One thing that should be noted is that the 333Mhz clock speed was already unlocked by Sony official firmware a few years after the release of the console, and some games were actually designed with this clock speed as a requirement; so some of the later games won't show any improvements because they were already pushing the chip to the max.
@@Andy-qk4bl If I recall correctly, God of War was the first title to require the full speed, and Sony packaged it with a required OS update in order to run it.
this was one of the main misconceptions about the PSP. 333Mhz was not overclocking, it was simply the highest clock speed the CPU had available. Sony selected 222Mhz as a sweet spot for performance and battery life, and was the default speed of the XMB and most games. only a few of the last games like Birth by Sleep started to run on 333mhz by default. the ease of how the CPU could adjust its clock frequency was one of the things i liked the most, there was a MP3 Player called LightMP3 that allowed you to set the freq to 20mhz and used the dedicated media decoder of the console to play mp3, it could stretch to almost 12 hours of music when the battery only lasted 3 on the default freq.
I'm looking at this video thinking 🤔 wow! That's some impressive work that you put in to modify that PSP and buying that printing machine is awesome. I went into a comic book store about 5 months ago and could not believe my luck, I got a mint condition 1001 original PSP and right next to it was s mint condition PSP Go and I just had to have it, long story short I got both and never looked back!
I wish you had found a circular wireless charging coil to match the metal circle on the back of the PSP instead of the rounded square one you used. Other than that minor aethetic wobble, great video and mod.
I know its ridiculous by today's standards, but I love the UMD drive. Things like them sounds. The fact that you have optical media in a handheld. The experience of opening the case of the game you want to play.
I remember an Indonesian person had a PSP with a broken UMD drive, so he just jailbreak it so that he can just put games into the memory stick instead of using the broken UMD drive. He was too poor to get games on UMDs. That was back around the late 2000s and around the 2010s. Don't know what happen to him now. I hope he stays out of trouble😅
I disagree. Opening/closing the UMD drive isn't satisfying at all imho and they're super slow. Loading games from the memory card at least doubles loading speeds and increases battery life on top. Also it's not the first/only optical disk in a handheld, not even the first from Sony.
Haha, I was thinking "at least with no UMD drive you have plenty of room for a huge battery" and almost immediately the Smasnug battery came out of the box. Love it.
I’d at least add a silver sticker on the back to replicate the silver ring you removed, it’s an iconic part of the PSP’s design and it looks wrong without it.
One of my friends has a phone case that has that little ring. I've asked him like 5 times despite knowing "dude that a psp? Nice! Oh it's your phone still."

Here is one thing about 3d printing that's rarely mentioned: All filaments shrink during cooldown some more some less depending on which filament you use so take it in consideration while you take measurements before you 3d print if you don't want to many missprints or parts that don't fit.
Maybe it's rarely mentioned because it's rarely relevant at all? I never took it into consideration and the only deviations I noticed were tolerances depending on layer thickness. If you want a perfect fit you need at least one simplified test print either way.
@SaHaRaSquad it should be relevant, materials when they're hot tend to spread and while they're colling down they shrink, that's something you learn in physics. I agree you need to make at least one test print but knowing how much will filament shrink after cooling down can help you sqve filament and reduce number of missprints.
@@raughboy188 If you're doing test prints it's completely irrelevant unless you test the fit before the part cooled down, and you wouldn't do that anyway due to potential warping. I've fitted printed parts to a point where
If you have your filaments tuned right they come out to the size you want every time without having to process this every time. Also most filaments do not really change size, silk PLA is one but it's easily overcome, if your parts don't fit you likely have your flow rate set too high. Also don't set esteps to get perfect extrusion, set your esteps so that when you extrude 100mm you actually extrude 100m, then tune filaments individually.
As a long time PSP and Vita modder, I would just like to say that it is not "overclocking", it is "max clocking" - within the hardware profiles Sony designed for the PSP hardware from the get go, but encouraged developers to leave alone whenever possible to maximize battery life and keep its portable gaming design. The slight exception to this is the 500mhz unlocked profile Vita hackers found late in the game above the original 444Mhz max clock - still within the original silicon spec, but not a developer accessible performance profile. The performance profiles available to developers was increased over time; Ready At Dawn famously had asked Sony to unlock the max clock 333Mhz mode for them during God of War COO's development.

I know a lot of people dont like the look of hot glue and others don't like it because it makes it hard to work on later because of removal. For the hard to work on bit, a dab of alcohol on the hot glue makes it pop off right away with almost no effort, many don't know this and its been a life saver for a lot of my projects.
Agreed, I have the same one and it doesn't work with both sd cards, only the one port works for me, maybe has bent pins. Technically it is useful for just holding a second card and swapping them.
@@TheKevixXD I have 2 128's, The side port works fine with the 128, But If I take that same card and move it to the port on the end it just sits forever trying to read it.
Careful with the PetG-HF, it seems that the properties are almost identical to PLA. Not that it matters in this project but it is 'high flow' because of the shorter molecule strands (higher viscosity). But this also lowers the melting point, heat resistance and strength making it basically PLA but more poinenous and less eco friendly.
i had a ps vita (i know, i know) as a kid and me, my sister, and our neighbors filmed our own tv show episodes on it. With an intro and all. I filmed us moving to another part of the state also. I brought it everywhere. One of my favorite games of all time was on it. It was Tearaway. It is so nostolgic to me. I had borderlands 2 on it and brought it to my sisters basketball game when a little kid (younger than i was at the time, which was like 8) just straight up took it from my hands and started to play. I asked his mom for my vita back and she said "he's using it right now" i was too dumbfounded to get it back until the end of the game. I got it back. Long story short, i ended up just losing my vita somewhere and never saw it again. Now those videos only live as memories. I would love to have one now, even having a switch lite and a steamdeck.
You may need to rechuck bits on the drill a couple times to get them centric, as it looks like you had eccentric wobble. Fortunately, plastic is very forgiving. In the future, though, I'd suggest loosening and tightening the chuck so that when the drill is spinning you see the bit in one place rather than off-center.
One thing though. The dual SD to memory stick cards aren't good they have a lot of problems. the single SD to memory stick are better and more reliable. Also you can charge the psp with the top USB port (it's not usb-c but still more convinient than the original charger)
yeah, its a very weird situation with the sd cards and adapters. not all adapters are the same (even similar looking ones, theres a lot of fake ones) , some let you use bigger capacity sd cards. and some sd cards won't even work. out of the sd cards i have i only managed to get a 64gb one working, nothing higher. but i've heard people have gone up to 256gb
@Xiefux Yeah I got lucky with my adaptor also being able to support up to 256GB but I use 64GB card since it's faster and I don't have that many PSP games I really want to play.

The best PSP is an emulation handheld or console in 2024 if we are going to be totally honest. Applaud the effort though as it looks like a love letter to keep the format alive.

Hey Zack! Quick 3D printing tip! When printing translucent PETG, print as slow as possible (30 mm/s or even slower) and use as few walls as possible, and no infill. That'll give you literally crystal clear print! P.S. fantastic video!
Excellent outcome! I really recommend it! I completed a similar project with a gameboy back in 2020, but I also secretly added LEDs to make the translucent casing light.
Kinda surprised everyone, including me has been on a psp modding phase lately and I'm loving it. Zac you're the first one ive seen add a huge battery. What about bluetooth audio? Great vid and mod either way.
Fun fact. I received the PSPE1000 as a gift over 10 years ago. I lost the charging cable and thought the PSP was broken until my brother bought a charging cable a years ago. I charged it and it worked. It has been sitting in my wardrobe for like 19 years without using it. The advantage is that it's in very good condition!
This brings me back. I was waiting months for the North American release. couldn't get one from the first shipment to my area, but I got one from the second. I thought I was living in the future. Everything was so cool from the the UI to the sort of console-levels of performance. It was so premium compared to virtually any phone on the market, which is not really the case with handhelds these days. It also was the first foray into unsupervised internet for millions of 11 year old boys.
First RUclips video I’ve watched fully through in a long time. I can’t wait until I can spend time and gain knowledge to attempt projects like this. I miss my psp. Great vid!
Great build Zac! ...regarding your info on the wire size ...have a look into some Teflon insulated wire in the gauges that you use. The Teflon Insulated wires that I have used are thinner than most other insulation, so you will save some real estate without te current carrying capability of thicker gauge wires.
i just found your channel yesterday and this is actually pretty cool. i have very fond memories of the psp mainly because it's my first handheld that i had. i loved the thing, playing Brunswick Pro Bowling and watching the movie Open Season on the thing lol. might have to mod one just for the lols
The PSP was my absolute favorite handheld system, and one of the last ones I need for my collection. I will now be digging through ebay listings this week thanks to you 🤣
so Zac one thing I noticed is that your speakers are completely straight at 5:26, for the best audio experience using speakers, ideally you would put the speakers towards your head to get the whole range of sound properly instead of it being cast to the sides, hence why very often studio speakers come with stands and ideally be on ear level from sitting standpoint.
totally snagging several of these ideas for my psp 1000! this is excellent! had this thing for ages, runs awesome, but the crap screen and battery life are my big issues
I think you should make your own wireless charger coil. Mave it round and use it as the ring around the PSP logo instead of just removing it and only having a oval shaped coil it looked a bit of a hack job where a copper round coil replacing the ring would have been way better looking.. overall it was a cool build though and the coil is my only issue with this build.
As someone who has experience in repair of microelectronics including micro soldering and battery welding, I want a note a warning to anybody who tries to do this; when you cut the BMS off, cut one tab at a time. If you try to cut both of them, you will fry the BMS and you will probably scare the shit out of yourself as you will be bridging negative and positive lines from a battery. I would also like to say to the Creator, you should have folded the Samsung BMS back into place and covered with kapton tape. Not doing so increases the likelihood that the tabs will separate from the BMS due to vibration or any of that.
Although Nintendo had the better titles for my childhood. PSP always felt better to hold. I had the Crisis Core Special Edition PSP and it loooked so sick!

Thank you! Glad you liked it :)
Excellent result - I did a similar project with a gameboy back in 2020, but I also snuck in some LED's to make the transparent case glow - definitely reccomend it!
I know a lot of people dont like the look of hot glue and others don't like it because it makes it hard to work on later because of removal. For the hard to work on bit, a dab of alcohol on the hot glue makes it pop off right away with almost no effort, many don't know this and its been a life saver for a lot of my projects.
Good tip!
That dual micro-SD memory slot adapter is trash, the single card versions are a lot better
Agreed, I have the same one and it doesn't work with both sd cards, only the one port works for me, maybe has bent pins. Technically it is useful for just holding a second card and swapping them.
Depends on the amount, 2 64gb should work fine, 2 128gb not at all, at that point is not the firmware but hardware (probably)
I do love your videos though, very slick designs and mods and perfectly captured in a video! Hats off
i had a ps vita (i know, i know) as a kid and me, my sister, and our neighbors filmed our own tv show episodes on it. I would love to have one now, even having a switch lite and a steamdeck.
holy cow. I hope you find it again. Also that mom ...
This guy is the definition of problem solving. Amazing work!
1:52 Don't blame the engineers for what was decided above their pay-grades.
Zac, if you think that’s rough to disassemble, I can’t wait for the “I built a modern New Nintendo 2DS XL” video
Oh boy....
Zac u should try the ps vita thmbstick cap mod for the psp it greatly helps compared to the stock cap since u gave a psp 1k it just pulls off.😊
Hey Zac. Great build. I would blur out the Nintendo stuff so the ninjas don't get you. They are a serious rampage right now. Keep up the great builds
I love that you didn’t compromise and followed your gut when you felt it could be even better. When spending so much time on a project it deserves that extra attention to detail! Fun watch
A modernized Wii would be cool
I have one on my shelf now. Definitely in the works.
These are definitely my favourite videos of yours, Zak! Always amazing to see how you go about modernizing older consoles :) Fantastic work as always! Can't wait to see what console you do next.
6:05 Zac, this can get you in problem with the ninjas
I understand this comment and I'm proud
I adore that when you thought something could be even better, you followed your instincts and didn't compromise. A project merits more attention to detail after so much time has been invested in it! Enjoyable to watch
0:53 The irony of spelling "oops" like "opps".
I have a 3D file for printing a direct fit USB C port where the old DC charger goes. It looks factory too!
19:55 Ugggg! Everything was great up to the part where you used Hot Glue! I think I cried a little seeing you squeeze that nasty goo into what was shaping up to be a beautiful build.
Dude didn't want to deal with resin epoxy or any transparent adhesive.

agree. with cables that short there is no way for them to rattle either
Black hot glue looks good tho. Fite me
@@busteraycan mmh, lol. if it's properly molded, sure, why not. But if it's just a blob...
I'm eagerly awaiting the "I built a modern New Nintendo 2DS XL" video, Zac, if you think that would be difficult to disassemble.
I have always loved my psp's! I love modding them, but I think you did the best job ever!
All the best from Holland!
Damn thank you! Much appreciated :)
The ring around the psp logo on the back would be perfect for Qi2 or Magsafe charging, though
I really love the phone battery hack you did. you saved a phone battery and a landfill psp motherboard and parts and man, that is a hell of a psp, I really love it from the thought process to the execusion. If I were to do this project the only thing I would change would be the case, a traslucent purple would be my thing. But beside that this PSP is a marvel of modding and a good way to learn stuff (even soldering, it doesn't look like a particular difficult thing for someone who did this at least a few times before) Top notch man.
You forgot to link the existing USB on top to the USB C data. You may also want to add BT mod for the headphone/mic/remote port
I just noticed that you and I made the same comment.
sony : make ps portal remote play ps5 that it
zac : fine i doing my self
This was my childhood! So excited to see this!!!
Absolutely freakin amazing... My PSP is still in top shape. Id LOVE ta have this mod, without the wireless charging, and a red/blue case like PS4 Spiderman :D
What’s the screen on the side of your bedside table? 15:25
Probably some laptop
Or ipad
PSPs went triple platinum in the hood lol everyone wanted to play midnight club, the music features and being able to watch movies was amazing
1:23 chonky battery
Hey, that battery mod is exactly what I've done to my device too! It's worth it and I'm so glad you're showing this. Don't throw away your dummy batteries if you know what you're doing! That PCB inside is useful! I just used the original pcb to connect directly to the battery prongs tho.
6:16 "K"
K
Haha that should be on sceren text that reads 333mhz, not sure how it ended up as "K"
Zac, I started with the DIY electric longboard and I really love the direction you’ve taken your channel. Keep up the great content!
The best PSP is an emulation handheld or console in 2024 if we are going to be totally honest. Applaud the effort though as it looks like a love letter to keep the format alive.
Really cool build, it makes me want to start looking for a second hand PSP, hahah. I hope you consider doing the PS Vita next, I have my original model laying around collecting dust. The battery swap is amazing, huge improvements!
Definitely adding the Vita to my list of upcoming projects!
I wish sony hadn't discontinued the Hand held consoles they were so cool and innovative
Sony Portal =^) /s
This PSP has the most mods I've ever seen! Nice work on all the soldering!
Please stop saying you build game consoles. You mod consoles, you don’t build them.
somthing about your tone and delivery sounds like doug demuro
Dual micro SD cards for the PSP
is the worst thing ever made especially the one you bought
rip
why tho
That's easy to replace. Not RIP - just get a single Micro SD adapter.
I love everything about this, thank you! My inner child is losing it's mind.
Great vid!
That was very creative and informative, thank you for the knowledge you shared with us.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Love this! (also love that you're sponsored by such a great company this time!)
Back in my days I had to make a pandora battery to put a custom firmware on it. These were great days!
Great build Zac! ...regarding your info on the wire size ...have a look into some Teflon insulated wire in the gauges that you use. The Teflon Insulated wires that I have used are thinner than most other insulation, so you will save some real estate without te current carrying capability of thicker gauge wires.
Great call! I've got a video coming out next week where I used some enamel coated wires and that worked really well too.
i just found your channel yesterday and this is actually pretty cool. i have very fond memories of the psp mainly because it's my first handheld that i had. i loved the thing, playing Brunswick Pro Bowling and watching the movie Open Season on the thing lol. might have to mod one just for the lols
Damn, this is top tier content. One of the best videos of modding i've seen. So much intricate detail, love the video bro!
The PSP was my absolute favorite handheld system, and one of the last ones I need for my collection. I will now be digging through ebay listings this week thanks to you 🤣
Really I had no idea, we'll talk about it on the show tonight.
so Zac one thing I noticed is that your speakers are completely straight at 5:26, for the best audio experience using speakers, ideally you would put the speakers towards your head to get the whole range of sound properly instead of it being cast to the sides, hence why very often studio speakers come with stands and ideally be on ear level from sitting standpoint.
totally snagging several of these ideas for my psp 1000! this is excellent! had this thing for ages, runs awesome, but the crap screen and battery life are my big issues
what a cool video! the psp was something i always wanted as a kid.
I kinda like the old display more, because of the retrotivity, you have those lines there and stuff. I love this video though, good work!
need to post more videos Zac love your content. Greetings from Australia. You should've done a NvME mod
I'm trying! These videos take a long time to make.
first time i see one of your videos, congratulations you're not only interesting but also inspiring
Or buy a Steam Deck or Odin/Retroid and play PSP games using PPSSPP. PPSSPP is a super mature emulator.
or just a mobile controller, should run perfectly fine on most phones.
Very glad to see this on my feed this afternoon! Keep up the work !
I love these videos. I can live vicariously through you since I'm broke and can't do any of this myself anymore.
I didn´t think this would be such an amazing upgrade. The battery, memory stick, transparent case, screen, wireless charging 🤯
Dope! Your skill set is out of this world.
You videos are absolutely great man! Keep up the great work!
Although Nintendo had the better titles for my childhood. PSP always felt better to hold. I had the Crisis Core Special Edition PSP and it loooked so sick!
In my experience, hot and slow printing is the best way to get translucent filament to appear more transparent.
Thumbs up for using a worn and damaged PSP instead of ruining a perfectly good one.
Thanks for this great video, it was fun to watch.
My pleasure thanks for watching!
Love your vids you brought me to the world of moding and homebrew
That is so cool. Very well done!
excellent vid. they make a glass screen cover too. hopefully the 2k 3k get more mods soon. led screen and better speakers. the psp got me into modding.
