I just finished doing a tuneup on my VW Jetta mk5. It was easier than I thought. $250 at dealer but did it myself and got job satisfaction. You need large slip joint pliers (not the fancy long reach ones) a 3/8 analog torque wrench (not the digital short range one) Bosch plugs (3 times cheaper than the dealer ones) t20 hex bit, dialectic grease, flat head screwdriver. Put grease on engine cover posts and inside ignition coils. Use the flat head screwdriver to gently twist tab on coil until you hear click then gently pull by hand connector on each of the five coils. Use a short zip tie and loop it around head of coil and pull each one. Use torque wrench 21 ft lbs or 252 inch pounds to torque the spark plugs using a deep 3/8 inch socket with a magnet built in it. Then push the connector into the coil until you hear an audible click. Then align into groove and push coil with your thumb finger until you hear thump. I practiced at a salvage yard before doing it in my own car. Easier than I expected. Now my car run smoothly.
I took a leap of faith after researching spark plug install and this video was very helpful. The wire harness latches was VERY difficult to detach from the coils! Nonetheless-Success! Great video

Thank you SO MUCH for this wonderful video, I'd never attempted doing sparks/coils in any vehicle before this, but felt empowered enough to try because you made it seem very accessible. There was no confusion on my end or having to rewind a gazillion times to try and understand what you meant by something, it was straightforward and easy to follow. Thank you! I was scared to take my car to a shop because I thought they’d have me replacing a million things. I sent the video to my son he watched it once , finished the job and my car is running like new again.
Thanks for posting this and the PCV/mass air sensor vid. I replaced all of this on my 2012 without a single hitch, cleared the codes, now it idles and runs better. FWIW, I bought my car with 40k on the clock, and it’s been super reliable.
If you use NGK plugs, they already have a factory coating of proprietary anti-seize on the threads. NGK does NOT recommend using anti-seize on their threads. Also, dielectric grease is insulating and should only be applied to rubber or plastic sealing surfaces and NOT to any metal connecting parts. Yes, it should be used for moisture-proofing but it should not be used between metals where current travels. It also makes inserting or removing the coil boots easier. There is also a special high-temperature dielectric grease available. A little bit goes a very long ways. Just apply a thin film with your finger tips.
I do all the repairs on my families cars and I’m pretty mechanical. We just bought a used Jetta for my daughter and this was a perfect video no matter how much experience you have working on cars.
Thanks for making this video. I currently own a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, but I've always been interested in owning a VW. Before I watched your video I watched a video of someone changing the spark plugs and coils on a 2012 Chevrolet Cruz. The job was so easy and I was discouraged about owning a VW. I thought, "I'll probably have to take the whole engine apart to change the spark plugs and coils on a 2.5 VW." Your video shows me this is not the case and gives me a lot of reassurance about owning a VW. Thanks.

excellent video! Very good pre and post production. thank you for the excellent commentary and audio WITHOUT MUSIC! Going through the necessary tools and shop supplies was great. All the little tricks like connectors, sequence of operations, silicone grease to grommets were perfect, and the cautions were great. Over all a real pro job! My only suggestion/ request would be when dealing with small items like the VAG style connectors an additional close-up shot with brighter lighting, spliced in in slow-mo, would be helpful to newbies to understand how those things work.
You do not really need a magnet to pull the spark plugs from the cylinderhead. You can simply use the coils themselves to pull them out after you unthread them. Just a quick thought
Thanks man.. the lager coil packs and ngk plugs are in.. if you dont have a grabber or long enough needle nose, just use the old coil pack and push it down in the engine block, it will grab the spark plug!
If the coil bushings gets stuck on the plugs could that cause it not to turn over, I pulled the coils out and the rubber stayed on the plug didn’t disconnect anything else and now car won’t start came across this video after and just wanted to ask thank you
Thank you so much for this vid and the step-by-step. I am by no means a car guy, but I knocked this out in my 2012 Passat in no time. Hell, I spent way more time just trying to get that damn hose clamp back on.
Thanks I enjoyed watching the video and helped me do my Golf 2013 which is similar in engine style which is 2.5 engine also. I have a little difficulty in removing the coil for a while and a little pry loosens its grip from the spark plug. I guess a little trick on those wire harness, lift the wire and a lever lift and push it out with a flat screw driver and that will come out, hard but I did it. Thanks again, my mechanic said I can do it, just watch the RUclips.
Major points for the Aprilia in the garage! Of course there's a down side and that is the low volume of your voice, but not fatal. Would have really liked to have gotten info on torquing the plugs but I'm sure I can live without it. Now go ride that bike!
Your correct. I had multiple videos to string together in post and I missed that one. I usually don't record the install unless it's greatly different then removal.

If you drive the car for about 10 minutes to get the engine warmed up, it's much easier to get the cover off. I had to do that to get at the air filter underneath.
Appreciate the video accept it already knew how to do all of this. I was just hoping you included the torque specs on the spark plugs. I have the 2011 Vw Jetta and it’s got 198,000 miles. I think I only changed the spark plugs one time and I can’t remember when I had it done

Good video almost: did not cover spark plug spacing or tightening the spark plugs - how many ft. lbs. used to put them back in? (a pretty important part)
Thank you for making this videos man, I have a 2013 Jetta 2.5 automatic, I want get to some spark plugs for it, they sold me some ZFR6FGP ones I’m not sure if those are right ones. Can you help?
you applied the Dielectric Grease way incorrectly! dont forget that Dielectric Grease is an insulator, so you should AVOID applying it directly on connectors and any metal parts in general. its to be applied on rubber (inside the boot but without touching any metal connectors). you can always apply it very slightly on the outside of the spark plugs (the ceramic portion), but again avoiding any metal part. The way you applied it directly to connectors means, you actually created a barrier/insulator that will make it harder on the connectors to function properly! its going to increase resistance and overheating the wires or lead to misfiring...
Thank you for this video! One question... it appears you unscrewed the spsrk plugs before you removed them but only dropped in the new ones without screwing them in-did i miss something? 17:28
I'm about to do an ignition service on my Passat. Gonna put in new coils and spark plugs. Would you recommend cleaning the plug wells before installing the plugs? Thanks
Just a question the plugs have never been changed on this 2013 Jetta. Is it better to remove them with the block cold / warm or doesn’t it matter. I’m Leary they could snap off ? Thanks JT
My Jetta is a 2.5 the tricky part is disconnecting the harnesses from the ignition coil should I use a flat screwdriver to pry it out or push the tab and pull? Don’t want to break the tab.
What!! You changed them at 70k My 13 jetta has 145k and have not changed mine. I do my own oil changes and better get on this maintenance repair, pronto!! Thanks for tip buddy.
Anyone know if a knock sensor code would come on with the check engine light if the spark plugs have not been changed or does that mean specifically the knock sensor has an issue?
any thoughts on a 2012 VW Jetta SE that drives fine, BUT has stalled when slowing down and when sitting at a light itermittently over the past 2 months maybe 5 times total with daily driving. Also when turning over it cranks fine, but recently same time as it began stalling it may take 2 turns of the key to start her up. this has happened 3 or so times over 2 months as well. I thought maybe fuel pump or relay, but no dash lights come on or error code. 2 mechanics so far have told me they dont know where to look. I was planning on having air filter replaced, and maybe relay then fuel pump if still acting up. Had a tune up 1 year ago, plugs and coils replaced at that time..any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
@@SkyhookStudios it is an automatic, with the option to switch gears manually, if shift is moved to the right you can shift up or down, not a real manual drive
Does anyone know what it mean if I replaced all of the ignition coils and spark plugs but I’m still getting a misfire for the forth cylinder? Should I just replace them again I used aftermarket coils idk if that caused it to not work or not?
This video is very help! Unfortunately my friend didn’t have the patience to watch it thru and broke very 5 of the plastic clips when he tried to unplug the wires from the coil. I was concerned the wires may become loose overtime but He said it would be ok because they didn’t have much wiggle room between the wires and the coil head. Your opinion on this matter please🙏
I agree that the plugs will probably stay in place enough for them to still function. The only issue I have is that modern connectors also have a rubber seal inside of them. It prevents dirt and more importantly moisture. If your car develops a missfire I would look to those plugs first.
@@SkyhookStudios thanks for the reply! I have noticed that the digital display of how many mileages I can still drive with the amount of fuel I have left is off. Does it have anything to do with mess-up my friend did to the coil clip during spark plugs replacement? I am not experiencing any misfires.
Great informative video! I ordered Bosch replacement spark plugs for my 2011 Volkswagon Jetta Sportline. The thread pitch is correct however the total length of the replacement plugs are about 3/16" shorter than the existing plugs. Will a shorter plug work? Please comment when you have a moment. Thanks
Take those Bosche plugs back and get any other brand then Bosche. As far as the length goes, as long as the look up says they are compatible, you should be good.
@@mathewhoran2684 Bosch has tried many times to reinvent the spark plug field. They are famous for using multiple electrodes. In doing so that allows spots for build up from the combustion process. Eventually fauling the plugs out prematurely. In hindsight I should have stated to use only the traditional single electrode regardless of manufacturer of plug. Bosch makes them but most choose the multiple electrode one without knowing. It's the "more is better" thought but not with this one.
Off hand, do you know if prying up the ignition coils, to make detaching the electrical plug, also work on a 2009 2.5L v5 Jetta? The set up looks pretty much the exact same so I hope the 2009 will have as much wiggle room as that looks to be the most difficult part of the process.
Thank you for the video, awesome video extremely helpful. I have a question once the tune up is done, do you need to do any type of scan in the computer or anything related to it.
The trick is to put some white lithium grease on the rubber grommet of the cover, where it sits on the plastic posts. Removal next time will be far easier.
Be sure to correctly put the plugs on the coil. I put in new quality plugs for European cars from Amazon, $42. The correct pattern is, #1 plug top right, #2 top left, #3 bottom left, #4 plug bottom right. Took me a while to figure it out but got rid of all my codes!
@@colleenrafacz2582 hey, I really appreciate the response and what you just explained. Just been doing my homework before touching any. I have the NGK wire plugs/ Set. Think was $80 but the guy at advance auto made it $56. Versus me paying online and waiting 3 to 7 business days.🙄
I have an 09 Jetta. Is it necessary to gap the spark plugs before installing? I recently did my first ever spark plug and coil change and after about 15 minutes or less of driving the check engine light came on, not sure where I went wrong.
@@vincoinc7 Bosch decided 20 years ago that multi electrode plugs were better. They then marketed them as "more is better" and people bought it. I've replaced more bad Bosch plugs then any other. Multi electrode plugs make it very easy for deposited material to collect around the electrode and foul out the plug. For what it's worth, if you go with their standard single electrode plug, you're fine.
@@SkyhookStudios Thanks, I just purchased the old school single electrode Copper OE plug for my kids 2.5. Just doing some preventive maintainence for her. How do you know when you need to change the coils? Plugs have been done on this car every 40k, and it is now at 120K. Bought it used but it had full service records from new. Rare for sure.
The coil packs don't have any retaining nuts? What was the torque spec on the plugs? You may have mentioned it. I've watched this video as I'm considering the purchase a very low mileage (30000 kms) 2013 Golf SportWagen with the same 2.5L. I do all of my own maintenance. Great video, BTW.
Hey Y’all, so I’m trying to find coils and plugs for my 2015 VW Passat 1.8L SE... I’ve literally been searching for two days now with no results. I want to try any kits that I can order. I’m fully aware that I can get OEM... but those are $38 a pop... bs. Any help would be much appreciated!
You can use a regular 5/8th or 16mm (nearly the same size) socket. The dedicated Spark plug socket will have a rubber insert that aides in removing the plug once loose. You will need a magnet to retrieve the plug if you use a regular socket. Spark plugs sockets are usually made with thinner side walls to get into the spark plugs tubes better.
I bought everything I needed to fix the coils and spark plugs. I did it and then went to the dealership to have them reset the codes, they said I did a spectacular job all codes cleared and I drove away feeling empowered. Thank you for the video, it was explicit and helpful.

What engine is in it? And is it manual or automatic trans?
@@SkyhookStudios it is an automatic, with the option to switch gears manually, if shift is moved to the right you can shift up or down, not a real manual drive
@@SkyhookStudios I replaced the air filter and used some injector cleaner and I have had no more issues since. Its been about 9 days. Fingers crossed
spark plug gapped??
Great video, thank you so much.
Broke the tang thing on the connector.. Should I replace the whole thing or zip tie it?
Zip tie would be my immediate suggestion. Unless you're familiar with de pinning connectors to replace it.
Does anyone know what it mean if I replaced all of the ignition coils and spark plugs but I’m still getting a misfire for the forth cylinder? Should I just replace them again I used aftermarket coils idk if that caused it to not work or not?
Oem all the way
Thank you for sharing !
Did he disconnect the battery when doing the repair?
@@SkyhookStudios nope
That's the only thing I could think of. Does it say "0" miles left all the time or is it just not accurate?
Excellent job👌🙌🙌🙌👆👍💪💪💪
Great informative video! I ordered Bosch replacement spark plugs for my 2011 Volkswagon Jetta Sportline. The thread pitch is correct however the total length of the replacement plugs are about 3/16" shorter than the existing plugs. Will a shorter plug work? Please comment when you have a moment. Thanks
Take those Bosche plugs back and get any other brand then Bosche. As far as the length goes, as long as the look up says they are compatible, you should be good.
@@SkyhookStudios if they show as compatible why do you recommend against Bosch?
@@mathewhoran2684 Bosch has tried many times to reinvent the spark plug field. They are famous for using multiple electrodes. In doing so that allows spots for build up from the combustion process. Eventually fauling the plugs out prematurely. In hindsight I should have stated to use only the traditional single electrode regardless of manufacturer of plug. Bosch makes them but most choose the multiple electrode one without knowing. It's the "more is better" thought but not with this one.
Very helpful many thanks to you.
Very helpful, thanks!
Off hand, do you know if prying up the ignition coils, to make detaching the electrical plug, also work on a 2009 2.5L v5 Jetta? The set up looks pretty much the exact same so I hope the 2009 will have as much wiggle room as that looks to be the most difficult part of the process.
Yes, Volkswagen coils are almost all held in by tension.
Thank you. Question where did you purchase your coils and plugs?
vw parts direct
Torque Specs for the plugs?
25NM or 18.5 Ft lbs
Hi can you tel me wher it locate the gas filter on ve Passat 2013 2.5 L
Thank you for the video, awesome video extremely helpful. I have a question once the tune up is done, do you need to do any type of scan in the computer or anything related to it.
Nope
I would love to see the trick to pull that engine cover out, thanks.
The trick is to put some white lithium grease on the rubber grommet of the cover, where it sits on the plastic posts. Removal next time will be far easier.
Get a cold air intake and throw that ugly ass engine cover in the trash lol
Is it important to go back with Volkswagen stuff or is it okay to use off-brand
Great,great detailed video bro!
Really needed to see this. The camera angles are great.
QUESTION...I use this same method for my 2014 2.0 Jetta???
Essentially yes. It's an inline motor so it should be similar albeit the same.
What is the tool used on the clamp called?
Where do you buy that strange looking tool with a red handle to remove the clamp?
Google "hose clamp pliers" there are various versions that should come up. I believe it's actual name is "Remote reach hose clamp pliers".
whered yiou buy the sparkplugs and what kind, thanks!
Rockauto.com denso or NGK. Never Bosch
@@SkyhookStudios Whats wrong with Bosch?
Coil Packs are held in via tension of the rubber portion at the top. Spark plugs are 25 nm (18.5 ft lbs) of torque.
@@SkyhookStudios Thanks!
Will the ignition coil grip the plug and pull it out?
Sometimes, but you can run the risk of damaging the coil boot if the plug isn't standing upright. A magnet works best.
Very good video bro
Hey Y’all, so I’m trying to find coils and plugs for my 2015 VW Passat 1.8L SE... I’ve literally been searching for two days now with no results. I want to try any kits that I can order. I’m fully aware that I can get OEM... but those are $38 a pop... bs. Any help would be much appreciated!
Rockauto.com has then for 20$ each
Skyhook Studios : Heading to the site now! Thanks SS!
I was having same issue.. No one could order them not had them in stock.. off to a website it is..
check out FCP Euro. I have a VW and Volvo and the prices are great and you get OEM at very reasonable prices.
Such a great video
Great video have you replaced a water pump before? Do you have to jack the engine?
Yes, and technically you don't have to. It will give you a bit more room to get the 10mm bolts out though.
What’s that special clamp tool called again?
Search for 2 foot remote hose clamp tool
Do you need spark plug socket or can you use regular socket
You can use a regular 5/8th or 16mm (nearly the same size) socket. The dedicated Spark plug socket will have a rubber insert that aides in removing the plug once loose. You will need a magnet to retrieve the plug if you use a regular socket. Spark plugs sockets are usually made with thinner side walls to get into the spark plugs tubes better.
@@SkyhookStudios thank you, ended up having a spark plug socket, your video made the install very easy!
