Dude! I made a drunk purchase of a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 about 6 years ago and I regularly thank myself for it. That lens has taken some amazing photos over the years. I didn’t “need” it at the time but now I love it.
I never comment on videos because I never feel the need to, but the format of how you presented all the information I was looking for is superb! Subscribed! And thank you for this amazing video!
Wow thank you! It really means a lot to hear this! I hope I can make more videos that are just as helpful. It's always tricky wondering if what's in my head makes sense to someone else 😁
I think what you mentioned about how believing that wider focal lengths were the way to go, then learning to love tighter focal lengths later - goes the other way too. I was always in the school of thought that longer focal lengths and the compression you get from it made everything prettier, but then as of recently, I've learned to appreciate the perspective warping of wider lenses. Going too tight in focal length prevented me from learning how to compose with leading perspective lines other skills i wouldn't have otherwise learned when shooting longer focal lengths only.
I agree 100%. It's a big reason why I still recommend people get a "kit lens" when starting out with cameras. It's usually a good way to learn a bit about your own shooting style and then you can decide what you need more/less of as time goes on.
Got the 90mm sony macro and its amazing! It's only 2.8 but that's a tradeoff I'm willing to accept for the macro feature. This lens covers a lot of uses!
I cut my portrait teeth by experimenting with f.1.8 - f.5.6 because a lot depends on the subject and the environment. In the studio I would test having the background closer or further away and trying to find that sweet spot. I did this with the Mannequin Head, no model or client would've survived this... Many portraits were made with higher f stops to make more of the head appear in focus. It's seldom that I really liked the f.1.8 in the traditional client portraiture. It's another thing when I'm doing more creative stuff. But the versatility of the 85mm is fantastic.
Great video Tom. I've bought the Sony 85mm f.1.8 for portrait photography and was thinking of getting the 50mm as well, but I managed it all with the 85mm. Lately I've used it in a client video - for the exact same phenomenon you're describing - the background seems closer. Instead of the 35mm prime that I'd usually put on, I took the 85mm... Since we were in a corridor that had at least 15 meters behind the subject, the lens and the camera setup gave us quite nice visual appeal of that (boring) background.
@@tombuck Haha, stunning is a strong word when describing the industrial warehouse look. But now when you wrote that, I realized I could've placed a practical light here and there. Always something to learn :-)
Yeah, I went for the cheaper 85mm some time back. And I think you're right, the 85mm is a great balance of focal lengths. I got the Sony 135mm and often have to look for an excuse to use it, as I often end up going to the 85mm. When you mentioned the way your 85mm focuses, it made me feel better about my purchase decision. I saw in a few RUclips videos that the "cheap" 85mm from Sony focuses the quickest. But glad you were able to make it work for that special image quality you mentioned. My favorite lens from Sony right now is the 50mm 1.2.
5:41 You're wrong, Tom. If you crop the 24mm image to give the same field of view, the DOF will be the same. The *perceived* DOF from the wider lens is greater, because you frame things differently, and the relative distances between near and far objects in the image are different (as you demonstrated in the next bit).
Wow! This channel is great! I came for the tilta cage for fx3/30 video and start watching other ones!. Definitely the 85mm a great lens that everybody needs to have. Sending this to a friend that’s unsure about getting one.
I'm currently thinking of picking up the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. Never, ever thought I'd be looking for a lens beyond 50 or 56mm. The shots you can get really are amazing!
Need help!! What Sony setting on a7iv can I use to help the review products while doing a talking head video. Camera locks on the face and not the item when in front of the camera 🤦🏻 any suggestions?
That would be the autofocus shift sensitivity. If it’s set high it’ll stick on a subject, and it it’s set low it’ll switch quickly. Always a good idea to cover your face too so the camera doesn’t try and stay on it.
Great video! Did you try testing a 70-200 f/2.8 rather than an f/4 zoom? The result would be a tad closer to the prime although not identical ofcourse.
Great video, Tom! :) 85 is pretty cool! I tried one recently on my guitar channel and it was awesome for a particular headstock/neck shot while playing. Excellent stuff!
As an antique camera builder and antique lens collector, I'd like to point out that the reason the Zeiss is better at f4 is that all lenses are not as good at their "limits" as they are stepping away from them. so the zoom lens is on its limits (f4) whereas the Zeiss is far away from its limits giving a far superior result. also, the Zeiss has superior optics than the f4 because it's easier and cheaper to make a prime lens than a zoom lens. so a good prime lens is always way better than a zoom lens in terms of quality. Great video once again.
Tom, initially I said to myself, why comment; I don't have anything addtional of value to add and I probably dont. ...just want to share that I appreciate your videos, I learn a great deal and honestly wish I had the technical means to level-up my videos to what I see in my mind. I'm re-starting my channel next month after a 2-year hiatus. I have a vintage 85mm with an adapter for my old Sony E-mount mirrorless...I will pull it out with new enthusiasm. Be well...Peace.
That would've been a great comparison! I just don't have a 2.8 on hand to try it right now. Speaking form experience, it'll definitely look better than f4, but there's still a pretty big difference between 2.8 and 1.8. I've used some super nice 70-200 lenses and they're truly fantastic. But the dedicated 85 is on another level for this specific focal length. If you don't plan to use it too often, I think a 70-200 zoom could fit the bill quite nicely, but if you plan to use 85mm often, then a dedicated lens is the way to go.
Great video Tom I've found your channel after watching Peters video. I've only been doing video stuff for just over 9 months now and often thought about if I really need an 85mm lens, after watching this I definitely need to grab my self one.

Great video. I work with a few people who are obsessed with 85mm interview shots. I much prefer using a 50 or a 24. IMHO 50 gives that intimate feel without too much break from the backdrop or impressionist bokeh everything. 24 feels like a person or subject in their environment even when cranked to 1.4f. Just my preference. Keep the lens stuff coming. Give us a Macro lens video.
For my corporate work the 85 is king for interviews, because you don't have resources (time, money, crew) to be worrying about backgrounds. The small angle of view and shallow DOF at say f/2.8 or 3.5 mean you only need to find a small patch of background that's going to work, and you have a nice-looking interview with a non distracting background.

@@tombuck beautiful. What are the pre amps like on the fx3?
Man I love that Sony FX3. Thanks Tom for making me spend over 4 grants on a new camera! How dare you :D
I don't use any primes. I have four zooms 16-35, 24-70, 35-150, 150-500 ok five, my Cine-Lens MK18-55 (Super 35). Yes, I don't get the 1.8 but my 2 to 2.8 but I'm ok with that. I don't care to buy anymore, and for my use it's good enough. My Tamron 35-150 2-2.8 isn't quite as good but it's darn close. But if your doing paid photo work then it's a must have I would guess...
I'd love to get a good zoom, but I've just always been a fan of primes for a lot of things.
I love this and I will use my 88mm more now.. (55mm 1.2) on a crop sensor
Yes! 1.2 is amazing.
love my 85mm Batis. 2nd prime of mine (purchases highly influenced by Peter L ...ha!)
Yep, he’s to blame for my purchase as well.
85mm talk before sony 85mm f1.2. I feel like it will come next week or month. Because shops lowered the price of all 85mm
Oh I didn't know there were rumors of a new one! I bet it'll be awesome and expensive 😁
We need a video of his greatest puns. 😀
It would be 1.5 seconds long. 😉
Have this lens coming in on loan today actually!
Oh nice! I'm sure it'll be super fun.
The Dad jokes make this video haha
Great video but more importantly...which Funko Pop is that? As a piano player would love to get one.
It’s Gene from Bob’s Burgers 👍
The batis has lens stabilization which is worth noting..
That's true. I think it helps, but truthfully I think my cameras' stabilizers do most of the heavy lifting.
Notifications gang checking in
I use 70-200 F2.8 to sorta-kinda get the same results.
2.8 would definitely get pretty close.
I’d love to see this vs sigma 85mm f1.4
Awesome video. You remind me of Paul Rudd in Antman lol
Tom, there are multiple things to cover in your channel, but believe me, we are waiting RCP II related topics :-) We have been waiting today for new video :-(
And you'll get it when he's good and ready.
There’s lots to cover with the RCP, but I also like other things as well. There’s also only so much I want to share with the beta firmware since it could change for the official release next week 👍
Being able to swap lenses on cameras opens up a limitless world of emptying my wallet. Also potential, to be sure.
Advise to rent your desired focal lengths from a local gear shop first to see if the first date will be a hit. 💸
Yes! Testing and renting lenses is really important. Something that looks awesome for someone else might now work at all for what you need.
Sigma 105 1.4 sigma art is the best oh and 85 1.2 GM isnt released
Saving up and hope to buy the sigma 105 someday. I still shot with the kit lense and a6400 for my Instagram at @metasploit_studios.
