  • Volkswagens have a lot of problems but the 2.5 engine is a rare jewel. Though it is more workhorse than performer it doesn't suffer from the expensive, stupid failures of the turbo models. If you're looking for a VW that is actually reliable (gasp!) you should check them out. This brief look at our Sportwagen explains the common failure items we've dealt with.
    Update: one of those cheezy wheelcovers flew off and disappeared. Alloys FTW!

    I have a 2011 Golf, 2.5L manual transmission. Best car I've ever had. 150,000 miles runs great. Just changed the vacuum pump seal and oil filter housing has a small leak that is bearable. This car is surprisingly fun to drive despite not being a GTI.

    Thanks for the video. Btw, the VAG and other EU car mfrs call it the PRV or CRV - Pressure/Crankcase Regulating Valve - works the same as the PCV. The PCV is more common to the B3 NA car mfrs.

    I replaced my vacuum pump O-ring seal recently after doing a lot of research. I'm happy to say that removing the battery gives complete access to this plate after removing the air intake boots and engine cover. I used 1/4" drive extensions with a socket which holds the T25 Torx head bit. I was able to slide this set up underneath the gear shift selector rod on my automatic transmission with no problem. IDefinitely keep a thin telescopic pencil style magnet next to the screws as you remove them so you don't drop them. Also, place a rag underneath the plate BEFORE you remove it to minimize the oil spill (Ask me how I know this.) Afterwards, I sprayed the old oil residue off the area so I could see if I succeeded in stopping the leak. It worked. I hope this helps someone.

    I have a 2012 Jetta with the 2.5L & the 09g aisin tranny, luckily not the DSG, with 150K & the engine runs great. The only issue ive had is the stupid vacuum pump seal & emission/evap crap.

      I have a 2014 model 2.5 mk6 which is an auto and after some time in traffic it shakes the cabin when increasing its rpm slowly from 2to3 gear , and after sometime it shows the 🔧 at the section where writes PRND
      After i turn the car off and on again it removes the 🔧
      I have checked it for tranmission issues with computer and it doesnt show any error on the tranmission
      It shows only this P0106 (manifold pressure bar )and P2096 (poor catalist fuel trim)
      Do you think this two are related to the transmission? And in your opinion what should i do?

    OK, I just replaced my valve cover with an OEM one that has the PCV valve built in and it turned out to be the right decision after all. My new-to-me 2008 Rabbit 2.5 has 147K miles on it and it runs great, burns no oil and has no issues. However, when I pulled the coils I found oil had leaked on them and also on top of the plugs due to the center gasket leaking. When I pulled the plugs (I planned to replace the coils and plugs "while I was at it".) I found them to be clean and the correct color, so no harm done. This tells me the valve cover gasket has a limited life. I'm glad I made the right choice which is not usually I do. Maybe I should have bought a raffle ticket, too.

      You were supposed to buy the cheaper aftermarket valve cover that completely deletes the pcv and gets rid of any potential problems

    • @wandameadows5736

      You can buy an after market metal gasket cover but ive only seem 1 after market manufacture making them. I hope some more companies do this because a good metal cover would really help. Also the intake is plastic. All this emissions crap has really caused a lot of problem's. They no longer care about longevity.

    On the unbelievably stupid oil filter cartridge housing design which is a super PITA, it is worth the money spent on the "oil filter cartridge housing drain tool" so you can drain the oil, before you change the filter. I tried not using it once. Even though I had a drain pan underneath the cartridge housing, there was so much oil that it came out like a tidal wave and I looked like a speckled puppy from head to shoulders. I'm glad I was wearing glasses or I would have been blinded.
    I haven't seen an oil filter cartridge system since my 1962 MG. What was VW thinking?

    I took my car to a close mechanic of mine for a very quick inspection and he said my leak seems to be a rear main seal leak, and that i should take it to a german mechanic since they are somewhat better at leaks like this. I really hope it is just a vacuum pump leak, but i also have that other leak from the oil filter. Would you think it would be a very expenive fix for both? I am taking it to a very well known VW shop in my city and they work on 2.5s every day so hopefully they can easily fix them.

    • @mongrelmotorsports
      @mongrelmotorsports  2 года назад

      The vac pump shouldn't cost much if they know not to pull the transmission, though I expect they'll just want to put a complete new pump in. The oil filter housing is a very labor intensive job because the entire front of the car has to come off.

    Been looking for a 2.5 Jetta for a while now, the used car market is really bad as a buyer right now. My main car is a mk7 gti stage 1 but the miles are racking up, need a replacement daily as a second car. I see them go for between 3k-6k in so cal area. Only gonna get a Manuel one. My shop said these engines are pretty bullet proof. Once I find one just gonna make it sound good and buy coilovers. Is it a new 2.5 engine after 2007? Seems like the engine power went up 20 hp.

      An oil filter wrench that fits the bottom correctly and a torque wrench.

    I do not like the timing chain design on rear of engine. And $1500 price of repair. I have the 5 speed manual so that is good. I am still on original timing chain, and the fact only 28 percent of main gear is in contact with chain . It runs well at 149,000 miles. The heater is very inadequate when around 0 degrees Fahrenheit the windows fog bad.

    • @mongrelmotorsports
      @mongrelmotorsports  3 года назад +3

      Timing chain 'should' last forever. We haven't noticed the heater being terrible. We have had trouble with the a/c leaking down. Heavily fogging windows mean you are getting moisture inside somehow.

      @@xx_ironman77_xx1 Germans have always made reliable engines. Its all depended on the leadership in Germany or any country for that matter & there stated missions in engineering that's been the set back. If it wasn't for the emission's crap all engines would be more reliable. America owes Germany so much credit for all the technology they acquired after 1945 from German Engineering. Like I said though it seems like everyone is devolving in the Car Engineering Field because of the climate change scam. As for the VW 2.5L I have one in a 2012 Jetta SE & the only issues ive had is with the emissions crap. Its much better than to tiny 4 cylinder engines that's designed for low carbon emission & better gas mileage. Reliability to me means longevity, not emission output & MPG.
