It’s funny you got that going for the rods. Years ago I started doing the same with my charcoal for my grill. You’re right. Keeps them dry no matter what. I’ve never had an issue lighting them.
Awesome advice, also seeing that Louisiana license plate made me remember an earlier video, because I said that area in the back ground reminded me of Hwy 30 Gonzales, Louisiana.....
I use to work for a construction co and an old portages welder/ machinist had an d refrigerator with a light outlet and a 100 w incandescent bulb it kept all the welding rods dry and warm.

@@TaylorWeldingJust bought myself a vacume sealing machine for 130 euros. I split new packs of 7018s into bunches of 10 and vac pack them with silica gel packs inside. I leave 100 mm extra on the bag so if I only need 1 or 2 rods I can cut the bag open , take out what I need and reseal the bag. No waste at all.
Like what you've done bud great idea speaking about old rods iv got some nasty very old rods love to use them they teach you how to weld with a bad rod got some old hippy rods to you can really tell the difference in a good dry rod and a old nasty rod it helps you become a better welder I think you know what I mean like your truck looks like a good setup turn and burn brother
If you're in to outdoors and camping like me you might just have or know someone who has a vacuum packing machine. I think the easiest way to keep rods dry is to open a large package and repack them in smaller vac packs. Stores indefinitely and easy to take along and you can se what's in the package without opening. Doesn't require heat or electricity either 👍
"Rod Buddy" containers worked best for me! Also with the belt loop and the racks to hold the tube containers. You're using 10 lbs. at a time and by placing the cap on after you take 6 rods out at a time the rods will stay fresh!
I welded one of those lock hasp U-bolt to my 20 mm can, fits in between the cans flip close handle. Then made the other side so it still hinges but cannot be removed / opened. Thanks for all of your great videos ! Hello From Alaska 👍👍

Mr Taylor thank you I use 4 inch pvc with screw on cap and we put desciant packs in each one to absorb any mosture and seems to work great I will try this with the desicant packs thank you
With Low-Hydrogen rods, from the time you crack the seal off a new can you have a four hour window before they have to be inserted into a heater. We very rarely use low hydrogen but when a welder shows up with a new can I help him out and put the date and time that the can was opened with my initials so no one can walk up behind him and try to get onto him for not having them in the heater.
I enjoy the way Lo-Hy starts when they’re hot. I keep ‘‘em hot when I’m told to avoid getting runoff. I’ve found in super humid environments Philippines, Dominican Republic, South Texas, Louisiana Lo Hy will suck up moisture if not kept in a rod heater and will indefinitely f**** your welds up. Porosity problems All in the X-ray films. Just my personal experience. Take it with a grain of salt.
The atmospheric exposure limit on Low-Hy rods has absolutely nothing to do with how "crisp" they weld or the final appearance/suitability of the weld. Moist rods will leave too much hydrogen in the weld. Hydrogen greatly contributes to weld failure, however you can't tell that until the weld fails (Bay Bridge collapse).
I buy the 10 dollar Walmart toolbox and put desiccant packs in after an initial heating. You'll never have any moisture in there. I don't leave mine outside. I live in an area with 50° swings certain times. I bring mine into my climate controlled garage or barn. Dessicate packs work beautifully. You can even source them from beef jerky 😆 I buy mine though. I build amateur rockets and use them on my motor chemistry.
I experimented with storing rods in a vacuum charged container. I pulled a quick 19-20” vacuum just using engine manifold vacuum, then just closed a valve. Unfortunately I couldn’t really tell if it helped
they make throwaway dehumidifier for gun cases, about the size of a hockey puck that you could throw in the can after working in the rain for a few hours and then toss in the garbage if that helps you to
I can’t do any of that until the boxes get here. If I build them now for sure they’ll be different measurements. I don’t know if I can find that same box again. They’re getting hard to find
Some people use those disposable hand warmers to "vacuum pack" or "absorb" oxygen in long term food storage. Would tossing one into an ammo can of rod help or hurt if you weren't going to use the rod for a while? Thanks in advance.
Just curious, so I'm thinking about buying a used mini fridge to store rods in, do I have to do anything to the fridge for that to work? I'd imagine as long as it's sealed good and they don't get wet it should be fine. But I've heard some people say you need to put something in the fridge to dry the rods
Idk… but your right . They must’ve drank the Kool-Aid. I’ve seen them throw whole boxes of rods away because they were left open for a certain amount of hours. So dumb
How do you get that lid to hinge up that far? I have some of those 20mm ammo cans and the lids won't go back that far. The lid catches on that piece of metal right above the latch. Did you trim it back?
