That’s how I felt at first but now I just look up if there’s a non-bar version of the chord that’s easier and I’ll play that instead and still learn my favorite songs. It will sound slightly different but still will be the right notes.

I wanted to learn fade into you so I looked it up and the title was like LEARN FADE INTO YOU WITH JUST THREE EASY CHORDS FOR BEGINNERS and im like fuck yeah ! Then I saw one of them is Bm and was like oh ok. Still learning that chord but it’s getting better (slowly) lol.

Sadly I'm 50 been playing for years not until recently I needed Barred chords, so having said that I'm 50 and learning barred chords...Never too old to learn....and this encouraged me.
How are you doing? Are you able to play barred chords now?
Just here to say I love how this guy went straight to the point and explained everything clearly and effectively. Major props and thanks man

Well you really have to
I’m a beginner guitarist and I didn’t realize how hard barre chords on the guitar were and I have to tell you I went from like 4 strings muted and it sounding like garbage, and then using your advice went to 2 strings muted and actually being able to hear what the chord was suppose to sound like and I was so happy I could’ve cried. Thanks so much for this!
How long did it take you to get it?
Right? You look at it the first time like "one finger can just hold it all down without having to move? Easy!" And then you try it... lol
As a beginner you shouldn't have been learning a bar chord . I spent 2 years learning songs that had no bar chords . Then when you get to that point your fingers are strong and don't struggle so much .
@@itsmorphed6416 not true, you learn them when you start practicing them, many guitarists struggle learning late into playing because they put it off, your fingers toughen up and gain some flexibility after like a week or 2 of doing them daily
@Matt Ball you learn them when you start practicing them ? Well yes . But that doesn't mean straight away . I do believe in a structured course and progressive learning. If you keep on a path of constant progression then inevitably you will learn them .
I learned to play the barre F in the summer holidays 1965. It was slow, painful and the best move I EVER made. Anyone struggling, really try to stick with it. It really IS worth the effort.
Bear in mind too, your guitar's action needs to be reasonable, if it's too high the pain and difficulty are magnified.
Last hint. To learn to place your fingers correctly takes oodles of practice so consider down-tuning the strings a couple of semitones so the E becomes a D and so on. This reduces the tension and makes the fretting easier, also it improves confidence, the more confident you become, the better the result.
One last comment, there's a RUclips of Eric Clapton playing and discussing his 000-28EC and he makes a truism - the better quality the instrument, the easier it is to play.
Took me 40 years to buy the best instrument I could reasonably afford and my playing has improved immeasurably.
Good luck . . . thank you Tony.
thanks for the insight brian
wow you have all chronologically written down, even when you learned the F barred chord
When you literally start crying cuz he makes it look so easy and u just can’t do it
Takes time and practice them every day no matter how bad it sounds. You'll get there. I used to give up every week. Took me about 9 months to get decent at barre chords. A little bit every day.
Sometimes it really just depends on the guitar quality as well. I had a 160$ Spanish guitar for a while and here and there I would get buzzing (and I've been playing for 7 years). Now there was this one time I tried a really expensive guitar and it sounded like magic.
@@TruthAplomado true, I too felt the same.

I had been playing (mediocrely, I grant you) for about 5 years before I ever even *heard* of Barre chords. Having been playing for a bit first might have made it slightly easier, but it still took some time and practice. Just keep going! And I know that a year later, now, you've probably conquered them, but a little extra encouragement never hurt, right?
I know those beginners (like me ) are gonna play barre chords one day......🖤

it might be impossible to young hands too. or maybe the issue is the brain
This is my first time making a barre chord without buzzing (or swearing at my fingers). I’ve been struggling for a couple months, thank you for giving me a solid place to work up from❤️👍🏻

I was also a hater of F chord once (left guitar for 2 months 😂) but now can play it smoothly just having issues while switching chords, hoping to get over that 🤞

Thank you so much Tony! I have looked at so many videos on barre chords, but they all would go straight into moving chord shapes. This is the first video to actually help me improve my technique and actually play a barre chord. I still can't believe I just played one without much buzzing or muffling. I can finally continue on my guitar journey after almost giving up.
I love your tip about playing partial barre chords because it encourages players to keep going and practicing even if it's not perfect. It shows even as a beginner you can modify so the chords still sound nice and that's the kind of thing that keeps new players playing consistently. That in between when things just sound bad is hard, and I think that's when a lot of people give up.
This is unbelievable. I am self taught and avoided bar chords for years. When I say "years," I mean 26 years. I've been playing at home since I was 21 years old. I only used the basic chords because it was so hard to hold down all those strings. I am now 48 and will use your tips. Thanks so much. You are a caring person to show us this.
Sincerely,
Pixie Z.

I can relate, I'm just turned 50 and been playing since I was 20, been avoiding difficult cords out of laziness probably LoL, but I picked up the ukulele 4 months ago, forcing not only cord shape discipline but also strumming with no pick and finger picking skills. But once you strum your Barre cords well it's a no brainier they're much more full and beautiful.
I’m 59 and started playing guitar a year ago instead of watching TV. I love Tony’s lessons.
I avoid Barre chords like poison. Everytime I see them in a song or tutorial I just don't even attempt it. Time to face my utter worst fear.

Given the fact that you'll be ruling out entire keys for some songs without a capo, I'd recommend getting used to it. :)

Just played my first Barre chord using the tip where you pull the guitar closer to you with your other arm. Such simple advice, yet extremely effective. I cant thank you enough.
I want to thank you for the tip about pulling the body of the guitar toward you with the strumming arm. I tried that and immediately I went from having a muted string or two to playing the f barre chord clearly. This is a major milestone in my guitar playing. So simple yet so profound advise.

What just happened? A few years ago i stopped trying to learn how to play the guitar, because the Barre chords were too hard for me and hurt my fingers. My teacher told me to just keep practicing but I had other stuff in mind (video games, girls etc.).
I just saw how you used the index fingers SIDE to press down all the strings. I was using the flat palm side of the index finger. Tried using the side and now it's completely fine... Why didn't my teacher tell me to turn my finger a bit? It makes so much sense...
Congratulation

Man I never even realised I used the side of my finger til I read this comment.
When I was but a wee haggis, my guitar teacher chastised me for using the side of my finger to play barre chords
Though I can't duplicate what you are doing yet, understanding the importance of doing it is very valuable. You explain things with a lot of clarity and thanks.
I love the F chord only restarted from the last 3 months but i absolutely adore it. Hated it to begin with always having a sore finger, but just by constantly playing something just clicked it felt so right to play ☺

@Gangsta Rock whats up with it? 🍑
Tip: An F position on the 1st fret (where the F chord actually is) also has wider frets and a stronger resistance from the strings (Ever tried to do a bend on a 1st or 2nd fret?).One could try the same F position on higher frets which are narrower and where the strings feel a bit 'looser'. That way your fingers start building the strength necessary for all the other positions, including The F chord. There's no way around barre chords. Repetition is key. Thanks for the video Tony
Jair Dávila 9i
Jair Dávila great point thanks for sharing
100% is a way around barre chords...just use your thumb to barre the bass note, and you can hit every note of the F chord without having to do the full finger barre, only need to barre the high B and E with that index, simple I dont understand why people dont do this.

Jair Dávila whole heartedly agree
Literally came here struggling so hard to play the f barre chord and then after this I can actually kind of play it !!! Thank you SO much

Am struggling with barre chords right now (with some success... finally) Your comment about not having to Play all six strings (in the beginning at least) is one of the best tips I've seen on RUclips. Thank You!
I was struggling and still do to some degree. I keep it simple. Play the simpler forms until my hand, fingers, arm get used to it...then I increase the difficulty a bit. Keep in mind, you will NOT learn the guitar overnight. But I can promise you, with diligence and practice, you WILL see results :)
try the jimi hendrix version if you got a long thumb.

This was a freaking awesome tutorial! Super helpful tricks and I love how you explained the theory so simply. Wonderful job!
Wow! Thank you so much. I didn't know that F was a problem for so many. It's also the exact one I have been struggling with. You changed my beginner playing immediately! I'm so grateful!
Using the side of the index finger rather than the ‘meaty part’ has made a huge difference! It opens up the pinky and ring fingers to fret properly
Your finger roll technique is something that I will be practicing the rest of my days. Thanks Tony.
Finger roll technique!? I don't see one
Using the outside, boney part of the finger. 1:30 seconds into the video. This is a great tip. Takes getting used to, but you will do it naturally with a little practice.

I’ve been playing guitar for around five years and really struggled with barre chords with getting them one day and doing the same thing the next and the high strings being muted. These tips seem very obvious to me now and have gotten me into the swing of barre now. Very helpful for people who are only just playing guitar and find barre in their music sheets.
I've been playing for a year or so, and I can tell you something guys: Barre chords are not the worst thing in the world. It takes a lot of practice and real effort, but with enough patience you'll handle them.

Yeah, the finger roll is priceless and new to me (after 45 years of guitar playing.) Down the road any tips on anxiety reduction with regard to bar chords might be nice - I find that while daydreaming on the couch I form them in a timely, almost effortless manner - but when I think about them (e.g., anticipate a transition while recording or performing) too much, they start sounding raunchy. Thanks again!
I’m relativity new to guitar but could relate to your over thinking some chord or thing your trying to do it and then Stress to me is the ultimate killer of guitar playing!,! ,When I try really hard and get stressed/ mad I absolutely cannot play whatever I’m working on So what I actually realized is if you are getting frustrated and stressed and over thinking it just let it go and come back to it ... another little tip is Wine will help way more than a Redbull Guitar is not something you can Power through , you must Relax and enjoy it Even if you have to practice over and over try ending on a positive note never in frustration and if your frustrated with what your working on stop and learn a new Riff or piece of a song that inspires you and makes you feel good and Happy then end on that cause you will want to pick it up again 👍🎸🤔😍🎸🎤
