I live in a small town in Maine founded in the 18th century. I was able to go to the historical society online for my town and actually was amazed at the pics, maps of the streets and what was there. My own home is a victorian age home but i never knew alot of the buildings and areas until i did. Great advice!

Nice information. Thank you. It's amazing how few historic maps of our state of Colorado there are online. Search "Adams County" where I live and there's pretty much nothing. So weird. Yeah, I've been using Historic Aerials, but of course their timelines are limited. That said I've learned a lot of history about my neighborhood while researching for places to hunt. Another reason to love detecting! Keep up the good work. Best, Steve

It is hit or miss on some older areas. Those areas may not have been mapped very consistently which is the case that I have found. Sometimes research takes you to the library, county GIS websites, or scouring old books of the area. Sometimes that will help find a map that not many people know it exists.

You don't need Google or the Computer at all. Just go to your local library and find an old history book for the county you want to search. Study, then outline the leads you find in the early history of the whole county. Then let's get into the township histories at the last part of the book. This is where the best leads come from, Taverns, ghost towns, camp meetings, political meetings and picnics! I get atlas maps of all the counties I search on eBay.

When I approach land owners, I let them know that I will be taking all trash with me and am willing to show them all of my finds. I dont bring up giving them any finds that I uncover. If they discuss it, I usually tell them that they are entitled to the finds as it was found on their property. I rarely come across owners that want to keep anything that is found. I have though made some memory boxes of items that the owners really liked. That usually helps me get to come back and hunt more!

Just sneak in and trespass. I took my coil and controller completely off the pole. You put the controller inside your jack pocket and run the coil wire down your sleeve. Keep the coil in the outside jacket pocket where you can just take it and put it away quickly. Use a small 6 inch coil. If the cops come, take off running as fast as you can and hope he can't catch you. If he does catch you, immediately crap on yourself and he'll instantly decide it's not worth it.

I know when I tried to find these like 15 years ago the old Sanborn Maps were still a few item. I’m hoping you have a video or blog on how you approach the land owners. Do you have to offer to split any finds with them. Luckily I can start on the property I live on now.
