I love the 85 Batis. The G master might be sharper and have the perfectly rounded bokeh, but for portraits, the Batis has the perfect creaminess to make people beautiful.
@@ProdChikara The Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T* are a very nice Lens, not only for portraits, but also for fx Landscape and street/urban photography, I can recommend it ! I bought it last year for US $550 (taxes included) in excellent condition, more than worth the money !
Hey Desmond, love your videos. Is this still one of the best prime lenses for 2023? If not what are some other ones that you would consider changing to?
I love this lens - but my best prime of 2023 has to go to my 35mm F1.4 GM. It’s been my absolute favorite lens for photography and b roll for video. But with that said - one of my favorite lens pairings is the 35mm + 85mm primes - which give me great coverage and some very different shots. Another that pops out is the 50mm 1.2 GM - it’s huge though - but obviously beautiful shots. I haven’t tested the new 50mm f1.4 yet - but it probaly consider the 1.4 before the 1.2 for my personal use.
Great video. So the AF will definitely be good enough for interviews and talking heads with the A7SIII/FX6? I ask because a guy running video tutorials for the FX6 advised me to go with the Sony 85 1.8 due to AF being better with truly native lenses but the Zeiss is the better lens and my preferred option
The autofocus is still incredible on these newer bodies - obviously the newer Sony 85 1.8 is housing a newer autofocus system - but the autofocus before was already amazing - probably overkill for most. But you could rent both and just test them head to head to see if it meets your needs.
Great info, great content. I have seen some video stated the Batis has ever slightly cropped in compare to other FF 85mm lenses. Are you able to confirm that?
That’s awesome! The Sigma is honestly such an incredible lens for the price too. I’ve always been happy with the Art series of lenses. My 24-70mm Art is another favorite lens I love using.
Hey Desmond, like your video as always. Wanna know if you really can tell when the stabilization in Batis 85mm goes with A7siii /Fx3 active stabilization will make a different in doing video? I only shot video and I am seriously considering this Batis 85mm for my a7siii after watching this video of yours, mostly because the stabilization on this lens. Please advise, Thanks
Hey! The in body stabilization does make a difference. Especially in the two scenarios I use my camera. 1) 24fps, Active Steady shot (10% percent crop) and the 85mm for hand held is really helpful. 2) 120fps, Standard Steadyshot only and the 85mm for close up slow mo - this is really helpful especially because the shots are so tight and twitchy movement can be really obvious. Its honestly a gorgeous lens and if you're not budge constrained - this is a great option among the other 85mm available for the e-mount.
Hi, I know you didn’t ask me, but. I don’t like to put that extra piece of cheap glass in front of my $2000 lens. I do keep the lens cover on when I’m not shooting.
At the time those were the prices. But you’re right! They’ve gone down - especially over the holidays and with new lenses coming out. Also the pre owned ones are a great buy.
I was never a fan of Zeiss lenses because I thought they were all overpriced. But recently almost all the people who use these lenses swear on them and it makes me really curious. What is so special about a Zeiss?

December 2023, I got the Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 used and I love it, light and easy to handle, excellent build quality to last for many years.
How do you feel about it now? Looking to get it for my A7iv as a portrait lens and some video

Sigma 85 1.4 is awesome, but it's geared more towards stills than video. Breathing and manual focus is "slow". Continuous af isn't great either.
I agree the batis is my go to lens. BTW 500 is a great accomplishment. Keep going! Take care.

Lol appreciate it man! Will keep posting new videos and hopefully keep growing 🙌🏼
Nice vid man! Can’t wait for that Onewheel video 🔥

@@ItsDesmond thanks for the reply Man!
Would this be worth it in 2023 if i can get it for $500 like new
Where are you seeing it for $500 new? Everywhere I am checking it’s $1200 new around $900 used 😞
@@josephinevera9966For real, I wouldn’t even ask for that price. I would open my wallet immediately. I managed to find a used one for around $800
Still a great lens???...for me it's a fabulous lens...it's the lens that help me decide to switch from Fuji to Sony.Thank you!
you can say the Batis is still pretty ... badass
Do you use uv filters to protect your expensive lenses?
I do not. Usually a lens hood or a variable ND filter for my video lenses. Haven’t had any issues before or need UV filters.

My oled display doesn't work. Anyone have the same problem with this lens?
I might be crazy but the prices seem quite a bit over. Which is great thing for everybody here. Just throwing it out there
