Chris just out of high school . You had your welding certificate immediately you went to the power plant at got the job .
You told me they were going to get you a helper ! You never asked for a dime .

Thank you for this video! I loved it. I am a 50 year old woman who literally just graduated from welding school. Long story short, my life was cut short when I was 36. I woke up to go to work and I collapsed, I couldn’t walk and my body hurt so badly from head to toe. It was discovered that I suffered from a rare autoimmune disease. I was never expected to recover.
Here I am 15 years later, I went into an unexpected remission! I have my college degree but didn’t want to go back to work in what I was educated to do. I am good at woodworking so I decided to try welding. I signed up for school, absolutely fell in love with the work, now I have a little fab/welding/woodworking shop at home and that’s all I want to do! My husband helped me obtain everything I needed so I can practice welding so I can pass a welding certification test.
So, being that I’m older, been through hell and back, have raised 3 sons, I have a lot of life perspective. Because of this, I can tell you that what you said here in this video is 100% true. You have to pay your dues, you have to be willing to do the things no one wants to do, you have to prove yourself, have a good attitude and be willing to accept that you can’t start at the top. This not only applies to welding but it applies to most everything in life.
Anyways, my biggest challenge will be getting someone to give me a chance, to give me a job since I haven’t worked since 2009 due to my illness. Even though that is working against me, I believe in myself, I really love welding and will work hard and I know I will find my way.
Again, thank you for this video. You did a great service by providing this information. Oh, and for those who stayed and listened, they will benefit greatly from your message.

Don’t know where you’re from but I enjoy your videos. I worked construction as a helper and fitter several years AFTER college. Learning to be a “Good Hand” at what ever I did paid dividends all the way to retirement.

My grandmother told me one time, if you go to work for someone and you are throwing rocks over the fence do it. Then if he comes back and says to throw them back over the fence, do it. Done complain it just do it. He’s paying you to work. I always hated hearing someone saying it’s not my job to do that. Myself if I seen something that needed to be done and no one around to do it so I could do my job. I did it.
I don’t think we would ever fit into the union. Lol.
Grandma gave some really good advice. I’m an old man and the advice your giving is excellent these young people have got to paid their dues just like everyone else has. I really like your welding tips especially the 7018 rods. Keep up the good work

Passed my first 6g sch 80 up hill hyp 7010 , 1976 46 yrs , mostly plant work steam line’s boiler maker ,code pressure vessel alloys lots of SS pipe , carpenter276 hastalloy,carbon pipe chrome 21/4 . Hard places , tight places in difficult to make the weld .Job Superintendent would ask me can you make that weld? My answer was always yes ,dirty wet sloppy mud cold even inside a cooling down Economizer air temp inside 120, degrees “can you make that weld” well yeah !!! I have welded my share of O BOY HANDRAILS !! But when culling time came on the job the R O F pink slip they would be for the other welders , because I willing to do what they ask me to do with whining about the hard jobs. No buddy like’s a crybaby welder

Been watching your videos recently and between you, meltin' metal Anthony, and Jody from welding tipsandtricks, I made the all in decision to sign up for my local community college welding program. I have bounced around different programs and jobs these last 6 years and now at almost 24 I'm saying screw it, time to get a trade under my belt. Been in railroad maintenance for the last two years and that really taught me the limits I can put my body through, time to put that effort towards learning something I can maybe one day do on my own, good luck out there guys! My advice if you're young, coming out of high school or even my age, just pick something and try it. Don't think of it as failing to find your career, think of it as one career you don't want, crossed off your list! It took me a longggg time to truly realize this. Pick something, go all in for a few years. Then decide what you want to try next if it's not for you. It's cliche, but true. " It's not about the destination, it's about the journey". I did a general trade program for a year out of highschool, then I did 3 months of aviation maintenance, decided the lifestyle wasn't for me. Worked for a year at my meat dept job in a grocery store. Then I took a pre-health program to get my chemistry and Biology because I thought I wanted to get into nursing, did nursing for a few months, decided also not for me. Quit my grocery job, and now I'm currently working at a small industrial railroad maintenance contractor. Don't get stuck, keep trying new things, find your interests, one foot in front of the other! Don't get stuck in a shitty minimum wage job unless you're in school, put yourself out there, there is so much beyond that first job! keep up the hustle everyone!

Chris, your best vid yet! One of my first pipe jobs in the 80's was at a small refinery of Ergon in Vicksburg MS. They put me to welding 2" in position fill and cap with 3/32 7018, I didn't such a good job BUT WORKED AT IT. They didn't let me go and kept me because I WOULD WORK. They had me doing everything else like you said from running a crane to socket welds. Like you said be willing to learn...! good job.
Being the bull works. I’ve weld with people that were better than me . But I could usually out work them. If I couldn’t keep up I would work though lunch. Thanks for the comment brother

I’m a union Ironworker and joined to be just a welder but there’s so much more to the trade than just that, I learned that being an all around IW is way better than just welding cause once the welding is done what’s next?? Learn everything the trade has to offer, layout, rigging, connecting etc. goes for all other trades too

This 🙌🏿. Union millwright. Joined because I love mechanical work and fell in love with welding too. Having a trade behind a great skill is probably the best thing anybody can do for themselves. Met a cat with every welding and rigging cert our hall offers and this dude makes well above scale. He gets dispatches to go weld for pipe fitters year round across the world. Love to see it
14:40 Guys here at the power plant (permanent employees, not outage contractors) use a piece of saw blade about 2" wide and about 12-14" long instead of a file. Works the same way, though.

Been subbed for about a month now, enjoying the videos cause it gives me something informative to watch. I've been a pipeline helper for 4 years now and by hard work, no complaining and learning everything I can I moved to straw boss doing everything under the sun from operating, hydro testing, welding when I can and so on. Just went to my locals welding school, passed with flying colors and this is the year I'm breaking out. In the process of building me a sweet, convenient bed and then getting my a$$ to work. Love the videos and how you tell it how it is. Thank you

I related to this video a ton, I’ve worked structure and pipe in a shipyard the last five years use a mirror just as much as you start your truck. But when I get a 6g test in the wide open it’s like cutting hot butter. The hard jobs that don’t feel like they’re doing anything for but wasting time. Those are the jobs that make your career.

You'll do well. It's great when a younger person will listen to the wisdom of the experienced. You've got that. Just know now that there are things you'll hear now that won't register or make any sense at all- until months or years later. Then it hits you! And that's ok, it was like that for us with dozens of years of doing stuff experience too. Military jobs are what pay the best-Chris has a video where the other guy talks about working on bases and installations-with very little competition. Check it out and great luck and fortune to you! Build the bank and invest wisely. Let the investing retire you--it is than simple, but then it's not so easy. Go for it.

2nd year rig welder. New to pipe fab and tie ins. Lucky to move close to work and be home alot. This 7018 Is diffrent than 8010 but good yo learn. Currently learning tig every day after 12-14 hr days. Dont got to be the best got to be the most hungry. Don't practice then don't expect to get better. Hustle hustle hustle. Love this trade and people.

My first job out of school was a structural welder on a coal fired power plant at 19! It was tough out welding 50 year old men.

What a great video! And yes, I watched it till the end. I’m 56 and have been retired for over 10 years. I was a carpenter for my life and invested in properties. I live in Fairbanks Alaska and California and spend all my time building everything out of steel. I love welding ( stick ). People approach me in my truck all the time and ask what I do as a welder, I smile and say “ I’m just pretending I’m one “. My truck looks like it would be at home on one of you pipe jobs.lol! Lincoln gtx 250, bottles, hose reels and all.

Tell these guys about keeping your work area clean picking up putting up your tools when your done with them etc . This is what the customer expects you to do. You can do a really good job and leave your area a mess and that’s what they will notice. That half round file has many uses great advice. I just subscribed to your channel keep up the good work.

Im 42 and have a small fab/welding business in Torrance, Ca. Most of my work is with gate, handrail, and random odd jobs but feel like specializing is something would help business. I have more experience in the tig and mig but open to learn stick. Love the channel man and thank you for all your hard work!

Im a welder but when there’s no welding I’m also a pipefitter and a plumber so the company I work for I do it all but I’m there welder when there’s welding to do. It’s good to learn everything if you can learn how to fit, it made me a better welder good tip.

Very informative video. I’ve been welding for 16 years now. And there’s always something new to learn. I wish someone would’ve given me the info that you are when I was younger and starting. But I wouldn’t be where I am. One of the best informative videos I’ve seen about welding compared to all these other RUclipsr “welders”.

@@TaylorWelding the videos I’ve seen. I believe the guys just use maybe a fixed welding lens. Possibly shade 9 or 10 so it’s somewhat visible. I guess I’ll be experimenting on that as well. Best of luck brother. I’ll keep in touch

Can't stand people that think a job is below them. I spent years on a pick and shovel before I got my seat as a heavy equipment operator. My dad was even the head supervisor for the company. He made me and my brother crawl for years before we could walk. Thank him every day for making me suffer through that so I appreciated it when I got those keys and seat.
It really is important. When something is given that should have been earned. It causes real problems.
Lol I remember the call . Bottom of the food chain is the way up . The Indians were so good . You told me they really took care of you .

My wife had to have a C section so I had to be in the waiting room. When the doctor came out he said "It's a boy and all went well and I think he will grow up to be a pipeline welder" I asked why do you say that? Doc replied "Well he is crying."

Hey buddy! I just came across your videos a few days ago and enjoyed watching them. I've been a rig welder for almost 40 years now actually over 40 years since January of 1979 when I broke out. I'm from Houston Texas originally but I live in North Carolina now and I am retired. I just turned 69 to months ago and have a enjoyed the life that I've LED from oilfield work coming out of the well to the tank yards with the finished product I guess you can say I've done a bunch of it. I have lost my sight in my left eye due to macular degeneration and so I do not do any pipeliner code work anymore. I'm just retired to welding on some farm equipment and logging equipment from time to time when the guys call me. It's kind of a bummer but I've come to face it. Anyway I enjoy watching your stuff to try to help the new guys out that are breaking out or some that have been into it a little while but don't hold the hold the experience that I have had and you have had. Hello Tex. Great history Sir. You should look into having that easy glaucoma like surgery that everyone gets. Both my parents had it in their 80s and it was fantastic and simple.
My grandfather was born in 1916 and started his boilermaker apprenticeship in 1935…..built all the stream boilers for the WWII Liberty Ships in Richmond/Vallejo/San Francisco, Ca and supervised 200 Rosie the Riviter/Welders for hull construction during the war years…..then he had an industrial marine repair/fab shop from 1946 to 1986….He had that RK surgery at around age 88 and said he should have had it done 10 years sooner !

Thanks for the advice I am a 22 year old welder been welding a year started on my own and now just going to finish schooling and trying to figure out what type of work I want to do but for now I plan on working for ranchers around my area to get started and get my foot into the door. Is there any more advice you could give me that would be great cause I’m doing my best to soak up as much advice I can so I’m better prepared.

Great info, but on another note, where did you get that awsome hat? I've been in the trade since about 2016 and I'm still learning what ever I can and from who ever makes logical cence. Then I take that info and Taylor it to my style . 👍👍

@@TaylorWelding just to let you know I clicked to look at the anvil, then started scrolling other videos. And just about every time I was going to click off you said "don't click off" it worked even though I wasn't interested in the content. May check the analytics on this video and see how effective that technique is.

Hey there. Like your stuff. I’ve been a welder on and off over the years, mostly working for myself. After watching what you had to say about paying your dues: I got to wondering what you thought about jobs like a pipefitter/welder position that only paid 18 an hour… take them or walk away?
There’s nothing better than on the job training. You could use it like a school for 3 to 6 months.
I got blessed with my first welding job at a LNG plant as a combo welder in louisiana very well payed and the main thing got some people that really like me, was fresh out of school green as can be payed attention at work took advice from all the guys there RESPECTED what everyone told me never said "oh I already knew that" even if you already knew say "thanks for the tips i really appreciate that" also HELP YOUR FITTERS young welders like me!!!! no one cares your daddy was a welder is a super none of that help people out get them to like you make contacts!! EDIT : I was 18 when i started and im 20 now...... at that place stayed there a good amount of time about 9 months i thought i was going out on the first lay off but had people vouch for me and got to stay a couple more weeks because I helped people and welded what they wanted me to weld, when there was nothing to weld go get up on that scaffold and help them fitters fit that pipe they are setting up for you. (also dont be stupid, if they are telling you to do something that sounds dangerous ITS PROBABLY DANGEROUS your life isnt worth more than a job) MAIN THING IS HAVE FU**ING FUN and make that big money

Paying your dues: Something they never taught at school and something your parents should have taught you. It doesn’t matter if you have a PhD, when you show up the first thing you need to do is learn how your skill is applied to your new position, learn who is to either side of you, and learn where you fit in. The fastest way to do this is to help them and in return ask about the history of this place. Unless you are the new CEO you are not coming in as the know it all that is going to rescue everyone.

I been loving the videos but i got a quick question for you. Currently a senior in high school and will graduate and be going to welding school. But my question is should you be picky about the pay if you are trying to get your foot in the door.
Go where you’re going to make the most money in the LONG run.
Don’t go to mig welding job.
I love the honesty about the mig jobs... I would put more on the experience your getting.. remember pipe pays.. there are a bunch of different types of welders.

Hey Chris what do you think about the pipe fitters union? Where I’m at in Washington it seems like the union has a monopoly on all the pipe work
I have No experience with any union ! Up north is predominantly union. I’m in the south
I'm in fitters union in florida.. pay is better up north but we do pretty good here also. I weld/travel for shutdowns just like he says but now I'm sticking to local work. been a nice change to be home every day. What's a non union rig welder making nowadays if you dont mind me asking.. all the RUclips rig welders always talk about getting rich so it must be alot? ;) good content man. I enjoy your videos. 5 years welding, i tell my boss im going for my cwi, he tells me they dont need one for the work we do. So now ive got to figure out my next move. Any advice?
Weld pipe, save your money, buy assets that pay you to own them. I’ve never wanted to be a CWI. you can make more money Welding with less headaches.

@@TaylorWelding I also mow some lawns blindfolded as well, we offer quite a few different options so technically we’re not all alike and just cut grass. Now with welding, that’s different story tho. I can dang weld just as good as the next guy who just started out and left the film on the inside and outside of his auto dark hood man. No question. Speaking of my side hustle skills…. Weeks ago, dang bugger nest 🪹 was so knarly up in this dang corner, didn’t leave any welding rods on it afterwards tho. Cause I got the whole freakin grinder stuck up on there wit a cutting wheel on it and cudnt get that sumbitch back so I let it ride, rolled the extension cord back up on the wall and just wrote it off to training 🫡

Chipping hammers scar up the Weld when you smack it. I file will rake it off. And you can also use your file for bbs and other things

Edit... 25 years in the electrical trade these journeymen passing trade school or IEC think they know it all I've put many 4-8 year guys in their place wanting to be top dog and think they know the codes and when it comes time for inspection well doesn't end well... the best is when they want to argue code with myself foreman and the inspector... I don't know it all I'm still learning and that was the lesson I always tell the young kids... the man that says he knows everything knows nothing at all
I paid a measly 500 bucks for it. It was a family friend. He actually gave me my first piece of pipe to practice on. It’s somewhat sentimental. He had a machine shop and now he’s retired. I was able to get my large and mill from him as well

How can I become a helper if I have no contacts or know any pipeline welders? Im young and work in a shop in middle bury Indiana I can’t find any pipelines around here
There might not be any pipelines around there. You might have to go to a power plant or a paper mill.ect

Hey Chris. I'm in welding school now. I'm 60 years old and I retired from law enforcement in 2017. Anyway, I live on a farm now and weld on equipment here. The neighbors found out I weld and come over when they need something welded. I decided to go through the school and start a little mobile welding business for farmers in the area. Not depending on it for making a living but I would like to supplement my monthly retirement check. All I have to weld with at the moment is an Everlast PowerMTS 211sI Mig, Tig, Stick. Once I start making (extra) money, I want to buy a used engine driven welder and put it on a trailer. I also have an Oxy/Acetylene torch. I could spend money on a generator to use my Everlast, but I feel that would be a waist of money. Any tips and tricks for an old fart like me trying to do what I'm trying to do? Thanks
That’s great woody. I would get a good (older) truck, through a welding machine (gas or diesel) in the back of it. Get 80’ of leads per side.
On your torch hose I really like the Cox hose reel. It really helps. Get an ammo can to keep your rods in. Maybe I’ll make you a video. There’s too much subject matter here to text …Let me think about it

When I got started in welding. I took a course at my local Community College. Our teacher had us weld 6013, 6010 and 7018. I couldn't weld a 6013 to save my life, I was 2 weeks behind everyone else in the class. My Teacher thought when I got to 6010 I would fall even further behind. For whatever reason on my first pass and handed it in. My teacher looked at it then back at me and said "did you do this?!" I was "yes I did" then told me todo 5 more passes and show him again. I did and he passed me on to 7018. He told me in 30 years of teaching his never seen anyone struggle so hard at 6013 and just breeze so quickly with 6010.
That was about 15 years ago, what am asking is. What should I have done as far as looking for a job? I had no idea where to go. At the time I was just an 18 year old kid fresh out of high-school. I've done pretty well for myself nowadays being a mechanic but am looking to start welding on the side. If only to build up my skills and have some fun along the way.

Get a welding machine and practice for 30 minutes to an hour every day.
After you get good enough. Take a test at a shutdown or turn around. Maybe put a ad in the paper for pipe fencing

You said structural is the bottom of the totem pole, but you said hand rails, I thought structural was more like welding big I beams or things that hold a lot of weight, I went to a welding school but I’m still not a real pipe welder yet, couldn’t cap, so I didn’t get my cert but I’m not giving up.
My question, is can you make good money welding structural, because I have noticed a lot of posts on the website road dog jobs offering 40 an hour and 100 a day per diem. To me that’s good money, I can only pull 25 at a company hanging duct and that’s without any benefits package. Can you speak on this and shoot me straight if you get the chance? I’m eager to learn, I like the videos much appreciated. Also I watch to the end I subscribe and I like the vids so help a a brother out 😂
Thanks for the comment Ben. As far as the pay scale goes structure is at the bottom structure being anything other than pipe. Yes, you can make good money structure welding. I did it for a long time and you’ll get better at Welding along the way.
