Vacation Adventures and Visiting Norna - Episode 179 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • We covered a general plan for the interior in a breezy way a few weeks ago in a bonus video ( • The Floor Plan, Bonus ... ), but now that a few things are in place and the vision came into focus, Carolyn drew a scaled layout plan that is approaching some semblance of "complete." As she and Steve do a virtual walkthrough of the details... is that... A WORKBENCH?!
Finally unboxing the head and the deck prisms was exciting. We are ever so thankful to the people who have been donating funds to the wish list and made it possible for us to receive key interior items just about on time for when we'll need them. We're working on a special interior project presently for which there are a few new things on the list. Check it out: www.acorntoarabella.com/wishl...
Norna is a Danish-built, lapstrake, heavy-scantling cruising boat that our friends Kourtney Patterson and Pete Grundvig have been living aboard for the last 20 years. These Floridians have done a North Atlantic circumnavigation, and now they spend their summers in Maine. You might remember Pete and Kourtney coming to visit and help with Arabella when they've passed through on their way north or south-and it was Kourtney who burned Carolyn's dragon into the bilge stringers. Check out Kourtney's videos here: / accidentalsailorgirl They love their AirHead, and it was neat to see their installation and hear a few pointers from them... right on time.
We hope you enjoyed this week's video, which is heavy on adventure. It is a sweet reminder of things to come, and all the places we'll take Arabella. Thanks for watching and for your support.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Just an opinion here and please keep up the great work. I reckon that the head could be moved to the aft port quarter on the other side of the engine with a little extra work. Otherwise you have a head in the middle of the communal area near the galley. Then you could move the Nav station to the head's old location and turn the old nav station area and lockers into another space to use as a cabin or adhoc storage as required. The relocated nav station could also be a fold down table to give yourselves more space if required.

I think people think of New England as this flat coastal plain and don't understand that we are also dead in the middle of Northern Appallachia with amazing mountains, albiet a tad smaller than the Rockies, but beautiful just the same. I love the fact that I can drive 10 mins to the ocean, and an hr or less to the mountains, and see amazing history and beautiful pastoral scenes all along the way. We are so lucky to live in such an amazingly beautiful place!!

Any project of this magnitude will have it's ebb and flow of work ethic. I've watched this build progress for a long time and I think Steve has been persevering to the point of obsession. It's great to see him get away to recharge and exercise the whole person. And what better way to restore your frustrated sailor's soul than to see and visit some pristine examples of classic wood boats and commune with kindred souls. It even makes me want to get back down in the shop to work on some cabinets that need to be extracted from the lumber pile.

👍👌👏 Simply fantastic again and as always. I especially liked all the good advices/examples from your friends, the nice sailing experienced and boat life experienced couple onboard the gorgeous Norna. For instance: To raise the toilet for way better handling the front fluid bucket is a very important suggestion. I like their ship a lot, especially because of the green sails and tarps (I simply love nearly everything that is green).

Hey Brian, we’ve seen your comments, and throwing them all over the place, even in someone else’s sub-thread is getting to be a bit much. Rude, even. Here’s the deal: the neoliberal idea that climate change is going to be best battled by way of consumers beating other consumers over the head with guilt-based messaging is partially what’s made this crisis worse than it needed to be. The truth is, if you really care about the outcomes and creating change, we can’t buy our way out of this problem and need a system-wide movement and paradigm shift. While you cheer on one boat choosing an electric sail drive with a huge battery bank containing elements that came from questionable (and growing) mining operations, pipelines are built, corporations get slaps on the hand for huge disasters, and are able to continue doing business. The current President just opened up 80 million acres of the Gulf of Mexico for oil drilling. Be brave, indeed. Shift focus. Shift effort. Write to the right people, please. Our lives depend on it.

    Hi Steve,
Concerning the Airhead, I've used one for 3 years on my 36' Cape George Cutter. I'm really impressed with it, guests are initially skeptical...the first thing I ask them is if they can smell anything in the head, nobody has smelled any odor. The solids tank max out with over 3 persons, and the liquid tank fills up after 2 days with 2 people (Hint- don't let it get overfull!) You'll need to mix the coconut husks with water before adding it to the solids tank (see RUclips videos) and I swear that if done correctly it will take over a month to fill up! Do your solids on a paper coffee filter for minimal cleanup. Never sleep with a smelly poop tank under your bunk again!

I was a doubter until I built and used one. They work really well. Frees up a lot of space and maintenance. Properly vented, odors have never been a problem.

Steven, Robin seems to be a kindred soul to you, and I hope she’ll be your first mate on the high seas…. In a couple years.

She was designed by Havilah Hawkins, Sr. expressly for the passenger trade. All other passenger schooners at the time (and still in service) have been converted from their commercial configurations (lumber, fishing, oystering) and are beautiful in their own way.

I think you two would love the Mount Arapalis area in Victoria Australia, it has some very challenging climbs plus easier climbs and a climbing community from all over the world.

I’m a semi-full time camper. Poo is always the worst part of the trip. I like that desiccant toilet. Going to look into one of those for my trailer.

Yeah they’re really popular for trailers and tiny homes, or off-grid homes.

The head reminds me of a Clivus Multrum toilet that we could not wait to have removed when I was on our Parks Development Corporation board back in the 90s.

Great video Steve Arabella is looking fantastic she is a credit to Alix and yourself and everyone who has joined you two on this journey I also watch Kourtney's videos as well it is such a shame this is her last year producing the videos I have watched everyone I think all of Kourtney and Pete's followers will miss their videos you would have noticed Pete is quiet the craftsman himself a very gifted boatbuilder you could learn a lot off of him but keep up the good work look forward to your next video.

The Mary Day has pleasing lines, good looking vessel. I expect Arabella to be easy on the eyes too. Vacation time is NOT over rated, I am headed to Alaska in a couple of weeks.

I was going "hey below on rope, rock, rock" - glad it missed you. Anyways, this was really a great climb and it is really nice to see Robin both lead and belay in such confident manner. My best wishes to your climbing duo - you must be very happy with your climbing partner, Steve - simpliy technically, having such strong footwork as Robin has combined with well-trainned upper body must make her a perfect leader in long chimneys (and when hauling bags, he-he))) p.s. the MTB trail also looks really nice! Great trip indeed!

Unlike black water holding tank systems, a dessicating head DOESN'T smell. (Unless you're doing something wrong.) But nobody believes it until they get to experience the difference for themselves.
