- Take a spin in my own personal Golf S, this is a pretty basic car but still a lot of fun to drive I find.
The USB charger I talked about can be found here

Just imagine seeing a guy wearing that hat blast past you at 135 mph in a Golf of all things in the early morning. Hey, you've got to do what you've got to do, but I literally laughed out loud! Thanks for the video, Nick! Always enjoy them!
I think that the MK6 looks better then the MK7!
I think so too
Same in the standard models but GTD GTI and R MK7/7.5 models look better than the MK6
Love my little MK6
Wow,the Golf model lineup really differs from what`s offered in Europe. A 5 cyl. 2.5 base model..... Here the base model has a 1.2 turbo or something i think, and here you hardly ever see a Jetta
Got the exact same car (but Silver color) for the same reason ! Cheap, undercover, economical, confortable, nice options.
Still have our Mark VI! it's a kind of "forever car', compared to everything today it's not overly complicated but it has been reliable and it was really well made for it's time and still puts current car refinement and usability to shame. Still on the look out for a RCD330 radio uopgrade for ours.
I've driven my friends 2.0 GT TDI golf mk5 and it's a lot of fun, around 170bhp standard also. The first car I ever drove was my dads mk5 1.6 FSI Golf, so I've always liked them for that reason, they're very smooth and comfortable.
Appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos! They are always very informative and enjoyable due to your sense of humor. love the hat, btw
Best selling car in germany and I think for all the right reasons. My personal favourite Mk6 was the GTD which is the fastest TDI with some GTI gear on it. i even filmed a review of one way back in 2010...too bad you don't get the 1series hatch in the states. I like that even more :)
Thanks Guido! I think we might be getting the GTD at last over here! Agree that is the best of all worlds.
MkVI GTD has one very big problem... understeer! I'm curious how the MkVII GTD is in that it now has the electronic LSD, which should make it a lot nicer to drive. But yes... I potential, the GTD definitely has best of both worlds.
Suzanne Feyens
True, I even have a scene in that old review I filmed where it can be seen. But I love the ( fake ) induction sound in that car. Wish my 1 series had that :=)
+TheGetawayer I have a friend who has a 116i hatch here in the US! Imported from Scotland, RHD, sweet little car!
Great review Nick!
Thanks Matt!
Nick, I just picked up a 2012 Passat with the same engine and transmission. I absolutely love it! In everyday driving I don't notice the power deficit compared to other cars I've owned and the inline-5 makes a cool noise. The Golf would have been cool but the dealer didn't have one. Wish you many happy miles with your Golf.
Nick, make sure you get a Manual on your next Golf. If you were still deciding on getting a Golf R or GTI, get the GTI with performance pack and maunal. That version is the most fun to drive. And if you needed to be practical, the TDI has more torque than the TSI and also has better economy.
100% with you, MT it will be. Really want the performance pack GTI if I can find one that is the right price.
in my opinion, the 5-cylinder engines are the best. They have as you explained a wider torque range, and (for me) the most important thing, the sound. I think a 5-cylinder engine is the best sounding engine in the world. Very nice review by the way!
Have a MK6 2.5 manual myself, fantastic little car with tons of head room and driver adjustability options. Every time I try out other cars I am severely disappointed by the cramped cabin feeling...for example the new mustang 5.0 had barely any steering adjustment vertically. Great review, I also have a GTI and think you would appreciate all of the features that much more . Now I just need to work on getting an M4
I've been driving a 2012 Golf TDI for a couple of months now. Bought it with 45k. The good: 40mpg average(600 miles on a 14 gallon tank), nice torque off the line, excellent balance between handling and ride quality, you push through a tight corner and it just grips and turns with no drama, hutch is convenient, build quality us great throughout, it's quiet inside. The bad: at low speeds the dsg is jerky, there's an annoying rattle deep inside the dash in the glove box area during acceleration, fuel door flap never locks, I'm 6' tall/ 175lbs but the front seat feels too small (left bolster is always digging into my thigh), maintenance is expensive, the emissions scandal/ reduced resale value. Overall, it's a great car, but not the VW has been caught, it's tipped the scales for me in favor of a simpler/ cheaper car. If I could go back, I would have taken a 1.8tsi jetta with a stick for $4k less.
Nick you have a dirty mind VAG stands for Volkswagen Audi Group
Iam from germany, and even if the 5 banger is old and not exacly designed to save polarbears, iam jealous for the unique sound. I wish they would atleast offered this engine here in europe. Not everybody want a turbo 4..
Agreed
Hatchbacks are great. They are so usefull. You really can fit so much stuff in it. My sister even managed to get her 2,2m christmas tree in a VW Polo this year. Happy Holidays !
hey Nick!
In which video program is it the most comfortable to switch the view from different cameras? In your videos it is done really smoothly:) I hope you get my point!
I would really like to see a whole new video explaining in which program you prepare your videos, what does take to do that, how you make voiceover etc.
Greetings from Poland my friend:)
Can I 2nd this request too please Nick? I'm an Avid Media Composer 6.5 user, and its great, but still interested to know your choice. Btw, a GTI V driver, and its great, check out the GTI VII pp even if its just a test drive, I'm sure you'll love it.
+1. Would be interesting to see a behind the scenes of your editing/voice over setup Nick.
Great review Nick!
As you know I have a Mark VI TDI alongside the M4. Just hit 70k miles and not a murmur. Solid car.
Cheers,
Tim
Hey Tim, hope that beautiful M4 is treating well : )
I had a loaded '13 manual 2 door but got rid of it b/c of rev hang and 2 doorness, but regret selling it. Id like to get a 4 door auto next. Nice to know i should barter more for slightly used!! good deal u got
Wow amazing. That is still a car with some good value in it. I am proud of you. I have Mk7 Tsi comfort line trim and love it.
This 5 cyl engine sounds quite good ! Good spec'ed car. Not available in Europe sadly.
Very nice video of a mundane car, didnt think i'd watch it till the end. Even with car reviewers like Harry Medcalf, Chris Harris and others, I still enjoy watching your videos.
Hey Nick, I have a golf as well with a 5 speed manual and I really love the car I totally agree with you, the short wheelbase makes it so much fun to drive, Love your videos, Cheers from Toronto Canada
Thanks for making the Golf video, Nick! Such a fun looking little car. I'd love a GTI.
Glad you enjoyed it my friend!
Nice review - the new Golf R will be awesome, lots of power with AWD.
I agree with u about light cars that are not overpowered are so much fun, hence i have a BRZ. Have u driven one?
VAG= volkswagen audi group. Thanks nick
Nice video again. Love your dogs outtakes, too.
Here in Germany your options only costs what you paid for the Golf - without the car!
This is exactly what I'm looking for!(though going more to a mark vii gti) Looking to get a more practical everyday car ('67 camaro is great but too much stress driving that daily). It is very different but different can be good. Thank you for your review of your golf it has placed a need for one in my life.
entertaining and informative review as always. i realize this was your own car, and don't stop reviewing sports cars, but it's great to have videos of less expensive cars such as this on your channel. as others have requested, i'd like to see you test a new gti.
have to admit that after seeing your last video, i was hoping to see more of your dog clowning around. i guess she can only do so much in the space available but the clips of her enjoying life are appreciated. i also bought a second vehicle based on the needs of my dog....i think he thought it was his doghouse on wheels because the second the door was open, he was in it. thing was that on my days off, i couldn't drive my boxster because he wasn't comfortable in it. (120 lb dog) (yeah, i know it's the ''poor man's porsche"...but i'm a poor man)
again, keep up the good work. i think your videos are so popular because it's like listening to a friend and getting unbiased advice plus the fact that you don't take it all too seriously.
I honestly prefer these owner reviews of not so special cars to those reviews you post of Audis and Mustangs. Much more detailed obviously and not like most other videos on YT.
Thanks Salar
Wow. My mom has one of these and the nav/infotainment just drives me crazy. I don't like the touchscreen, I want to be able to listen to the radio with the screen off, I find the general feel to it to be rather unresponsive (contrary to iDrive and Audi's MMI, which I've recently had the pleasure to test) and pairing phones well was a disaster. I didn't expect you'd be pleased with it. And indeed, they're mighty fine and well-built cars besides.
Its rare to see an S trim with alloys, I can only find S trims with the wheel covers. Must have been a rare find!
Hey nick, Nice video !
You've certainly made a great bargain ! Getting this almost loaded 5 cylinder model for 11.000 euros is unthinkable. For this price we get the 2.0 diesel with 100.000 km on the clock...
Just à thing, your audio threshold seemed à bit low for the interior review, so the sound quality was à bit below your usual quality, but the rest was great !
Keep it on !
Cheers
I just purchased one in white, its a great car!
Hey Nick, love your reviews! Keep up the good work! My parents brought a 2013 mk7 GTI here in NZ and its absolutely brilliant! Im always looking for an excuse to take it for a spin! Im really hoping you either get one or do a review on one as i would like to know what you think.
So your dog was almost dying and you couldn't take the much faster M4.
Good point, at the time I set off she just seemed uncomfortable I did not know it was going to turn into an emergency or yes I would have taken the M4
Thank you. I'm looking at a mark 6 TDI in the next couple of days here.
+Jamie McNeill did you go through with it?
Even though the whole Diesel mess came to light, I still wish I could have. However.. Since the banks would not let me move cars, I really dodged a bullet on this whole mess. So, when VW fixes their cars, I'll get one. Right now, saving like a madman. Which in the long run only helps.
I have a MK6 GTI, such a good overall car. Thanks for the review!
Jealous, I want one now, just an all round awesome car
Nick Murray is jealous of me! I'm flattered :P
But in all honesty, get the MK7 GTI, it's much better than the MK6 (apart from looks IMO)
i think audi is using the 2.5 liter 5 cylinder with turbos, so i dont think the 5 cylinder is completely gone! that could only be in Europe tho im not sure.
If the WRX didn't exist, I would really think about getting one of these, but in GTI trim.
If you can, I think you should get an R8 V10 for your next 'Nice' car, Nick. VW own Audi, so I don't think you'll have the issues you had with the Porsche etc and they're beautiful but actually very practical cars.
But V10 for the supercar status, or V8 just for owning an R8
So Porsche doesnt belong to VW? Wtf are you talking about.
Nice review, I like video quality 720p60 hopefully people will start using this more.
ahh the US, gotta love them, here in the UK (and Europe in general?) I don't think we've had a 2.5 since the MK4 V5(?)... Although we had a MK5 with 170bhp but it was a turbocharged 1.4...
Great review, I love that you speak about nuances that actually no one speaks about! I am thinking about getting Jetta SportWagen! What are your thoughts?
Aleksandr Kuznetsov Get it! More fun to drive than people think and it can hold like 12 dead hookers.
Hey Nick, nice review! I'm not really a volkswagen fan, but that's mainly because of the fanboys that try to force their opinion on to you. There are a lot of them here in the Netherlands. I mean secretly like the golf, but I hate those guys that laugh at your car when they never even drove it, just because they drive the best of the best... the almighty... invincible... superior... vokswagen golf/polo/whatever. I mean, they're good, but they don't make MY heart beat faster when I drive one and I like to drive just for fun.
Anyway, I would love to see you do a full review of the Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ if you can get your hands on one.
Thanks yes I am looking around for a FRS BRZ to review.
Love your videos Nick!
Greetings from Switzerland ;)
Thanks Adrien
Last comment of the day. Great video and you absolutely, positively need to trade in your Golf for a '15 GTI w. perf package. Tui will never forgive you if you don't get it.
This is true. : )
Great video Nick!! I really enjoy your videos! :D
Should I get the Mk6 Golf or the E90 3 Series. They're both for about the same price used...
golf for more reasonable maintenance costs... or bmw if you have enough money
Hi Nick,
Just subscribed - keep up the good work matey!
Undercover Golf, I like that . Porsches and especially BMW's seem to have a reputation for being owned by very arrogant and obnoxious individuals for some reason. Not sure why as they are simply well engineered vehicles that are fun to drive...
I like your Golf it might not be anything special but it's a nice car my old TT had a 5 cylinder
Thanks for the review Nick! What a great little car, I had a '12 TDI myself in the same color, but with a manual and what was known as the "Tech Package" So it had the HID headlights as well as the options yours has. One question though, did you order yours specifically? Or did you find it on a dealer lot somewhere? The only reason I ask is that I've never seen a base Golf equipped like yours, I didn't even know they could be had with Fog-lights, NAV/Sunroof and the 17" wheels.
Just found it at a dealer. They had it listed as a grey two door with no options, some screw up so I took advantage and grabbed it. I really like the look of those wheels (standard on your TDI) I was looking for a TDI just to get the wheels but this one came along and it was perfect. I think the TDI also had the mud flaps mine does not have.
170hp in a golf "you need to work a little bit when overtaking".
You wanna try my 2001 mitsubishi colt with the 1,3l engine? Then you can talk about planning (years) ahead!
No I should not complain, its a really cheap car for a student like myself :)
Albinivik I am up for a drag race!
I'm debating if I should trade in my 2014 corolla S for a 2015/16 GTI autobahn. If you were me would you do that
Tui swimming was gold!
ha ha yes that dog is something else
The 5 cylinder is still available in the Audi TT RS and RS3
True true the turbo version
Yup, nice vid by the way.
Very nice review as usual. I really hope you didn't put your home address under "home" in the navigation system though :)
On the video I select some other random address I had in there.
A friend of mine put in her home address under "home". Got her car stolen. First thing the thief did was swing by her house as he knew she wasn't home :) That'll teach her.
Fantastic review
And the conclusion is: 14K Golf, zero problems. 100K Porsche tons of problems.
Perfect best advice on girl Nick! I'd do the same on a date. Also, the "undercover" reason of owning that car. hahah
Well done.Great review !
Great review Jim!
Thanks Bob!
Hi Nick! Debating buying a used 2013 VW Golf for $7,500 and 87,000 miles. 4 door. Automatic. Clean carfax. What do you think? Thanks!
Nice!!
Well for 13 figures worth it but if only kept at garages for years to come, you know greed is something make you think you are the winner, so they finish the one who looking for unusual things .
Hi Nick, I may have missed it but did you post the name of the company you purchased the USB port from? I have a GTI and think its a neat accessory. Thanks
Yes it is in the description.
Nick Murray Oh yeah. Duh.
How can you call that a base model car, in europe this is like full option car
Love the hat Nick!
Keeping it classy
Why not compact SUV for utility purpose why y choose hatchback. Y don't like SUVs? Just asking.
Do you guys get auto clima in MK6 or just that manual?
You take the Golf when you go out on a date? Nick, I love you man, but WTF?
Always looking to impress with my little blue golf : )
Being 2013 shouldn't it be a mk7?
Is the gear selection towards you to change down a gear?
Um. Mine won't let me listen to the audio?
Hey Nick! Question, how were you able to buy a Golf S with Navigation, foglights, alloy wheels and leather wrapped steering wheel. It honestly looks like a TDI optioned out (which isnt a bad thing). Just started watching your channel, so far LOVE IT
+lukash kowcz This one was just optioned that way for some reason.
I would also like to ask, Im looking at sort of downgrading but at the same time upgrading,I want to get rid of my 2002 BMW 330i because its just a headache to maintain, so my question to you what can I get newer that is a similar car without the expensive maintenance that the BMW comes with but still has the awesome driving characteristics. Also under $10k Im thinking a used Mazda3 but whats your opinion?
oh and forgot to mention something under 100k miles preferably under 90k, also cheaper the better
+The Rusty Scooter under 90k miles lol
Hey Nick what do the two buttons under the tach and speedometer do?
cmartinez1012 Set the clock and reset the trip
5:40 your dog thinks you're insane.
I'm from New England (Boston), I currently have a LeMansBlue 2011 M3 Coupe, a mineral gray M4 Coupe in order, and I'm considering a Golf or a cheap SUV as a second car. I'm also a tech guy, and an immigrant. So... I guess this is the way to go for immigrant tech guys from NE with taste :) (Except Porsche. In US it's middle age crisis car, and I think it's ugly)
I have never seen a LeMansBlue M3 in person, I always wanted to get that color but it came out after I got my M3. It is nice? Send me a photo of it!
Nick Murray A few pics. They are not the best, but I think they show the color ok. I think it's similar to Interlagos blue, just a tad more on the light side. ( My new combo will be M4 MG / SO with everything except CCB.)

Cheers! :)
Gokhan Bas Beautiful color that. I'm looking at an E36 in Avus Blue, and it's very similiar. Maybe a bit lighter.
lol seriously... your dog is sooooo cute
Nick, the other trick you neglected to mention in regards to landing a hot girlfriend is having a hipster beanie like you have. I am sure it is that beanie of yours that got your model girlfriend to fall for you.
Nick, nice hat! :-)
I love it i am so jealous
V8 isnt all that balanced either, I6, f6 and v12's are
can you play music from your phone through bluetooth?
interesting accent. where are you from?
You still have it?
No I gave it to a friend
Nick, aren't the heated seats an option too?
Yess
yes good spotting
It's quite a cute looking car hahah.
When does the //m235i review come?
Some time this week if I have all the footage. I have not checked it yet so there is always a chance of a screw up.
What's your opinion on volvos Nick?
Love Volvos, review of one coming in the next few weeks...
That is a match model, not s model with all that how can it be s?????????
Isnt it a DSG transmision ?
Wedad Hecimovic The TDI, GTI and R come with a DSG, this is a 6-speed auto.
Imad S is correct
What??!! 14 grand? Bargain of the century!
With danish taxes the cheapest golf you can get here is almost $60k
Yep cars are super cheap in the US
Nick Murray
They sure are!
60k kroner (I think thats danish currency) is about 11.6k Canadian dollars...
Tharee MaahthePuddi
Im talking USD....
WOW!! I rewound the tape 3X, THAT IS A KILLER DEAL!
Hey Nick I always wondered, do homeless people understand knock-knock jokes?
PS: GTI with the manual gearbox needs to be apart of this channel.
Dat hat doe
Wait...you got another 911? Do tell...
P. A. Grens No I am talking about my old one
That moment when you ask a more mature guy about what car to buy to impress women and then u realize he's carrying a lipstick in his car... life is confusing.
mowglilp You obviously didn't get the joke... It's a lip balm
Combien stp
60fps?! :D
Yep trying to step all my future videos up to 60fps : )
is it bad that tui swims better than me?
You drive better than her however so lets call it even.
Nick Murray
fair enough :D
