She is wonderful, I won tickets from a local radio station to see her, I had but my husband had not and she is his favorite, he is disabled and I was able to take him in his wheel chair he was never so happy. It made me cry to see him so happy. Thank you Melissa you were wonderful!!

All the best love songs are about hope, devotion and loss. This has devotion nailed. Shelly? Keats. Pfft. Do you hear the words coming out of this woman's mouth? Dear Jesus. It's very hard for me not to cry when I hear this and I am grown assed man. I have no words for this, really. Devotion. Laid out in perfect cadence and fully explained to anyone with a heart. In 3:57. If she never wrote another song in her life, she would be a legend. This, kids, is what poetry is for. And this is what it sounds like.

It’s funny, I’m so glad how far we’ve come just in the past 20+ years. It was 94-95 when I first fell in love, and couldn’t be open about it. As glad as I am how far we’ve come, I can’t help but feel the younger generation takes it for granted, but I guess that’s a good thing. If they don’t feel they have to hide who they are or whom they love, I guess we did our job; even if we still have a way to go.

@@j.p.6932 we definitely went through a lot for this generation to not have to. It was hard and I hid my gf in high school and then my sexuality completely for years because society said it wasn’t right. Now I’m out loud and proud but it’s been a long hard road to get here.

I hear you 100%. I mean, my first boyfriend from HS is still in the closet and married with kids (but fools around with guys on the side). It took me until 24 to actually come out (and I was actually outed by a doctor), but it ended up being one of the best things to ever happen to me.
I still run into the occasional bigot or zealot, but my days of hiding who I am or whom I love are over.

My girlfriend got all excited & telling everyone sitting near us that that was her she dedicated the song to. I think kurt cobains work is genius but a musician with rhythm can do the guitar parts justice.. when it comes to writing the music on the other hand I have more respect for those like the Beatles and many others who can take chords anybody can play and turn it into such original brilliant melodic music as a apposed to bands who play a million notes a second and accomplish no where near as much musically and creatively speaking. So I think we are on the same page, just a misunderstanding bud

I'm from the UK but was living in America for awhile in the 90s and would hear this song all the time on MTV, and totally loved it. It was the first time I'd heard of Melissa and her music, and what an introduction! I was then lucky enough, thanks to my boyfriend at the time, to get to see her live at Jones Beach on Long Island. We were running a bit late getting there and I was running to get to our seats in the stadium and she was already playing this song. As I ran into the arena seating area, looking towards the stage, I saw Melissa, arms outstretched, red silky shirt billowing in the warm summer breeze, with the water in the background, lights twinkling onstage. That image is burned into my brain and I'll never forget it. It was so exciting!! I got to see lots of concerts while I was in America as my then boyfriend was a music store manager and had connections in the industry, but of all the gigs we went to, for me Melissa's was the best. I love her!

The thing that always gets me juuust a wee bit misty eyed is how she makes us feel how good and liberating it felt the first time she ever belted those two stanzas, "I don't care what they think, I don't care what they say..."
Ripped from a deep, aching spot in a girl who probably did indeed care very deeply and was very affected and hurt by the thought of people potentially hating her and wanting to harm her simply because she wanted to love and be loved. Her first 15-20 years on this planet were probably exceptionally difficult, simply because she wanted love, and had to wonder why she was different, and why people wanted to make her feel inhuman, immoral, or simply incorrect for wanting to share love with another person.
She makes me understand just a tiny bit by how powerful, avid, and raw the conviction feels when she sings those two lines. Two simple, incredibly powerful lines. It always moves me, perhaps it also moves you.

Soho Joe, She’s not old in this video, Joe. Melissa is a year, give or take, around my age. This video was uploaded 10 years ago. And, more than likely, this performance was way before that. I used to watch the “Official” video of this song on VH1, when it came out (so to speak). Pun not intended. 😄. Trying to recall when that was. It had to be in the 1990s, bc I’m fairly sure that VH1 went off the air, permanently. Of course, I could be completely insane. NOT. 😉. I could actually be misremembering. But, my long term memory is usually quite good. If I was in my 30s then, then, so was Melissa. That’s not terribly old. Not like, being close to 60 is.
And, unless you were just a kid, 4 years ago, you probably wouldn’t say that. Haven’t you ever heard that old saying, “Never trust anybody over 30.”? Years old, that is. Maybe you were just waxing Philosophical?
Thanks 😊 for reading my rant at old age, already here, for me and Melissa. NOW. but, not THEN. One question? Have you been following her career, this whole time? If not, she’s got so much MORE AWESOME music! But, yes, she looks older, as do I. But, she’s still gorgeous to me. Always will be. Go, find her, and Listen. 🎵 😉

Never really looked at her before despite loving this song. She’s actually pretty and wears age well...maybe it’s the teeth 😊
