The sparkle in Tracy's eyes when she starts singing is pure magic.
Look up her performance of this song in 88 at wimbledon for nelson mandelas 70th bday. First time thr world saw the song performed for the first time.
Her eyes!!!!
Her twinkling eyes and dimples are as beautiful as ever! What a performance by these two - absolute perfection ❤️
Love her smile when she starts singing ❤
She looks happy. And that makes me happy. I don't know her backstory but the words of her songs always seemed to me to come from a place of pain. They are beautiful, yet haunting. I'm so glad she made it and knows that her words have touched the hearts of millions.
She’s holding back tears as the crowd roars. She’s a total gem. They got this right. ❤
Yes, I did too
Yes! I have missed her performing.. 🙏🏽 she comes back.
They sure did! Seeing her again was the most wonderful moment of the night.Tracy is amazing and Luke admired her for years. They were great!
Poignant, Lovely.. reminiscing with joy❤
Gives me goosebumps seeing the emotion on her face.... everytime
Crazy to me how "Fast Car" managed to stay relevant after all these years. It's a testament of how beautiful and poetic Tracy Chapman's songwriting and performances are. Seeing her perfomance at the grammys made me cry. This song will continue to reach new generations and audiences because that's just how timeless it is!
It’s because so far poverty and hopelessness has existed in every generation.
The lyrics are as relevant today as they were the first time Ms Chapman sang them.
Atemporal songs,
Boa tarde ,ela é Maravilhosa sou muiitoooofã dela
Que Voz lindaaaa
The way he looks at her, it's like he's living a dream.
Exactly... He is living his dream
He said his dad used to sing that sing as he was still a child and that's how he fell in love with it
The way Luke centred Tracy at every opportunity should be admired
He and his team gave her 100% creative control over this collaboration. They also wanted to highlight her above all else. ❤
Yes! Loved that, as well as his looks of adoration, disbelief that he was up on stage singing with her, and her almost constant grin and obvious pleasure.
This is what struck me the most. He could have overpowered her. But he had the humility to back her up instead
he just kept staring at her all the time and miming the words as she was singing them it almost made it unwatchable
@@phanders6236 It's called staying in sync.
Tracy's smile, how she keeps looking at Luke, the shy vibe, the respect from Luke, the attending celebs belting the lyrics. Everything about this is just beautiful.
🤨hmmm......we clearly did not watch the same video. Unless it's opposite day in your world? 🤔
Indeed! Lovely!
@@silkysifaka1908And you look miserable doing you.
Your a wordsmith. And I'm normally anti-cover but this is outstanding. my fav cover is Elton John and George Michael 'don't let the sun go down on me'
@@silkysifaka1908this is doing you 🤢
You can see in Luke's face that he is living his childhood dream. Singing his favorite song with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys. Good job kid, you made it
I felt this with him! Just amazing humility and respect!!
So proud of him.
Yes. Thats the "I made it" face
Awesome
That, and he also knows what he's singing about, even though they aren't his words. He understands what this song is about, and what an honor it is to be performing it live with the woman who wrote it.
Luke respects her and it shows.
Gotta give a huge amount of credit to Luke Combs for playing the pedestrian role of this duet so incredibly well, he made sure that Tracy was the focus of this performance!
He could have blown her vocals into the background noise and pulled it back about 75%. Says a lot about him as a musician and human being
@@user-cv3fo7zt5r Do you not know who she is Bro ?
Lol pedestrian role? It's her song
Well said…..
@@johnquinn6848 IKR 🤷🏾♀️
She still sounds as great as she did 36 years ago. And the twinkle in her eyes......... She knew she wasn't forgotten. And to see Luke sing with her........ He was living in the moment.
Wait ... what ???? Is it 36 years ago already ???? 😱
Lol! How true! 😂🤣🥲😢
And that gorgeous smile
That twinkle In her eyes omg 🥹🥹💖
When you see her smile, and even when the cameraman zooms into her hands. I couldn’t help but get emotional especially since I think every can relate to this song in some capacity when she first released it.
Her voice, after decades, still gold. Solid gold.
Incredible voice
fully agree@@mascambios
@@mascambios 100%. Not hating on him or anything, I just think that it really ruins the essence that the song has with Tracy singing by herself.
She LITERALLY sounds identical to how she did back then.
Very True!!! She is Timelessly Perfect in her Voice and B E A U T Y and has not aged- not in any way! 💐💝🎶
She looks and sounds great. I think she assumed we’d all forgotten about her. No, Tracy, we didn’t forget.
Amen to that!❤
..like not EVER!!
How is it possible that she somehow sounds even BETTER now? I listened to this album a million times when it came out and her voice has acquired a little bit of rasp and patina and it adds warmth to the sound.
And her voice goes great with Luke's rich baritone.
I don't think a month has gone by since the early 90's that this song hasn't been in my tape deck, in my CD player, on my mp3 player, or now in my playlist.
The music industry forgot about her until it became fashionable and on trend to remember her.
One of the greatest songs ever written, Tracy is timeless
Tracy Chapman is 60 years old and her voice is still just as beautiful as it was when she was 24.
i'd go so far as to contend that she's even more beautiful than ever, and that her voice is sounding better than ever as well. magical!
She looks amazing ❤
Right?🔥🔥🔥❤️
Ela está incrível, linda aos 60, muito jovem, impressionante! ❤
Her skin is lovely too! With my Scandinavian genes I am aging like an avocado .
This what the Grammy should be about. Timeless songwriting, timeless talent. Beautiful music. Period.
It used to be just like this....maybe the people who run the GRAMMY show will see what happened with this performance and get a clue.
Maybe.
Exactly!!!
Academy awards take note. Timeless. Transcendent. Not political.
I wish! Now they reward garbage like Taylor Swift and Mylie Virus. This is true musicianship!
milie virus😂😂😂@@backintheday3097
Big respect to Luke for showing that you can preform competently with an idol of yours and fan-out at the exact same time.
You could kinda tell he was just constantly telling himself "sing like the big man you actually are, not like the little boy you feel like you are in your hero worshipping head."
Imagine standing on stage with her as she starts that guitar strum she's done 100,000 times ...
Yes, their voices compliment each other perfectly ❤ Beautiful performance
Yep!🎉❤
@@Iknowrite411fr they harmonize so well
Who woulda thought. From being sung this song as a young boy. To singing it yourself, then performing the song of your childhood with your idol who made it. LOL life goes crazy.
Thirty seconds in as the crowd cheered, you could see her face light up and her eyes smile.
Luke is looking at Tracy like “did I do good mama”. He is awestruck and I don’t blame him one bit. Living his dream fr
💝💞🩷💕💖🌹💐🌷
Tracy chapman aged like fine wine
Indeed..she's beautiful
I’ll confess, I did not know that she was still alive.
Love those dimples!
Money has a tendency to do that
Like a very fine wine.
According to me this was the best performance of the 2024 Grammys. No attention-seeking, lights, bells and whistles. Just music. Thank you Tracy and Luke.
Just attention seeking taylor swift.
I'd be honored if some fans of late 70s/early 80s groove would take a listen to my low-fi acoustic piano & vocal performances of SAIL ON by the Commodores, SEPTEMBER by Earth Wind & Fire, and THE PINA COLADA SONG by Rupert Holmes on my YT in tribute to the legends. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and keep on grooving in the '020s.
for me, it was the best ever.
Don’t need a grifter to come along and take credit singing a classic song. Write your own music.
@@finnickrinzler8907 lmao literally all she did here is sing along to a song she loved. I'm not even a Swift stan but I have to step in here and blame the cameraman/producer for insisting on a cutaway lmao
I am blown away by how Tracy’s voice is just as it was when she first recorded Fast Car. Beautiful performance.
Amazing facts about this performance:
1.) Luke gave Tracy absolute total control over the entire performance. Told her she called 100% of the shots.
2.) Tracy only asked for all of her original band mates to be a part of the performance. That’s not Luke’s band. That’s not even the band Tracy has performed with for the few times she has appeared over the past 10 years. Every musician there from the drummer to the violinist was part of the original instrumental ensemble that Tracy had when she originally came out with this song over 30 years ago.
3.) Tracy flew into Los Angeles to rehearse this song with Luke and the band, and as soon as this performance was over she left the building and was back in a plane to her home 2 hours later. She refused all interviews, signings, parties, and business offers. She said she came only to pay tribute to Luke.
This is why this is an iconic performance. Absolute respect for the artistry here.
Oh wow like we give two bitch shits matey
Thank you for sharing this! This performance is truly special! Tracy is class... a rarity!
This needs more likes
And Luke looks so impressed and proud to be there on the same stage as Tracy. He’s showing lots of respect. And what a beautiful voice that man has 😮
Thanks for that ❤
You can tell that Luke gave credit where credits is due.
It feels like such a rarity amongst the big egos of major recording artists.
And having the time of his life too.
Not to mention you can tell on Luke's face how this song and moment both speak to him
Lol he's friggin fanboying and lip syncing her parts. She's definitely a musical inspiration of his.
Agreed 👍

The thing that stands out the most is Luke looking over watching Tracy the whole time just like the rest of the fans in the crowd..
And mouthing every word Tracy is singing, total fan
Probably one of the best performances of the Grammys...ever. They didn't need a lot of musicians, dancers, or backup singers. Just the two of them singing from their hearts was all that was needed. The respect Luke showed for Tracy was priceless. Just what this country and world needs!
ummm oook great ur right but they had 5 + members playing in the band so its was alot of musicians .. but luke can carry any thing great performance by the lady to
Exactly how music supposed to be i had the same thoughts
@@redshot1015 That's actually not a lot of musicians. I think the point was that the overall performance was stripped back with the vocals of Tracy and Luke being forward in the mix. It's one of the rare occasions where the Grammys live show actually got the mix right. It wasn't flash, or bombastic, or overly produced. It was just a very simple, competent performance by two talented individuals.
It was, for a lot of reasons, the best performance of the night.
Just WOW! Such an amazing performance

Ironic that the best performance of the Grammys of the past 20 years doesn't have any of dancers, crazy outfits, pyrotechnics and nothing of that stuff that put music in the second term. A reminder that you only need true musicians singing from the heart.
A lot of today’s music doesn’t have a soul.

I hated him for doing this song. I believed this song should never be touched. I didn't give it a chance and now I thank Luke for honoring the song and Tracy. I was wrong. Thank you Luke
Luke has treated his covering of this song so gracefully. He's paid respectful homage to Tracy's art and introduced a whole new generation to her greatness, never trying to portray ownership of the song one time. It makes me emotional to this day as my dad who passed away in 2022 had SO much respect for her in the late 90s so we would sit in his truck and listen to all of her hits until they were done. I know he would have been thrilled to see her now. 🥰 I smile/cry (depending on the day) when I hear this version now. We love you Rick. Miss you always and think about you tons and tons.
Glad they finally got this duet on RUclips. I was tired of only having the "tv recordings" people did.
The Grammy site has this whole version! (I watch it every day 😂)
Me too!!! Surprised it was posted here on YT! Thank you Grammysss!❤❤
Same here!❤😂
I actually like the one that the woman recorded while being there. Was such a highlight.

Probably the best piece of American popular music written in the past 50 years. A story of hardship and heartbreak and hope, beloved the world over regardless of race or generation. The roar of the crowd is a testament to this song's unique and enduring place in American life. What a gift Tracy Chapman has given us!
And this song is what some people are going through in their lives 😞....
What a great testament to these Icons.
Absolutely!!!
You need to check out Steve Earle’s music before making a statement like this. Earle is the greatest songwriter in American history. Start at the beginning. 1986’s Guitar Town.
@@bobbyjacobs8446 the op's a clown. Guys just sensitive
I didn't watch the grammys, but stumbled on this video, it brought tears to my eyes, when I say Tracy , loved that song growing, hearing luke combs singing, he did a great job of bringing that song back to life
She still looks amazing. And her voice still sounds like the first time I heard it in the 80s. Tracy Chapman is a goddamn legend.
That’s the same thing I was thinking and her humility is even more beautiful. I love her!
When you were sure of yourself, you can be humble . . . And that is beauty. Isn’t that what Fast car was all about❤
Rather hear this that Taylor swifts crap any day. Tracy shows how it's done. Without auto tune
@V3ganBr33 There's no need to put someone else down in order to attempt to uplift another. There's room both Tracy Chapman and Taylor Swift. If for some reason you prefer the music of one over the other, then listen to what you like. But putting someone else down isn't necessary to give a compliment.
She is so beautiful here.
She’s definitely blinking back tears as she first starts singing… the look of gratitude from the cheers.. raised eyebrow in surprise.. wonderful that she had this moment..peers and fans cheering loudly..!
100% true statement. Luke was giving her full credit for the song and clearly in awe to be singing with her. But she looked every bit as thrilled to be there with him and grateful that through him her song meant so much to so many people.
Two great entertainers....no politics. Crowd is into it. So was I.
So beautiful 🫶
🤦
I'm a young musician and I saw pretty much the exact same thing, the cheers from the crowd, big time respect from Luke Combs, and there was Taylor Swift standing alone and singing evert word of the song. What a magical moment.
Luke looks like he never wants this moment to end so beautiful
He really does. 🙂
I remember when this song came out, driving in my new Trans Am, just out of college. I close my eyes, and I'm there.. ❤❤❤
No annoying fireworks. No fancy costumes. No weird dancing lights. Just raw, pure, singing, full of emotion and meaning. This has been, and will be, a song that 90% of the world feels in their soul no matter how many times it is played. Thank you for sharing an official version of the performance.
Why would you want all of that for this kind of performance lol
Definitely feel it in the soul 😢
80s. It came out in 1989
I was about 22 when this song came out. The first time hit like a sledgehammer of emotions. To this day, it still makes my eyes leak.
The song is just as relevant now, as it was when it was originally recorded.
Respect To The goddess Tracy Chapman. Still sounds sweet like a vintage wine
Indeed!🎉
They finally posted it! The world has been waiting for the whole performance from the Grammys to be posted, not someone's version recorded on their phone. Thank you recording academy for finally putting this on RUclips!
Exactly what I was thinking. I was looking for it every day starting with the night of the Grammy's.
It will get the most views out of all the 2024 Grammy performances.
Yeah I was just telling my mom I haven't been able to find the whole performance the other day.... I'm definitely grateful that I finally got to see it!
Yes. I’ve been waiting. ❤
Yes!!!!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
THEIR DUET MAKES ME TEAR UP. They were AWESOME
What's really so very sweet is the way Luke looks at Tracy Chapman with wonder, adoration and a bashfulness that makes him duck his head when she smiles back. And Tracy Champman's delight in HIS joy and their performance together. It's simply a love fest from the heart.
That's part of why we love it so much! (besides the awesome song and their great sound!) A big part- there is so much heart here!
Absolutely perfect way to put that
I love him ❤ And this is one of my favorite songs of all time. I just love it and I never thought I could find someone that could sing it like her, but in his own version. And just as amazing..... Both of you guys ROCK ❤
He's in awe of her talent. They sound so good together. I'm looking forward to more duets with these 2.
a message for the future generation. dont let this song die.
And you better treat this Song with respect!
Please! 🙏 This Song MUST Live Forever!
This song will go on eat
This song is a notice to ALL Artists who use to compose peripheral songs that decay after a short while. Try to release these kind of melodious and durable songs, with highly deep, constructive and natural message. Don't forget to #VisitRwanda!
We love this song and we knew it before Luke covered it. Don't you worry about that
The way Luke was mouthing every word when he wasn't singing....😊❤
Man, I'm gonna tell you. I saw this original video on MTV. When I was in high school and I was always fascinated by it. What an amazing duet. Thank you Tracy for agreeing to do this and thank you Luke for thinking this up. Gosh it's really great seeing you guys perform together. I wouldn't have thought your voices would match up like that. It's quite good
She’s even more beautiful now -didn’t think it was possible. Her eyes, smile and voice. Unreal.
This is the America I thought we lived in. So much love and respect between Tracy and Luke. Let's get back to this place.
From your mouth to God’s ears
If only 🙏
Wish Kamala team would have them at conference. It shows stability, humanity, talent and America at finest.
Fire Trump! There, done.
Cette belle époque est fini est malheureusement nous avons perdu cette insouciance. Le demons humains ne se cache plus ..peace🎉
I'll never get tired of watching this performance! Her excitement at hearing the crowd cheering for her, him looking over at her in awe and with so much respect. Truly a performance that will stand the test of time, and one of the best ever on the Grammys IMO.
So wonderful to see the inimitable Tracy Chapman perform. Luke seems in awe of singing with his idol. Beautiful performance!
Simply the BEST performance that night at the Grammys !
It really WAS!! Such a nice surprise! Now I can't stop playing Tracy's music again, like when she first started her career!
*Tracy, who's a very private person, gifts us with this live performance with Luke. Amazing, amazing artists and human beings!*
Can you imagine that phone call?... just how humble and gracious Luke must've been. It's astounding.
Another 666 thumbs up.
Same exact thing I said- she could have *easily decline because she's such a private person, glad she accepted the invitation though!!!👍*
You can tell she appreciated the love she was getting at the start of the song
Tracy Chapman ist 60 Jahre alt und ihre Stimme ist immer noch genauso schön wie mit 24 und sie hat eines der schönsten Lächeln aller Zeiten!!!❤️🎶😊
I concur ❤
Chapman’s voice has actually gotten sweeter over the years. How does that happen? The slight grittiness to her younger voice made the original recording even more touching, and I miss it. Still, an amazing duet.
She has the warmest smile that I have ever seen.
YES! She lit up that whole huge room!
I remember the first time I heard Tracy sing this. 1984 at the Nameless Coffeehouse in Harvard Square Cambridge Mass. I was working as the light and sound tech, and she was a regular performer at the Nameless. My heart fell silent as I listened to her that night. She had released this song along with several others on a local label, and it was an instant local hit. When she won several Grammys 5 years later I was not surprised.
She started out as a street musician in Harvard Square playing in the main entrance of the Co-op. It was an honor to have worked with her back then, and to see her reach the heights of fame. And here it is 40 years later, and as I sit here watching her perform my heart fell silent again. I am in complete awe of who she is.
❤❤❤
What a cool experience, thank you for sharing your beautiful memory ❤
!
Listening to Behind the Wall live was haunting.
I remember going to the record to get the cassette.@@Kis-met
Seeing Tracy Chapman with gray hair dates me. I loved this song when it came out and like that Luke Combs honored the original.
