That's what I did. Camping cot, laundry baskets, 3 drawer dressers plastic Walmart. Portable rubber collapsible sink, small go pro plus power station, clam shell solar panels, USB chargeable fans and lights. Butane 1 burner stove and small heater and small swamp cooler to keep cool. Cost about $350 for everything. I have a Dodge Grand minivan. Love it. Thanks again for all the knowledge you share with us.
I just got home from. My first van trip! 31 days, 14 states, 8500 miles! I'm giving my 60 day notice on my apartment and hitting the road full time at the end of February 2024!
I'm 35 and I've wanted to get into van life for years. This video is what inspired me to just do it. I'm leaving for Arizona next week in my no build mini van and I couldn't be more excited.
Same I’m going all the way to the fl keys 💯I’m traveling to fl and I’m in sc now. I’m hitting 24 major city’s. I love it. I have a new Chevy z71 Silverado It’s been exceptionally nice.
Pro tip: Get totes that are different colors or use a strip of colored duct tape to give you a quick reference for what is inside it. Example: blue for toiletries, red for kitchen tools etc.
Yes! Or use something (marker, nail polish, ink, tape) to write something on the outside on every side. I write K for kitchen, T for toiletries etc etc.
I'm thinking about van or camper living Fall 2020 upon my return from Alaska. I'd be located in the Southwest/Nevada. My main concern is securing a reliable energy source. Any pointers?
Sandy Cakes If you’re not super tech savvy, I recommend the Jackery explorer power station ( 240 if you don’t need tons of power and the 500 if you think you’ll need more). Then you can order a 100w portable solar panel on amazon and you’ll be set. The solar panel is about $200 and the explorer 240 is about $250 so it’s a little pricey but not too bad considering how simple it is to use and how much power you’ll be getting. Good luck 👍
You could take a towel or sheet and drape it over the metal cot frame under the mattress and it will hide everything stored under the cot giving a nice clean look to your mini home.😊
I started crying around the time your friends crawled in to demonstrate how to measure the piping. What BEAUTIFUL people you all are. I hope to meet you one day Bob. Thank you for all of the quality work and information you put out. It’s all the information I’ve been looking for and has single-handedly given me the confidence to finally break free and go after a life that I truly desire and deserve! You are doing so much for society and I appreciate all your hard work so deeply. Thank you so much.
I totally follow this man. He is amazing and gives me hope. He absolutely cares about people and always shares the most affordable things that nearly everyone can do.
@@mykingdomforahorse9256 I had mine four months ago, no issues yet! The bill Gates nanobots don't seem to be doing anything, my spiritual life is unaffected and my health is fine. No sign of reptilian overlords yet either.
9 years and counting. Selling everything and doing this. I’m so jaded by cost of living and keeping such a darn small percentage of my inadequate wages. I work my tail off until I’m sick sometimes and still struggle. I live in a really expensive area and am a single mom who can’t move. In 9 years, my sweet kiddos will be independent and I’ll be lonely as they leave the nest so this is the perfect solution to everything! Watching this makes me feel excited about the future rather than trapped. And this is definitely simple enough for anyone to do!! Thank you!
Hear hear. Anne from Ireland loving the Bob and everything he does. Bringing van living back to how it was meant to be. We will look back at the era of building out a full hi-tech apartment in de back of a $2k Sprinter in years to come and laugh our heads off at de madness
After reading through a vast number of comments and already leaving 2 comments myself; I think CheapRVliving has inspired an entire movement of minivan builder/travelers and provided the 'answer' they've been hoping for. "Hat off" to you.
I'm not a fan. It takes all of the force from the vertical upright and puts it on the small crossmember /weld. It'd be better if you put a support dowel inside the PVC to keep the force on the leg.
@@justintempus7406 I put the question to my husband (w/o showing your comment) and yep, that's the first thing he said. Heck, that shouldn't be too hard to find. I hope your comment causes Bob to update this video. Hubby is the engineer, Bioanalytical Chemistry is my field, ha. Thanks for your reply.
I think this PVC trick is nice, especially for someone who doesn't have a whole lot of strength. I would personally rather go for metallic tubing, or just shortening the other legs cause I think in time the PVC might deteriorate under the weight of the person sleeping... But that would take a while anyways. By the way, if you want your cut to be straight, you can take a piece of thin cardboard with a straight factory edge to it and wrap it around your pipe to mark it, then all you have to do is cut along...
I put a small cookie sheet under my stove just in case there are any spill overs while cooking. It makes for easy clean up and protects the plastic totes from heat.
Cookie sheets are so cool. I use them under the little stove, and for wind breaks around the stove when outside, and as a serving tray, and as a place to put tools when working on equipment. Oh, and of course to make cookies and pizza!
The legs of the cot can be used as anchor points for bungee cords. Stretch bungee cords from leg to leg to further prevent the under the cot plastic bins, drawers and totes from shifting about while the vehicle is in motion. Also, @15:25 a piece of plywood can placed over the green totes to act as a table. Take a measurement of the size needed to lay on top of the totes and then have the home improvement center, like Home Depot, cut it for you. When not in use, simply sandwich the plywood between the mattress and the cot frame
This video is a classic. I can't even imagine how many people have found hope, encouragement, and peace of mind by looking at this video. Bob has so much love in his heart.
One thing I would do with a van conversion is pvc pipes for tent poles and a large tarp from Harbor Freight to make a tent room off the back door of the van. Having a wind and rain proof room to stand in and cook "chuck-wagon" style helps remove some of the "cramped" feeling during foul weather. It's also not difficult to use sch40 pvc pipe to make a frame for an awning over the side door. A "front porch" layout under the awning also helps alleviate a lot of claustrophobia.
I have a friend who uses extendable paint roller handles - they extend to something like 6-7 feet! She uses them for tarp setup over and around her tent. I want to get a few for myself as $$ allow!
Wow! I think I'm going to try this. I have an apt. that costs so much monthly. I'm a single gal (almost 63) and want a simpler life. Didnt know exactly how I was going to do it. These things I can do. On with the garage sale. Thank you, thank you
I’m 63, my husband and I go for several days at a time in the summer. We have a Chevy Uplander with foam mattress and milk crates filled with our stuff. Fun.
@@rochellekramer3410 Me too, ladies; am just getting divorced, and do not have the money to buy a heavy vehicle that can tow a small camper - no money for both a camper and a newer vehicle (And, I need a newer vehicle, since my current one is on it's last legs...) I too, came to the conclusion that a van is a solution, to my financial situation, furnishing it with a cot with enough storage underneath, and plastic containers, etc.. I'm looking at a Toyota Sienna - taking ALL of the seats out, except the front ones... I see that the second and last row of seats can weigh quite a lot; taking them out will be a smart thing to do, and make room for a cot and storage...
Ladies, once we are on the road, we can travel with other ladies. I would encourage you to try to buy a high roof van because at our age, getting dressed lying down will get very old. I was lucky to purchase one only five years old for under $10,000. Use items you already have in your home for the build. I was living in my van for six weeks when we moved and it’s just a change of mindset. Some people don’t understand, but I was so relaxed not having the huge mortgage hanging over my head! Safe and happy travels!
@@annecaulder9495 There is a nationwide group of women who do just what you are describing, and they strike me as some of the nicest people on earth. I cant remember the name of their group, but I almost think that Bob did a video about them. They travel with small tow behind trailers and set them up really nicely inside and out.
These are such great videos for people that want to do this but for people that find themselves in a situation and HAVE to do this these videos are priceless! Thank-you Bob!
This was inspirational. Most of us are a paycheck away from being without shelter. It’s very comforting to know there’s a way to survive, no matter what. If nothing else, it’s great hacks for just a camping trip. Thank you for this!
my grandma died and my dad gave me her van... it's very special to me i was going to get a high top sprinter before this happened but i had no idea how to get it built but now that the plan has changed and you have this video... i know exactly what to do... thank you this was an incredibly valuable resource for my personal situation ❤️🌞✌️
I wish you the very best. I had to leave my home when I was 15. I only had a bicycle to get to work, school and wherever I was sleeping. I really hated the winter those years... Be safe and listen to your gut about anything and everyone. God bless you from L.A.
If I wasn't so attached to my flowers, this would be the life for me. At 69 and partially disabled my dumpy, old, paid for, shack with lots of perennials is a better fit. I may have to join the patreon anyway because I know that in spite of not having anything fancy, I am blessed to have a roof over my head, gas heat and indoor plumbing. You guys rock!
thank you for this Bob. Most likely, I will never "live" in a rig. My sticks and bricks costs less than most rent and I'm content. Where this helps me is, I have children that live hundreds of miles away, and what I truly need is a "rolling hotel room". This fits that perfectly. My own space when I'm at their house and my own hotel on the road.
same here, my house is so inexpensive it would be crazy to leave it to full time, people cant even rent an apartment for the amount I pay for a decent sized house with front and back yard, I just bought before things got insane. but I love my camper van, I have it all set up as IF I was going to live in it but just use it for weekend trips and to avoid paying for hotels when I travel. sometimes we take it even just for day trips because its nice to have a little home base with a place to go to the bathroom, a sink to wash hands, a little fridge ect. I love vans!
I am looking at the Teardrop trailer option as my rolling hotel room. As my trips will be few and far between I think the trailer will better suit my lifestyle without cluttering up either my vehicle or home.
@@RedfishInc been thinking bout that too but my income is tight so have to insure something else so not sure what im gonna do yet..lol besides fix home to sell it.
I've been watching 100's of videos. And most of them are really good. But this video has to be the best I've ever seen. Straight to the point, simple, cheap and doable. I love it. Even I could do this.
When I think of all the vets who are living outside, this could be a great solution for some of them. A gentleman in my area was featured on the news saying he lived on the street in warm weather so he could use his small pension to rent a room in the winter. How much better this could be for him!
@@jamesmurphy2828 I don't think gas mileage is the priority for folks living in a van unless they are doing a LOT of driving on a regular basis. If you're living in and around a city, 16 mi/gal would probably be fine relative to paying for an apartment.
This is genius. You're going to help a lot of people with this! A couple of hints 1. Put a few layers of cardboard on the cot before you put your bedding down, to cover those bars that kill your back. 2. Measure your bins that you plan to use under the cot, and don't cut the legs off too short for them to fit.
That cot will kill your back no matter what type of cardboard you put under it. What he doesn't say in this video is how uncomfortable that "no-build build" will be. That cot is cheap, and you get what you pay for. Same with the shelves and storage units. There's a reason a build is better: it lasts longer and is more comfortable. This video shows you how to be homeless in a van.
@@thedanholmes In today's uncertain economy, how to be homeless in a van for 300 bucks is an essential lesson. Most people cannot afford luxury these days.
@@thedanholmes Yes, it's an emergency solution. Improvements can be added as the situation evolves. For instance, 1/4" plywood with holes drilled into it for air circulation could create a flat surface for the mattress. Cheap and simple, as soon as one can find the money for the materials, or better yet, a resource that's throwing offcuts away.
@@thedanholmes I have these same plastic containers and I live in an apartment. You don’t need to build every thing. This is to get you started. To be free from whatever situation you’re in that you need to get out of, whether that’s an abusive relationship, financial cost of living, or just the need to get out and see the world. 💫
@@chezmoi42 I like the basic suggestions. But I also do know how to use a fewl tools. I am an empty nester. I have a lot of leftover/behind furniture and furnishings that I can convert/repurpose, if I choose to. Once an old entertainment system, the top of it is on the floor in my sewing room that I haven't used in years, and I could maybe repurpose that. And something I have that is really cute, I don't know that I can convert it, but I'm sure there's a way, is an old telephone desk that has the lamppost through the end of it with a shade even. I would have to run a electric, but if I had a jackery I could. Or I can convert it and make it solar or something instead. Or just put a solar light bulb in the socket and not plug it in. But it sure would make the van homey/quaint. There's the cubby hole under-the-table next to the seat where the phone books and such would go. That could be used for storage for other items. Say like maps, coloring books, supplies, crafts and road games. And right underneath I could place my own fashion picnic basket with the picnic plates, cups and such, already inside of that. I wouldn't even have spend money on those things.
I cannot tell you how I needed to see this video. Pay cuts drove me to half what I was making a month and I no longer can afford the smallest apartment (even bachelor apts are 1300 right now). I have been scared because not many options all the apartments I have seen have been 2000+ and the rooms for rent are around 1400. I cannot say thank you enough to a community that has helped me tremendously
I have watched so many van builds and get overwhelmed because I am not a builder, nor do I have endless funds to finance a major van build. You have made this so doable for anyone! Thank you :)
I wanna chime in with how awesome this is and add to what one viewer pointed out about this being a portable hotel room to visit her kids and another viewer saying how this is "stealth." Yes!!! In some neighborhoods, you or the people you're visiting can get in trouble if you park a camper for too long in someone's driveway. No one can complain about this one. It's just a mini van!
My kids and I took an impromptu trip to the beach in our Toyota Sienna when they were younger and decided to stay overnight, couldn't find a hotel because some big event was happening and the 4 of us slept in the van overnight and they loved it and to wake up and see the ocean was something remarkable. I'm buying another one and doing just this to spend the summer at the beach this year. The best thing is that it's so easy to drive somewhere or walk to a restroom and I'll use my gym membership to shower every couple days. I can't wait!
This was so helpful because not everyone can build something. This is the best and most practical video ever. I really appreciate the simplicity of this video. I would truly like to see more like this in the future. Thanks Bob!
Made my minivan bed from futon spring and legs from an old pallet, lower so I could sit up. Hung a hammock when I had a friend along. Plastic drawers from second hand stores, cookware from rummage sales. Works like a champ.
Exactly... I lived in my mini van for 9months last year with my two dogs and became debt free... I now rent a room which works well.Bob actually saved me from what could of been a very bad time in my life ✌️
I have been watching a lot of videos about converting vans into campers for quite awhile all the other ways I could not afford because I am on disability this is the one I am going to do mini vans are a lot cheaper than cargo vans and step vans plus they get better gas mileage I am so glad that I have found a way that I can travel and live in a van thank you for this video I am 65 on disability and want to see these United States and with the amount of money I get from disability this can now be done thank you again I am so happy
awesome ideas! while back I built a Sprinter VAN using the same concept. Quean size bed with 4' clearance under for toys or whatever you may need. In the back I put a cabalas fishing table with build in sink and faucet. Manual pump for water to hook up fresh tank and gray tank. Folding chair next to the table. 3 tier storage for food and other things. I think the total build was under 500$. I think that putting the sleeping area and storage between the axels and behind the seats create a safer built in case of a collision. It also distributes the weight very evenly and the handling is not impacted at all. Sure, Teak wood is much better looking. I can rip my stuff out of the van in 60 minutes and you would not know it's a camper van. one more tip, if you have a metal roof you can use magnets to suspend a mosquito netting over the queen bed and sleep with crack doors and windows open. It sure beats any setup up where you have to constantly go through some velcro or magnet driven bug protection which cost arm in a leg and is pain to install. cheers.
Thank you for your service. I am a part of groups where people sometimes experience abusive home situations. Many people give "thoughts and prayers". Because of your videos I can link actual solutions. The people have thanked me. So thank you!!!
I just bought a GMC Safari for $2700, 100k miles, it needs some mechanical work but it's such a good van and it'll be better once I build it out. this video is perfect!
I like your content a lot more than those other van life videos I see on RUclips who seem to just focus on fancy production quality. Your stuff is more realistic and straight to the point!
I am beginning to realize that I can use furniture that I already have! I have soft sided bags and "drawers". Look around your house. You may discover that you have a lot of things that you can use for your adventure.
Lowes' and Home Depot cut wood for free might cut PVC too, just ask. This "no build" build is totally doable, and a way to test if this would be a lifestyle to pursue...
@@dingfeldersmurfalot4560 Next time take the PVC pipe to the wood trim area. HD usually has a do-it-yourself cutting station set up there with saws and even rulers.
Home Depot got massively bent when I asked them to cut PVC. And they did a crappy job, just to sure they sent a "message" that they didn't want to do it. Uneven measurements and ragged edges.
Great video! I'm a 63 year-old grandmother who did a no-build on my 2008 Toyota Sienna. I used a regular twin metal bed frame with a piece of plywood and a twin mattress. I use under-bed and behind-bed plastic storage drawers and containers. I have two solar lanterns. I tinted the side windows and use a custom cover for the back window and a curtain behind the front seats. My potty is a 2-gallon lidded bucket (I'm small!) with a "separator" insert. I am fortunate to have a room at my daughter's home, but my minivan camper is my ticket to cheap, enjoyable freedom weekends and summers. Thank you for sharing the message that simple can be best of all!
I love this channel so much. Every time I get discouraged about wanting to do van life, I feel comforted by the possibilities shown here. Plus SO much information on not only building a mobile home, but looking for the vehicle itself. Thank you so much for keeping mine and everyone else’s ambitions alive!
I’m trying to convert a van so I am able to travel with my one year old daughter as the house situation I’m in is not something I want her to grow up around! Thank you so much for this wonderful video, so helpful! I’m super excited to watch bob explain solar easily!
I did build for my daughter. We didn’t know what to do for a bed. But I found industrial plastic shelves. We cut the legs down and zip tied it together. For the ‘mattress’ we used an outdoor cushion for a lounge chair. Then we used things we had at home-plastic bins and the like. Thanks for a great video.
I love it! Van life appeals to me, but I've always dreaded the idea of trying to convert a vehicle. This is so simple! You could be on the road with just a few days of prep. Thank you!
That's it Leah, I started in my camper pulling Ram 3500 and have been doing it for years and years. Used to get embarrassed but then saved some good money working and staying in one truck. I am probably the most prolific minimalist in the country. All a person really needs is foods , drink , and shelter and of course a few rags 😆
Great job Bob helping others and filming it for you tube is great way to share as 1/3 of North America can't afford to live and this is one way of survival
I’m a tent camper and camp for weeks not days, organization is a must. That being said I’ve been looking into van camping since I’m a retired woman (fixed income) and a van in my opinion is way better than a truck with a shell, not having to break camp saves lots of time, and I want to hit as many National Parks as possible. You only live once, right? Your tips are so informative and useful because I can be a minimalistic. I intend to travel with my 2 dogs, for protection, company and because I love them to death, thus I need space for them (70 and 35 lbs, not small, they love camping) I subscribed to your channel as I feel your ideas are excellent guidance for the future to come. Thanks a million. Hint pots pan etc get the stuff for backpacking, you can get cheap stuff, everything nests together and takes very little space, same as a camping cot, very comfortable and not as wide.
Depending on length, a small futon couch might work, too, so that you can use the bed for seating too, if you choose! Walmart has one that looks like a couch, but folds down into a double bed, with adjustable side pieces, that can be popped up as arms when its in the sofa position! I have one, works fine. As I don't have a mini van or full van, I couldn't say if it would fit; but if it would, that would be a good option!
Thank you for this. I want a wonderful build but I cannot afford it rn and must live in the van due to my home life and COVID. I appreciate this so much. Y’all are a Godsend.🙏🏾✨✨

@@judibohn1548 buy and do the van first. Travel and check out where you would actually like to live before you sell the house and find out you made a mistake, that's what I hope to do.
Hi Bob, Great idea. If I may offer two suggestions I think you will find them helpful. 1st. Once you Mark the the length for your PVC take a piece of tape and wrap it around the pipe at the marks, this will give you a perfectly straight line to follow while making your straight every time . 2nd. To prevent all the weight and pressure on the PVC ( cold climates can make the PVC brittle at the uneven pressure point at the cross bar), drill to small holes through the PVC continuing through the cot leg. After that take small drift pins or a bolts that will match the diameter of your drilled holes. This will also secure the leg extensions to the cot. Thank you, Bob Mahaney Baltimore Maryland
OMG, I'm so thankful for this video. I'm purchasing my Sienna in a few weeks, I've been stressing about how to build the floor and carpentry. I'm so glad you made this because it takes a lot off of my mind. This is something simple that I can do. Thankful Bob and all the comments below.

Bob does for the homeless what the Government should be doing. I am not an American but wish we had a "Bob Wells" in my country. He is such a compassionate and decent human being.
Thank you for this video, Bob. I am looking for a van, but would not live in it full time. I like this build because it can easily be changed back to function as a mini van only. And I do not have the skills necessary to do a complete build anyway. This is a super valuable video for many.
What a great video! I just wish there were more like to help those out before becoming homeless You take barely nothing and turn it into something easy and comfortable You make a huge difference out there Bob! 👏👏👏

Thank you for giving hope to those who feel hopeless and stranded in their situations. Sometimes that hopelessness feeling is less when you have a project that you can do to help yourself and your situation. showing people these videos, Can give people Hope that it’s not the end there’s more to life and life isn’t always what other people think it is. We travelled on the road for three years living out of our 1 ton with just a bed in the back seat and Window coverings. The first night my husband slept in the backseat and I slept in the front because we were going to put a tent up and it started to rain and we couldn’t set it up. I insisted that he take the backseat which was more comfortable because he was doing most of the driving and I could just doze in the passenger seat. When we eventually got back home we removed the backseat. Made a platform bought a mattress installed our generator in the back under the tone cover ran the exhaust through the box underneath out the far corner. We ran an extension cord from the generator through the hole that the backseat bolt that we removed, the extension cord which at night would charge up our devices and charge up the truck battery through a trickle charger under the hood. Used zip ties to secure to the frame.. would also run a fan/heater when needed. Our truck has a sun roof... so we bought a set of strong magnets and used duct tape around the edge and placed the magnets in the tape. We would place that on the sun roof at night. If it rained it was easy enough to close it without the screen interfering with the system.
Wow....suddenly RV living doesn't look quite as impossible! It's always been my dream but as a single mum on a disability pension I considered it impossible. But now I'm thinking perhaps one day it will be. Really inspiring...Thanks so much Bob - must catch up on your videos when I get the chance, and God bless! What an amazing, caring person you are. Hi from Australia.💜💜💜💜💜
This is the most valuable video I’ve seen on this subject. It’s overwhelming to imagine taking on a build that you need to live in and have money for but this gives me peace of mind to know if I ever need, it’s not as hard to live comfortably off the street and be independent.

Pausing at 13:05: you get a bag from Cracker Barrell when you buy something in their store and those bags are awesome. Also, when you order something from Amazon, tick the checkbox to have it giftwrapped because that is just a decorative bag with drawstring ribbon and they are excellent quality bags to store stuff in, really good to have and it’s free with your order.
Theresa M - you are welcome. We use the Amazon giftwrap bags for computer cables because they can get lost easily and don’t really fit in a drawer well.
Great build! When cutting the PVC, please make sure you cut it over something to catch the tiny plastic fragments...these fragments will blow around, mix with rain water and be tracked into various environments...thank you!❤️🌻
This is such a great resource! I am planning on creating a kit like this for my 2010 Dodge G Caravan, not to live in permanently, but as a Van-cationer to allow for cheap road trips. I also like the idea of having a mental backup plan in my life for if something ever happens to me where I am no longer in a financially stable situation.
Came back to this video again, because I lucked into finding the exact same cot shown in the video at a garage sale for $10. I already have my two 4" matresses that I have been using on the floor of my van, so this is an great upgrade just in time for a week long trip in March. Couple of things to note, for me at least, the couple inch slant on the floor has not been a bother to me sleeping on the floor or on the frame, and my head barely touches the ceiling as is, so I don't want to use the PVC method and give up any more headroom. I also don't want to cut the legs off the cot itself, because I value the flexibility to move the cot and mattresses into a tent. Everyone sleeps different, but I just left the slant and STILL sleep better in my car than I do in my house. Second, a really nice feature of the stow and go third seat in the Dodge Grand Caravans like the one shown is the 60/40 seat. Where Bob put those two greens totes, there is a seat that can pull up out of the floor with room to spare, making a built in living room chair. That also leaves more kitchen space in the back.
Thanks for this! Something that I could do so easily. I’m a bachelor who lives alone in a small apartment, and even it doesn’t get filled with my stuff. If I further pared it down to the real essentials, it would easily fit here. Looking at the double-stacked containers under this bed, I figure I’d need only a single-stacked row of them. So I could have an even lower bed (as pointed out here, more headroom). One thing that I would add would be to bolt down the bed and have a system to strap everything down. If, Lord forbid, I should get into an accident, chances of survival would be higher if it wasn’t just me that’s strapped down.
I just wanted to say thank you for caring about those who are struggling with homeless due to the high cost of housing. I'm in my 50's work full time and still have difficulty making rent. I'm looking for alternatives and this gives me hope as I have absolutely no building skills what do ever. The one thing I would really be interested in is how to add a shower, because I would need to shower before work.
One idea ...get a kiddypool plastic ($10 $ general) or blow up. Take a hulahoop ( yes !!! Lol ) hang it from the top with bungie cords then warm up water put it in a spray bottle . I use the garden size pump it spray it works great 👍 oh and a fold up stool to sit on
Thank you so much for all that you do. These no build builds are a real solution for me. I found cabinets second hand on Facebook marketplace. I found a handyman. We began installing my first cabinet today. I am so excited to be moving forward.
You can actually buy a hack saw and a hand saw at the Dollar Tree! I have both of those saws and they work just fine. They actually carry a big assortment of tools like screwdrivers, caulking, work goggles, zip ties, levels, tape measures, bungee cords, etc....the list goes on! Not to mention things like a pack of disposable washcloths, all kinds of hygiene items, flashlights.....pretty much everything you can think of and then some! Obviously the tools aren’t Snap On quality, but in a pinch, they’ll do. They also sell tarps....I keep thinking of stuff! Lol! Bob, you are just the best. You help so many people, it’s just wonderful to see. I’m 62, and I would love to do the nomad thing, but my family would NEVER understand!! Lol!
Really like the extension idea for the legs of the cot. I hadn't thought about that and it will come in handy. FYI, keep an eye on the multi drawer plastic storage units. On some of them the frames pop apart. A three drawer wouldn't fit in the back of my car for kitchen storage, but a two drawer went in perfectly. Also, the grocery sacks many of us are required to buy anyway these days are usually flat bottomed, fairly sturdy, and cost 99 cents.... and they hold quite a bit. Waiting on the solar episode because, try as I might, that stuff just doesn't stick in my head!
I just love Bob! He's the man... The videos he does really are uplifting, especially for those folks who are without homes, etc. There are so many folks who would help those who are attempting this way of life. To have a place to lay your head at night and be protected from the elements and creatures is a game changer. 😊
I agree! I plan on doing a build like this, for the same reason. We always get really bad costal flooding, when storms hit, and having a ready to go campervan can really help to alleviate some of the stress that evacuations bring!
Good girl so hard to find prepared minded folks here in the sunshine state, last storm I was astounded at all my neighbors that didn't even have stored water WTH?
That is great because you have a place to stay and sleep and eat and don't have to pay the high hotel prices ,but half the battle in out running the hurricane is, to get in your SUV and leave before the whole state of Florida does and you're stuck on the highway.lol
What do you have for a heater?
What kind of insurance did you get?
whats your power station and cooler?
Thank you so much for sharing this 👍🙂

Pro tip: Get totes that are different colors or use a strip of colored duct tape to give you a quick reference for what is inside it.
Example: blue for toiletries, red for kitchen tools etc.
Yes! Or use something (marker, nail polish, ink, tape) to write something on the outside on every side. I write K for kitchen, T for toiletries etc etc.
I'm thinking about van or camper living Fall 2020 upon my return from Alaska. I'd be located in the Southwest/Nevada. My main concern is securing a reliable energy source. Any pointers?
Great idea for anyone trying to get organized!👍👍👍
Sandy Cakes solar... but depends on where you’re located
Good luck 👍
Probably the most important video you've made. You have been a gift to so many people. Right on.
Thrift stores, flea markets, and Habitat for Humanity are great places to find items for a build out.
And bulk garbage days as well.
Old bureau drawers can also work well for storage under the bed especially when it’s a lower bed.
If you're in a city with Freecycle, that's another good option, as are Facebook groups for giving things away.
You could take a towel or sheet and drape it over the metal cot frame under the mattress and it will hide everything stored under the cot giving a nice clean look to your mini home.😊
A shower curtain or a plastic tarp or a mover's blanket...
Yes or just use a twin bed skirt. Great idea.

9 years and counting. Selling everything and doing this. I’m so jaded by cost of living and keeping such a darn small percentage of my inadequate wages. I work my tail off until I’m sick sometimes and still struggle. I live in a really expensive area and am a single mom who can’t move. Jerry S. Yesssss ❤️ isn't it great
The PVC leg adjustment idea is pure genius! Thank you
I'm not a fan.
Yes because I NEVER think of that
I think this PVC trick is nice, especially for someone who doesn't have a whole lot of strength.
No not really because now you've shift all the weight on those cross bar and they're are not positioned to take that kind of weight.
I put a small cookie sheet under my stove just in case there are any spill overs while cooking. It makes for easy clean up and protects the plastic totes from heat.
Or foil paper
Great idea
Genius. Like a bird cage lol
What about food storage?
Cookie sheets are so cool. I use them under the little stove, and for wind breaks around the stove when outside, and as a serving tray, and as a place to put tools when working on equipment. Oh, and of course to make cookies and pizza!
Genius. What a kind giving man Bob is, the best of humanity.

You give HOPE and INSPIRATION!
I was thinking that too about the plywood but great thinking with bungie cords!👍🏼😁
You can also buy a small amount of latex or acryllic based food grade liquid sealer.
Another option would be a large plastic cutting board.
Bungie cords are hreat for van life
They sell smaller pieces of plywood at HD. 2 foot by 2 foot.
If you dont need a whole sheet.
@@shawnr771 also they usually have scraps of wood for cheaper or free
Thanx Bob ur a ginormous blessing love ur videos !
How would you attach the pvc to the van?
Or in foul weather, drive your house away!
I made a tarp for the side of my dodge caravan. I sit under it in the rain and feels great. I also cook under it when raining.

I too, came to the conclusion that a van is a solution, to my financial situation, furnishing it with a cot with enough storage underneath, and plastic containers,
etc..
I wish you the very best. I had to leave my home when I was 15. I only had a bicycle to get to work, school and wherever I was sleeping. I really hated the winter those years...

That sounds like me!
same here, my house is so inexpensive it would be crazy to leave it to full time, people cant even rent an apartment for the amount I pay for a decent sized house with front and back yard, I just bought before things got insane. but I love my camper van, I have it all set up as IF I was going to live in it but just use it for weekend trips and to avoid paying for hotels when I travel. sometimes we take it even just for day trips because its nice to have a little home base with a place to go to the bathroom, a sink to wash hands, a little fridge ect. I love vans!
I am looking at the Teardrop trailer option as my rolling hotel room. As my trips will be few and far between I think the trailer will better suit my lifestyle without cluttering up either my vehicle or home.
Me too. Grown kids n family on the opposite coast and family far away.
And he'd have "wheels" to get to a part/full time job too!!!
Everyone can buy a van that gets what per mile ! 16 gallons
@@jamesmurphy2828 I don't think gas mileage is the priority for folks living in a van unless they are doing a LOT of driving on a regular basis. If you're living in and around a city, 16 mi/gal would probably be fine relative to paying for an apartment.
This is where I can invest/bless a VET for such a small amount,& what a blessing
Not everyone. I'm still stuck in this rented dump. No money to save for a van... I can barely keep my own head afloat!!@@jamesmurphy2828
I’ve been watching you for years and I finally bought a minivan! I am a big step closer to freedom! Thank you! 🧡

awesome ideas! while back I built a Sprinter VAN using the same concept. It sure beats any setup up where you have to constantly go through some velcro or magnet driven bug protection which cost arm in a leg and is pain to install. cheers.

Lowes' and Home Depot cut wood for free might cut PVC too, just ask. This "no build" build is totally doable, and a way to test if this would be a lifestyle to pursue...
It's also somewhat modular. If you want to add something later, you can do so.
Home Depot cuts PVC pipe to order. Did that last summer for my garden build.
I've had Lowes cut pvc leg risers for tables. I think they will do 8 cuts for free and charge a small fee per cut therafter
Great suggestion about the pans for backpacking! That's what I bought! They fit neatly together in a mesh bag no less!
I love how much he gives back to his fellow travelers💛
Depending on length, a small futon couch might work, too, so that you can use the bed for seating too, if you choose! Walmart has one that looks like a couch, but folds down into a double bed, with adjustable side pieces, that can be popped up as arms when its in the sofa position! I have one, works fine. As I don't have a mini van or full van, I couldn't say if it would fit; but if it would, that would be a good option!
I love how you really help people. This country and economy really needs people like you. Your ideas will be passed on to many others.
Thank you for this. I want a wonderful build but I cannot afford it rn and must live in the van due to my home life and COVID. I appreciate this so much. Y’all are a Godsend.🙏🏾✨✨
Don't give up
Keep routing out there time will come for you, 🙏 stay strong
Ok ,you can afford it slowly. So one thing at a time til its done.Speak positive and do what you can however slow til yours is how you want it.If it takes years it can still get done.I believe in you.Scavenging is an artform.Check the free sites often.
You got this!
Consider a small, plain work truck. That way, you're legal and blend right in. Nothing that screams you might have valuable tools on you, tho. Lol
Suddenly I’m fearless about my situation worrying about replacing my RV if it breaks down real ugly! 💕🤟🏻
This people are some of the best of humanity walking the planet! ❤️❤️❤️
I just picked up a transit connect. So much to consider with the building. Almost overwhelming the cutting for a roof fan is my biggest concern. This video inspired me to just start with a floor cot and some cube storage and enjoy my new bedroom on wheels. Great content.
Have a look at Lady Bugout. She has a basic no build/minimal build ford connect.
I can do this! I am fortunate to have a home paid for, but want a temporary camper van for travel and fun! I'm delighted. Thank you.
Me too tho want to sell my home and move..tho not sure where at but once sold love to get a cheap van and do this to travel across country and see couple things and my daughter in Seattle n bro. In Nevada b4 settlin on a place.
Add me to the growing number of women who have plans to do a conversion van & travel. Been planning this for 3 years. Almost bought a van 2 weeks ago but waiting til spring.
@@judibohn1548 buy and do the van first. Travel and check out where you would actually like to live before you sell the house and find out you made a mistake, that's what I hope to do.
@Wanda Tolbert I agree. With bad weather, fires, quakes -- it's best to think of where one can live should such an emergency arise.
This would be cool to have this as an RV.
Bob is a great and kind man. He shows what kindness can do to help others.
I love how kind, helpful and positive you always are. I have no doubt that you’ve provided hope for thousands of people. You are an inspiration.
Thank you, Bob Mahaney

From another native Baltimore resident, great advice. Overcome, adapt, improvise.
Good tips, Robert!
See what happens when you get a bunch of guys together on a project!!! ❤
OMG, I'm so thankful for this video. I'm purchasing my Sienna in a few weeks, I've been stressing about how to build the floor and carpentry. I'm so glad you made this because it takes a lot off of my mind. This is something simple that I can do. Thankful Bob and all the comments below.
Such an incredible video.
You've put it all together in a doable, affordable, practical way.
Thank you for all you guys do.
What an amazing community.
You are all so needed and appreciated.
Looking forward to meeting you all some day!
You've made it so doable.
Hugs to you all from Maine.
Any places to boondocks free in Maine?
The other great thing about this is that it doesn't all need to be done at once and can be adjusted as needed.
I just wish there were more like to help those out before becoming homeless
You take barely nothing and turn it into something easy and comfortable
You make a huge difference out there Bob! 👏👏👏
Planning on a three month cross country road trip after I finish my degree. This is the type of build I needed to see! Simple and affordable. Thank you!
I'd like to personally thank you. You are helping a lot of people achieve true freedom without draining their bank account. With home prices completely out of sight this has helped me and others incredibly.
Given my budget, this is the most useful video I've ever seen on how to start van life. Thank you Bob! Subbed.
I'm 58 yrs old, U.S. Navy vet, and have been interested in doing a project like this. Have had changes in life as we all do. Am playing it by ear right now and your video I am saving for future use. Thanks much for it. You seem real and down-to-earth.
Thank you for your service
Bob has a great heart when it comes to helping others..what a great person he is..
Better and safer to use solar and a battery inverter.
Thanks the very informative video, we did the same build. We put pipe end caps on the ends of the pipes to protect the floor (we paid 96 cents each)
Wow....suddenly RV living doesn't look quite as impossible!
Love this guy !
He really cares and realizes how expensive rent is these days and a lot of people through no fault of their own find themselves homeless !
He has faced this situation himself and is passionate about helping others !
A true blessing to all 🙂👍😇
Thanks Bob from the bottom of my heart ❤️
All the best buddy 😎
Thanks so much !!!
The absolute best no build ever. That idea for the legs priceless!!!💯
Thanks for this information!👏💜
The tip re: Amazon gift wrap.
Yes, but I think you underestimate the immense force. Half of that stuff will end up flying around, anyway.
I mean, seat belts have ripped right off.
I bought a futon and put that in my van, it worked awesome. The two middle feet were floating. PVC is a great idea.
Bob, you are a gift to humanity. Thank you for your kindness ... and the empowerment you just gifted me with. ❤ Love you!
I just love Bob! He's the man... The videos he does really are uplifting, especially for those folks who are without homes, etc.
There are so many folks who would help those who are attempting this way of life. To have a place to lay your head at night and be protected from the elements and creatures is a game changer. 😊
Did a similar "no-build" in my SUV in prep to outrun hurricanes in FL. Pays to be prepared!
