      DRZ will be like a 450F with little less HP with FCR carb en 3x3mod. and with a full exhaust it will rip good.

    Having owned both, the WR250R wins hands down for sheer fun factor. You can wring its neck all day and drive it 75-80mph all the way home. Ran it with moded suspension and 14/52 gears. Ate up single track and highway miles too. Looking forward to Yamahas next release on the platform. Hopefully a 300-350cc. My 300L Rally will keep me smiling until then.

    Yamaha needs to make the wr450 a true 50 state legal dual sport. Or Honda with their 450.

      +Bryce Piper You could say this for any manufacturer who has a 450. I would LOVE a KTM 450EXC with 25,000 mi valve checks and 3000 mi oil changes, but would it perform as well as my RFS, probably not.

      +P Kurk I have a 450 exc that I ride more as a dual sport. I don't race but I do push it occasionally. The valves are easy to check but they haven't moved at in in over 5000 KM (roughly 3300 miles) and the oil is so easy to change I would do it on the side of the road if I wanted or needed too. I wouldn't be frightened to dual sport the exc. It does take a little more maintenance and costs a bit more money but I enjoy it more off road AND on road. My DR just didn't have enough power or a sixth gear and this bothered me anytime I was going more than 55 MPH.

      Chain Driven I have a 450 exc as well and I love it. I guess my point was yes the maintenance is easy but it's still one more thing that's gotta get done that doesn't on some dual sports.

    I had both, put 15k miles on each. Primary use is commuting to work and local dual sport rides but I have taken both on week long rides in Baja and the western U.S. I’m 6’ about 220 lbs and I would say both bikes got better after a respring and revalve. I had a local shop do both bikes with the same intended purpose. The Wr has the better suspension, the rougher the terain the better it handles. There isnt anyplace the suspension doesnt work. The DRZ, handles it up to a point then you are exceeding the capabilities of the suspension. On the road it works well. The DRZ has better options for a larger fuel capacity, up to 6.5 gallons, the WR has a 4.8 gallon option. The WR gets 10 MPG more so the fuel difference isnt so big. The WR felt cramped when I was loaded for camping, the DRZ has more room. In sand the WR rules, the DRZ is way more work. My shoulders are tired after a day of rough terrain on the DRZ. WR is a 6 speed and it cruises at So Cal freeway speeds while I would never try it on the DRZ. The WR had a programer and Pipe. For me, I stayed with the DRZ due to having more room and being field repairable which is huge in Baja or out in the desert. I can pull the carb if needed and there arent any sensors to go bad even though that almost never happens on yamahas. The DRZ desperately needs a 6th gear and a diet. The WR need another 200 CC unless you are happy shifting all day. The WR gave me confidence and made me a better dirt rider. They are both good bikes. If I was riding local trails and not hauling camping gear then it would be WR all the way.

    I did notice going from the Yamoto (200) to the dr350s.. the dr was still light enough to throw around but had that tractor factor that made it easier to get through the weird obstacles.. Great video though.. I believe a lot of what was talked about can be summed up to a lot of bikes based on size and fuel delivery.

    I'll also note there is a wide ratio gear set (from ACT) you can buy for the DRZ. It leaves first alone, and widens the rest, supposedly makes it less buzzy on the road. I want to get one for my DRZ.
    That said, have you ever ridden a bike with a Lectron carb? It seems pretty neat, you tune it once and don't need to rejet based on altitude because it auto-meters the fuel. It's a carb that acts like EFI.

    Great comparison, well thought out points about both bikes. Light dual sport bikes are so useful and fun to ride. I would include the CRF250L and the mighty DR in your shopping list as well, or even a KLR as long as you recognize the limitations (more rider than anything). I think realistically you can leave out any bike with a 100 hour piston and valve replacement interval (KTM/Husqvarna), at least if you ride the longer rides I have done here in Idaho. Good Job EVERIDE!

    Great review. After watching this and a review on the KLX250, I stayed on course and picked up a nice 09 DRZ-400S very reasonably. Adding knobbies and away we go! My last bike was a 04 YZ250F, which was a screamer...but accessible riding was a factor in selling it.

    I ride a wr and agree with most things you say here. the fuel injection is a closed loop system which means it has a maf sensor but no air/fuel or o2 sensor which is why the altitude affected it. if someone buys a wr with the intent of the typical mods (pipe, airbox, power commander) they will be very happy with the results. I have zero experience with a drz so I can't compare but both have reputations for reliability. the wr really does become twice the bike once it's uncorked. as always cool video man. thanks

    Great video Tyler, Amen to the tractor factor, lower compression/redline, more durability. Just put a new set of Kenda Parker dt's on my 96 dr350SE. love my 6th gear. Now if I can just figure out what to do with the suspension. Guess i still have a little time. Still sloppy up here in the Salt lake area.

    Love my WR250R, it's all about riding, and riding, and riding, with no worries. It's not a racing bike or a real dirt bike. In fact it's great on twisty mountain pavement. I've got an older 250 for the rough stuff when there's a chance of dropping it. The WR can do multi day touring anywhere except the rough stuff. It's super smooth and has good power at higher revs. If you need lots of power do not get a 250, but if you want a fun all around bike that needs very little maintenance, the WR250R is top of the class. For me, fun is making it home in one piece and never having to pickup my battered bike, yet enjoying curvy paved roads and some gnarly trails as well.
    So if you enjoy thrashing your bike on really rough stuff, get an old beater DR400. If you want all around riding, go anywhere but go safely, get a WR250R. Heck get one of each.

      +eveRide ADV Hey Everide, I'm selling my VStrom to purchase a much lighter Dualsport. These two are the front runners. However I have very short Hobbit legs. Bikes like The CRF250L and the KLX250S feel really comfortable but these two feel uncomfortably tall. Would you recommend lowering one of these or taking the power hit and going for the Honda/Kawasaki? I do want that extra power though... Hmm

      +Jimmy W my wife and I both ride WRs. I'm 5'9'' she is 5'4" we both lowered the bikes enough to be very comfortable riding the tricky stuff. FYI shaving down the stock seat's foam was the easiest and most cost effective way to lower the bikes height ✌️ cheers

    Hi Tyler. Great comparison. I have a 2015 R1200GSA and love it. Goes great on the road and is awesome on gravel roads but.......way too heavy and expensive when you drop it - and you will. As a result I have been looking for a small displacement bike that I can ride from my garage to the trails/dirt roads and have settled on the WR250R. Your comparison was great as were others I've watched (there are some great vids from MAD TV and adventure OZ - which is something coming from me as I'm a kiwi and we have a somewhat competitive nature when it comes to our Australian cousins). I've had a DR650 and didn't want a bike as large although I found it a great bike too. When it came down to it I really wanted a 250 and the WR was the best I could find. Almost went with the DRZ but the more modern package was what I was looking for. I have a bike with 125 hp so 28 hp from the WR will be fine. With an air box mod and GYTR muffler it should have a little more power as well. Some would say just buy the DRZ if you're trying for more power than 28 hp but another factor was build quality which seemed better on the WR. Putting on long range fuel tank as well which in NZ is necessary for the longer back road trips. Just my thoughts. As you say they are both great bikes and in the long run you have to pick one. Keep up the good work.

    WOW! Thank you for the review. You reaffirmed my instinct of these two bikes by (biasly) choosing the DRZ. Also with a little clarity of the WR-"F" model needing more maintenance. My mind is made up to replace my 2008 modded out KLR for the DRZ (as you said I love how my KLR stays planted and I think the DRZ will continue that expectation). The ONLY thing that's still pulling me is the XR400 (which are hard to find).

    Great review. Very well done. I like that your comparison was "real world" riding. Not all drag races and spec sheets. Fun thing about these bikes, is that there is no perfect one. Just the perfect one or ones for you......today. I'm still looking forward to the day Suzuki makes a true upgrade/replacement for the DR-Z.

    As always a great video well put together. The only complent I would say is I am sorry That I am only 5'2" and find these bikes just to big.     Great job on the comparison. But in the end all that matters is as long as it will get you out on the trails. It doesn't have to be fast or handle great to have a good time.

    I'm looking at getting back into riding. I'll be 59 in a month, looking for a smaller dual sport after owning (and having to sell) an '05 KTM 950 ADV and an '07 KTM 200 XC-W. Moved from Illinois to Nevada. This video took my subconscious thoughts about both bikes and put them into words and onto video. It's a DRZ for me! Thank you for this video!

      LanceKTM950 I’m 55 , hadn’t ridden dirt bikes since I was in my teens. Recently had an opportunity to ride a couple again and it rekindled my spirit! I’m looking at the DRZ400S, local commuter, dirt roads and two tracks , I think it’s a great choice !

    excellent review! looks like it took much to produce and is highly appreciated for doing all this for the public to see!
    one thing, in more than a few times the music overshadows the voice-over in a way that it was hard to follow the words so please take into account.. I at least hope you would.. I say that as a sound engineer :) respect guys!!!

    I rode both bikes. I found the DRZ400 to be very cumbersome to drive in the woods. It feels heavy and unmanageable. The suspension is obsolete. The WR250r felt much more at home in the woods to me. It was easy to throw around. I could ride faster and it didn't tire me out. Much better suspension on the WR as well.

      +Bryan Murphy I think you're absolutely right. Most of my riding is done out here in the desert where the power is put to good use... I think that if the trails were tighter out here I'd prefer the handling of the WR a lot more.

      off road = wr 250 ,stunt riding on road = drz sm 400 , to be frank you dont need much speed off road , light weight is the key

    I don't know about the "cheap used DRZ" thing. In my area, used ones are fairly rare, and they generally cost enough that I would prefer to buy new. Of course, it's pretty much the same for the WR. I've actually been looking at a new KLX250. It would be great to be able to do back to back real world demo rides on them rather than just a few miles on pavement. I guess that's not going to happen, and I already have a cruiser and a sportbike, so it might be some time before I pull the trigger on a dual sport. I'll be keeping my eyes open for deals, and am not ruling out a used DRZ.

      I bought a new KLX250s with a little bit of modding I cut my dirt bike teeth with that in my 40s and kept at it until I got really power hungry and then upgraded to a KTM450EXC

    Great vid as always. I just bought my first "dual sport" bike and did my first green lane on it. It was exceptional! Abosultely loved it! Fantic E Casa 250! 28hp and 103kgs.

    Beautiful shots, makes me miss colorado. I took my 100% bone stock wr250r up pikes peak last summer and did not feel any power loss. I never rode a drz400 but skipped it because I hate a carburetor, that's all we had a when I was a kid. The only other bike I considered was a KTM 690 enduro R but our only NE ohio KTM dealer is a mom and pops dealer where turn around time can be several weeks, just to get a new bike prepped was two weeks. I love my wr250r and just put 3k in mods, power commander + full FMF exhaust, 3 gal tank, LED, no toil air filter, removed AIS and servo, heated grips, hand-guards, new tires, heavy duty inner tubes and come other stuff.

      cpittmx1 She got snippy with me when I asked to pay extra to get my bike faster. Also, pissed me of is they go on vacation in the winter and shut down their KTM shop.

    Great video! I've got a 2015 DRZ 400 S and love it. I've only done a 3x3 mod and changed the jets in the carb, but so far that's been plenty of up grade to get that baby going as fast as I wanted. Still would love to put a after market exhaust (for mainly sound reason) to give it a little more pop. I was looking to get a 250 for weight reasons, but now watching this and finding out it only has 25 lbs. less than my DR, I'm not going to waste the money. If your able to, you should do a test ride on the new Husqvarna 701! Now that would be an awesome bike to afford one day! Keep it up bud!

    Fantastic cinematography and visuals as usual eveRide, lovely to watch - can I put a vote in for the Honda CRF250L? Strikes me it's a similar sort of machine (although I know very little about dirt bikes) but I do love my CRF, it takes me anywhere, always starts, is frugal, lightweight, cheap to buy, road legal, reliable and fun......what more does a chap need??? Great video as ever - keep up the good work my friend!

      +TheMissendenFlyer CRF250L is good on fuel and cheap to buy, that's about it. If you think the WR is underpowered then the CRF250L is a slug. It's heavier than a DR650 also.

      +tosgem ...well it's great as a first bike for an off road "novice" (me) - add an FMF pipe and she really doesn't feel underpowered, I love mine ....just putting a vote in for another dual-sport manufacturer to balance things up a bit :0)

    This was very helpful. right now I'm trying to figure out what dual sport I want. I have an FZ-07 for the street so street riding I could care less about its mostly so I don't have to buy truck to get to the trails and it's better for exploring if the bike is road legal. I was leaning towards the WR250R but now I'm seriously thinking about the DRZ 400.

    Where's the rest of the multi-state trip? I see clips of it here and there in the videos. I really enjoy watching all the videos of the bikes bouncing around getting some air. Its my escape from work when I cant escape from work.

    I'm on a budget and I can only have 1 bike. The answer is the DRZ, hands down. Light enough to ride rough offroad and powerful enough for the highway, it's perfect.

      @Jeff Crouch Got rid of the horrible DRZ as quick as I could & bought a KTM500, something you can hit wash outs in with out the bike trying to kill you & with 6 gears just cruises along at 100k hwy speeds without revving its tits off

    Great video. I believe the guys at Suzuki could come out with a win if they put a 6th gear in and maybe bump the displacement up to 450, but keep it mellow so were not servicing it all the time. If they really wanted to put the icing on the cake they could offer it in fuel injection and better suspension.

    the weird part about dual sports is it can be a yz250 with a plate or a gs1200 with knobbies. peoples opinions are different cuz they are comparing them to different bikes. i think single cylinder dual sports rule hands down

    Ive owned both, and nothing gets me more fired up than when people argue about which is better. My consensus (having owned one WR and 2 DRZ's now), is that the WR felt a little better offroad and the DRZ felt a little better on road. Now, I actually owned all supermotos, but i would do stupid gardensnake-esque stuff on them so both would get plenty of time offroad too. The WR is nice with its lower weight. 6spd, and EFI, but it simply doesnt feel as planted as the DRZ does on the road. Im WAYYYY more confident on the street on a DRZ than i am on the WR. WR just didnt feel like it gripped as well. Could have been tires too, but Im actually still a slightly bigger fan of the DRZ. If both were the same price, it would be a tossup for me, but the DRZ's coming in at about $1500 less, you can buy a lot of awesome parts with that money saved.

    I really enjoyed this video! I own a 1996 Suzuki DR350, which DOES have that 6th gear, and I love it! I've ridden the DRZ400, and enjoyed it. I will probably get one, eventually, but I will find it difficult to say goodbye to my wonderfully restored DR with it's cushy suspension and gear number 6. Great job!

    If Yamaha made a WR400R it souls cost $8000-$9000. Putting it almost is KTM range. Which would be suicidal to there sales. And only then could it match the DRZ's power. Still far less that a KTM's. The biggest plus for the DRZ is it can be greatly improved both in power and suspension without breaking the bank. You can pick up a older DRZ for + or - $2000. Then if need be, pumper carb, full exhaust, and suspension for around $1000. I'm not talking Ohlins Suspension, but new fork springs and rear spring greatly improve the DRZ for offroad. So for around $3000 you can have a extremely offroad worthy dualsport that weighs around 320lbs and pumps out near 40hp at the rear wheel. That's a WINNER in my book!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the vidio's. Keep them coming.

      Don't know where you can get anything for $2k. 10 year old DRZs go for over $4k, 15 year old ones go for over $3k.

    Ok I've never ridden either of these bikes but have drooled on both. I have the inbetweener a Suzuki DR350SE. While it's not the best bike on either surface it's been the BEST BIKE I"VE EVER OWNED! My DR350 loves whatever I throw at it. It doesn't like 85 mph all day long but neither do I. We pick the nastiest back roads we can find and try to get lost and me and Suzi just love it. I would give my left nut for an Africa Twin but I think honestly small displacement bikes really are more fun! Wring her for all she's worth!!! It's all about the BRRAAAPP!!!
