  • Tips and tricks on downhill pipe welding with a 6010, 70+ or 8010, Pretty much works the same on all downhill rods.
This is my journey to welding pipe. Welder motivation. You can do it any of us can do it. You just have to sacrifice a little bit it to gain a lot. Welding pipe really saved my bacon. I hope this helps somebody have a great day!

People can weld in order to finance their lives or doing any other number of things they decide to do in order to finance their lives and welding isn't a bad way to go about that because really "you can do anything you want to do with welding" just like any of thing you decide to do. For instance, you can work for a man who owns a grass mower repair service or you can own your own mower repair service. Or you can work at burger king or own your own cafe. And that's how knowing something about welding is: you can start your own business and do it your way or spend your life living someone else's dream.

I’m a pipe welder and I’m so glad for men like you that have helped me out in my career. But yes 6010 and 7018 are different ways to run them but what I can tell you is to pay attention to your angle, speed and the toes of your weld. And listen to these old timers they’re very knowledgeable.

I'm a retired pipewelder of 32 years. Ur right about these new so called pipewelders. They think they know everything about pipewelding. They don't know squat. Most won't listen to us old timers because they know it all. I didn't do downhill much in my career but I agree with ur technique for downhill. My pipewelding was mostly high pressure pipe with uphill technique. 6010 root, 7018 fill &cap. Keep up the good work my brother & maybe these wannabes will learn something. Peace!!

I am a pipe fitter/combo welder going on 10 years. I have always loved teaching the younger generation what took me years to figure out. I appreciate you taking your time to teach those that have a drive to learn. I have always wanted to learn all there is to know for my trade. I have welded a wide variety of metals and processes. The one thing I have not been able to master is the bottom of a pipe running downhill rod. I have pictures to show what I’m talking about but it basically always wants to leave a hole on the bottom tie in. I don’t struggle with the top and sides so I started welding the bottom half then flipping it over. That way I can weld two bottom halves but 50% of the time I get a hole on the tie in. What is your suggestion? I’ve heard people say to flick the rod, flick it away, long arc towards you, long arc out taking bigger and bigger steps getting further and further away. The last one seems to work the best for me but still get a crater from time to time.

    • @TaylorWelding

don't forget when talking about 6010 such as 5P or 5P+ (there's a difference in these two rods and how they act) and don't forget that 6011 is a more versatile fast freeze rod than 6010 because you can use it on AC or DC whereas 6010 is only run on 6010

I've been a rig welder specialising in pipe for the last 25yrs, and I completely agree with what you said the gen x'ers are mostly pathetic. I had a helper who spent more time on his phone than working. Needless to say he got run off. If a person wants to learn I will spill my knowledge to them and help them out. If they think they know it all then My lips remain sealed. 6010 can be the easiest rod to run with a little practice or the hardest. When I was taught ,the guy that taught me told me to use both hands and become good at that. Mainly because two righty's on an uphill stretch is ok for one but not the other. One guy will blackout after a few passes. In was also told watch everyone you can and take something from each and try and make it part of your technique. Same with processes don't rely on just one to pay the bills. up here in Alberta we have to use multiple processes to keep the qc guys happy after they go to a trade show where the salesman says with this process each welder can weld 400 inches a day.

    • @TaylorWelding

      400 inches a day! Damn.

That’s what I did I watched everybody I could. And I had some really good men teach me. I think generation Z will wake up. I hope so. Gonna be hard to make a living Peking on the phone

Everyone wants to be a pipeline welder cause they hear about big bucks...which is true for the really good hands...and mad respect for pipeliners...but the trades are in high demand for other industries.
Learn how to weld, how to be a mechanic. Learn electrical. Dont be scared to learn the technical stuff. Do that and you will see how much demand there is in manufacturing. Make 80% of what a pipeliner makes for half the time put in.
Machining as well. These big manufacturing outfits need Jack of all trades to keep the robots running.
