That's exactly what I did to learn back in my teens,, this was in 1964, my 6 yr older brother had a rig and he was not working it at the time, so we went out to the back 40 where they were laying a new 6" line,, std wall though,,, we pulled up to the site, took off his torch and wacked a full joint in half, threw it on the bed of the truck and tacked it down and took off to my dad's house, I was a jr in high school then.
He opened up his tool box and got a wrap around and soapstone and showed me how to put a line around the pipe, showed me how to cut and bevel the end at the same time.,,,, told me you'll either learn how to cut straight bevels or you'll have a hard time welding up the coupons,
Gave me a bunch of P5's (6010) and showed me the basics of welding putting beads in,, by the end of the summer I was welding pipe in the ship yard,,, lied about my age to them,,,, and retired about 5yrs ago at 70 yrs old. I'd still be working if it hadn't been for the cancer taking me out with the HR dept at work.
By the way, I watched you burn some 1/2" plate the other day on one of your video's and I have to say you are the only on u tube I've seen that really knows how to light and set a torch to the right heat to get the clean burn, most people I've seen through the years think you have to have a num 2 set at maxine to get the job done, totally opposite of the way it should be done.

I don’t know if you guys know how much you are helping with these videos but I’ll tell you they really help a lot.
I’m 66 and weld a little on pipe pens and implements and just for fun. If you would have told me when I was young that I liked welding I would have laughed.
I’ll never be a pipeliner but I like to do something to the best of my ability.
I’ve been watching several different welders videos for about three months and you can’t believe how much I improved.
Also the little tips about working really help. I’m glad you guys are sharing your knowledge.

I like your ground connection! I have used a chain clamp like that to support arm too and works great in awkward positions.
It sure does! I threw my grasshopper away along time ago. I’ve got a magnetic one that I use sometime when the inspectors around!
If inspector would be there you’d be runoff on most jobs for not grounding on a weld or in a future “weld zone” such as the end of the pipe on the bevel. Even when doing hydro pipe. I about got run off for doing the same thing on my first well pad job but the guy went east on me. Just wanted to throw this out there. If there are welders reading this comment they will know exactly where I’m coming from

I should of taken welding class back in 1999. I'm from South Texas where gas is pretty much depleted just small pockets left. I want to learn welding on pipes so gonna cut some 4 and 6 inch schedule 40 or 80. Well neat videos.

Your a good welder brother , I like your confidence and your attitude ... makes All the difference . I've always ran 5p /6010 uphill root , then lo/hi-7018 fill/cap but I am trying to move to 5p downhill all the way . Good video !

Once you start with in 5P downhill, you’ll never go back unless they make you
I have always worked structural and equipment maintenance, generally 7018 or dual shield. I find it surprising that you don’t worry about slag inclusions at your stops and restarts. As well, as far as I know 8018 is not common here in Canada, but I have been out of the industry for over 10 years now and never worked pipelines or mod yards so it might be a thing now.

We once machine TIG welded an overlay on a very large pipe, uphill on one side and downhill on the other. The UT was acceptable on the uphill side and was filled with lack of fusion on the downhill side. Lessons learned, what may work for some alloys and welding process may not work for all of them and the final inspection is what counts.

Tried the knee on the foot trick and just felt off balance I just simply wear a “promotion pad” on my right knee and can have a wider base and feel more solid. I like your trick tho it just makes my lard a$$ feel awkward haha but this is why everybody has there own different style what works with one may not with the other but it’s always worth a try! The willingness to try different things is where a lot of people have the mental block I do believe. Got a lot of “my way of the highway” mentalities out there especially in the ole welding game

I think one important thing to note about burning the rods is some inspectors might want to see the numbers at the end of the rod
How much you run your main dial when using your remote on that vantage. Great videos brother keep up the good work
Never. When you plug the remote in and switch it to remote the main dial is obsolete

I typically end up dropping a rod size and doing half moons on the bottom. Today I tried running 3/16” 6010 all the way and from dead mans curve to 6 o’clock the puddle kept chasing me and dripping. I was thinking on my ride home maybe I was too hot. Thoughts? 3/16, 6010, 130 amps

Yeah, for sure. Turn it down a little bit. Sometimes when you get started on the side, it's really hard to keep the puddle away from you. But for sure turn it down.
Ive been on jobs that would run you off for welding downhill.

@@TaylorWelding thanks. I just got a job at my local refinery as a welder/craftsmen, but most of what I am used to is Lo Hi uphill and tig , I never really did a whole lot of downhill, but when I try, it seems like the 8010 wants to not build up at all, and just fall out of the puddle.
I’m having trouble with my bottom fill and caps. I get too squirrelly. Almost like I’m welding too hot and can’t keep no metal on. I’ll have a crater. Wish I could show ya.
You don’t have to show me I know exactly what you’re talking about. Turn it down. If it’s still too hot let it cool off
Also another tip is to go fast on the bottom when it starts to get hot and just go over it again

You could probably incorporate a camera into the top of the pancake hood find a super lightweight one? And figure out an auto darkening lens for it as to see your p.o.v and edit it into the screen too??? Idk I am over here zooming in and slowing down rewinding studying everything so hard 😅

I have an additional question on your restarts. So there is a possibility for slag inclusion on your restarts, and do you think you haven't been called on it because you're burning hotter to get the slag up?

I own a welding business just outside of Chicago. I do pretty much everything on my own as long as I can. What is the real point of having a “Welder helper“ on a pipeline job site?

I can get twice as much done with a (good)helper. That's the real reason they're valuable. It would be extremely hard to hold all these fittings and everything by yourself. It can be done it's just slower

That's a good question. Would say it's probably 80% of the repairs that welders have. I'll try to put that in my next video

That’s just how I do it. Some people lay it way back more than that … to each their own.
