I'm just a guy in Kansas playing around in his garage. Come along in my adventures riding, racing, modifying and repairing my small fleet of unusual misfits.
#review #VW
The best part about the 2.5 5cyl is that it's one of if not the most reliable motor VW has built. I've seen plenty with 300k miles running fine.
Absolutely I sale parts at a junk yard I got plenty of 2.5s in good running condition and zero 2.0T or 1.8T in running condition
Never get tired of that 5 cyl. sound
I definitely love the 2.5 5cyl. Pretty reliable with basic maintenance
“Turn signal stalk doesn’t feel as good as a bmw” had to laugh at that one. Does anyone know how a bmw turn signal stalk even feel like?
TURGID GERMAN SIGNALS
Broken
Honestly they’re quite excellent. Which is ironic because few of us use them.
big, clunky, and sometimes fussy
@@alexp6016it’s a play on words because bmw’s don’t use turn signals
You are correct, my 5 cylinder doesn’t sound nearly that good 😂
Also, now we all know Jake’s inseam size!
well, your Volvo does have an exhaust 😂
But he doesn't reveal boxer, briefs or boxer briefs LOL
The things we learn on you tube, Jakes inseam measurement & the fact that you wear tighty whities!!! Good Night Nurse!!! 😮
I feel Jake's pain. I'm 5' 7" with a 30 inch inseam. Hence why I call my profile pic on here "when a Hobbit works on his truck."
Glad to help, Jake! I had a lot of fun on this trip, and the supercut of exhaust sounds is peak
Hey, by any chance did you buy this car from DriveTown in Houston? I think I was going to buy this exact one
@@jdm_pixel I bought this car from a good friend, however, do recommend
As someone from germany, hearing the words Golf Basemodel and 2.5 in the same sentence is amazing, because over here we not only didn't even get the Fivecylinder anymore in the MK6 (only options over here where diferent variations of fourbangers) but the Base model MK6 over here either had a wheezy 1.4 N/A engine with a "mighty" 80 HP and a whooping 97 ft-lb of tourqe, or the not much better 1.6 N/A with 102 HP and 109 ft-lb. After 2010 these got replaced by a smaller 1.2 Turbo. I guess our Replacement for the 2.5 would be the 1.4 TSI twincharger that had both, a Turbo and a Supercharger and had a boatload of problems due to twincharging beeing something new for VW. Most of these didn't even reach 60k miles before having catastrophical engine failures.
I was about to say this wouldn't be the base model in Europe. I think we get mostly the same cars from VW here in Norway as you get in Germany, and as you say the base models have tiny engines. Even tiny diesels...
It would probably be a good business bringing Mk6 2.5 5s back to Deutschland. I have one and it’s amazing how low revving it is, I baby it and can drive all day and never go above 1800 rpm while cruising at 80 on the highway. Occasionally I’ll do an Italian tune up and it sounds amazing for an entry level daily driver.
I’ve read in Europe it’s used in vans, it feels like it’s barely breaking a sweat pulling the base golf around. They also used the 2.5 in Jetta’s and Beatles in the USA. It’s easy to spot one because of the duel/twin exhaust pipes on the drivers side. My car has the 6 speed auto, my sister bought it new and when my brother in law was going to trade it in for his Ford F150 last year I bought it from them as a second car.
Seem real car guys are swinging back from the crazy HP over the top tec cars to the practical just the right amount of power and balance cars. You can have more fun in a car like that. Getting every bit out of the car and keeping it under 80mph. I have.
I just got one recently and the best part is that a basic tune gave that extra power that is missing and completely eliminated rev hang! So much fun to drive now plus that noise 🔊🔊
The '07 Rabbit got me into VW ownership. The 2.5 was always super reliable for me
Jake, you have a knack for car reviews.
I love my Mk6 Golf 2.5L!! I added an AFE cold air intake to go with the ECS catback and I love the sound 🔥 My enthusiast friends are always impressed with it haha. Also, coilovers made a huge difference in handling 👌🏼
how is the ecs catback i just did a afe CAI not too long ago but I'm looking for more noise did you get the ecs catback valves opened or closed by chance?
This was really very good, slow car fast makes a perfect daily and you summed that up excellently!
I have a Jetta Sportwagen with the same 2.5. Love the motor and the sound it makes, and it has given me no issues with 130k+ miles. Just wish mine was a manual
Same here but I chose it for the long commute & wasn’t going to be dancing on pedals in bumper to bumper traffic. I plan on doing a dsg swap & turbo. 😎
@@jboesz6569 with dsg and boost you basically got a fwd VW badged group B Quattro. Don't forget to add a limited slip.
*Spits Mountain Dew all over his computer screens LOL at Jakes "head comment" Why we love you. No filter, no forethought. Great video
My mother had a 2011 version of this brand new, with automatic. Very comfortable seats. Fantastic seat heaters. Engine was a little course but certainly quite enough power. Interior was very good. For some reason the driver information center kept randomly switching to German.
I have a 2.5 With the 5 speed, muffler delete, and race land coils and I love it so much
Add a link for your videos of your car bro on here
Muffler delete and Racelands lol.. poor car.
Nice simple but effective mod list, next thing it needs is a tune to fix the rev hang and wake up the top end
Great review Jake!! 👍👍
This so reminds me of my MK3 I drove in college. I loved that car. It’s like nothing has changed with the stock Golf in 24 years.
I remember when many on the mk6 forums were debating whether the 2.5 was half a lambo v10. Lol
Great video, Jake!
Thats a pretty good deal! I got my mk3 5spd focus for like 6k and I'm pretty happy with it for similar reasons. Fun to shift, makes all the right noises and not fast enough to get me in any serious trouble lmfao
I have a 2012 2.5 golf manual, favorite car i have owned. You have to get the ums tune, it gets rid of the rev lag and pushes the redline 6k to 7200, requires 91 octane and is around 400$. I also have a techtonics cat back stainless steel exhaust for 700$ both upgrades were worth ever penny. Great video
Hello , it’s called the UMS tune?
And where in the maps on the tune do I locate the rev hang?
I have the Ingen CAI and the Awe Touring exhaust on my MK6 2.5 manual.
Can you send a link of your sound bite of those mods. Have the same car 2.5 base, Ingen CAI, AWE Touring exhaust.
Wanna do the tune and resonator delete.
Nah man IE TUNE. The way to go
@@gottawatch1932 sorry i didn't see this until now, its called united motor sports, they only do tunes for naturally aspirated vw engines.
Excellent review, and highly entertaining.
I love my 2.5. It's a work in progress. I run a touring series magnaflow catback exhaust, and it sounds amazing.
Really enjoying your videos!
I love the way you can drive the automatic like a Manuel and with the IE tune its a beast.
I would love a Jake series where he just reviews cars and raves about all the legroom!
thanks Jake, love the R32 golf think v6 AWD
Jake, you forgot to mention this two-door model MK6 Golf is ideal for tall people; the doors are longer which makes getting in and out a breeze! The new MK8 is only offered with the smaller four doors which are cumbersome for tall people.
got a jetta 2.5 5cyl, same engine. I think it's pretty much the same although the longer body makes it not too good for cornering... but what the heck it's fun. Thanks for doing this video!
I've got a 2014 Mk6 as a daily driver... I love it. 👍
Love that hatch handle.
The MK5 5 speed is much closer ratio than the early mk6 2.5 golf. Part of the reason why the Mk6 gets better fuel economy.
I have a Mk5 Rabbit 2006 which has the most aggressively geared 2.5 cars.
I have a Eurojet catback and can confirm that it sounds amazing and exotic. Baby Lambo.
I payed 3150 for one 3 weeks ago, I got lots of room in the budget for mods. I got a set of rotiforms and raceland coilovers on the way. I’m gonna stage 2 ie tune it, get exhaust and maybe 2 step and call it a day.
Ive got a friend with one of these with over 400k kilometres on the dash. Still runs like a dream
Finally the I5 getting some love!
I don’t know if you get it in the USA but I’ve inherited a 1999 MkIV V5 Golf for free in 2.3 flavour which I guess is a similar engine (150 &170 bhp depending on year) and mechanically these things go on forever.
My one hadn’t been serviced or washed in 7 years before I got my hands on it and apart from a service and bushes I’ve not had to spend a penny on it.
Over here a V5 is one step up from the GTi and most come with lots of options so it’s basically one down from the R32.
The 5 cylinder warble is very addictive and knocking it down a cog will see it going from 30mpg to 16mpg and I think it’s only Achilles heel is the timing chain guides but mine seem okay.
Downshifts in 1 or 3 are the best, they give you way more instant torque than 2 or 4. Also that first gear can go up to almost 70 which is y I downshift in 1 for small pulls on small streets.
Annnd the one I was watching on Atotempest...SOLD. dammit, Thanks a lot Jake.
I have the 2010 model with some bolt ons and tune. Only mk6 year with shorter gearing. Fun car to wring out and listen to.
Just bought an 08 rabbit 2 door five speed with 180000km and it’s like showroom quality and I’m so excited to get a proper cai and a catback
Headliner does go after a few years... but if you get a replacement it is not THAT much of a pain to install... and really makes the car a lot nicer. :)
I love your humor!!!
Also, thanks for the explanation of the exhaust. I would love to figure out how to get a nice harmony out of my T cam Volvo B230FT
Jake you make that Golf look like a limo 😆
The 2.5 is a great engine, especially the later revision. It’s great right up till you have to do the timing set.
You should never have to replace the timing chain unless you neglect oil changes.... It's for the life of the vehicle. I've seen 07ks over 300k miles with stock internals with 10k mile factory recommend oil changes. I've also seen 07ks with 10psi of boost added to stock internal 07k with over 200k miles. And that's even when the turbo was added at around 100k miles.
Man that pre pandemic pricing is crazy. People are asking for 10k+ for a base model manual. I love this engine, but idk if I love it enough for that price over other things in it's price range
You're a pretty good car reviewer . You deserve more subs
I think you've really hit your stride with reviewing cars, the commentary is classic TopGear . America's 'Clarkson' is born! Just not as tall... or as Yorkshire-sounding...
Successful video! It makes me think that a 7-10 year old VW is a sensible idea & actually keep a sleepy eye out for one.
🙂
With that hat, definitely got that Palos look going. 💯
I just had a muffler delete done on my 2.5 and added a dual pipe exhaust at the end and it definitely sounds like the 5.2L Lamborghini V10. I was surprised at first. Just gonna add a cold air intake last for power mods.
Once you add the cold air intake on you can tune it at that point.
@@gottawatch1932 Honestly I gotta find more info on cold air intakes, this will be my first car I’m getting a custom air intake on. I heard you can tune them but now sure how or what should be “tuned”.
I own one of these with the same model year and it's so good. I'm sorry to my Golfie for undervaluing it at times
sounds brilliant
I get 36 mpg and i got a 3in lift kit on my jetta, love my 3rd peddle.
Its good to see a Kansas RUclipsr not holding the camera whilst driving.😉
Sounds great, we don't get these in Europe you have to get a fire breathing RS3 Audi to get a 5 cylinder soundtrack here
I love three door GTIs!
Yes, and it's sad to hear the new MK8 Golf is only offered with four doors and not two.
I know alot of people swap out those base seats for the mk6 gti seats since they have more aggressive bolstering
The 2010,11 have a wide ratio 5 speed transmission. 2012, 13 got a closer (not close) ratio 5 speed transmission, actually it’s the same ratios in the mk5 Rabbit 2.5. They’re were more fun with those ratios.
This is one of the videos that convinced me to buy mine and I can't recommend one more, just make sure you find one that's been taken care of, unlike me.
we mod my friends 2.5 rabbit and it’s so sick, we also hydro locked it and it survived
"pre-pandemic pricing" yeah... it's nuts. Our Durango with the 4.7 just dropped a valve seat (common problem), so I went looking for something to replace it with. Couldn't find anything reasonable, so I'm just going to get a reman and drop it in the truck. Even those are all like 4 weeks out though due to supply chain problems getting the parts to get the reman done. Jasper is the only place with engines in stock but they just cost so much...
I have a 2014 model 2.5 mk6 which is an auto and after some time in traffic it shakes the cabin when increasing its rpm slowly from 2to3 gear , and after sometime it shows the 🔧 at the section where writes PRND
After i turn the car off and on again it removes the 🔧
I have checked it for tranmission issues with computer and it doesnt show any error on the tranmission
It shows only this P0106 and P2096
Do you think this two are related to the transmission? And in your opinion what should i do?
7:27 have to tell you it is fast for regular European standards!
i blame the rev hang for the lack of life on my clutch, letting it out early in frustration is just the game with this car
I'm up to 111k now, and this car has taught like half a dozen people to drive stick, and the original clutch is going strong
@2:28 I felt that lol
The head is similar! The passenger side v10 exhaust manifold bolts on
That’s so much better than my Mark I 1977 Rabbit 4 speed manual and 97 horsepower! We didn’t call them by any Marks of course, because who knew how successful the line would become, especially with it’s horrible quality. It was Volkswagen’s first liquid cooled car, except for an even worse 1976 Passat (name?)
I worked at a VW dealership in 1977 and sold them new. I had a burgundy Champagne Edition as my demo. Loved it. We also sold VW Dashers but you never see those anymore. What up wit dat?
Had those wheels on my ‘12 Golf R!
That's what they're off of!
@@brycemeng what's these wheels size ? 17 or 18?
What exhaust did you get? Sounds mint
Here in Canada we have the Rabbit with that same 5 cylinder
The US and Canada got a mk5 Rabbit 2.5 06-09 and they also got the mk6 Golf 2.5 10-14.
I just recently got a mk6 and idk I think I miss my mk4 1.8t 😒😂
they aren't fast but they are not slow for their class
with a couple bolt-ons, you can hit over 200 hp
I've never seen a manual Golf with any options. I don't know if it's that the people that buy them can't afford options, or that the people that buy them want to just be bland. I personally think that people that buy manuals always think they are going to race the car all the time. The only Golf's I've seen with options are automatics. Might be against your religion but VW has some nice ventilated seats, really good navigation and until they hit 100k, pretty reliable.
The last great engine that VW made, the 07K
Jake's version of Other People's Cars!
Is it an Eonon head unit? Or is it an OEM VW unit? I need to find one!
Texas MK6? Gray? under $5k??? I think I was going to buy THIS EXACT GOLF in the video at one point, I didn't have the money for it yet though
Ive had my 2013 highline 2.5 for about 3 years now. Its FBO, dyno tuned, 6 speed swapped, stripped interior. I love it. I have a 2013 GLI as a daily which is bone stock (much faster then the golf) but the golf is still so much more fun to drive on the track
Can you please tell me about the exhaust setup?
Still waiting for my friend in Austin to sell me his 2.5L Golf...
I've been through a ton of cars and by far my favorite cheap commuter is a 2011 and up scion tc. The seat bolstering is perfect, it's a 6 speed, reliable, plenty of power for a 4 cylinder, has a great stock exhaust note, great handling, and decent gas mileage. The one con is it also has atrocious rev hang.
I currently own a 2.5 VW and I don’t know if I can ever go back to an in-line 4cyl. The 4 pot just doesn’t sound all that great. I’ve had lots of them in the past with nice cat backs, but the 2.5 has ruined 4cyl’s for me. 😭
FYI. There are no 2.5 mk6 golf 4 door manuals in the US. Unless you swap it.
There are no manual 2.5 mk6 golf for 2014.
Whats this about the radio upgrade again? Tell me more!
wait what exhaust is that I need it for my mk6 lmao
Dude I have a 2.5l Passat and need to know the exhaust setup on that thing sounds sick
Removed the resonator and muffler and replaced with a 2.5"(?) straight pipe
Also I feel like this mod would not be suited to an auto car, as it makes the entire world hear how slow the transmission is.
@@brycemeng Yeah... didnt even think about that
Shop around and you can find one of these as a wagon with a manual.
Twisties ? Hi Scotty !
I wonder what they serve at Spaghetti Works.
Side to side throw will have you hitting first when you mean to hit 3rd 😵💫
Have one of them 2009 2.5 mk5 170 000 km. Use 8.5-9.5 city/ highway no traffic. I don’t think you can get 7 l anywhere.
Where do I find that radio🤔
I’m 5’ 7” & I have a longer torso than my Dad who is 6’ 2”.
Wonder whats the exhaust on that one
Cat back
Can I get some details on the exhaust setup. Been searching for hours and can’t find a muffler and resonator delete system anywhere
Straight Pipe is what it is…I have mine
@@2kgaming225 Did you keep the resonator?
@@nitrox28 take it off, chop everything off
I like these cars a lot but the GTI version is a big upgrade if you like better braking, handling, and acceleration. Thanks for the review.
Slow cars driven fast are often more fun than fast cars driven slow
Yes , the Golf 2.5 manual is a momentum car, you have to build it to get going fast, and it makes you work for your speed. Unlike my previous turbo BMWS where you just stomp the gas and go.
Total fan now after a year of ownership with my golf.
@@gottawatch1932 what do you think you should do to make it fast ? I haven't done anything to mine and it is fast . What have you done to yours to make it more faster ?
Everyone is about 2.5 cylinder.
Nobody’s about the third pedal 😂
