I recently got a permission where the farmer HATES detectorists and group digs. Big trust issues. but my number was passed to him by one of my farmers after he lost a part on one of this machines. 2 unsuccessful recovery missions led to trust build up and he mapped out his entire farm 😃. he's not interested in tje finds unless it's gold etc but his wife is and gave me some more additional information about the farm. 👍
Brilliant result Jason. It's the trust part that people find difficult, but you are a very honest detectorist. Your landowner must have a lot of respect for you passing your number like that 👍 Good on you Maria 🍀
Hi mate, yeah that's another great way of getting a permission - by finding something lost, then re-unite it with the owner. That's a permission for life with a result like that. Thanks so much for the channel visit, and maybe see you at Detectival or RCM
The William and Mary with the hole was used as a washer. They just bang a square nail or a centre punch through it and saves a trip to the ironmonger. If it was shot it would have and entry concave and an exit, convex. Yours has a ridge around the holes on both sides. My best find at Detectival was a Vickie Penny in similar condition. Good finds and great video tips. I went on a door knock a few weeks ago and although they didn't know who owned the derelict house 100 yard up the road, however I had a can of my favourite beer in my back pocket with my metal detecting business card under the ring pull. We will see, the house I knocked was a rental. I subscribed 😀
The William & Mary with the hole in it would have had a piece of copper in the hole which is what gave the coin its value. Or something like that, I Googled it. Basically they were copper to begin with, but the value of the copper was worth more than a Farthing, hence why they changed them to tin. Beer with a business card is a great idea. I keep meaning to get some business cards whipped up, but never get round to it. Thanks for watching and for your great feedback. Oh and thanks so much for subscribing, hope to see you on some of my 300 other metal detecting videos. Gareth
Hi Michael, thanks as always for tuning in. Yeah I thought this field was going to be good. Unfortunately it is tiny and with a couple of visits I have pretty much emptied it. Had some more really nice finds from here though, coming soon!!
Some nice condition finds there Gareth and I am sure your tips will help new comers.Getting land here in the midlands is more and more difficult due to the encroachment of pay to detect groups mopping up land.
Hi Dave, it sure is getting harder to get permission, but with the hobby gaining in popularity, its only gonna get harder and harder. If I'd planned this video better I'd of mentioned a couple other things. In fact I did zero planning, I turned up and decided to make a video all about getting metal detecting permission. Thanks as always for watching
Another thing I do is bring some examples of your local finds first time you door knock, I have some nice shoe buckles in a display, nice old KG's, Spanish coins, early American coins and relics. Adding this step in has really boosted my success obtaining permissions. Donating some nice finds to the landowner goes a long way to opening other doors, People talk.
Hi mate, yes, that is something I have done before, as sometimes, some landowners are quite interested in seeing what can be found. However, I find that most landowners are simply not interested, unless they are going to make any money out of it - which is probably the only reason why any of them ever let anyone detect their land haha. Thanks so much for watching and for your comments, much appreciated
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire Landowners here are generally fascinated by colonial coins and relics I dig up. And after getting a great permission, don't forget buying a case of the landowner's favorite beer 🤓 If I find a rare coin, I will case it and donate it to them, opens up a lot of neighboring properties as people talk. I have had many landowners contact me over the years ............ maybe they just want a case of beer!! Keep cranking out those vids bud, enjoyable all around.
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire I'm of the age where I have donated my life's metal detecting finds to local historical societies and Anthems. When I was a younger man, I could not have dreamed of doing that. Now I think it's more important folks get to see the rare history, than me to keep it tucked away. I retired well, but I know lots of people are compelled to sell their finds to finance the hobby. Plus, it keeps me hungry to keep swinging for the next old find! BTW, William and Mary is about the oldest coin I've found in the new world! Not much older in the ground over here.
@@jaystrongbow6111 ah OK that makes sense, after all we cannot take it with us. Eventually I will sell anything of any value and give away / throw away the rest. I got so many metal detecting finds that its overwhelming
Thanks for the video. Some nice coins there. I hope to finally get on my permission this year. The land owner is a friend of my mom's from church. Every time I'm back home visiting my mom, I'm not allowed on the land because it's being used by sheep. 🐑🐑
Hi mate, that is interesting they do not let you on while the sheep are there. I've never known a landowner do that. The sheep are the kind fellows who keep the grass nice and short :)
Thanks very much for visiting my channel and watching this video. I hope you found it useful and I hope to see you on my channel again soon. Good luck banking ya permission. Gareth
Another top vid, well done, and good to see you back on the silver at last! You mentioned the pub at the end - defo, I've secured a number of permissions by talking to people in my local pubs, not necessarily from the farmer, but someone you talk to who who likes you and says you need to speak to my brother / uncle / Dad / son etc . Which leads me on to another top tip - ask your mates or colleagues if they know any landowners. If they put in a word for you, that proves you're trustworthy, which is half the battle. And if you don't ask, you don't get. I love the ones where you have all your long spiel prepared for a farmer who doesn't know you from Adam, and they give you the yes before you even have the chance to explain why they should give you permission!
Hi mate, love this comment, you are bang on with your comments - ask anyone and everyone, friends, family, old school teachers, people always know people with land. And if you don't ask you don't get, bang on the money!! Some people are terrified and some people can't be bothered. If you want something in life you have to get it yourself and work hard. Thanks for watching and hope to see you on my channel again. Gareth PS - sorry for the slow reply, takes me many weeks to reply to every comment :)
Hey Martin, how are you doing? Not heard from you in a while, hope all is OK? The ladies and I had an amazing couple of weeks in Canada. I'll ping you an email with some pictures and our route. Gareth
Hello, thanks for the kind words. Well milled (post 1800s) silver coins get soaked in lemon juice. Copper coins usually just brushed under a cold tap. Some of which (with nice smooth green or brown patina) I will wax with Renaissance Wax. Hope this helps :)
Absolutely awesome video. So many beginners need the information on how to get permission. I am sure many detectorists are slightly introverted like me, and it is difficult to open up that conversation.
Hi mate, thanks so much for your kind words and also for visiting my channel & watching this video. I understand that it can be terrifying for some people, but sometimes you just gotta roll ya sleeves up and do it. It terrifies me also by the way, but I love metal detecting so getting permissions is an integral part of the hobby
Great advice Gareth I’ve. Been lucky as I’m an a electrician and this opens doors in my area there are a lot of group digs not for me as lucky to have some great places to go and always looking for the next keep them coming 👍Shaune in Kent
I appreciate your informative videos. Great content and an inspiration to watch. Enjoy your fines and your attitude towards the hobby. I live in Glendale, Oregon USA. I’m traveling to London, the bath area for two weeks and possibly will be seeing some of the Countryside that you seem to be hunting. I wish I was bringing my metal detector with me. Equinox 800 but will have to enjoy it just the sites. Thank you for your enthusiasm towards this hobby. Love what you do.
Hi, thanks very much for your very kind words, I appreciate that. When are you travelling to London? I just got back from a 2 week holiday touring the Canadian Rockies - an incredible trip! The Minelab Equinox range are very good detectors. I've never actually owned a Minelab, always been with Garrett or XP machines. Thanks again for your comment, apologies for the slow reply. Gareth
Well done Gareth. Good advice. Cracking finds. I said to Viv that if you pull out a Vicky bun head penny in really good condition I guarantee it would be 1862. May your new permission give you many great finds. Take care mate 🦘🦘😁👍
Hi mate, that is awesome to know you had successfully predicted my find! I am still here by the way hangin on to a thread of my channel. I actually went metal detecting last night for first time in ages. I climbed over the gate to the field and landed awkwardly and have damaged a knee ligament. I then went home for my tea - pie n chips, and broke a tooth! The hobby is well & truly against me right now haha!!
Congratulations on the William and Mary coin, a rare find and one that is on our wish list. And 2 lovely silvers, well done Gareth. All the best Wendy and Jon
Hi guys, yeah proper rare coin to find that is. Shame about the condition, considering everything else I find in this field is in amazing condition. Thanks for the channel visit
Great day Gareth! It’s easier to look up property owner in America but the properties aren’t near as good as where you are. Love the silver coins they always make your day. Face to face is mandatory in my book too… John
Hi John, finding landowners can be tricky here, as people seems to own land here there and everywhere. I totally agree, I will only ever ask face to face where possible. People need to see and meet you before they can even begin to think about trusting you. Thanks as always for your support
Helloo, thanks as always for your kind words. Apologies for the slow reply, life is super busy at the moment and affecting my RUclips channel and my uploads
Spot on there Gareth! And thanks for the great tips on getting those permissions! Those were some beauties that you pulled out of that lush soil! Mike in sunny Florida
Hey there Mike, as always thanks so much for coming along and checking in. I hope the weather is sunny and warm over your way. Summer is in full swing here in the UK, will soon be winter time again - my favourite time for metal detecting
Great video Gareth I'm off to meet a new farmer on Saturday and yes I will be taking him a bottle...luckily the permission is nailed on but I will be as always extremely friendly and respectful to him and his land.....👍
Hi mate, a bottle of the good stuff always helps as a sweetener. I gave a landowner a crate of beer recently, but then I never heard from him again. He took my beer and ran haha. Fair play to him !!
Hi James, I know mate, condition of most things from this field is incredible. I have since done 2 more visits and found a lot more cool stuff including some more silvers! So look out! Just struggling for time in the studio at the moment having taken almost a month off from the hobby and my RUclips channel. Sometimes it gets too much trying to hit deadlines of weekly uploads. They will be a thing of the past on my channel now as I try to concentrate on uploading quality over quantity :)
Excellent video, as always. Some really good tips , we all want more permissions 😊 Some amazing finds there too. Well done on the william and Mary mate, and the George 4th... im yet to find a George 4th coin.. Well done.. 😀😀
Hi mate, apologies for the slow reply, same old excuses, but am still here and still plodding along with the channel. Hope to have a new upload in the next few days. This field is a brilliant little field. Thanks as always for tuning in
Promising piece of land by the looks of the finds already up, and a bucket lister for you. Great info for beginners and people wondering how to secure their first permission, or expand the land they detect. Hope you have many more great finds there, I will be following your progress much with interest as usual bud. All the best and HH. P.s...Great buckle.
Hi mate, yeah this field is awesome, but its literally tiny, couple more visits have produced more amazing finds and silver! Struggling to upload at the minute, life is getting in the way of my channel. Lots and lots of content coming though
Hi mate, thanks so much for the kind words and also for your endless support. Its comments like this and people like you that keep me holding on to my channel. The detecting, the editing, the work involved has become too much for me at the moment due to work, family, summer and everything else getting in the way. Uploads are few n far between and think about giving it up. But am still here haha
Hi there, thanks very much for watching. yes most of my permissions are very scenic, as these are the places I love spending my time and these are the places I know I can find lots of coins :)
Another tip for you……don’t talk with your mouth full 😂😂 some good advice there pal, and enjoyable as ever. Lovely coins there mate. Great to see you at the weekend!! Good times
Haha, I'm rough n ready, a true wilderness beast, its what I do! This video was over 13GB in size and took less than 40 minutes to upload on my new internet. This would have taken 12+ hours during an over night upload, and 9 times out of 10 would have frozen and I'd have to start again. Life is good for the Duke. Was great to have you over at the weekend, you are welcome any time x
Hi , back on the silver mate nice coin to and in good condition shame the G4 was in poor condition but a silver coin none the less , you had quite a good day and as for getting permissions knocking on the door being friendly and honest is always my method if they like you then it's usually a yes , top video again with good info best wishes and ATB 👌

Hi mate, wow that is quite a comment to read considering I have uploaded 300 or so videos on my channel. It pleases me to hear this. But it is clear to me that my best video is my Beginners Guide To Metal Detecting - that video has just surpassed 275,000 views, has earnt me 4,000 subscribers and £1,600 in revenue - all from a single video. If all my videos performed like that, I could quit my day job!!
Hi Gareth, Another fantastic and informative video. I have a few questions about talking to the land owner. Do you make out a written and signed by both parties agreement about the finds and value of finds? Do you say if a item is valued over a certain amount IE- £200 or £300 then it is sold and split 50/50? Plus I have my NCMD membership which gives up to £10M public liability insurance. Would I mention that to land owner? Plus should I also mention about the PAS and FLO or do you think I would be bombarding the land owner with to much information? Also do you knock on land owners property before you go detecting every time once permission is given? Sorry to bombard you with so many questions, Its just I want as much information as I can get before I go calling and bothering them, as I know they are very busy. Thanks for all your brilliant videos.
Hi Brian, as always thanks for visiting my channel and watching my content. In 10 years I have never had a written contract or anything like that. Most landowners aren't even interested in my finds. Only once have I ever had to pay off a landowner for me to keep a gold coin I found. I do not have NCMD membership as its a waste of time, so never mention that either. Last thing you wanna do is pepper them with comments, might scare them away. Just get in there, sweet talk them, get the yes, then crack on. I usually take their phone number and give them a call or a text in advance to let them know. Couple places I just turn up and crack on. All landowners are different so you just got to adapt to each and try to keep them as happy as possible. Hope this helps
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire Brilliant Gareth. Thank you for the reply. I am going on a rally dig shortly where the Huxley Hoard was found. I will have a 160 acres of land to detect. Hi there, getting permissions through friends, friends of friends, colleagues, their relatives etc is brilliant isn't it. Nothing quite like been handed a permission on a plate :) Thanks so much for watching
Helloo, as always thanks for tuning in and watching this one. Finding the time to dedicate to my channel has been really difficult in recent months, but I am still here :)
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire You're welcome as always! I'm sure it can't be easy, but family time has to come first. Everyone should understand that, you have a life outside RUclips x
Hi mate, thanks for the channel visit, much appreciated. Everyone has their own preferred methods, this is just what works best for me. I've been metal detecting for 10 years now, and yes it is definitely getting harder and harder to get permissions. Good luck mate
Hi mate, and as always thank you so much for visiting my channel and watching everything that I upload. I've taken some much needed time off my channel, but hoping to get back in the saddle soon with a new upload this week :)
Hi Gareth, lovely silver 😊 and a great video 📹 I'm one of the nerves types, I've asked a few farmers face to face but have yet to get a yes. They have all had Detectorists before and say there's nothing to find. I must try Google earth and look further. Very inspiring video ❤
Hi Stephen, 10 years ago I used to be the same, nervous, awkward, zero confidence. I was the same in job interviews. But since I started detecting and asking more and more landowners, plus having job interviews at work I gained more and more confidence. Unfortunately it doesn't come naturally to most, but if you work on it and practice, anyone can do it. If I can do it, so can you. I promise. Gave you a speedy reply on this one mate while I sit on my front door step recovering from my morning run. Have a good bank holiday
Now then Gary, how are you doing mate? I've been very quiet in the metal detecting world recently. I took 3 weeks off and have very little motivation or enthusiasm for the hobby or my channel. But I am creeping back into it slowly but surely. I hope to upload a new video this week (finally). Thanks for sticking with the channel. G
Excellent video Gareth and some very good tips for people, if only it was that easy now for us to get permissions, it is a completely different proposition now I am disabled and there is so much more to consider even before asking for permission, how hilly and is it safe, what would the access be and are any gates chained and locked and a host of other important considerations, then you have the landowners reaction to a disabled person in a powerchair knocking on their door, and how we have to try and convince them that it isn't a massive risk for them having me on their land in case something was to happen. They also have no idea of my powerchairs capabilities or my bodies ability to deal with off road conditions. Oh it was so easy when I was able to do exactly what you describe in your video, but everything in life is against disabled people I have found out and the only way to deal with things that may stand in your way is to be determined and overcome them if possible. Love this video, it is one of your best and very helpful for people that are struggling. All the best from Wendy and Jon.
I can appreciate the extra struggles you guys face, but it looks like you do very well as your always out metal detecting and always finding amazing stuff. I've had several weeks away from the hobby, been on holiday and come back with a real lack of interest for metal detecting or my channel. Hoping after a couple of weeks I'll get back into it again. Was spending so much time editing stuff for such little amounts of views, starting to not see the point of my channel anymore
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire You sound like you have the post holiday blues and you will have to wait until your detecting mojo returns again. Just be thankful that you have a successful youtube channel and earn some money from it and you are sponsored by Regtons and they have helped you to have a top of the range detector, that you may never have owned without them, and remember you already have all these things and other youtubers can only dream of a day when or if they can say the same. @@disabledadventures4115 thanks for the kind words, I would never describe my channel as successful. I only have those things as I worked really hard on my channel for 5 years. But all things come to an end eventually. Surely there comes a time when you say enough is enough. If I didn't have to go to work all week and I didn't have so many commitments, then I'd happily dedicate more time to it and be more enthusiastic. But the older I get, the more precious time becomes, I feel guilty wasting it away in a field on my own all day. Definitely got holiday blues, probably just need more time to get back into the swing of my regimental life
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire You are right, and my passions when younger were metal detecting and motorcycles, my first detector at 9 and my first motorcycle at 11, but over the years with having 3 children I have had to put both passions on hold several times for a few years, I have always kept a detector and always kept a bike but the selfishness of both pastimes made it obvious to me that other things in life were more important and had to come first. I always went back to detecting and bikes until I was disabled 3 1/2 years ago and now the choice has been taken away from me with the bikes because of sudden disability, but as luck would have it and with a huge amount of help from my long suffering wife Wendy I have managed to participate in detecting again. You may also do the same, you have to do what is right at the time, but you will probably keep coming back to detecting. All the best Wendy and Jon

This is a very helpful video, thank you. It's good to see how different people go about seeking permissions. I have a small permission with good history, but I'm looking to gain some more land to detect. I'm a hairy biker though, and I ride an old motorbike, so vthe idea of me going anywhere in a shirt and tie would look strange with leathers and bike boots. But I'm a very friendly, very respectful, I worked on farms when i was younger, albeit many moons ago, and rep'd to farmers for an agricultural company. So if i can get as far as the interview stage, I'll be quietly confident. I figure to try and use the hairy biker look to my advantage, as that's how i look ... 'The Hairy Biker Detectorist' ...... It did work for those two hairy biker chefs in that tv show 😊 Wish me luck 🤞😂
Hi there, thanks for the channel visit, for watching this video and for your feedback. Anyone (no matter their look) can get a permission with the right approach, and I'm sure you will do just fine. It works best on coins and artefacts with a nice smooth patina - you know like an old Queen Victoria penny when they are green and smooth. But if something valuable comes up I always like to tell and show them. Only once has a landowner wanted an item I found. I had to pay him 50% of the value to keep it. It was a gold Half Guinea, the video to that unbelievable find can be seen here: ruclips.net/video/tc4ZKIx4hPs/видео.htmlsi=li0CURdv2WmBhpVk Thanks again and I hope to see you on my channel again.
Well we are all humans and all look different, there is always an avenue you can take one way or other. I know some detectorists who are tradesmen and offer free electrical work, plumbing, building etc
Thank you so much for visiting my channel and for watching this video, I appreciate it so much :)

Your landowner must have a lot of respect for you passing your number like that 👍
Good on you
Maria 🍀
Hi mate, yeah that's another great way of getting a permission - by finding something lost, then re-unite it with the owner. That's a permission for life with a result like that. Thanks so much for the channel visit, and maybe see you at Detectival or RCM
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire I'm at both 😁👍

Can u detect in that land
Gareth
Great finds again Gareth. I believe the buckle is Georgian, as I have a similar one. That field will be a treasure chest full of coins etc.
@@jaystrongbow6111 yes a case of beer always helps 😆 I would never ever donate a rare coin though 🤣
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire I really don't know. It may be that the land is rented out to another farmer to put their sheep on?

Another great video! Would love to see a video of how you go about cleaning your coins. You hear so much conflicting info 😅

It did work for those two hairy biker chefs in that tv show 😊

Hi there, thanks so much for visiting my channel and for taking time out of your day to watch this video, I really appreciate it. I work really hard on my channel and the content I upload, it makes me very happy to see people are watching and leaving me comments. It inspires me to continue doing what I do. If you haven’t already, then I would recommend you watch this video next which shows 2 of my best ever gold finds found on consecutive weekends on the same field:

Hi mate, apologies for the slow reply. haha yes I've been doing a LOT of running in the last few months trying to shift a bit of timber. Its partly why I haven't been uploading much as I get home from work, go running, food, shower then bed. No time for metal detecting or editing at the moment. Hope you are doin OK? England in the Euros final, discuss?

Hi mate, thank you so much for the kind words. Metal detecting video guides is something that I've dabbled in before. After the success of my Beginners Guide video, I thought I'd put together a video dedicated to getting metal detecting permissions. My next one will be my metal detecting kit list. I love coming up with new ideas and bringing new stuff to the channel. I've got so much content coming and have some really nice finds in recent weeks. But it takes me huge amounts of time to edit these videos. Thanks again for your support. G
Hi Gareth. Is everything OK my friend? Not seen any new videos from you for a while. Hope your well?
Hi mate, I'm all good thank you, I have taken 3 weeks away from metal detecting and my channel. Spent 2 of those weeks in Canada on a family holiday. Had an amazing time! Back to the grind now and trying to regather my rhythem. Thank you for checking in. I should probably something to let people know. Cheers mate
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire Happy days mate. Glad all is well. Hope you had a fantastic holiday with the family? It is good to take time out and relax. All the best mate.👍👍👍👍
@@brianrutherford7385 yes it was a proper dream holiday exploring the Canadian Rockies. Need to get back in fields to find some pound coins to pay for it 🤣🤣

Hi there, thanks so much for visiting my channel, really appreciate you coming along. I created a Beginners Guide To Metal Detecting video which will answer a lot of your questions and queries. You can find that video here if you wish to see:

A good beginners machine would be a Minelab Vanquish or a Nokta Score. Great machines and good price.
I hope this helps and hope to see you again on my channel on some of my 300 other metal detecting videos
Hi Gareth, what do you use to wax the coins?... I haven't done this in the past but might give it a go for some of the better copper artefacts
Hi mate, I use something called Renaissance Wax. I bought mine from Amazon, had the same small tub for many years, seems to never run out! It works best on coins and artefacts with a nice smooth patina - you know like an old Queen Victoria penny when they are green and smooth. If the patina is gone and the artefact or coin is very rough, I'd use something called Arteseal. Below is a link to Renaissance Wax, if you buy it through this link, I'll earn 10% commission :)

I hope this helps. Gareth
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire Cheers mate - just ordered a tub through your link!

The Cotswold area of London
Ah the Cotswolds is a real beautiful area, I'd love to metal detect down that way
What is the arrangement with finds? Do you split any value 50/50?
Hi there, thanks so much for visiting my channel and for watching this video. Most of my landowners have no interest in what I find. But if something valuable comes up I always like to tell and show them. Only once has a landowner wanted an item I found. I had to pay him 50% of the value to keep it. It was a gold Half Guinea, the video to that unbelievable find can be seen here:

What harness are you using?
Hi there, what do you mean by harness? I do not use any kind of harness for metal detecting
If you look like me. Your not going to want to go face to face 😂
Well we are all humans and all look different, there is always an avenue you can take one way or other. I know some detectorists who are tradesmen and offer free electrical work, plumbing, building etc
