I spent the past 7 months traveling through japan and shooting hundreds of videos on iphone 15 pro in HEVC H.265 in Apple Log. Can you make a video about Prores vs Prores Proxy vs H.265 Log on iphone?
I’ve done audio engineering for years but, my work needs additional online content. I’ve been watching all kinds of tutorials online and I love how this is straight to the point and easy to understand. Thank you dude! My biggest struggle right now is that whenever I shoot video and apply any sort of filter (even if lightly applied) I get these really bad “shadow gradient things” that I can’t seem to get rid of. Whether it’s a sky or the corner of the room it’s like the colors or shadows are all the sudden running on PS2 graphics and you can see them “block-ily” transition into one another. Is that an exposure issue? Is that what you’re talking about when you say “Always expose for your highlights”? And what do you mean by that exactly? Sorry, if that’s a lot.
Thanks so much Jon, I do my best to make sure each to tutorial gets to the point fast so I really appreciate it! No worries, I'll do my best to help figure out the problem, just got a couple questions! 1. Are you shooting in prores log or just the regular color profile? 2. What editing software do you use? 3. What LUT are you using to color grade? And when I say expose for the highlights you typically want to make sure that the brightest parts of your image (the sky for example) don't look over exposed or blown out. It may be a couple of issues below. Double check in your camera settings and in the "Record Video" setting that HDR Video is turned off. This is on by default and it can cause a lot of issues when color grading, and maybe things look over exposed or contrasty.
Why is ProRes Log is too noisier than the Rec.709? I've tested with blackmagic app and default app, same footage under same light condition and ISO 55, the Rec.709 is much cleaner than even after color graded footage of ProRes Log.
I'm not sure there is, although you can download a free version of DaVinci Resolve and add luts to your footage! www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwzN-vBhAkEiwAYiO7oO9V7PGQL1EAAIn0fipeqgS12oBjBX5coaOMVqaE-e0ZQuBwZgwaTxoCpc4QAvD_BwE
Thanks for mentioning! After watching his video, Gerald Undone is undoubtedly correct. However at a high iso especially on such a small camera sensor, I can only imagine there will be more noise. With that being said I will have to test it out at iso 1250 and see how the footage looks after color grading and eventually make another video on that!
@@MomentTutorials Hey mate, log has native ISO (ie Slog 3 on an A7s3 is 800), iphone log will have its own too, if its 1250 youll get the most dynamic range and cleanest image.
I do at times when I want to use an nd filter, but when I just want a simpler shooting experience with no filters, I just crank up my shutter speed. While it does break the 180 shutter rule, in my opinion it's all about filming the way you like!
you have to first apply colorspace transformation node to transform apple log. then you can use lut - at the end of the nodes chain. incorrect procedure described in your video leads to significant picture information losse and colors destruction.
Your comment doesn't provide much information either. So to what exactly do you want him to transform the color space? And that also changes which LUT you can put on the end. Doing tweaks on his LUT node doesn't destroy any information, it's still all there at that point. It might not be the most organized way to grade, but it's not terrible and there's no information loss.
Have any questions about ProRes LOG? Let me know in the comments!
Is there an app on windows to edit apple prores footage?

Is there a player for macos which allows to apply lut to view apple log videos with the lut applied?

Instead of using the Moment Pro camera app, would it be possible to get the compressed ProRes codec in the Blackmagic camera app?
You can yes, I believe they have the same available codecs in their app
@@MomentTutorials Thanks for your reply! I know you recommend using Proxy, but what are your views on LT as an alternative codec?
Can i import display lut preview in the moment app?
We're currently working on that feature :) Should be available within the next month!
you actually get more dynamic range with iso 1250
I only see prores HDR on my iphone 13 pro, I can't find log anywhere in the settings///
You need either iPhone 14 or 15.
Is this the same as RAW?
Not quite. LOG is just a profile that gives you more dynamic range while recording, raw is the unprocessed data captured from your camera
Gerald undone says best dynamic range is at iso 1250. Who’s right?

You don’t set shutter speed at double your FPS?

@@MomentTutorials oh cool thanks :)
Is it possible to use capcut?
Kinda yes, you have to add luts form laptop because you cannot add them from phone app. Plus you can always edit it directly from the photos app

What is lut?
Kind of color filter!
You lost me at record in Prores proxy.
I personally love recording in ProRes proxy haha, still a 10-bit 422 image with more than enough flexibility for color grading
Can you record videos in CDNG RAW format? @@MomentTutorials
