I'm a student at Tulsa welding school here in Houston Texas and I'm doing pipe right now. I'm learning to become a pipe fitter and I'm actually learning more just by watching all your videos. I can't wait to start working in the field.
I'm attending TSTC in Rosenberg/Houston. The pipefitters/ welders walking through a start to finish position/ set up is amazing. I'm due to graduate in April, but I'm doing small Diy welding around the garage and for school. :-)
I worked with an old fabricator welder who used a cutting torch and a hard wheel to clean it up there are still some awesome masters out there my advice all you young guys look, listen and learn these guys will usually teach you if your willing to learn
I worked with an old timer I swear he could bevel a pipe consistently and it would be just like if you put a pipe beveler on it... Knock the slag off and could damn near start welding on it just a quick pass with a sanding disk to flatten out those kerf lines and bam... I hope I run into that fellah on another job soon, but who knows he may have hung it up by now... actually I doubt it he was the type of fellah he'd probably die the day he retired.
I usually do freehand beveling with an angle grinder and a coarse sanding pad (K36 or K24). No grinding discs, no flap-discs. Keep steady torso position, put the bevel on in six grinding-turning sequences. One has to keep the angle (grinder face/land/nose) consistent. Which is not too hard. Keep a keen eye on shrinking the land back to mm. Sort of like the old timer guy does it I guess.
I’m new to pipefitting for a mechanical company and your video was very informative and helpful. Mt foreman and journeymen are the opposite in their explanations and sometimes contradictory. Thank you for for what you do and be safe out there.
I have a positioner that is made from a piston rod of a pump jack. It's all grounded on my truck and makes doing roll-outs a lot easier. I use a small bit of angle to rest pipe, elbows, or flanges with flat straight slots and bolts. Really helpful tips and I agree with using the the middle of the abrasive disc to better contour the bevel. 🤘🤘🤘
Austin buddy, you're one of my favorite to watch as far as pipeline stuff goes. And I think these how to type of videos are my favorite kind of videos you produce. Please keep these coming!
Just bought a Lincoln 225 Stick welder! Gonna practice a lot and work on a couple of projects here at home but I’ve always wanted to work Pipeline! Super hard to get in if you don’t know anyone but I’m driving up to midland on Wednesday and gonna start knocking on some doors, hopefully one day I’ll see you out there Austin! Thanks for these vids they help a lot for people trying to get into welding 🙏
Awesome video, great info right there. A lot of these new welders want to just make sparks and don’t really know how to run a grinder and much less a torch. This is a good exercise to sharpen ones skills. 👌🏾
I learned to cut and fit without a grinder. All we had was a large, coarse, flat file. I learned a good cut saves a lot of work cleaning up for the weld. Becoming a lost art!
If my math serves my right, you would need to go back about 1/2" to get a 35 degree bevel on a .375 wall pipe and about 5/16" on .250 wall if you wanted a true 35 degrees to practice on. Hope that helps someone
.500w is 5/8" wide bevel to bevel with 3/32 gap/land @ 32-35° bevel. The bevel angle is measured from the spacing tool to bevel edge. I believe your math was correct, just you used the opposite angle. Which wouldve created an unnaturally wide width for the cap.
I use a Trumpf trutool tka 1500 handheld bevel/chamfer cutter. Perfect consistent bevels , no setup, no oxide or burrs, all in a single operation, It's an expensive piece of equipment , but worth every penny .
a good substitute if you don't have pipe wraparounds are some thick roles of sandpaper they work really well if you are just trying to get that square, perfect mark on the pipe
Austin is an excellent instructor. In the olden days, welders would not give up their secrets even if some one threatened to tie them to an acetylene bottle and start a fire under the bottle.
@@mikemullins3761 These days I suppose guys figure that anyone making use of the information is working hard enough to deserve it, too many people will simply be too lazy to worry about it.
The "correct angle for beveling pipe" at least int the hvac pipe fitting world is 37-1/2 degrees. I'm. To sure if this corresponds to the pipelining world or not but that's what angle bevel all standard fittings have on them. Thanks for the great videos, keep them coming! And keep safe out there!
hey Austin good vid, I used to use those flat type 27 discs to grind the bevel and many years ago switched to a type 28 cupped or saucer shaped disc on the bevel and switch back to the flat disc when grinding out root and other passes. the cupped shape forms a natural fit to the shape of the pipe and glides over it even faster than flap discs .seams less fatique as the day goes on.hope this is helpful
Beveling pipe with a cutting torch free-hand is a dying art. I urge everybody to practice, practice, practice on torch cutting a bevel on pipe. It’s the fastest way to prep pipe if you can do a decent job of it. Cut the pipe and clean it up with a grinder. Boom. Done. Next.
Another help skill is learning to to hand bevel without rolling the pipe. I did some hand beveling on some 2 to 4 inch pipe but was lucky enough that the pups where short so I was able to roll the pipe around. I did however challenge myself and try it without rolling the pipe around and that added some new challenges.
I never would have guessed the sanding pad would be faster. I’ll have to try that. And I notice you tend to torch leading further away. I tend to torch pulling it towards me so my hands get more stable as I move in. Is that just more comfortable for you?
Im a recent journeyman pipefitter man id love to see detailed beveling with a grinder i did bolt up for 5 years i need some pratical experience and i'd like to see fitting pipe and washing out socket welds and cutting out butt joints \
I suggest the same thing and if you ever read that book read that book on welders offshore guide , the author of that book suggests that you go purchase your own pipe at a scrap yard bring it to a machine shop have them cut it up in a number of coupons at a 37 and a 1/2 degree bevel And purchase your own welding machine and practice at 6G welding test over and over and over again at home because that's what you're gonna be doing at a welding school and instead of spending thousands of dollars going to a welding school , let your own backyard be your welding school, buy your own welding machine , ac-dc welding machine from northern tool company and purchase your own pipe, have it beveled and start practicing in your own shop or your own backyard, it's a whole lot cheaper than going to school.
Preheat the pipe turn down oxygen to around 5.lbs give or take a little, thicker pipe requires a little more pressure too! PS I like your rig and that Lincoln 300 is awesome!
Just purchased a Lincoln SA 200 last week. Any advice for a Union Boilermaker trying to go into pipeline welding. I have structural welding from college and graduating the apprenticeship. Also I have pass code certification for heavy wall tube. Thanks plus I will be subscribing to your channel. Well explained and very helpful keep up the great work.
What do you prefer to wear for eye pro when you’re torch cutting in a shop setting like this video? Never saw your face but I usually just use my shield since I haven’t sprung for dark glasses yet. Is it worth it?
What wall thickness pipe do you need to practice pipe welding ?? For example black steel post is only 2 mm thick. Can anyone advise me before i buy some for practicing ? Thanks Mike
I'm having a issue that I'm sure some of you have run into before: I can get a halfway decent bevel, but I end up chasing high/lows, running out of bevel, and have to start all over again. Any advice on what I'm doing wrong, or how long this ought to be taking me from start to finish?

It sucks, because you don’t get this until you try it.. anyone can hack an glue, but being square, plumb and burnt through is a test of hands!

We use 30 degree, and generally only a pipeliner will chalk a bevel line for a hand torch. I don't think I ever have in 20+ years.
Good stuff! I was wanting to buy a bevel machine, but now I know better to practice the fabrication aspect.

What’s the more important for power for a grinder, rpm or amps I’m looking for the most powerful on market
probably amps since rpm doesn’t have much to do with power. It can spin really fast but it wont keep it up unless its got enough power feeding it.
Amps for sure

Instead of fumbling around with a tape measure and soap you can use a new 1/4" grinding rock for your reference line or something that's a 1/4".

the problem with a brand new sanding pad is it's only new one.
kinda like you only have one chance to make a first impression

.375 wall = 3/8” wall thickness
