I had the privilege to get the new Batis early and test it a bunch (they even used some of my shots on the product page and launch prasentation) and I have to say that lens is impressive! It has the potential to be the new favourite lens of everyone owning a Sony alpha camera. It's really versatile with that close focus capabilities (for photo and video) and the rest is really what you know from other Batis lenses: Super crisp (even at F2) and beautiful bokeh. Big recommendation to everyone reading this!
I got my 24mm GM about a week ago and I am SO pleased with it. I sold my Batis 25 in order to buy it and I’m happy that I did. An extra stop of light is never a bad thing.
Hey Jason, I currently have A7R Mark 3 along with Zeiss Batis 85 f1.8 and Sony 24mm G Master. Should I get the Zeiss 40mm F2 as a mid lens or go with the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 or 55mm 1.8 lens?
40/2 not much different in standard focal length with a f2.8 zoom. But f1.4 is big different with f2.8 which in wide angle. So I definitely choose 24Gm.
Dude as a recent switch from Nikon two Sony a73 I love your videos, very informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work and I wish I could go to that event in LA because it sounds siiiick!!!
I have both lenses. The 40 2 Batis is my go to travel lens. So easy to take pleasing photographs with the 40 2, and it is such a light weather proof lens. Travelling, or just taking your camera along, the 40 2 is the one. But then there is the Loxia gems to play with, so much fun.
I'm about to invest in a A7 iii, and the 24mm 1.4 G Master will be the first lens I'll be picking up. I need a wide for street, adventure, and making videos. The reviews I've read and watched has truly sold me on that lens. Can't wait to see a comparison between the 24mm and the Betis 25mm.
The Batis 40 has a similar DOF due to the longer focal length and is much lighter. Both lenses are easy to take pleasing photos. The 40/2 is the first lens I reach for when travelling.
I have the 24-70 GM so for me having the Batis 40mm with the close focusing capability would be a great addition. Especially for detailed shots I would like to get with my videos.
What about the tamron 28-75 f2.8? It has even more magnification 1:2.9 compared to 1:3.3 of the 40mm f2. You could sell you gm, and bought the tamron and the Sony 24 f1.4 and Ou would still spend less than Just buying the 40mm batis.
Personally 24 1.4 GM would be the most ideal lens for all purposes. Wide enough for landscape, fast enough for astro, great OOF rendering, light enough to travel, small enough to fit in your pocket, close focusing distance for unique close perspective shot... and lastly on video just hit one button for super 35 and you'll have 35mm 1.4 too.
Swhiskey Not exactly. It stays an 1.4 lens with 1.4 speed regardless of what sensor is behind it. You get the bokeh of a 2.1 lens when composing the same frame on crop mode. But it doesn’t become slower like a f/2.1 lens. According to the northrups ;)
@@FrankyFeedler Not really at super 35 , the total amount of light decreases due to less sensor surface being used and also lower resolution. (according to me :)
@@marcelocampoamor4761 True, but the speed (shutter speed) remains the same. Smaller sensor camera's ISO is tweaked to get the same SS from an f/1.4 lens regardless of which sensor size you put it in front of. In other words: you get more noise at the same speed. Lens remains f/1.4. It's a physical lens characteristic independent of sensor size, just like the focal length. Resolution is not relevant in real world terms: phone sensors have 45+ megapixels while an A7SIII has 12 megapixels. Dynamic range is partly a function of sensor pixel size so more pixels = less dynamic range, all else being equal.
Jason, i have the 35 1.4 Zeiss. What do you think about the Batis 40mm vs the Sony/Zeiss 35mm 1.4? I shoot fashion and dont really use the 1.4 aperature. I also have the 25mm Batis which I use in Suoer 35 mode, so the 35 1.4 stays in the bag. I only use it when I need the megapixels in 35mm focal legnth. So, im thinking about swapping the 40mm in for the 35 1 4. Thoughts?
Hi Jason. I read a lot about Eye AF not working properly on the Batis 40mm and also slow video AF. Care to share your experience so far?! I'm really looking at buying it.
Thanks Jason Now I'm in a tossup with what lens to get next 16-35mm f4 for the versatility 24mm f1.4 GM because it's a GM or the 40mm f2 Batis for that close focusing for details 😭
Any updated thoughts on the 40mm? I keeping reading that due to its "macro" capabilities, it also has the closing aperture effect up-close like other macro lens (f4 at its minimum focusing distance). Was this a none issue for you?
How do you like the 40mm after a year? I have the 55mm but I wanted to get a more close focusing lens for food photography. I have the 90mm macro but its way too much of a zoom for most food photos.. Thoughts?
hello jason, and if you have to choose between 35 1.4 (sony or sigma) or 50 1.4 and batis 40? to use in combo with 85 1.8? Which one would you keep? and why? You think batis 40 has the same IQ as sigma 35 or 50? I have a sigma 50 art for sony emount and i love it but (not working with photo) i'lm searching something lighter and special under 50 mm
If let me choose from the batis 40 and sony 24gm, I will definitely buy the 24, I just dont understand whats the difference between 40mm and step forward a bit of 35mm looking. But 24 1.4 , the 1.4 ap is huge difference than 2.8 man.
Pre-ordered the 24GM instead of B40. Main reason? Crop mode on A7R3 is sooo useful. 24GM will double as 24/35, which is better suited for my use (travel) than B40 with its 40/60 focal length. I will add a 55/1.8 for a compact yet fast two-prime travel set, covering 24-80mm.
Hi Jason, why did you regret selling the 35mm 1.4? I'm in a similar situation, trying to sell my Sigma 35 1.4 and get the 40 f2. Any point of keeping the 35mm 1.4?
What are your thoughts on trading in the Zeiss 55 1.8 for the Batis 40? I have the Batis 25mm and Zeiss 55 ... and while I do have the new Tamron zoom the Batis 40 just seems like a compelling “do it all” lens. Appreciate your thoughts
@@JasonVong Yes, that's a good idea. I think the Sony FE 35mm f1.4 even stopped down to f2.0 won't be as sharp as the Batis 40 at f2.0. Sony and Zeiss optics seem to have improved quite a bit since lenses like the FE 35 1.4 were introduced.
If you want close focusing, you can get any of the Voigtlander F0.95 MFT lenses and put a MFT to E-Mount adapter and get some amazing close focusing distance (14.99cm to 23cm)!
Jason...no brainer - Batis 40mm all day! Mine is on pre order. 16-35 GM covers the 24mm and ISO covers the low light. 40mm is closest to cinematic and most close to a full frame sensor. It will basically be the lens that is always on one of your camera bodies and eliminates the debate of what lens to travel with. It could replace the 35 & 50mm eventually and the CF is dope as....! If anything, for weddings... I’d rather be eyeing up the Sigma 105mm 1.4 over the 24 GM.
...and, the Batis line up just looks so sleek and sexy on the Sony A7s. Much less utilitarian in style and less clinical in rendering... it’s all about the pixie dust!
Hi Jason how is the auto focus on the Batis 40mm both stills and video? I have this on preorder and plan to use it for my main video lens but that’s only if the auto focus is fast and smooth. Comments?
Check out that Sigma 40 1.4 that just got dropped as well J. It doesn't have the short focusing distance (@1.31ft), but does have some good low light. And the usual Sigma heavy weight.
Are there 2 prime lenses for Sony that are almost identical in size and weight? Cuz I want to use them on a gimbal without ajusting my balance (its oké if the balance is off a little bit).
You're better off with a Zoom lens and a Crane 2 or Ronin S. Balance the lens in the middle so when you zoom out or in, the balance will not shift much
Thanks for these video. What can you advice as a first lens for A7R_3? 24 1.4 GM or 35 1.4 Zeiss? If the next lens i want is 55 1.8. Thanks in advance for your answer!
@@JasonVong Thanks. What is your thoughts about searching for a good copy 35 1.4? Did you select your 35 zeisess from several copies or take the first and there was no troubles with its sharpness?
depends! Sometimes prime lenses are great for general walkaround situations or giving you a more unique look at the faster aperture. If you like shooting wide at 24mm a lot with the 2470, the GM might be worth your wild
I have the Zeiss 16-35 f/4 , 85 f/1.8 and the kit lens. I need a wide portrait lens for photography. So I am thinking between the 24 f/1.4 or a future 35 mm f/1.8. In the meanwhile I will get as much as possible from the kit lens.
Hey Jason I was thinking about getting the 24mm 1.4GM as a walk around lens but more than that it seems like a perfect gimbal lens what do you think there? Currently have the 28-135 f4, 35mm 2.8, and 85mm 1.4GM.
Hi Bryan i just bought the 24mm last friday and all i can say even in handheld its a beast! and this week i will be using it on my gimbal and i think its a awesome combo, btw you can watch my new test video for this lens on my channel it was all shot in 1.4 and handheld.
I don't really need a close focusing lens so the 24mm 1.4 sounds more appealing. I like the de-click switch for the aperture. This was a great video. You made good arguments for both lenses.
Jason Vong hi again Jason, if I may ask, since I currently have Sony 85 1.8, and I’m considering between these two lenses, what do you think which one should I get for walk around and everyday use? (I love taking portrait, coffee shop, food, drink, and landscape sometimes) Thank you
@@morimetz Yeah, I never understood this either. Using super35 mode, you'll just get a lower res image. So there's no advantage. You're cutting out stuff from your image for no reason and as you said. You could just have done that in post.
If it would be an f1.4 maybe, but honestly at f2 I find the Zeiss Batis 40mm f2 a bit boring. I don't need the closeup capability, but I do need shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh.
Great points friend. Close focusing is certainly a factor for me as well and the reason I picked the Tamron 28-75. However the sample shots online of the 40mm are fantastic. If I did not own the Tamron I would have considered the 40 instead. Perhaps I can sell my 55mm and get the 40mm instead. Heh. With that said, the next lens on my line up will be most likely the 24mm 1.4. :)
Thanks for the video. As someone who does not plan to do product shoot in foreseeable future, I'm NOT sold at all on this Batis. Wide angle GM would be amazing addition.
I'm having a hard time choosing between the Batis 40/2 and Sony 50/1.4. The Batis for me makes more sense, but I know I'm gonna be drooling over the 1.4 shots for some portraits. I have the Sony 35 1.4, Sony 85 1.8, Sony 90 Macro. I Feel like the Batis can replace the 35 1.4 & Sony 90 and be an all-around lens for me.
40mm F2 lens is an interesting one. I have the 35mm F2.8 and the 55mm F1.8 - so won't be picking it up. I really love the 35mm and lean to it more. I always wished they did a 35mm F2 with autofocus (I do know about the loxia).... I think I would have lived with the extra size and weight of a 35mm F2 (depending on how small it could be - The 35mm F1.4 was WAY too big!). The 40mm Batis though... I may have just bought one lens if it had been out first. Alas - I will stay with my 2 existing Zeiss primes.... its a hard life...
So I got two tickets in accident because I thought I didn’t get the first one but then i saw i had two tickets. Is there a way of me changing the name on one of them so my friend could come with me because I know that it’s sold out now?
LOVE your channel, sir! Recently made the Sony switch...don’t have a 35mm or 50mm prime just yet...thinking this over the 55mm 1.8 to start...Thoughts?
Sigma 30 f1.4 on APSC focuses pretty close and it is nice for not too close portraits. It is equivalent to 45mm FF. Anyway I prefer to not swap lenses on jobs and always carry 2 bodies, usually one with a wide angle 24 / 28 equivalent and a 45 / 55mm equiv whether I use APSC or FF. I wonder how the IQ of this Batis compare to the Tamron 28-75.
Strange comparison. Shouldn't it be between the 24mm Sony and the 25mm Zeiss? Due to a DOF calculator ( www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html ) the depth of field is as follows: 40mm F2.0 at 24cm = 0,36 cm 24mm F1.4 at 24cm = 0,72 cm
24 GM, sharp corner-to-corner, it's as light as a sigma 16mm F1.4 (yes I know its a crop lens but that's what make the 24 GM amazing.) + you can crop it with an A7RIII and get a 35mm F2 equivalent focal length. I find the 40mm F2 in an akward place.
I had initially purchased the 55mm f1.8 & never fell in love with it. The minimum focusing distance was frustrating, since with a small lens like that I naturally wanted to take some up close shots. The sharpness was great, but the bokeh was somehow not as pleasing as the Nikon 50mm f1.4 that I'm used to using. Very subjective, but there were some shots of small branches & leaves that I just didn't like. I also had trouble getting reasonably smooth handheld video with that lens, but that was very likely user error. If I took more portraits, I would have kept the lens, but other than being small & super sharp, it didn't feel right to me. I ended up getting the Sony 24mm f1.4 instead. I already had that focal length covered with the 24-70 G Master, but I love how small & light this lens is. I'm really looking forward to trying it out with a gimbal for video, but the handheld video on it seems good so far. The low light performance is excellent, it's super sharp, & as you said it's a nice walking around lens. You can still take architectural or landscape shots & then switch it to 36mm in ASPC mode for tighter shots. I have no regrets with this lens & looking forward to testing it out for aurora & landscape photography soon.
still wondering why you haven’t covered any of the loxia line up, i own the 35, 50 and 85mm, and honestly they just might be the otus native equivalents for the sony system, all regarded as near perfect lenses
Great video and logic for your decision to get the Batis 40 Jason. That makes perfect sense for your workflow. I got my 24GM tonight and I'm in love. CF on it is amazing, and the 1.4 and bokeh is next level. I have the 90 macro already, so the wide angle shallow look is unbeatable for me. Also, see you at Sammy's on the 9th!
hey Jason love your vids. Can you give me a recommendation on a wide angle for my R2 that isnt a Gmaster lens? was thinking Loxia 35, Batis 25 or sony 35 ( the little one ), or should I just get the new Sigma. I can only get one and don't wanna make a bad choice lol

depends! Sometimes prime lenses are great for general walkaround situations or giving you a more unique look at the faster aperture. If you like shooting wide at 24mm a lot with the 2470, the GM might be worth your wild
Jason Vong thank you thank you 🙏🏾 I will look into that glass later on this week
Go fast and wide....you can always punch in with Super 35 and yet again with clear zoom giving you 24mm, 36mm, and 54mm with one lens.
Should I get the new 35 1.8 or the Batis 40 2.0??
I have the Zeiss 16-35 f/4 , 85 f/1.8 and the kit lens. I need a wide portrait lens for photography. So I am thinking between the 24 f/1.4 or a future 35 mm f/1.8. In the meanwhile I will get as much as possible from the kit lens.
Another very entertaining vid JV!
Cheers,
Doc
thanks Doc!
How about 25mm F2 Batis vs Sony 24mm F1.4
coming
24mm F1.4 overall better
24gm will beat batis sh*t out
YESSS ive been looking for this video and theres none
Please@
Hey Jason I was thinking about getting the 24mm 1.4GM as a walk around lens but more than that it seems like a perfect gimbal lens what do you think there? Currently have the 28-135 f4, 35mm 2.8, and 85mm 1.4GM.
I also agree, great gimbal lens!
Hi Bryan i just bought the 24mm last friday and all i can say even in handheld its a beast! and this week i will be using it on my gimbal and i think its a awesome combo, btw you can watch my new test video for this lens on my channel it was all shot in 1.4 and handheld.
Thanks for another great review Jason! Ha ha btw, PJ and you are both favourites of mine! I sold all my canon gear and now planning my Sony setup.
I don't really need a close focusing lens so the 24mm 1.4 sounds more appealing. I like the de-click switch for the aperture. This was a great video. You made good arguments for both lenses.
You will love the 24mm
yeahhh, finally, been waiting for this, thank you, I’m your big fan
Thank you! :D
Jason Vong hi again Jason, if I may ask, since I currently have Sony 85 1.8, and I’m considering between these two lenses, what do you think which one should I get for walk around and everyday use? (I love taking portrait, coffee shop, food, drink, and landscape sometimes)
Thank you
24GM ALL THE WAY! You can switch between 24mm 1.4 and 36mm 2.1 by taking advantage of super 35 mode and high megapixel of A7riii.
hell yeah!
Isn't super35 mode meant for video? I mean if you're shooting photos you can crop it later and have the same quality.
@@morimetz Yeah, I never understood this either. Using super35 mode, you'll just get a lower res image. So there's no advantage. You're cutting out stuff from your image for no reason and as you said. You could just have done that in post.
@@JacobChristiansen1 crop now or later I choose crop while shooting.even in super 35 the IQ is still ridiculously and more than needed for client work
@@morimetz Could definitely help for framing. But yes, if you get used to it and know what you're doing you can crop in later.
40-24=16 but 50-40=10, which you think it is close to? so it is a different focal length. You should have compared with the 50mm.
If it would be an f1.4 maybe, but honestly at f2 I find the Zeiss Batis 40mm f2 a bit boring. I don't need the closeup capability, but I do need shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh.
If it's 1.4, the lens would be massive. Like Sigma's upcoming 40mm. F2 ain't bad. Close to 1.8 haha
Thinking of getting a 50 prime but the 40 looks to be a much more interesting focal length than a 50. Is it worth it getting the 40 over a classic 50?
Like sony 50mm 1.8 FE? If yes, most definitely.
Whens that weebill lab video coming?! Just pre ordered mine!
haha working on my first impressions.
Definitely do a review video on Weebill Lab! Love to compare the smoothness vs Ronin S. Also have Weebill on preorder
I would also go with the 24 G master!!! It's an amaizing lens!So sharp and verry impresive build quality!!
i had the 40 f2 and i sold it and regretted it now i’m looking to pick it up again it’s such an amazing lens i’d recommend to anyone
Thanks for the video. As someone who does not plan to do product shoot in foreseeable future, I'm NOT sold at all on this Batis. Wide angle GM would be amazing addition.
nice!!
Gustavo Ibarra I did the right thing and bought the sony 100-400 so I don’t replace anything 😂 I’m curious to hear your thoughts when you receive it!
I find it bazaar you are comparing a 24mm vs. 40mm focal length? Apple = Orange?
What's the best one-size-fits all lens I should get for a a7iii?
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8
so are you not getting 35 1.4 anymore and getting the 40 f2 instead?
yep! i talked about this in a previous 35mm 1.4 video. I said I would wait to see what the 40 has to offer first and it exceeded my expectation
So I got two tickets in accident because I thought I didn’t get the first one but then i saw i had two tickets. Is there a way of me changing the name on one of them so my friend could come with me because I know that it’s sold out now?
I think it should be ok as long as you have the other ticket. If anything, shoot them a message!
Got it and it worked thnx man🙌🏽
think I'm going with 40mm also. can't hurt to use my sigma 16 in aps c mode on a7iii.
Believe me it's a lot sharper than the Tamron Zoom. The Batis 40 is one of the sharpest lenses I ever used (even compared to the other Batis lenses).
Strange comparison.
Shouldn't it be between the 24mm Sony and the 25mm Zeiss?
Due to a DOF calculator ( www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html ) the depth of field is as follows:
40mm F2.0 at 24cm = 0,36 cm
24mm F1.4 at 24cm = 0,72 cm
please compare Batis 40 f2 with Sigma 35 f1.4
What about the Batis 24mm? I use it all the time.
I used it in NY, it was fantastic. Excellently sharp!
Do you know if the webill will hold the 16-35 gmaster on an a7iii?
it should but i need to test to see how stable it is
are you sponsored by zeiss? if not, what makes you have such a hardon for the batis lenses?
Hi Jason, thank you for the comparison. Now I'm thinking about the Batis 40 vs Zeiss 55. I would like to listen to your opinion on this.
Personally I would go with the 24mm G Master, but I don’t have as many 24 focal length lenses as you do. Can’t ever go wrong with the g master.
it will be awesome for ya!
Can you do a review of the Laowa 15mm vs Zeiss 18mm? :)
I can't promise that but me personally, I am too reliant on AF
Thanks for sharing your experience, Jeff!
I have searched sigma 24 1.4 vs sony 24 1.4... But there is no video... Particularly on these 2 lenses... Can u plz make one...
Both good, I prefer the Sony though
Great job on the review. I'll see you at Samy's with my son who wants to learn from you.
See you both there!
still wondering why you haven’t covered any of the loxia line up, i own the 35, 50 and 85mm, and honestly they just might be the otus native equivalents for the sony system, all regarded as near perfect lenses
See you then!
I have a Canon 40mm f2.8 pancake and Canon 50mm f1.4. The Canon 50mm f14 has been unused on the shelf for a few years. I use the 40mm a lot.
hey Jason love your vids. Can you give me a recommendation on a wide angle for my R2 that isnt a Gmaster lens? was thinking Loxia 35, Batis 25 or sony 35 ( the little one ), or should I just get the new Sigma. I can only get one and don't wanna make a bad choice lol
Can you make a video about how you focus with video (24fps and 120fps, mf or af, etc) ?! I know you made one talking about the focusing modes for video but more like a behind the scenes one :)
I will see what I can do
How do the close up capabilities compare with those of The Tamron 28-75?
Not sure, the lens is still sold out :(
Your reviews are very useful. Thanks for the details 👍🏻
Do these Be Alpha Events ever come to the east coast?
There were two in NY. I think Miami is on the list soon
OriginalHawk I saw on the website there’s gonna be one in Boston, Nashville and Orlando as far as east coast. Boston and Nashville already have November and December dates listed.
thanks!!
Sigma 40mm f1.4 is comming for sony FE FF. Pls compare them when possible. Thank you.
I predict the sigma will be sharper but the performance will be better on the Sony
Can you review some of the cheaper, Rokinon AF lenses?
Hi Jason,, love your content,, what is that alpha case for your phone?
I really hope someone can answer this. Where did you get the Alpha pop socket for the phone lol. My friend told me he can never go without his so if im gonna get one this is the one I want lol
Thanks
not sure you all notice that the aperture change roughly to f4 when close focus. this is crazy, not sure whether is zeiss releasing new firmware to resolve this issue and so disappointed as this is zeiss product.
Man I’d get UPset too if I was mistaken as the kid from up.
HAHAHA!
Will you be getting the webill gimbal?
yep
