I have been at it almost 40 years. I work with guys who have been at it a long time and they still can not grasp this at all. Many golden arms at there but they are not golden at all. Good job.

Fit the pipe up tight and run a walter .062 disk and create the gap, this will also give you a land at the same time, run a 6010 5p+ at 130 amps, you gotta move because she runs in hot haha

There's a better way than using the flat of the wheel. Think about the direction the wheel is spinning where it contacts the metal - if it's spinning IN toward the middle of the pipe it'll form a burr, but if it's spinning OUT away from the center it won't. And the #1 source of inadequate lands is that burr. You take the burr off and realize your land is smaller than you want? A fresh student will repeat the process but a student five welds in tries to wing it. And hey, even in industry you will save time by keeping your land clean and getting it right the first time every time

Does ASME section IX allow for the use of a grinder throughout the whole test? My school only let me use one for the root and then took it away after. Never ended up getting my cert because I wasn't confident with the little bit of slag on the toes from the hotpass with 7018.

Im still tuning in my preferences, we are taught 1/8-5/32 landing, 3/32-1/8 gap, though I prefer using a flap disc as it makes a smooth landing.

I'm taught 1/8" gap, 1/8" landing and 1/8" rod. I prefer a 3/32" gap so I can just drag the root

But, I'm still learning myself. Only been doing it for a year or so

@@stevez7530 I drag on pipe, whip on plate.
Honestly pipe welding feels easier than plate welding

@@danielmartin531 agree on all points. I definitely enjoy welding pipe over plate

4 tacks every time unless your welding something small. Tie ins are something you need to know how to get right every time.
