Installing the Forward Berth - Episode 177 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • This video ends with Carolyn's excitement to sit on the frame she built for one of the saloon setees and we'll get a glimpse of Steve laying down on his future berth thanks to all the work shown in this week's episode.
    A water tank will go inside the space that Carolyn is fitting with one of Victoria's 100-year-old mahogany panel frames, and so it requires a little bit of beefing up. She uses some white oak pieces and locust supports that will be hidden inside the setee/berth to accomplish the goal of ensuring the water tank is properly supported. She also shares how she goes about giving a 1" rise over a 6' run to this sleeping area, which will hopefully result in the slight incline that will make all the difference for comfort.
    Meanwhile, Steve continues working on the substantial front panel for the double berth that will go into the forepeak, and after some final adjustments, brings the whole business into the boat and, lo and behold, it fits. Bunk boards of mahogany will serve to hold cushions and humans where they belong.
    We hope you enjoy seeing the interior come together, and thank you so much for watching.

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    Needless to say as a retired architect I'm very impressed by the level of wood cabinetry making being installed in this boat. Previous experience has taught me that all to often some carpenters will take cost saving 'shortcuts' were the finished work can't be observed. Ultimately it can be a very big mistake which Steve and Caroline seem to be avoiding - Arabella will undoubtedly be a better built boat when finally completed because they're doing the work correctly! There's an old saying worth remembering - "do it correctly or don't to it at all"!

    i'm an afficiando of youtube boat builds and have rarely noted so much interior work performed before the hull, power train, plumbing and electrical are finished to a greater degree. of course, it's possible that a minimalist approach to those subsystems can accomodate that approach. just an observation...sort of enjoying it, really. especially in this case as the woodwork is so lovely.

    In 60 years, someone is going to buy this boat, and they are going to get a heck of a good deal. I say that because the market value for a boat like this will be a tiny percentage of the labor and material costs that went in to it. Obviously, this project is not about making a boat you could sell at a profit. It is about the process, and having the boat. Wonderful.

    Quick question for Steve - the bunk board, extending from left to right and connected to the curved-edged board on left side of 'entrance' to berth --- why are they left at different heights? Great work on using Victoria's awesome 100-yo lumber and incorporating it back in to Arabella. Carolyn is doing a great job and has a very pleasant personality; knows her stuff, too. Looking forward each week for more progress updates!

      Hi Bill! Thanks for watching and happy Friday! This is a case of using as much of the reclaimed material as possible and to make it look as nice as possible.
      I used a triangle shaped piece for that short one, I cut very little off it. It was a tad shorter than the long one and my only other tall option was a big and nice board.
      Trying to waste as little mahogany as humanly possible!

    Just a thought. You are going to make those Bunk Boards easily removable and not fixed? Makes making up your bunk so much easier and they are not needed alongside or moored in sheltered anchorages. Loving seeing the old timber being reused, cleaned up and varnished.

    one thought on the forepeak bunk boards. That part of the boat wont be comfortable for sleeping in while under way, so maybe large bunk boards not really necessary?

    Underway in rough conditions, no crew would sleep in the forward berth. Bunk boards make it hard to get in and out of positions. Fabric Lee Cloths are better to replace bunk boards.

      Agreed

    • @David-hm9ic
      @David-hm9ic 2 года назад

      All of your statements are individually correct but consider that if nobody would sleep in the forward berth underway in rough conditions, lee cloths are unnecessary. I've been in the forepeak twice in rough conditions due to a lack of options on the vessels and it was miserable.
