Like you I started with a wr250r, upgraded to a ktm 690, did 30,000km on it full of mechanical issues and stress, and then regressed to the little WR. 80,000km later, all states of Australia, zero mechanical issues, i do not regret it. Also, unpopular opinion: The WR is better on the highway than the 690 because the 690 vibrates like mofo. After 3 hours the tips of my fingers tingle from it. I can sit on the highway at 120kmh all day on the WR and I'm fine. Love the power of the 690, light weight for a big bike (i can go nearly anywhere on the 690 that i can go on the WR) but i would never do a big trip on one again, on the road or off.
@Brock, as it happens yes. 2008 690SMC in Melbourne, just had new rocker arms etc. Runs fine but will need new piston soon. I'll take $5k @Carlospiecy no, the 701 is just as bad. Have 2 friends who've sold theirs and had rocker arm issues as proof. Maybe the new 690 engine which so far is only in the Dukes, with a twin camshafts (one as a counter balance shaft) are better but I don't know. Considering the LC4 motor has had this problem since all the way back when it was the KTM 620, then the 640, through to 690 version 1, version 2, and version 3 I have big doubts they've fixed it now.
I have the 2017 Husqvarna 701 enduro with the updated engine, I bought it brand new and have just about clocked 15,000 klm on it without any issues. I use it for everything from Commuting to work in sydney traffic, long distance hwy and adventure offroad riding,This new model does not suffer from vibrations that the KTM 690 riders complain of. I have also owned a new WR250R - 2013 model which is a really good bike in its own right, but due to its lack of low end torque and the feeling of forever flogging the engine to keep a decent pace on the road i would not go back to one. Its a shame yamaha never made a WR450R.
Coming from someone who pretty much only rides in sand, speed is your friend!!! The bike will sort the rest for you, just gotta trust it. Love the channel btw, definitely an inspiration for getting out of strictly dirt and getting into adventure riding!
With speed comes stability, you need to be aggressive with the throttle and not be afraid to throw around the back end of the bike in the turns, and hang off the rear to get the front floating in the straights if you want to be fast in sand. Tight maneuvers require some wheel spin and bike control, and the occasional powerslide... No ABS, no traction control, just rip it, otherwise you'll just bog down or sink the front end. I live in Nevada, if there's one type of riding that I know, its how to be fast in the desert XD
Hey Tom man I really enjoyed watching this video and camping trip you are making me and my friends so jealous bro,,2 to 4 more weeks before we can even ride on the roads here probably mid may before the trails will be clear of snow ( had over 80 inches ) once it snows it doesn't melt till spring So glad I can watch your video's ,,you guys would be fun to ride with that's for sure ride safe my motorcycle brothers from another mother ,,LIKED ( BIG BIG THUMBS UP )
I camped at plantation and rode them trails just 2 weeks ago, awesome times, did you take that mt difficult 4wd track as it goes from that plantation camp ground and brings you out at the oval in Halls Gap
Thank for all the great vids!!! If you could only have one bike at a time and we’re moving on from the WR what bike do you think you would choose, or would you stay with the WR? I’ve been thinking of going to the 690 but really unsure.
Thought I would ask some experts. Will the plastic body parts from a wr250f fit the wr250r. Some some black plastic parts on ebay but it was for the wr250f.
Hey Tom, wondering how you would compare the wr to the 690 enduro? Currently own the 690 but never fell in love with it. Looking for a light weight low maintenance adventure bike. Thanks!
Very nice video Tom. I bought a new WR250R about 8 months ago and its ready for some new tyres. What do you think are the best tyres for this bike. D606? I generally ride 1-2 hours highway to various forest trails in SE QLD, mainly day trips, but also looking to do multi-day trips soon. Cheers
Thanks Tom, your advice is appreciated. Some riders recommend Pirelli MT21 on front and D606 on rear. Have you tried that? Is that a better combo, or do you just stick with D606 for both?
Yes Tom. Your fucking videos are awesome. Need more. BTW a question. I'm planning to move to Australia. Are there back you can ride "spirititdly" without your licence taken or is speeding in Australia too restricted
Nerb1 yo nerb. Big fan of your channel. Thanks for the sugestion but u was thinking twisties around Victoria or new south Wales. Can you actually open up a bike slightly fast around those locations or is a police going to take your licence with a fat fine. I've heard speeding is like proper serious in Australia especially Victoria
Correct. If you get caught, its pretty hefty. You can pick your places though. I wouldnt say I strictly abide by the speed limits, but I certainly wouldnt speed in populated areas. Say hello when you get here ;)
its worse in WA - police state, speed cameras everywhere that are hidden in the bush so are hardly visible as well as unmarked police in cars and on bikes
I don't care what dual sport I would ride with, but I feel you man! I have had my bike for a year and a half. Put over 7,000 miles on it ,and I cant find any buds to ride with. I do adventures alone and it is not as fun, or as safe.
Rockbiter Hd hey bud. Not looking for an argument. I enjoyed the vid. There are two varieties of angus. Black and red. There are more black, mostly because thats what the market likes. Both taste just as good though.👍🍻

I agree, no one believes when I say the WR is better on road then the 690, WR is buttery smooth
Be by chance sellin a 690? ;-)
What about the new 701 it's supposed to be reliable
@Brock, as it happens yes. 2008 690SMC in Melbourne, just had new rocker arms etc. Runs fine but will need new piston soon. I'll take $5k

Doing my first moto camping trip on my 2020 wr250r in Florida. 200 miles to the campsite and watching your videos are getting me absolutely pumped!

Tom took a riding course with Bimmer's GS adventure bike :) fun videos to watch.

Simon Chant “You’re”
They’re taking a free course. Gaining experience
Lol I like how you put the cooking steak in slow motion.
Great video! What is your audio mic setup? Sound is great. Thanks for sharing your WR250R adventures. This will be my next MC!
Standing up and keeping on the power helps with riding in sand.
Nice channel bro !
Thank for all the great vids!!! If you could only have one bike at a time and we’re moving on from the WR what bike do you think you would choose, or would you stay with the WR? I’ve been thinking of going to the 690 but really unsure.
Great videos. So what is your recommended ADV setup for the WR250?
Thought I would ask some experts. Will the plastic body parts from a wr250f fit the wr250r. Some some black plastic parts on ebay but it was for the wr250f.
Hey Tom, wondering how you would compare the wr to the 690 enduro? Currently own the 690 but never fell in love with it. Looking for a light weight low maintenance adventure bike. Thanks!
How did Brendo go with the broken engine, did he repair or replace?
Nice video. Can the wr250r be an everyday bike, 50-60miles/day, mostly tarmac?
Looks like goldfields track, rode it on my mountain bike
How did you mount your heated grip controller?
Very nice video Tom. I bought a new WR250R about 8 months ago and its ready for some new tyres. What do you think are the best tyres for this bike. D606? I generally ride 1-2 hours highway to various forest trails in SE QLD, mainly day trips, but also looking to do multi-day trips soon. Cheers
Yeah I like the d606’s, they aren’t the best tyres but they are cheap and last a long time
Thanks Tom, your advice is appreciated. Some riders recommend Pirelli MT21 on front and D606 on rear. Have you tried that? Is that a better combo, or do you just stick with D606 for both?
Why is australia so amazing that's it I'm movin'
I hope you like paying tax
it's not cheap
Come enjoy ! Australia has everything and people are good..very nice place...even the racist people not too bad Lol
im surprised you know the song you were singing at 7:00
Dude you went to the smyths skatepark?!?! Fuck I wish I got to see you there
Great vids man. What tires are you guys running?
Nice ride I like the Enduro vids best.
Can you do a IMS vs Safari and also hire much did it cost in shipping for IMS?
Yes Tom. Your fucking videos are awesome. Need more. BTW a question. I'm planning to move to Australia. Are there back you can ride "spirititdly" without your licence taken or is speeding in Australia too restricted
If you live in the NT you'll be fine. No speed limits there.

its worse in WA - police state, speed cameras everywhere that are hidden in the bush so are hardly visible as well as unmarked police in cars and on bikes
Vic and NSW are probably your worst states for police and twisties. Always see them around and a lot of them are speed limited to only 60kph.
What are those bar-mounted lights?
What were the names of the campsites you stayed at?
chimney campfire = instant like
What state forests are these?
Goondiwindi pork john Williamson lol catchy song
Where do I find WR250R buds to go on adventures with? :(
I don't care what dual sport I would ride with, but I feel you man! I have had my bike for a year and a half. Put over 7,000 miles on it ,and I cant find any buds to ride with. I do adventures alone and it is not as fun, or as safe.

The only way to ride sand is fast with your fingers crossed.
I always heard that kangaroos are madly dangerous. Didn’t look like it in your video

Rockbiter Hd hey bud. Not looking for an argument. I enjoyed the vid. There are two varieties of angus. Black and red. There are more black, mostly because thats what the market likes. Both taste just as good though.👍🍻
