A great selection of lenses. A 24-70 and a 70-200 is always a must, but I use the sigma and mark 1 of the 70-200. Would also give an honorable mention to the tamron 17-28 to cover wider focal lengths and a fraction of the price of anything from Sony!

  • @ChrisA2617
    @ChrisA2617 Год назад +15

All good choices.... I think you're missing the 24-105. Yeah it's an F4 but combine the great image quality, almost zero focus breathing, OIS and an incredible focal range, this lens is can literally do it all

    • @KofiYeboah

The 24-105 and 20-70 and 16-34 f4 are honourable mentions , but in a scenario when money is no object , I’m f2.8

My choice of 6 third-party FE lenses:
    Tamron 20-40 f/2.8
    Tamron 70-180 f/2.8
    Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8
    Sigma 24-70 f/2.8
    Samyang 50 f/1.4 II
    Viltrox 16 f/1.8
For around 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost of the native lens setup, and for most situations, these would be very viable alternatives.

True! "best" does not rhyme well with cheap, when it comes to Sony lenses.
Since I picked 20-70 F4 G, my 20mm F1.8 has been in the bag for quite some time. I sold my 24-70 F2.8 GM after I got Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8
However, the unrivalled lens so far is 35mm F1.4 and 50mm F1.2, they truly shine in the low-light.
    I use a two-camera system, ZV-E1 is permanently paired with 20-70 F4 and α7 IV is flexible.
The only one I am missing is 85mm and I waiting to see if there will be a second generation with faster autofocus (and perhaps with F1.2, imagine that!)

    Again a great Video Kofi!!!
I share your love to prime lenses due to the great Bokeh, the lowlight-performance, the weight and the overall image quality. I also prefer the 20F1.8 over the 24F1.4 because of the wider range, the newer linear autofocus system, the slightly better Image quality and the ultra lightweight for using it in a gimbal. I also like the 14F1.8, the 35F1.4 and the 50F1.2 with their outstanding performance and compact sitze. In addition I have the 135F1.8, which complements the 50F1.2 for portrait shots with an even softer Bokeh by eliminating the background completely and give a closer second shot in interviews. In addition it's the perfect lens for the Bokeh-control effect.
And last but not least I love the 90M2.8 macro lens for great detail shots.

The same with me, because my lens bag hast only space for 6 lenses. But in my opinion zoom lenses are always compromises in order to save time by not having to change lenses. But you are shooting on planned sets with cinematographic ambitions like me. What for do you prefer zoom lenses? I am shooting with full frame sensors mainly because of the shallow depth of field. With 2.8-lenses I would loose a bit of this cinematic look. And if I need 200mm I take my A7IV with the 135F1.8 in crop mode.

Awesome video! Really enjoyed how you showed the footage you got from each lens. Something I do wonder, though, if you have the 24-70 mm f/2.8, how often do you find yourself actually using the 35 mm and 50 mm primes? I'm torn between pairing my 20 mm f/1.8 lens with just a 24-70 mm f/2.8 or pairing it with both the 35 mm f/1.4 and 50 mm f/1.4 lenses instead.

Great picks! I own the 24-70 GM II, do you have the original GM or the GM II? I think my next lens will be a 50mm 1.4 as I need a fast one and I like 50mm, it is not too wide. That is the thing I loved with my GH5 and SIgma 18-35, it was never really that wide, even at 18mm because of the sensor, but I feel like even 24mm on the A7S III is a bit too wide for my taste. I am interested in the 35mm too tho. Do you know if there exists a lens closer to 45mm?

Yo Kofi, Varsity Stadium! Is that an athletic (track /7 field for those that are unaware) athlete? Unable to wrap my brain around the 14mm GM, 20mm is nice though. Like the 50mm 1.2 it is FAT boy though and I don't like the weight so the 50mm 1.4GM (shaper) I will grab instead. I am loving my 135mm GM & Will get the 70-200 GM (II) soon. ...almost forgot i quite like my 35mm GM & the 85mm 1.8 is steady, just used that on a shoot last week and it turned out better than i thought (buddy was overseas with my 135mm).
...don't even get me started with "focus compensating breathing," Sony come on you know what we are talkin' bout (A7Siii & A1)!

Would you recommend the 20&35mm combo or the 24&50mm combo? (I shoot clubs, DJs, fitness promo and modeling videos mostly). Let me know which one would be more beneficial as a video shooter... or maybe a 20&50mm combo... Thanks ;)

I can also use both lenses on my A7IV which has a super 35 crop (plus x1.5) in 4k60 so 20 becomes a 36mm with the other features turned on and my 35 turn into a 63mm lens... ridiculous, but that's how it is.

I think there's a big problem with this mentality. Filmmaking isn't just what is the best autofocus. Filmmaking covers so many different situations. For scripted content you should aim for something that has a much more accurate manual focusing system.
The Sonys focus by wire is just a big failure when manually focusing. Learn how to manually focus to build some skills:)
