Im just a 56 year old farm mechanic but thought id share this tip. When you are having a hard time seeing the oil on a dipstick you can sprinkle baby powder on the dry dipstick and shake off any access. Then recheck the level and you will have a very accurate view.

  • @CedarPass

If it's ~ 30 PSI at a cold start (overnight cooling) and then you find that the pressure is around 0 to 10 psi @ idle after about 10 miles of driving (such as when the engine is running but you're at a stop light), you'll need to change the oil pickup tube o-ring. It's sucking air/not pumping the necessary oil because of a bad seal/busted/stretched-resized o-ring. In this case, the oil pressure "low" warning is REAL - and you need to fix it ASAP.
Provided your instrument cluster gauge is working correctly - and your oil pressure sensor is working correctly - and your wiring/ECM is not screwed up/busted, the general procedure (after raising/supporting the vehicle) is:
    1) Drop the front differential/axle.
    2) Take off the oil pan bolts (including the super-long ones where it meets up with the transmission) along with the oil pan itself. If the oil pan gasket has never been replaced you'll need to drill out the rivets which keep it attached (or risk re-using it and discovering a leak at some point in the near future).
    3) Remove three bolts mounting the pickup tube / suction screen.
    4) Remove the bolt holding the pickup tube into the oil pump intake tube.
    5) Remove the stale, malformed, out-of-round orange/red-ish colored o-ring on the oil pickup tube.
    6) Replace the o-ring with an OEM or high quality/perfectly spec'd NEW o-ring (aside from new oil and a new oil filter, here's the big $$ part of the job...it'll cost you a total of ~3 to 4 bucks).
    7) Re-install the pickup tube assembly and bolts.
    8) Put everything back together in reverse order, making sure to use gasket sealer around the points where the oil pan meets up with the transmission.
(I think those are all the steps...but do your own research to be certain)
If you do all this and still observe super-low oil pressure, you've got some potentially serious internal problems with your engine. This could (at the lower-cost end of the problems) be a bad oil pump. At the higher-cost end of potential problems, you're looking at blocked oil passages inside the engine...such as sludge because you didn't change your oil for 15,000 miles. You could even be looking at blown-out/damaged crank shaft journals. It could be a lot of things...and they aren't cheap to fix.
With the engine running, if there are NO tick-tick-tick sounds coming from under your valve covers (e.g., lifter knock), and you found no metal pieces in your oil pan during disassembly, I'd suggest you didn't have enough oil, you had the WRONG oil, or you had a coolant/oil combo in the system, or you didn't properly diagnose the problem before undertaking the o-ring fix.

I had a code for oil pressure switch come on two days after white smoke comes from the exhaust on start up but goes away after starting it. I have a tick on the driver side and I assumed it was the exhaust manifold. Then the engine light came on and it is for the pressure switch. Any thoughts what could be wrong other than the oil pressure switch ?
There are no signs of a blown head gasket (no milky oil/temps are normal). The truck is a 2009 5.3 and is used to tow a 3500 lb camper. Oil was changed less than 5k ago but I noticed it was low and added about 2 qts to get it back up to normal levels. There are no signs of an external oil leak to cause that much oil to be missing unless towing really does burn that much oil?

I see this alot some cars have oil leaks others show no visible leaks and when I talk to the car owner alot of them never check their oil they have it changed when it's time some manufactured say a certain amount of oil lose is the way the engine operates so I show them how to check their oil and explain how important it is to do so I'll even write down what oil to put in if they need some on the airbox with a paint pen but some cars don't have dipstick which is stupid if it's a workable fluid it needs to be checked

HELP PLEASE.. I got 40 psi start up cold idle. Warmed up I got 20psi idle and 30 psi driving. I have changed oil and it's full and I have changed the pressure switch and screen. Had dealer do the work and manual check shows 60 psi pump pressure. Problem is even at 40 psi gage pressure my check engine light comes on and scan shows PO521 oil pressure switch. I also used seafoam to flush engine still get 40 psi cold and 20 psi warm with 30 psi warm driving and check engine still coming on after clearing it and at 40 psi gage pressure.Any suggestions as to what could be problem.

There is no Oil Level instrument on these motors, only a dip stick. The oil pump discharge pressure will drop with a low level & the pressure switch is factory tuned to compensate for viscosity & temperature fluctuations.
