My ex sent me this song many years ago along with you can sleep while I drive.
It was mutual understanding when we spilt, that she wanted to explore and see other people when she came out. I never put up a fight, I just dealt with the heart ache, sucked it up, put on a brave face each time she came to find me, and I learned to move on, it was tough emotionally.
Years later came back to see me on a few occasions, she was not happy with where her new freedom took her, and her new partner was not very nice, she had mentioned that one partner was like me, with a big smile on her face. And I thought why look for me in other people.
I missed her, but she would have never picked me so I did the hardest thing and went full no contact.
She was my first real love and that I’m thankful for, even if at times she was a douche bag 🤣
I hope she found love and happiness she deserves it.

I never get tired of Melissa etheridge. Is such an incredible songwriter, singer, and be musician. I pray that somewhere in my future I will find a woman who has as much passion and as deep of love for me as Melissa has had for her girlfriends. PS- her book was incredible 2, and really helped me deal with my sexuality and the accompanying emotions- fear, shame, embarrassment, etc . The words her pastor shared with her front me great comfort because I realized that he was right. God would not have created a love that is wrong. If you hate someone just because of who they love, then it seems to me that you are the one with the issue and you are too self-righteous and hypocritical to understand what it really means to be a Christian.
The feeling is overwhelming. LOVE. What do you do when you have nowhere to put it? An enormous amount of energy that will ultimately get suppressed one way or another leaving scars and triggers so deep that you may never love again.

I saw some in Fall 1996. Saw them again in Jan 1997. Hooked up, fell in love and for 2 years, tried to find a way to be with them. After I did not have the guts to say how I felt, they gave up and met someone else (they have been together since); I saw them both in 2017 (visiting their state on purpose). I broke down (while they went to the washroom and the waitstaff asked how long it had been). I have been in a long term relationship since then but never got over that person (27+ years). This song, when it came out, and now allows me to for a few minutes put on that brave face. Like someone else earlier in the comments stated they have to move across the country; I moved out of the country (13 years ago) and still not over them. Next life, I guess. Thank you for this song, Melissa (and for the 'The Letting Go' and 'You Can Sleep While I Drive').
This song resonates with me. I drove a few times to my ex's house and parked outside at night and cried. Once I saw him through the living room window sitting at the table with a group of friends playing cards (or poker?) and I remember how much it hurt. Great song , the facts of life when someone truly loves a person they will do anything to just see them again or one last time.
If I didn't already love this song and hadn't already seen the video, I would say it was the definition of being in a relationship with a narcissist--like how it feels being the one "trapped" by a narcissist and in that first few hours or days after you're discarded.

Got to see Melissa in concert a few month ago. Before this song started, she commented that it came from a time of a lot of unhealthy decision-making. She made a jest about the crowd who listened to the song when it first came out probably did the same unhealthy decision-making, but I can't remember exactly what she said. But she has really maintained high quality performance, vocals, everything. You will never doubt that you're hearing Melissa Ethridge when her vocals come in, and this song will forever be iconic.

After all these years of listening to this song its still hits true..Reading other comments about Lost loves and the what if's..I met a old Girlfriend 26years after we spilt..We met and chatted it it felt like we had never moved on from each other..I was young again for a few days..We visited places we went too as a couple in the 70s..Listened to some Music that meant so much then to us..BUT I was married and she in all reality had just left the guy she left me for..many decades before..Do I still love her in my own way...Ofcourse I do..I prefer to remember how we were many years ago...
