I picked up a Batis that was purchased and never used for $800, & I am VERY happy I did. I love the color rendition, the pop, and accurate solid focus. 2 things that put me over the edge initially were the excellent weather sealing, and the image stabilization . . . but WOW, the image quality is NUTS ! Great lens, can't go wrong with either.
just picked up the zeiss. was back and forth with the GM but the weight was my deciding factor. When hiking that extra pound would be killer. Great video
Know this is an older video but I bought the Batis in 2015 which was two years ahead of the Sony 85/1.8. As simple as that. Bought the Sony 85/1.4 GM in late 2016. Again before the f/1.8 was available since 85mm was a key focal length to me after owning the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II. Now also own the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L. Waiting on Sony for an f/1.2 as well. Thank you and take care.
For Toy shots, Zeiss 85 has more contrast to show the texture and details of the timber. Sony 85 F1.8 is sharp, but not much contrast and the colour is a bit light.
I wonder that it is only very few that think of a macro lens to compare with other short tele lenses, I have used 60, 90 and 100mm macros for 24x36mm (fullframe) format and 120mm macro for 6x6 format for many years, macro lenses are so very good allround lenses and also perfect for portrait ! Right now I use Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, Leica R 60mm Macro-Elmarit 2.8, Tamron SP 90mm 2.5 Macro Adaptall-2 52B and Sony 135mm 1.8 GM plus many more lenses that I use less frequent. At the moment there are none new lenses in 60 to 100mm primes that I think is good enough for my use !
Yeah but now a days most of the Sony cameras have image stabilization in them already, So is it really that much of a difference? It’s better that the camera has IS more then the lens!
@@GLIMPSE_00 While it's true that the Batis line comes from an age with less IBIS camera's, it is not true that IBIS is better than OSS. The sensor can only move so much and hence, IBIS is very useful for shorter focal lengths, while OSS is a major benefit for longer ones. It's not coincidence that when mounting an OSS lens to an A7iii, the camera will utilise both IBIS and OSS as a single hybrid system, and that the 70-200GM and 100-400GM have OSS for those exact benefits.
A friend is selling his Batis 85 1.8 lens, but I just bought the Sony one. Great review, from my point of view the Batis is indeed better. I loved the pictures coming out of that lens more, but the 400 extra is the dealbreaker for me. Thanks, keep on making great videos!
Well I have the Sony 85 1.8 but have just bought the Batis. Looking forward to testing it out and selling the Sony. The Sony is good but found the colours a little muted
Selling my sigma 85 DG DN for the batis. I also have used the sony. The flare, the weight, and the OS makes it a winner. For sharpness go with the sigma.
"That Zeiss look is a real thing.". It took me a lot of sceptical years and experience to know what that means. Years in which slowly, but surely, sharpness, overcorrected CA and "soft round bokeh balls" have taken back seat to lively DoF transitions, beautiful color separation and contrast, artistic/lively/non-distracting bokeh patterns, and small form factor. You know, basically every lens property that is NOT scored on DXO. Every lens is a compromise and I think the 85 Batis more than the others, weighed "art" the heaviest in that compromise.
thanks for this, as I'm trying to choose. I really cannot see any difference between these two in terms of IQ. It's really hard to see any additional pop from the Zeiss in this. Thanks for the vid
I think the resale is actually quite similar for both since they're both pretty well sought-after. I sold the FE for just under $500 recently. The picture quality of the Zeiss can't be beat, though.
@@MattJackson_RUclips Great. Then I'll keep an eye on deals for the Batis 85mm. I hope I can get it for $800. That's how much I paid for my Batis 25mm last year, right before the Christmas.
@@Loachie90 I saw it at night when I was in bed. I didn't buy it immediately and next day the offer was gone. I got my 25 batis last year around this time for $800. Hopefully they reduce the price again.
They both autofocus at the same speed with no hunting at all, especially if you have the focus area set perfectly for your scenario - virtually no difference between the two. However, the FE might have a slight edge overall only because you can toggle back and forth between auto and manual super quickly, making it a little more versatile.
@@stevenstevensteven4 My pleasure. And thanks for watching! The Batis is the one I kept due to the color and depth rendering and its amazing detail. I use it on every shoot.

Love the Zeiss. Really excited to give the GM a try soon, but it’ll be hard to compete against that Zeiss color and contrast.

The fe 85 1.8 is just exceptional the only thing it lacks for me is the stabilisation that the batis 85 has

@@HumanityDone I like the color rendition and the flare it produces. Sigma is very sharp if that’s what you are going for. Ultra sharp 🥲

The Zeiss has Lens build Image Stabilization - definitely the better choice here

It’s an amazing lens!
This video is 3 years old now but can you shoot at a slower shutter speed because of the image stabilization in the zeiss batis? If yes, by how much
I'd still stick with the general rule of double your focal length = I wouldn't count on IS to help when it comes to the sharpness of your image.
@@MattJackson_RUclips I meant that the oss and ibis stack so you can use them both but this only works with the a7rv and about 5 sony lenses as of now

Zeiss batis may actually have an edge or it may be just propaganda or cult but if so many creators vouch for it, I am going for Zeiss.

Why is your skintone excessively orange?
Because I aggressively overly saturated the footage. To do it over again...

67mm on both
