  • Tips on how to set up a nearly no-build van conversion for a stealth, functional, livable off-grid living in a tiny house van life conversion for $500 - maybe in a weekend! - is what's covered in this van build tour. ? This is a low-roof van, so I built my van for floor-sitting! It's simple, quick, easy, and doesn't require lots of expensive tools. If you're on a tight budget and looking for a cheap way to get into van life and frugal off-grid living and van life, this might be your way. I thought this would just be my start and I'd build more extravagantly with time, but it's been so good that I've only done minor additions to the original build! I can take it apart and put it back together in only 30 minutes! This is a Ford Econoline E150 or E250 Van Conversion, but the ideas would work for most simple van builds.

    I love this simplicity! So, if you were in it full time, what things would you do differently? Also, how do you find the condensation drips on the roof of the van onto your bed? Just got a van and about to build it out and was racking my brain over the stupid floor. 🤣

    • @SwellerVanDweller
      @SwellerVanDweller  2 года назад +2

      I've traveled in the Central and western parts of Canada and the US and have never had condensation on the roof. If I lived in it full time I would probably be using my computer more inside so would want a swivel passenger seat and a good stable table.

    I think you must have gone a bit over because you haven't accounted for hardware, nails, screws, adhesives, ratchet straps, tarps storage, baskets and so on, but it's still very low budget. Prices for everything has also gone up and now that bed probably will cost about $300. I like how you've stored the bike though, especially that notch in the plywood cut out for the rear derailleurs. This is going to be making me rethink how and where I should put my bike, something I've been struggling to figure out how to do for some time. I was trying to avoid blocking the rear door but I can't figure out where else to put it.

    • @SwellerVanDweller
      @SwellerVanDweller  Год назад +1

      Believe it or not - this includes everything: hardware such as screws, ratchet straps, and rubber totes, etc! However, this was done in 2016, so you're right that prices have gone up! The garage for the bike has been perfect. The only thing is that you have to think ahead: taking the bike out is quick, like 10 seconds, but I make sure that I only do it once a day, exchanging gear I need and stowing things I won't need depending upon my upcoming plans.

      @@SwellerVanDweller Of course. I, as a solo vandwelling woman wanna travel light. I rarely ever stay longer than 2 days at any spot, and can go shopping for groceries at least once a week. When I see how many people bog their vans down with needless but heavy shit I can only shake my head. I travel South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, and the danger of getting stuck in the desert is always there. In that case my van must be light enough so that I can set it up on recovery tracks by myself. And a library with 100s of printed paper books, 100 liters of fresh water and another 100 liters of grey water won't help me in that situation. The vehicle must always be strong enough to tear up the floor and get me "outta there!"
      What I would add to your van: Recovery tracks and an electric airpump so I can let out air off the tyres when driving in sand and fill them up again once I'm back on asphalt. And my next van will be 4x4.

      I'm 5'8". If I was taller, I would sleep on an angle on the bed for more room as it's wide enough.
