      I can't recall which novel it was, but one of them includes a character training to be a storm trooper. He goes to see his trainer, who throws a trident at him as if he were legitimately trying to spear him. The weapon was repelled very effectively, to the angry recruit's surprise. It was a training session to teach him what the armor can do, what it's really meant to protect from

      When the government is reviewing contractor proposals, cost is the last thing they're allowed to take into account. They first have to consider factors like can the contractor meet demand, do they have a reputation of quality, do they have a plan for meeting the KPI's, etc. If all are equal among two competitors and one can do it for less, then they'll factor in cost. Any time a contract is awarded and it appears to have been based entirely on cost, the losing bidders can file an appeal with the GAO, who will review the decision to see if they followed regulation. If not, the award is overturned, and a second round of bidding happens. This process of bid/award/appeal can go on for several months, or even over a year, during which time the previous contractor provides bridge services pending finalization award of the new contract. Been working for a government contractor myself for the past 10 years, and I've seen this play out about a dozen times so far. We are often NOT the cheapest solution, and get the contract anyways.
      Edit: Yes, I'm well aware that many contracts end up with the cheapest bidder. That's because those contracts aren't contested. The good contractors fight it. They take it to court, they appeal to the GAO, they fight tooth and nail to get it. Yes, because it's profit first, and pride second. That's how it works. So if a gov't contract gets worked by a shithole contractor...think of how shitty that deal was that no one decent fought for it. Place the blame where it's due. Civil contractors aren't the enemy.

    Storm Troopers having bad aim is a myth perpetuated by storytellers who admire ep 4. In A New Hope Storm Troopers were specifically ordered by Tarkin not to shoot to kill the main characters so they can tail them to the location of the rebel base. The admiration of episode 4 has created this belief from the fan community and story tellers following it. I personally like how Legends depicts Storm Troopers than under Disney Canon. Alot of Storm Troopers were just ordinary people just doing a job (Only the higher ups were morally evil people sending out the orders) than the cartoonish nazis we get now.

    If we made modern armor that covered as much as Stormtrooper armor while being able to stop modern rifles, it would be far too heavy to be practical. If we extrapolate this idea to the Star Wars universe (better materials, but more powerful weapons) you might get similar weight to protection ratios. You could think of beskar as something like AR500 steel which can typically stop many rifle rounds and take repeated impacts in the same spot, while clone and stormtrooper armor would be more like Kevlar, which can usually only stop pistol rounds and will be severely compromised the first time it is hit. However, Kevlar is much lighter and more flexible and easier to wear for long periods of time, which is why most police and security workers choose it over something with more protection and also more weight. Rex takes a sniper bolt to the chest and is seriously injured but survives, most likely because it hit in a place where his larger pauldron covers his chest plate, so there are two layers of armor where the bolt lands. Also, in the Umbara ad inhibitor chip arcs, you can see that Fives has decided to add thicker plates over top of his regular chest and back plates. This might be like adding ceramic plates over a level IIIA Kevlar vest to make it capable of stopping one rifle round in that spot. You'll notice that most Mandalorian armor sets cover less of the body than Stormtrooper armor. (Beskar would still need to be lighter than AR500 though. That shit is heavy.)

    • @UgandanAirForce

      well I'd imagine mandolorians have less armor coverage because they'd rather have armor cover areas that would be considered fatal like your chest, head, and neck. So in universe it’s like as or heavier than steel given the same volume. The only difference, is a thin piece of beskar maintains integrity better than a thin piece of steel.

    Many people unfamiliar with plasteel and plastoid forget that in a galaxy where blasters are the most common form of weapon, the best protection will be something that diffuses the energy of the bolts. As seen in Mandalorian, Boba's Gaffi Staff literally shattered trooper armor which reveals how brittle it showing that although it may be an alloy the actual metal content is minimal.
    Blaster bolts are dangerous due to their intense heat and electrical charge. Metal conducts electricity and absorbs heat so would make for horrible armour. Imagine that each bolt of blaster fire made your armour get hotter and hotter. You'd literally burn to death given the temperatures produced by blaster bolts. However, consider UHT ceramics as a material. They are dielectric and can insulate against temperatures up to around 2000c. These are also lightweight and brittle but demonstrate exactly the kind of protective qualities needed in a galaxy, far, far away.
    The simple fact is that although you see troopers go down in one hit from blaster fire is because they've sustained a massive electrical shock. Something which many people could be revived from if given prompt medical attention.

      @KryyssTV 3 года назад +20

      @@solarissv777 But you're forgetting that it's not just about the force of the impact but the force over an area. Going back to comparing plastoid with modern UHT ceramics; most HHTCs have a hardness between 21-33gPA (Gigapascals). That's just the amount of pressure they can sustain if it's spread equally across it's surface. To put that figure into perspective, if 1kg of TNT produces a 230kPA (Kilopascals) shockwave which doesn't even come close to 1 Gigapascals of pressure. So this would mean that while an impact from a Gaffi Stick or slugthrower projectile can shatter pieces of plasoid or UHTC, that is only because the pressure is applied to a very small area.

That's awesome accuracy in a combat scenario by irl combat standards. Additionally, they wouldn't have wanted to kill the heroes on the Deathstar because they wanted them to escape and lead them to the Yavin. Similar situation on Bespin, in which the heroes used cover and a smoke screen to screw their hit ratio. On Hoth they carved through any rebel infantry like a knife through butter, only failing to get the heroes when the Falcon's turret suppressed them. On Endor we have no clue what their shot to hit ratio was as it's too chaotic. But Ewoks blend into the forrest well,and are small mobile targets. Their armor protected them from ewoks, but the ewoks managed to distract while the rebels, who were commandos, were picking them off.

So after every battle the wounded stormtroopers (even though they got shot) could easily be retrieved and, cared for and were ready to fight in basicly no time. To heal a wounded trooper is (even for the empire) less expensive and faster. The big battles were all the storm troopers die were really really uncommon and happened mostly on onscreen against plotarmor heroes.

We saw that armor shattered by the forgers hammer, tusken Gaderffii (which is literally made from scrap metal), and random native alien spear sticks. Even Ewok arrows could puncture the armor. The reason war hammers where a thing, was because a sword might not go through a knight’s armor, but a hammer with a spike has the potential to pen their armor, or alternatively, could be used to give the person wearing armor a concussion, or break bones through their armor. The episode of The Mandalorian (s2e7) where Din Djarin wears the plastoid armor has a nice example of that logic used - the blaster jams (for the first time in SW), he throws it at the rebels, then later gets hit with a club twice, which both times shatters the pauldron but only bruises his arm and his confidence. That's very consistent with the armor being issued to vehicle crews - ample protection to head, neck and upper body for peeking out of a hatch or escaping a damaged vehicle, but not designed for repeated hits. Stormtrooper armor should be less bulky for ease of movement (check), cover lower torso and limbs (check), while protecting against lower-powered blaster bolts (check) and battlefield debris impacts (check). The only other time we've seen plastoid armor shatter was in the previous episode, where stormtroopers get hit with various blunt weapons (yes, a piece of metal armor or the side of a blaster definitely count) and only the very special armor-piercing stick penetrates the armor.

      Boba Fett was an "unaltered clone." They directly specify this in Attack of the Clones. So he was literally just an average person.
      Also, it's a *stick.* If the batons and staves in Rogue One couldn't break the armor, then Boba's *stick* can't do it either.

Using cover like the crates and proning behind sand dunes/ foxholes. Stabilizing their weapons by resting them on their cover or actually shouldering them. Sad to see that rarely happens in Star Wars. It’s cool to see tactics over just some over powered stuff because it makes them feel more human, they want to stay alive and know charging is going to get them killed but also let down their comrades leading to defeat of the whole battle.

Not to mention the staff he carries looks to be based on a bo staff and if you are familiar with the applications and uses of the bo staff then you know that if used correctly it can be devastating. If you don’t believe me look for videos of martial artists using the bo staff, it’s actually pretty interesting.
