh balls, while the Batis has a better focus tracing and being a tad bit lighter (although the CA is more visible). Looks like I'm keeping my Batis 25. I think the color it renders are more pleasing to my taste. Thank you, Jason, for answering this question!
    On a side note, the Batis is selling at around US$970 here in Hong Kong :)

    For the APSC format, your best choice is the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN. Outstanding lens in every way that can be used with Clear Image Zoom, giving you a 16mm to 32mm option even while shooting video. A great super sharp E mount at a reasonable price! It will match any lens posted in this video. I'll be posting some samples on my channel shortly.

    I can barely see the difference in the background blur between the Ziess and the Sony. I guess if I'm going to get the Sony would be the fact its better at low light and the handling (I love aperture rings)

    I found my Batis 25 used for 800 right before the announcement of the GM. After seeing them side by side I feel pretty happy keeping it like you mentioned for current owners. If I was comparing the two new I would probably pick the 1.4, but I think my GAS is actually okay on this one lol!

  • @chengong388
    @chengong388 6 лет назад

    I already have the Sony Zeiss 24/1.8 on my a6500, but I really want to get the new GM lens because of the depth chroma aberrations. You can also see them on the Batis lens, notice how the bokeh balls have a bright outline that is also coloured green/blue depending on the WB. Where as the GM lens just has those perfect transparent spheres with clean edges. It's not a big problem with some shots when the entire background is blurred but whenever you have transitions into/out of focus, you can get a massive amounts of coloured edges that are impossible to remove in LR.

    18mm, 25mm, 40mm, 85mm and 135mm Batis lenses are all 67mm filter thread because Zeiss is trying to keep their whole line up of Batis lenses uniform. They are targeting hybrid and travel shooters and the less gear you have to carry the better.

      I would still go for 18mm. Rather have something a little wider if I'm going wide

    Hey Jason, a quick question. The price of Zeiss batis dropped down to 985 recently. Would you still recommend g master?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hey Jason, I own Sony a7iii, I'm looking for a prime lens which will work for landscape, astro and portraits. I don't wanna own many lenses, would be easier to travel with one/two lenses. Which one could you recommend?

    I watch all of your videos. You and professor Hines. Funny thing is I am a Canon user not Sony lol. I still enjoy watching you do your thing. Maybe I will go to Sony later on? Ah idk. Keep up the great work Jason. Thanks for entertaining us

    how good will be the Sony 24-1.4 for recording a video clip on day light?

  • @Akaisensoo

    I don't know why but, I have a Sony APS-C 35mm 1.8 / A7s, and at 12600 ISO I have a lot of noise, do you know why ?
    Changed from s-log 2 to cine 1 but I don't know why I have a lot of noise in low light..
    Maybe because I'm making videos in 1080p 60fps ?

      I'm not too sure. I have not owned the a7S. Are you experiencing this issue with FF lenses as well? Are you exposing to the right by atleast 2 stops?

    • @Akaisensoo
      @Akaisensoo 6 лет назад

      Jason Vong No i didn't test with a Full Frame lens and no I didn't try too about exposing like this, I will try all of this because I'm hesitating about having a FF Lens, Black Friday is coming but I want a 1.8 or 1.4 between 16 or 24 mm and I don't know exactly the lens I can take, I want to have a " sharp lens " at least.
      If you want to have a idea, I'm a " night man " I love to take photos and videos at night, especially bats.

    Hey, Jason thanks for giving such great info on these lenses. I have a dilemma, I can get a brand new 25mm Batis for $850 or a brand new Sony 24mm for $1140, but its back-ordered. Which do you suggest if my primary use is for Vlogging and a wide for video?

  • @trinedy
    @trinedy 6 лет назад

    I'm noticing from your side-by-sides, the Zeiss lens seems to have a little warmer tone, most notably with skin tones. Was your footage shot with any differing profiles that would cause this, or would you say that the lenses typically render color this way? BTW, thank you for these videos, they're really well done and helpful!

    Great video. I do appreciate your channel. Regarding these two lenses here in the UK the Sony GM is approx twice the price of the Batis and frankly I consider the Batis to be an incredible lens. Chacun à son goût!

    You failed to mention a few things - flare resistance and the digital readout window on the Batis. Nice review otherwise. Are they both weather sealed?

    Thats a tough one.. I love the Zeiss colors, but for a $100 more I'll take better bokeh, low light, and Sony Pro Support will service the GM I'd have to say..

      I have a theory that they’ll keep the 135 GM light also. I believe they’ll stick it in the 100 STF GM’s body and use some XA glass again with that super silent and fast motor.. it’ll be wicked. The separation and compression of that 135 at 1.8 will be disgustingly breathtaking

    • @paouvous
      @paouvous 6 лет назад

      Had no idea the lens could affect colours so much! Also the autofocus on the Zeiss is perfect. In video the Sony lens is slow at times. Could this be a firmware update? Because it does not seem to be the motor speed in the lenses the difference.

    • @johnsoncityaerialphotograp7201
      @johnsoncityaerialphotograp7201 6 лет назад

      paouvous I love my Zeiss glass that I do use. The motor in that 24 GM is supposed to be really fast but it would depend what you’re shooting it at F stop wise. The 85 1.4 GM is a little slow to focus and that’s because if you’re shooting something at 1.4 it takes a split second to move all that glass and acquire focus on such a short depth of field. I believe the 24 GM has the better newer motors similar to the 400 2.8 for speed. You definitely can’t go wrong with either lens for sure. Just a matter of what you’re looking for.

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  6 лет назад +1

      I usually shoot 3:2 but if it's RAW, it will be 3:2 anyway regardless if you changed it in camera because that only affects JPEG

    Robin Here 🙋‍♂️ I can see a big difference between both lenses … only the 1 millimeter focal length. I think for that price … zeiss did a really good job. What do you think about the background blurryness ? Is it positive to shot portraits with the Batis 25mm ? Greetings Robin from Germany 🇩🇪

    In the UK the price difference between the two lenses is approximately 400 pound so the choice is more difficult the batis is around 979 pound and the 24 mm g master is 1400 pound I managed to get a mint batis for 700 pound and am very pleased with the images I get from it in my opinion fast lenses are over rated 99 percent of lenses have there sweet spot between f4 to f8 and all said and done it's all about image quality
