So I’m a decently experienced guitar player but thank you for this! I don’t have any trouble with barre chords but I’ve got some guitarist I’ve play with (he’s really a keyboard player but he plays acoustic sometimes) and I’ve been trying to help him plan an F. I always play it either with a full barre chord or just do the top 4 strings (which involves barring just across the first and second strings), but playing the middle 4 looks easier (no barring) so it might help! Thanks!
When I was a kid, another kid showed me how he played F. He was using all four fingers. But he used the first finger on F, second finger on C and then so forth. It would take him like 15 seconds to change chords to that configuration. I then showed him how to bar the E and B strings with the first finger and how much faster that was. He got pissed at me and never invited me over anymore. Yeah, I couldn't bar the F at first either, just takes time and practice.
Great video, I HATE the F chord shape where you put your finger across all 6 strings on the first fret. Marty, can you show us an easy way to do a B chord next?
make an A chord with your third finger by placing it over the D,G, sand B strings on the second fret then slide them up two frets and barre your index finger over the A,D,G and B strings of the second fret. This is a moveable chord voicing all the way up the neck.
Well yes it's a good shape but that is actually a f with a c in the base. It Will sound a very bit different but it doesn't matter that much for beginners. I ussually do a hendrix shape and muting the high e string. That way it is also very easy to improvise quikly over chords
Thank you for making this content I recently acquired an electric guitar and have followed channel and watch lesson one and two and needed to start lesson three today but I don’t see it… stuff like this is extremely helpful thank you very much !
Keep at it! Your fingers will get a bit stronger and more flexible each time you practice, and it won’t be long before you can play chords effortlessly!
One thing a lot of instructors and books fail to point out is how important the position of your thumb on the back of the neck is. It sounds trivial, but it can make a world of difference if you use it right. You should think of your hand as a fulcrum that pivots around the radius of the back of the neck. Your thumb should be apposing your finger tips, helping to fret down the notes without putting way more stress on your wrist and hand muscles than you need to, which is what makes you hurt. Until the muscle memory kicks in where you can fret a chord without having to stop and think what the notes are, you need to focus on not over working your hand muscles, which discourages a lot of people in the beginning. And don't just hook your thumb over the top of the neck, it can be a valuable tool if you use it right.
The f chord really lives up to its name, same with the b chord.
Ironically the C is easy 😊
The F chord and B chord voicing you're learning is literally a movable shape... So theres the exact same fingering of those in C, G, D, A, and etc.
B flat major

Hold the b and e with your index on the first fret. Then you won’t have to worry about hitting the open high e. It is in F

Marty I like, I learned it backwards index first ending with pinky. As usual you are better.
If you let that top string ring out you get an Fmaj7 which is one of my favorite chords.
