- Episode 210 - I have decided to create a 'how to' guide for those that are looking to get in to metal detecting and learn how to use a metal detector. I spent several hours watching other channels guides, coupled with my own experience and created my own version. I cover detectors, the kit you need, tones & signals, iron, depth, target size, the land and many more key components so you can get started in this fascinating hobby.

I used to be a member of a local archeology group that did metal detector taster sessions. The main difficulty I found beginners had was keeping metal objects well away from the coil when searching and recovering finds, leading to false signals and confusion. You didn't really cover the technique for pinpointing with the detector to determine the exact location of a signal, so as to avoid damaging finds when digging. I have noticed that a lot of experienced detectorists on youtube (including you) allow the spade to point inwards at an angle when removing the plug, which can lead to hitting the find especially when its deep. I hope I haven't been too negative here, the video was a good starting point for new entrants to our great hobby.
Hey John how are you doing? Thanks for getting in touch with your feedback, it is very much appreciated as I try to use viewer feedback to improve what I do. Yes pinpointing with the coil is something I should probably have mentioned and done a little lesson with using a target and the paper. My bad on that one. Its a lot harder than it looks to create a video like this, I actually did my research, watched other channels guides and wrote a script including topics to cover. I missed a couple of things, but I hope that newcomers to the hobby can take something useful from this video :) Thanks so much for watching and offering your thoughts. I hope to see you on a future episode
Hey duke great vid very helpful for me thanks …..I did my first detecting the other week and found some really old rusty ornate iron pieces …..I have no idea how to clean and look up about these but wondered if you had any advice. ? I wish I could send you a pic as you would probably know better than me lol …..I’m sure one piece is a very old door knocker but it’s so thick with rust and where I found it doesn’t make any sense …..I look forward to any advice
Jason 😊👍
@@jasonhumphries1271 hi Jason, thanks for getting in touch, generally in the UK we ignore iron as 99% of the time iron is just rusty farm junk. I did once find a huge rusty iron lump hammer that I expect would clean up great. I've no idea how to clean rust, Google might know more. Those early months of the hobby can be frustrating, stick at it. What machine do you use?
Y97?!
I use deionised water 💦 hope this helps 🙃
I'm thinkin' about getting into detecting and saw your video was for beginners. I thank you so much for your instructions. I've learned enough to tell me that I can do this, I'm disabled, and it won't bother me physically. Thanks again "Duke." You've set me on a good path to follow.
Hi there Jim, thanks very much for coming along to my channel and for watching this video. I am really pleased that you have learned something from this video. I have full faith you can do this too, disability or no disability. If you have any questions at all, please let me know. In the meantime, have a look at this video if you like, it shows 2 of my best ever GOLD finds, found on the same field, just 7 days apart. One of my absolute favourite videos:

What a brilliant video for newcomers to the hobby like me. Thank you so much for making it clear, concise and interesting.
Hi thanks very much for your warm comments and also for visiting my channel & watching this video. It pleases me to receive such great feedback from something I created :) So thank you, and I hope to see you again on some of my 300 other metal detecting videos. Gareth
Thank you for an excellent informative video.
@@michaelpace773 thanks for watching ☺️
With the understanding that this is a detector for those on a budget ruclips.net/user/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH and that it obviously can't compare with higher end models costing hundreds of dollars, having said that I can say I am very pleased with what I got for the low cost. There are cheap detectors out there likely not worth getting, but this model is an exception to that. I have read very good comment of the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV on a metal detecting forum. If you are on a budget or simply don't want to spend a lot to give this hobby a try to see if you want to keep at it, then I recommend this model as likely being one of the best you can get for one being in the low price range. The 5 star rating is to reflect 5 stars for one in this price range. This comment is from my friend as it was the gift he wanted to buy for himself with some of the money he got for Christmas.
Hi there, thanks very much for visiting my channel and taking time out your day to watch this video. I hope you took something useful from it as many others before you have. I would recommend watching this video next, 2 of my very best GOLD finds found on the same field 7 days apart. You can see it here if you wish:

Very cool! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’m 60 years old and always wanted to metal detect. I look forward to starting now that I’m near retirement. All the best! Jim from Georgia
Just bought a detector. Thanks for this very useful upload.

Good to see you trying to help the newcomers with some sound advice.I had to learn from scratch but having detected over 25 years I think I am well versed in technique.Having said that I have just pulled up my first Gold Stater, what a thrill.
Hi Dave, congratulations on finding a Celtic stater, that's fantastic, dream find right there!
As for this video, I thought I would try my hand at a guide for beginners as I see it as an opportunity to generate views long term. I did my research, watched other channels guides and wrote a script with topics to cover. I think it worked out really well.
Thanks for tuning in, congratulations again on your gold stater and see you on the next
Going metal detecting for the first time in May. My mother has 22acres of land and we’re going to explore! Great video 🫡
Hi Andrew, thanks so much for coming along to my channel and for taking time out your day to watch this video. I am just about to buy my first detectable and have been researching the hobby. This is the first video I have looked at and found it really useful. Thanks for putting something like this up for detector virgins like me. I will be looking out for your other videos. John
Hi John, thank you so much for coming along to my channel and leaving me your great feedback, its really appreciated. It really pleases me to receive comments like this. I put a lot of thought and effort into this video in the hope it would help people new to the hobby just like you. Have a great weekend. Gareth
That was a very thorough introduction to metal detecting. I will be taking away: diging three quarters round the hole to use the grass roots as a hinge to put it back and the deeper the find, the older the find. I'm glad you put in "You will need patience, just keeep going and don't give up" I know from experience people watch a twenty minute video and don't realise that it was six hours of metal detecting ? Cheers mate you've given me a lot to think about, as I start metal detecting and probably saved me a lot of trial and error making stuid desisions 👍 I look forward to watching more videos and seeinng how YOU do things.
Hi Gerard, good to hear from you and I am pleased you have took some useful pointers from this video. Yes metal detecting requires lots of hard work, time and patience. And correct, these videos are a culmination of around 5 hours in a field, then another 5 hours on my laptop editing and putting it all together. Thank you so much for you appreciation and kind words. There are a lot of guys who follow my channel who now use XP metal detectors and are learning from me and my channel, I am always available day or night to help people where and when I can. Hope you have a good day and hope to speak to you again soon. Gareth
Thanks Brother. Ya'll have some deep history on that side of the pond.
Hello & Greetings to you Ken, where about's in the USA are you from? Thanks so much for visiting my channel and taking time out your day to watch this video. I cannot believe this video has received over 125,000 views, this makes me very proud. I do find a lot of coins and artefacts at good depths on some of my English pasture fields, but in truth most of the things we find here are usually 4-6 inches in depth. I recently uploaded this video which shows 2 epic GOLD finds I made a few years ago, both found on the same field, just 7 days apart. I would appreciate your comments:

Lost my wedding ring while skinning a deer in the forest. I suppose i am now involved in a new interesting hobby. Will update when i receive it! Good video. Thank you.
Hi there, wow that's one way to lose a ring. I hope that you remember the location, you should be able to find that pretty easily. It should remain on the surface for a few weeks before the earth begins to swallow it up. Good luck, please let me know if you manage to find it. Thanks so much for watching this video, I really appreciate it. Gareth
I regret to inform that the ring is still in the forest. It could only have been on a small patch as I removed it to keep it clean. My assumption, due to days of searching the same 100m strip, is that a crow is very pleased with his new addition to his collection. There were dozens watching me waiting to help clean the area after the deer was harvested.
That's life.
I have, however, found about everything in that area from aluminum cans to brass ammunition casings. Been enjoying your channel. I wish I could come to older places and search for old coins. If I find things as old as some of the stuff you find in my area, it is almost exclusively always stone. I have found a handful on arrowheads and countless shards of worked flint. This metal detection hobby is a whole new angle on stuff I already do.
@@woodymcwooderson7579 ah sorry to hear that you did not locate the ring. Perhaps it could have ended up in the deer carcass or maybe the back of your car/truck. Sometimes we think we lose something somewhere, then it turns up a few months later somewhere else. Pleased that you are enjoying the hobby though
Found it.
@@woodymcwooderson7579 no way, that is awesome well done 🍻🥳

Thanks for sharing with ya brother, I hope he is enjoying the hobby as much as we do. Off to Tenerife day after tomorrow, still not completed the next episode yet!!
i have had a detector for several years, i found that getting down on my knees and pulling the dirt out and sifting through the dirt with my fingers was lame. you video showed me that i could get a little device you called a pointer. i found one cheap. i think this will change the game for me.
Thank you for this video.

Last summer i picked up a Fisher in a mid price range, and began practicing with it in my own yard an a neighbor's yard. Even though i have some experience using it, i found your video very helpful. My best find so far was a vintage sterling silver heart shaped pendant that is still in great condition. I also found an old piece of lead shaped like a padlock, but it is not a padlock. Perhaps it is some type of weight. I have found a few modern US coins, but nothing very wonderful yet.
Anyway, i am retired and have plenty of time for the hobby. The weather is getting better now here in New England. It will be time to get back out there. I still have a lot of space in my own yard to search before venturing elsewhere. Thank you for sharing your experience and providing such great video content! I can't wait to get back out there.

Thanks for your very informative video I found it very helpful, being a total newbie to this hobby I'm looking forward to your other videos.
Hi there Ian, thank you very much for visiting my channel and watching this video. I am really pleased you have found it useful. It seems to have helped a lot of people, almost 75,000 views on this one, quite an achievement for my tiny metal detecting channel. If you ever have any questions, please as away, I am always happy to help when and where I can. It really is a fascinating hobby once you are at one with a good machine and have permission on really productive land. Thanks again and i hope to see you on some of my many other metal detecting videos. Gareth
Very excited to get into this, even if I never find anything crazy, I’ll have fun thinking I did! I tried magnet fishing, but that was a lot more work and time than I have, this seems like a more relaxed hobby
Hi Jim, thanks very much for visiting my channel and taking time out your day to watch this video. I really hope you took something useful from it? I'm blown away that this video has had 75,000 views, that's crazy for my channel. I once bought a magnet and rope, but never ended up using it as it sounded a bit dirty and you can't find any gold or silver. Metal detecting definitely requires a lot of time and patience, more so than magnet fishing. But I wish you luck in your new found pursuit, any questions, let me know. Gareth
Thank you very much, I'm new to this and you were very helpful... thanks again

Great video Gareth, you have helped me a lot on my journey. Top guy...
Hi mate, thanks, I hope that this video will help the detectorists of the future. Couple of things I missed out regarding gloves and pinpointing with the detector, but they are 2 things I do not use so slipped my mind. See you on the next episode, off hot air ballooning this evening..
I just joined a local club (CA, USA) so that I can use the detector that I bought years ago. I appreciate learning techniques from you. Thank you!
Hi Katy, thank so much for the very nice comments and thanks for dedicating 20 minutes of your life into watching this video of mine. I spent quite a bit of time and effort making this, but it makes me very proud to know over 43,000 people have watched this and hopefully taken something positive or educational away from it. If you ever have any questions please let me know. I wish you fame and good fortunes on your future hunts :) Hope to see you again on one of my many other metal detecting videos. Gareth
Great intro to the amazing hobby of metal detecting! I just bought my first detector, just got it yesterday, Its not a high end brand, It is called the Hazlewolke 1030, picked it up New for $120 cdn, heading out this afternoon for my very first adventure. Like you said, " a metal detector is a metal detector, I will for sure use some of your tips and tricks! Cheers mate.
Absolutely fantastic and very informative video mate and so well executed as always.
Thanks mate, something I've been wanting to do for a while. I did my research, did my planning, wrote my scripts and noted topics to cover. A couple of folk mentioned I should of talked about gloves and a detector pinpoint feature which are fair comments. There's so many topics I could of mentioned to be fair, I was happy with the finished project and I look forward to seeing how well (or bad) over time it performs
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire it was really well done mate, you certainly have a way with filming and talking.
Absolutely love it mate.
Hi mate, thanks. I always wanted to make a tutorial video like this as I know its a video that should carry on getting views for as long as it remains on RUclips. As expected it performed poorly to start with, but the analytics show its gaining momentum now and starting to do well
Thanks for the helpful information!
Hello there, you are very welcome, it really pleases me to know that people out there find this video useful 😊 Thanks for taking the time to watch and I hope to see you again on one of my many other metal detecting videos. Gareth
Saw a random clip on insta of a guy finding stuff metal detecting and it really peaked my interest. Which brought me here wondering about the basics of such a hobby. Glad you were the video I decided on. Love you attitude and positivity!
Hi there, I really love this comment and love how you came over to RUclips and it was my channel you stumbled across. Did you search "How to metal detect?" Nice video and very useful. I have just started out and only really found lumps of farming equipment (iron). I have set the machine to avoid but keep getting good noises, dig it and find junk.
