I am so glad someone did this! I have tested most of the same papers and have come up with the same conclusion. I have found what I think is a #4 1/2 maybe even a #5 AND is also very inexpensive. It is Hammermill Premium Color Copy Cover 100# 271g/m2. You can find it on Amazon in 8 1/2 x 11 inch 250 sheets for only ~$17.00 US
This video convinced me NOT to get the foiling system. I’m not interested if I can’t use most of the papers I currently have in my stash. You saved me $200, and I’m so grateful.
Try Hamilco Semi Gloss on Amazon. It comes in 80 & 100lb. It's not as glossy as photo paper. Is a good value and does great with stamping, ink blending, and all foiling. You will not be disappointed.
Your instructions are excellent. I have learned to STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT IF and just experiment. As my husband reminds "nothing ventured , nothing gained. Keep safe dear. Thankyou
Awesome informative tutorial, Yana. I never would have guessed YUPO and would have been afraid of it melting. I know you're the Queen when it comes to hot foiling and always take your advice. Thanks dear!
Thank you. Looks like photo paper is winner for me as I tried it now and was easy to get negative image easily without much efforts and quick. we have lots of photo paper left. My foiling results were fine on other papers. One of them was Mondi brand 200 gsm (bought for Minc foiling) which almost has a coating on top so positive images foil well, for negative I have had hit and misses.
My spouse gifted me the hot foil system and within first use it was perfection. The only expensive paper I have is Yupo and it’s only for alcohol ink. I usually buy Michaels papers 110lb cardstock. It’s more affordable and boy oh boy!!!! Perfection! I also have Hammermill smooth 110lb paper fromAmazon. Affordable and great for many things including the hot foiling.
I'd love to know how it works on Bristol Smooth cardstock (which I love to use with zigs for watercoloring etc) Thank you so much for all these comparisons! Love ya!
sooo helpful !!! thank you !!! could you do videos on the best paper for each medium ? copics, pencils, stamping, watercolor, ink blending, oxide sprays....etc ? would love to see :)
I recently got the Glimmer Foil System and realized there was a learning curve to successful foiling. This is so helpful for those of us that are experiencing difficulty. I never dreamed it could be the paper and not the "operator". Hopefully I will have better results with trying different papers. Thank you for sharing, so helpful.
Just tried it with Gina k white heavyweight pure luxury cardstock and it worked perfectly. I've not tried it before. Since I noticed the ones you tested that have the most success had a very smooth, sleek finish, this one came to mind. I'm going to order a few of the colors and give them a try
Thanks for your turorial I knew paper made a difference just didn't know I could foil on photo paper nice to know that now I like your tutorial I learn things from you
I NEVER would have considered Yupo paper! And since I love alcohol blending, I keep this paper in my stash so I must try foiling with it! Thanks Yana for such an informative video!
I always learn something new about foiling when I watch your videos. Thank you! :) I look forward to seeing you test more papers, especially colored cardstocks. (Perhaps you'll test Crafter's Companion's Super Smooth Paper?) It would also be convenient if you can find a smooth paper that foils at 5 stars out of 5 and is readily available in most countries.
Thank you for this tutorial. I've been frustrated with my foiling thinking I was doing something wrong. Well I was, I was using the wrong cardstock/paper! I need to go shopping now. Thanks again! 🤗
Excellent information, thank you. I am surprised you didn’t test bristol smooth since that is a common paper crafters have to use with watercolor markers (Tombow, Distress, Karin etc.)
TFS. I don't have any Yupo paper as it goes out of the stores here as quickly as it comes in. I'll check out the other one too. Your foiling with them was beautiful. Mostly I use Recollections paper from Michaels ( with varied results ).
Have you tested the Stampin Up Basic White and their Extra thick white paper? Also we noticed you place the die and plates etc and then pressed timer button?
I think you did an excellent job on this video with the way you conducted your tests and gave each product a grade. Thank you for that information. I was wondering if you ever foiled on black card stock? (Or other colors, but black seems like a staple.)
Extremely helpful video. As many of us would like to add ink or water color to our foiled paper, it would be helpful if you could test papers such as bristol smooth, and common brands of watercolor paper.
Can't wait till you find alllll the papers! Lol. Just tried the black typo and while good,it's not as glassy smooth as white yupo. I wonder why there's not more silly smooth\plastic-like finish on more cardstock?
Hello Yana - This video was very helpful. I was recently unsuccessfully using Neehah Solar White cardstock for this process, I thought that I was doing something wrong, thank you so much. I also have Gina K 120 lb. and Brutus Monroe 130 lb. cardstock, would you be so kind as to test those papers as well as if possible, both are advertised as smooth.
Hi Yana, thanks for this insightful video! Could you please test different brands of colored cardstock as well? Such as Hero Hues, Gina K, Simon Says Stamp, Lawn Fawn... That would super nice! Thanks in advance!
Gina K heavyweight did not do that great for colored cardstock. bought a bunch after using her white heavyweight, which was good, but colored does not have that smooth, silky finish
How Bristol smooth? And tim holtz specialty stamping paper (2 papers with coatings that are ultra smooth)? And Hammermill (Lea Lawson and heather from pinkfresh- their favorite for foiling?
If you are using a typical laminator for your foiling, I’ve heard it is not good to use photo paper in them. I’ve stayed away from using it, in case they are right. Lol
I am curious to try poster board paper due to its smooth texture. Based on a recommendation from another creator, I use it in place of Yupo paper when alcohol ink blending.
Thank you Yana. I have been struggling a bit with my Neenah. I figured that was probably the best choice of all. Who knew! But I don't always want glossy paper. Will try the Hamilco suggested in one of the comments or the SSS cardstock. When I get real confident I will try the expensive Yupo. I, too, would like to see your suggestions for black and colored cardstock.
I wanted to know if you tried the Spectrum Nior Ultra Smooth Cardstock, or if anybody else has. I purchased both the spellbinders and the purple foiling systems (can't remember the name right now). I'm afraid to start foiling since it seems like so many people have had a hard time with it. I've watched a couple of youtube videos to see other's trial and error and I'm just about ready to get started. I plan to use Spectrum Nior Ultra Smooth Cardstock, to begin with since, besides yupo paper, it's the smoothest cardstock I have. I also wanted to know about colored cardstock. I have a complete stash of MFT cardstocks so that's what I would be using. Let me know if you've tried any of these. Thanks for all the inspirational videos!
Such a great review and so glad that you've posted it. I've been using yupo paper for foiling for a while. Purely by accident and such a revelation. I'm going to try foiling on photo paper soon. Cheers Lisa
Thanks for the info I will have to try my Yupo and Photo Paper. What cardstock do you normally use when foiling on color cardstock. I saw some beautiful cards you did in color for Christmas. Is there a favorite brand?
This video was very helpful. Thank you so much for the information. When using the Yupo Paper, should I still put a piece of copy paper on my hot plate? Is the Yupo paper plastic?
Thank you so much for doing this. While it is very helpful, it’s making me concerned about purchasing the glimmer machine. I hinted that I want it for Mother’s Day. I’ve been buying the hot foil plates for awhile. The reason is for my hesitation is just that I don’t want to have to buy yet another white paper. I have a hard time keeping track of all that I currently work with. A question for you is how do you foil on colored cardstock? Also, what about when you are combining foiling with other techniques such as copic coloring?
Thank you so much for taking the time in doing this great video. It is super helpful.. I do have a question. What about color paper. what will you recommend?
Thank you so much, Yana! This video is so much appreciated ❤️ I don’t have SSS 130# CS but I do have Not Your Mama’s CS from Brutus Monroe. I wonder how that will foil?
Thanks, Yana! Would you try Wendy Vecchi’s Perfect Card and Simon Hurley’s paper? Both from Ranger. I struggle with good results and therefore not using my glimmer system as much as I would like.
Thank for this video!! Great information!! 2 questions. The cardstock shim you use what weight is that 60, 80,110 lb? And how is it die cutting the photo paper? Thank you!! 😊
great questions! The shim I use is typically 80lb. The photo paper (and yupo) doesn't cut as smoothly as Neenah, but it cuts fine. The super detailed dies probably are not the best option to cut from photo paper. But a simple outline or simple shape, or a sentiment outline - that will cut.
not yet. Some colors (even from the same manufacturer) foil great, some - not so good. Spellbinders new cardstock foils relatively well (but it will not foil anything as solid as the dots used here)
Have you tried the Spellbinders Glimmer Specialty Cardstock yet? It seems odd that you do so much work with them and you wouldn't have been provided with their specialty foiling paper.
Do you have any suggestions how to removed foil around the edges of the paper outside of your die that you foiled? I have marks left behind on Neenah that are impossible to remove.
Linda, sanding eraser usually works. if that doesn't work - use a craft knife to scrape it off. If the marks are too big - re-foil, but cut the foil to size, that should help reduce the overfoiling
Thank you so much for this ... I was on the verge of selling my glimmer hot foiling system as I wasn't able to get good results no matter how hard I tried!! What would you suggest if I wanted to foil directly onto a coloured cardstock?
yes it is! You need to use heat resistant acetate. I'd tried it, it works. I have a video (not a comparison, just a tutorial) here - ruclips.net/video/apuqlDfkZRg/видео.html
Thank you! I think I need different paper as my foiling looks horrible. Like the paper you gave 2 stars to. Have to shop.
Yes! for the longest time I didn't understand why I wouldn't get consistent results. Paper matters.
I have been wondering for a while why my foiling is so awful - Neenah 110 - thank you!
I am so glad someone did this! I have tested most of the same papers and have come up with the same conclusion. I have found what I think is a #4 1/2 maybe even a #5 AND is also very inexpensive. thank you, Nancy. I will :)
Nancy is the “Empress” of foiling:)
Thank you Nancy! So glad I read the comments to add to Yana's wonderful suggestions. Who knew. I thought Neenah was the wonder paper for everything.
I too would like to see an example with the Hamilco Semi Gloss.
Hi, Nancy! Do you recommend we use the heaviest weight Hamilco Semi Gloss we can get or is the lighter weight easier to foil?
This was very helpful. I almost always foil on color cardstock, so I hope you will include that in future testing. Thank you!
Great video! Thank you Yana for making this video! Have you done similar videos for best paper to use for other craft media like Copics or ink pads?
Thank you, Margot. No, I don't have anything else like that. But it is a good idea 💡
