I have a question can you do a tutorial video for the Halo 2 soundtrack Reclaimer I can't find anything on RUclips or Google for it. The only thing that is there is the audio. The soundtrack was composed by Marty O Donnell, Michael Salvatori and Steve Vai.
There's so many songs I would look at playing and then come across a barre chord and say "no." I forced myself to play the F in Hotel California (thanks for that lesson Marty!) as a barre chord and after playing it a hundred times I finally started getting it.
That’s how you do it. You force yourself to do it. You play it over and over again in a progression and you will definitely get it. Marty said “Don’t avoid them!”
Uhm I’m very possibly wrong , I usually am 😜 , but I think you mean F#..... unless your speaking of another part of the song that I’m not familiar with ( there are many lol)..... but the way I was taught and think Marty teaches that way to if my memory serves is Bm, F#M, A,E,G,D,Em, back to F#M to lead back start it all over again at Bm.
My dad is 60, barely knows what youtube is. I showed him your channel as im much more of a beginner. Anytime he has trouble learning a new song he always says "lets see how marty plays it!" lol cracks me up
I've only been playing guitar for five months. After some practice -- I can make the f-barre chord shape now with little hesitation -- although the B string still doesn't ring out. But I'm not worried. I remember the days when it took me two minutes just to get my fingers set. I know eventually everything will come together. Edit: I’ve been playing for two years now and the idea of not being able to play barre chords seems like a foreign concept. They are beginner chords in my mind now. Never give up.
@Banter Shack Wow, I just got one hell of motivation from that. Thanks man I'll def keep on practicing Edit: I like your content, you just earned yourself a subscriber.
Beginner here & YES.. I WAS just going to avoid them ALL TOGETHER bc Im only interested in playing for myself.. buttttt.. a challenge so I think I must.
The best video on Barre chords I have seen. Showing how the elbow position changes so much and how it affects the index finger alignment seems so easy, but no one ever goes to that level of detail. Thanks Marty!
“You gotta play it bad... eventually... little less bad” As Marty pulls his hand from his guitar and has a one on one with it. Your hand responds, priceless!!!
Notes: Play bad to get it good eventually (work through it) - muscle memory and strength will develop Elbow against ribcage - puts hand in a position more parallel with the frets Side of finger - 45 degree angle Practice bar down first - then practice shape down first - then whole chord down at once (freeze spray!) Add to progressions - take time Pull back on the neck a bit Reinforce barre with middle finger (e-minor) Great lesson! 😁
Due to injuring my elbow I can't rotate my wrist as flat (supination) so some chords were very hard. I found that barre chords were much easier when I used a strap and played standing up. This allows me to rotate the guitar at an angle to my torso and also have the headstock higher. This is a really great tip to check the alignment of your elbow to your wrist when working on barre chords. Also, forcing yourself to use them in a musical context is the only way to really get good at them. When I'm jamming I can get away with the hendrix style chords that are the most comfortable to play, but other peoples songs often require a certain voicing that isn't always available. Barre chords really do open up the neck.
Marty, I started playing guitar earlier this year at the ripe age of 30. I can’t thank you enough for your teaching methods - by a mile the best guitar tutorials on RUclips. I have progressed in the past 6/7 months so much more than I thought I ever could and the majority of my learning has come from your videos. I hope you know how much you have influenced me and countless others. You are a legend my friend please never stop teaching ❤
I started to play guitar 6 months ago thanks to this channel , the first 3 months I learned fast then …. I met the bar chords… I had to come back to this channel and man this shoulder position trick is a life saving one , thank you from the bottom of my heart
I might humbly add ... 1) Using a capo will dramatically reduce the finger strain needed to perform barre chords. It is a great training asset. 2) There is no shame in using your strumming hand to physically move your fretting fingers into their new positions for a while. Will-power and wish-power just aren't enough at first.
Love how Marty teaches things on the guitar I've been playing guitar since I was 10 now 67 I am a better guitar player now that I've ever been thanks to Marty's videos. I have learnt 50 songs from different things he has showed my newest song I learned to play was runaway Del Shannon a lot of the things he talks about I taught myself from watching people play in band and he breaks things down and makes it much easier then having books and going to a guitar instructor. Keep up the great work Marty you should show on one of your videos how to play ain't talkin about love my Van Halen I got a little of it worked out on my own but need help. Keep up the great videos, 🎸🎸🎸
I'm doing the course on barre chords and it's fantastic. Deep explanations into what's going on. Breaks it down into small steps. Pure Marty. Thanks for this.
Marty, you need to do a ... here is where I started playing guitar, and how I ended up here today. We need to hear the backstory on you. The way you pick up someone's guitar and just absolutely blow them away is amazing (look at Beato's face and the owners of every Memphis guitar shop you visit). Give up the goods on the Marty!
Marty, I have been playing guitar for 5 years, and I watch your videos from learning a new song to Just simply going back to the basics. Bro you have completely changed the way I play and I am so thankful for you and your lessons, keep doing what you do and know that you got a good student out of it and a fan.. KEEP ROCKING ON !!!!!
Oh my god, thank you so much. I'm a casual guitarist and I've been playing for a long time. I've been avoiding anything further down the neck because I can't seem to do any barre but B and F. When you gave the tip to pull a little back on the neck, I immediately tested it out and it sounds so much better.
Been watching you for a year now...just bought the lifetime...can't say I regret it one bit! You're my top guy! I have been struggling with the dreaded Barre Chords, hoping this helps me.
Marty your GREAT. You hit the nail on the HEAD with this lesson. Coming across this video help at my 57yrs I have picked up the ax again the one huge problem I have is barring and in the video you just showed me what I needed to do thank YOU I have to go and put your explanation to some good use I would love for you to do a video on fingering and reading problems for older people that would be an awesome video and if you did I will find them but if you didn't I'll look for them Marty you have improved my playing 100% even though it's still at the terrible stage please explain everybody what you been explaining that is going to sound shity at first for a while but they will find it rewarding believe me
Marty you have been a guiding light to learning, I picked up a guitar one year ago. Your lessons for beginners has been a beautiful start. A personal thought, my brother played with Rich Rockwell, yes this is the man whom could make any guitar sing, no not playing it ,but next to him. To understand this, Rich was with the band the Pollywogs, which turned into Credence Clearwarter Revival. My brother was a bad ass on drums. I wondered for so many years, do I have what my brother has for playing music? Lets get back to Rich, sad story, DRUGs. Rich was a true Spirit. I was 67 picking up the guitar, my brothers passing was 22 years. Grief has no time lines. I heard a song on KRVM here in Eugene Oregon the other day. Girl from the North Country. So I looked you up for help. My lucky day, you had a lesson on this song. Thank you. I am having a time with Bar Cords., Yep you a lesson on this with a true message as always, keep at it. Marty with the heart of hearts, thank you. I loved an Angel, my last love. I so want to play this song for my dead heart of mine. Thank you for your teaching.
Thanks for that No1 tip. That is what's been holding be back all these years. I find bar chords hard because they don't sound clean so I give up. I'll get back to them now and try again.
I have been messing with an acoustic guitar for about a month after a 50 year break from a less than stellar junior high stab. Man I wish I had the internet back then. Like all kids I wanted to be a rock star, had the hair, just no talent i thought. What I lacked was instruction. Still got the hair :) I ALWAYS end back with Marty when I look for something new or to improve. He definitely has a good persona and is a natural teacher but as important he has hands like mine. Regular hands that look more comfortable swinging a hammer than doing contortions. Proves you don't have to have mutant absurdly long and skinny fingers to play guitar. Kinda of like encouraging an average size guy he can play basketball too. This video definitely helped and what is amazing about youtube is you can get so many tips from different people. Look at them all because nobody hardly gives all the tips. In this one Marty helped by showing how bringing the arm into your body helps with a barre. He also hinted at pressing the guitar into your body adds to the barre, kind of a balancing opposing tension. Only thing he didn't mention is the thumb position in the middle of the neck which helps clamp the barre better although that is definitely where his thumb was. All thumbs up for this guy. He even has similar taste in hats. My go to hat is a straw mexican fedora.
I just wana say your elbow tip is amazing. Truly helped my barchords and playing immediately. I know it sounds stupid. But without thinking about it how naturally your elbow drifts out. Great tip.
Learning bar chords and the notes of the top E and A string is priceless it's like the first step being able to comfortably play with other musicians and actually use music speak like this tune is a A to G progression and so on.. I know it was the first time I started to not sound like a complete noob at jam sessions which always makes playing with others and having self confidence
thank you for this, it helped me realize that my positioning of the guitar was horrible and caused wayyyyyy too much of a diagonal across the fret making it more difficult
Amazing. Been on and off with learning guitar (mostly off) for about 20 years. Always hit a wall (F and B) and stopped playing. After following the chapters in Martys course on Barr Chords I've finally got them. For some reason they just click and can now play them. Don't what I'm doing different to how I've tried it in the past, but can't thank you enough, cheers dude!
Thanks my guy! This is a godsend. I have had a guitar for over a year now, but just started trying to seriously learn some basics. You have no idea how restrictive avoid Barre chords can be. Time to practice my c minor for dixieland delight
I've had my guitar for 7 years, decided a few months ago that I was going to seriously start learning how to play the damn thing, and I know for a fact that I would not be near as good as I am if it weren't for you Marty. Thank you, you're the man!
I think another point on barre chords is get a good guitar with nice action. Because you’ll find yourself getting a lot of cramp having to push down so hard to barre them. I have muscle strength just from my Yamaha F310, but I went and bought a Eastman E1D and the action and guitar is just so much better. so if you have a pretty cheap guitar it’s great to learn on but you have to realise buying a better guitar will certainly help things move forward. At least in my experience!
You’re a fantastic coach, honestly. You definitely love what you do! I admire it. The only way I’m as patient as you is if I’m trying to spread the gospel… and I’m still not as patient. Don’t give up teaching people or learning another trade or subject to teach others bc you are great!
Marty, I first picked up a guitar and searched up guitar lessons for beginners and I found year videos and you are very helpful, and you are very specific on what to do which I loved when learning, then I found out that barre chords were actually a thing, I thought it was just open chords, then I tried barre chord, and it sounded crappy and did not understand why, then I searched up barre chords and found your video and you helped me understand it so well, I did not hide from them and never gave up and got better. I just want to thank you for your lessons :)
take time to build up strength. If you have an option to practice on an electric it's much easier, helps build confidence. But keep working the acoustic as it'll build up strength, being as hard as it is! Plus it helps with quality - muted strings, fret buzz, etc.
Hey Marty, just wanted to thank you. I wrote a comment about help with barre chords and low and behold this morning I was watching the suggested lesson.
Yooooo thanks Marty! I’ve been playing for years now and haven’t perfected my barre chord ever even though it improved over time. But this is just the cherry on top which made all my strings rung out nicely :)
Thanks man, been playing for almost a year now and learned some songs so I tried moving up to challenge myself a bit more and barre cords were really discouraging me until this video. I really appreciate the tips! NEW SUBSCRIBER!
I feel your pain. I struggled with barre chords in the early days also. A great tip I received was to use a capo on (say) 3rd fret and play the chords as you would with no capo…there is less tension on the strings with a capo so they are easier to push down. Try the F chord with a capo on 3rd or 5th fret, it will be easier and will keep you motivated to keep trying.
dude!!! bringing my elbow in like that made such a dramatic difference I cant believe how much easier it is to play not only barre chords but all chords now that my arm is in the right position :D :O
Another suggestions is alternate fingering positions on majors. Play the Em with pinky, ring and index when going from ‘E to F or Fmin or F# or F#min, or even C#min. Works for me.
i want to thank you for making the videos, and the programs for free! this particular skill i've been working on, and one thing you taught here about pulling the neck towards you a bit to give that strength, did the trick for me! i've done everything else, and couldn't get the high two strings especially the b to ring clear i pressed so hard! but that tip did it for me, saves my hands too, don't need to press any harder just that tip. so big thanks!
I have been struggling with barre chords for years. Keeping my elbow close to my body and putting down fingers 2-4 before dropping my index finger both very helpful ideas.
omfg... I love you so much dude haha. Gigantic thank you. Ive been struggling with barre chords and swearing at nothing for ages. This has given me a big boost in terms of focus.
Oh man my in person teach whom I’ve stopped going to , nothing to do with his teaching ! He was great and a great person in general , but I digress lol.... he would constantly hammer that “ play it badly “ , play through the mistakes and keep playing along with the song and not to get hung up on it not sounding 100%.... but I had to get it just right before moving on ... which led me to just more or less quitter ..... I had / have a mental block or something on just moving past the many many mistakes I make lol. Funny though how I decide today to check out some RUclips lessons etc and this video is the one I come across... that first off says exactly what I need to hear to practice and learn from .... you da man Marty
Marty thank you for your amazing ability to teach us guitar. You are very rare and a unique person with an amazing ability to patiently teach us. I have learned so much and have more to learn. You are a "blessing " May God bless you with all you desire that is pleasing to Him.
Good video. One additional tip: Start on electric. With light gauge strings and low action. You can play it unplugged at all hours in most situations. You can always work up to acoustic as you improve. Oh yeah, and just keep your head down and keep at it. If it’s hard, practice more.
Thanks for watching and supporting MartyMusic! I've got some free courses at my site www.martymusic.com
Love your lessons Marty. Camera has been a bit out of focus for the past few videos (:
Hey Marty! Could you possibly do a lesson on AC/DC the razors edge? Thank you for your work!
Where’s the specific Barre
Chord Link you mention..?

This is easy. Just learn to move your capo fast.
Hahaha Made me laugh!!
Thanks man, I’ll make sure to do that😂

Oh this is big brain time

I started doing that the same way. I forced myself to do the F in Hotel California and it has really opened a new door to tons of songs
This is literally what I’m doing rn I want to learn hotel California super good so I can just start playing barre chords super early in middle school
That’s how you do it. You force yourself to do it. You play it over and over again in a progression and you will definitely get it. Marty said “Don’t avoid them!”

The spray noises are the most important part I think. Its a must.
Barre Chords definitely are not easy at first, but they are convenient and useful when you get the hang of them!
Theyre necessary
A good middle step is to just play your open chords wherever you want mute or dont strum the open strings
They’re definitely tricky especially when you start stretching your fingers and play something that doesn’t sound nice
A absolute king providing the free resources from learning guitar, if marty music wasn’t here, I would of never gave guitar another go
The best video on Barre chords I have seen. Showing how the elbow position changes so much and how it affects the index finger alignment seems so easy, but no one ever goes to that level of detail.
Thanks Marty!
“You gotta play it bad... eventually... little less bad”
As Marty pulls his hand from his guitar and has a one on one with it.
Your hand responds, priceless!!!
Notes:
Play bad to get it good eventually (work through it) - muscle memory and strength will develop
Elbow against ribcage - puts hand in a position more parallel with the frets
Side of finger - 45 degree angle
Practice bar down first - then practice shape down first - then whole chord down at once (freeze spray!)
Add to progressions - take time
Pull back on the neck a bit
Reinforce barre with middle finger (e-minor)
Great lesson! 😁

Ive been playing for three years now, this guys bassically taught me everything ik
Does anyone hands got sore even after getting good at barre chords?
All the time. Been playing for 5 years
Sore hands, fingers and forearms! Squeezing down on the guitar neck like that is a workout
Helps to find a bit of your finger that contacts better.
My guitar teacher has been playing for 30+ years and he still gets tender fingers after playing for a while.
take time to build up strength. If you have an option to practice on an electric it's much easier, helps build confidence. But keep working the acoustic as it'll build up strength, being as hard as it is! Plus it helps with quality - muted strings, fret buzz, etc.
Arm and barre finger position solved my frustrating problem. Thanks Marty!!
i wish i knew using the side of your finger ages ago omg it makes such a difference, thanks
Hey Marty, just wanted to thank you. I wrote a comment about help with barre chords and low and behold this morning I was watching the suggested lesson.
Yooooo thanks Marty! I’ve been playing for years now and haven’t perfected my barre chord ever even though it improved over time. But this is just the cherry on top which made all my strings rung out nicely :)
the elbow thing is SO helpful thank you
Elbow placement helped me out SO much. Thx !!
The elbow trick really helped me after 7 years of guitar playing and not feeling confident with barre chords lol
Thank you for the elbow hint about half the time I was getting the twang on several strings. This cleared up a lot thanks!
Thank you Marty
Omg thank you so much I just suddenly be able to barre by not avoiding it and I'm getting pretty consistence at it now thank you so much!
Tip nr 1 is so true! If you avoid it never gets better. Applies to so many things in life too!
For anyone starting out on guitar (like myself) Marty is gold. Thanks for the great tips dude.
Thanks for the encouragement. I’ve been avoiding barre chords for years because they sound soooo awful when I play them. I will soldier on.
dude!!! bringing my elbow in like that made such a dramatic difference I cant believe how much easier it is to play not only barre chords but all chords now that my arm is in the right position :D :O
Another suggestions is alternate fingering positions on majors. Play the Em with pinky, ring and index when going from ‘E to F or Fmin or F# or F#min, or even C#min. Works for me.
that elbow trick did it for me!you the man marty!
Thanks for teaching us in this lesson with acoustic because most of the time ppl strugle play barre chord in acoustic.
i want to thank you for making the videos, and the programs for free! this particular skill i've been working on, and one thing you taught here about pulling the neck towards you a bit to give that strength, did the trick for me! i've done everything else, and couldn't get the high two strings especially the b to ring clear i pressed so hard! but that tip did it for me, saves my hands too, don't need to press any harder just that tip. so big thanks!
Always sharing great knowledge Marty, thanks a lot and greetings all the way from Mexico !!
I learn so much from this channel.
Years later. YEARS and I’m still watching Marty
You are a "blessing "
May God bless you with all you desire that is pleasing to Him.
I love Marty in a completely plutonic way of course!
Thank you. I have been working on this. That's why I haven't been watching for a bit. I am getting better.
Your method seems to be the best one. It worked out for me. Thanks Marty!!!
By far the best guitar lessons of RUclips. You’ve taught me everything I know.
Marty is an absolute hero
This is such a nice complement to your Barre Chord Lesson! Thanks Marty you are the one
You are an absolute master marty 🙏🙏🙏 your lessons are first class
Great class from a great teacher..
That really helped
Using the side of the finger was the main key for me
Thanks 🙏🏻
Switching from E to Bm is driving me crazy trying to play wicked games. Such an easy song and my pause is killing me!
Excellent instructions! Thank you
man i love this guys energy!! i already like this video more than the others lol
Elbows in already is helping a ton - I used to play with no restriction and tennis elbow has been really bullying me lately, but I’m bullying back!
I seriously like the way you teach. Thank you
Thanks Marty for all your content. Guys like you and Robert Baker keep all of us closet pickers growing and learning.
Good video.
One additional tip: Start on electric. With light gauge strings and low action. You can play it unplugged at all hours in most situations. You can always work up to acoustic as you improve.
Oh yeah, and just keep your head down and keep at it. If it’s hard, practice more.
this is actually SO helpful. thanks you so much!
You're so welcome!
