Is Your Refrigerator Running? Almost! - Episode 213 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • Coach roof (cabin house) carlins are installed this week, and there's probably not much more satisfying than seeing finish go onto interior pieces before they're assembled like big-kid Lego, where they'll live all their days from here on out. Since the surface just above it will be strip built then fiberglassed, the half-lap joinery is simple and more than sufficient.
The Sea Frost refrigeration unit is unboxed on camera, and the heart-stopping process unfolds of finally putting holes into the beautiful refrigerator we've made. The condenser plates are really durable, built like slim tanks that are puncture proof. We chit chat about what kind of space should be dedicated to the boat refrigerator and freezer.
And finally, we get to preparing, hosting, and then reflecting on our very last open house here in Granby. This time next year we'll be thinking about launching this boat. More on that soon.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Watching the house roof go together was just.... it brought me to tears. It is SO beautiful! The craftsmanship is absolutely perfect. My meager skills are nothing in comparison... I spent years as a rough heavy construction carpenter where tolerances were "if it's within a quarter inch it's fine... but this has prompted me to pull out my old chisel set and take the time to sharpen them by hand, and start doing some nicer work in our old motorhome. We're refitting it to include space for our daughter, and just because I'm working with scrap materials and plywood doesn't mean I can't do nicer work.
Arabella is an inspiration to everyone who sees her, as are the craftspeople working on her. I cannot thank you enough for bringing us along for this incredible journey.

The perseverance to keep going is why I can't stop watching. Been watching since before the lofting floor went down, and Lord willing, I'll be here for the launch and any content along the journey past that. Thanks for keeping on keeping on.
Yeah, as George said at the end of the video, things have changed. We started with two guys building a boat and working their day jobs to afford to do this massive project while sharing it with whoever would watch. Then the channel caught on and spread, even more with the lead keel pour it took off. Now, one of our original guys is gone on to his own thing and we have seen numerous helpers come and go, experienced hands/shipwrights come and help, a pro videographer, a "host", and another shipwright. We've seen guest gatherings and plank parties. Now systems are going in and deck structures are just about ready for decking, the last of the hull planks are ready, and we are definitely past the half way point for sure.
I'm wondering if there will be a bung party or if it will be just the two or three folks that are there usually.
    Guess we'll see.
    Still loving the channel,
    Thomas

George's comments at the end really struck a chord with me. I think many folks are searching for a sense of constancy and a model of perseverance in uncertain and changing conditions. In this sense, AtoA is such a strong metaphor for continuing to be driven by passion, yet also yielding and flexible in the face of change.

Agreed. If you look around RUclips you can find many frim the next couple of generations that have the skills and gumption to get things done on their own. I just hope there are enough of them to keep the ball rolling, so to say. I am over 50 as well, and our grandparents' generation was way more productive than our parent's was and so on and so on. As service takes over for industrial as a means for gross domestic product, it seems fewer and fewer people know how to do for themselves. Those of us that do, need to pass this knowledge along to who ever will listen. Unfortunately, it seems, RUclips is the classroom of the future. Taking a young person into your shop and showing them, hands on, how to do things is a dying way to teach in this digital world. I am so happy they have Aaron there learning some skills. Maybe that will encourage some other kids to see what they can go learn hands on.

Hey Steve I love watching you use your large Stanly "Yankee" ratchet screwdriver. I've had mine since I started my Apprenticeship as a Church Organ Builder in 1970! (it was a present from my dad as I couldn't afford one lol) it looks as if yours is a little sticky and they can get gummed up. Try giving the two way helix a good sloosh with WD40 and work it up and down until totally free. Then dry it off with rags then a shop air blast, finally a few drops of light oil like 3 IN 1 into the ratchet mechanism and it will be good for another five years or so! Now I've watched all todays episode I will carry on lol. The fridge components look awesome especially the stainless steel (condensers?) and the idea of putting the tubes through with epoxy and making tapping fixings out of epoxy are very sound ideas the control panel is a great thing too, with enough options for cold water or tropical sailing. I love the fridge looks and design and the fact that it's construction is bespoke by yourself is a great testament to your design abilities Steve. Not long now until launch and much to do! See ya next week all!

I've been following the build of Arabella since episode 40 something. I remember vividly binge watching the first few dozen episodes after I found the channel. I can't believe how far she has come and man does she look beautiful! Just try to imagine the first night that you are afloat and away from the dock. Rolling and pitching peacefully with the waves. Laying in your bunk, looking up at the ceiling and you think, "This is mine and I made this!" Yep, it took a lot of help from a ton of people but... The sense of joy and achievement will be incredible! At the same time Steve, boy oh boy there is a lot more gray in your beard then there was when you started this project! Be safe and stay healthy Arabella crew!

I like the removable divider. Having a larger refrigerator side seems like the norm in current society but when wanting to spend extended times in remote places, the freezer space is of far greater value. Like so many other things on the boat, you built it, so you know how change it as needs arise.

Well said, George. I've been watching this channel since 2018 in far flung Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.
Others have said what I want to say, but far more eloquently than I... Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio said...
Not just the Spanish Main. The
whole ocean ... the whole world.
Wherever we want to go, we go.
That's what a ship is, you know.
Not just a keel and a hull and a
deck and sails. That's what a ship
needs ... but what a ship is --
what the Arabella really is ...
    is freedom.
    Long live your freedom, Steve.

Having installed MANY system's as a fridge mechanic, i like to install a MOVABLE 1 " thick separator, depending on what you want to freeze and or refrigerator , that way you can change the volume, i.e. you catch a big fish and are low on fresh refrigerated food, so more freezer space is needed. the separator is tight against the side's holding it in place.

As always a great episode. It has been fantastic to watch Steve's woodworking skills and knowledge of logging and lumber. I am still hoping that Arabella makes her way to the Great Lakes in the coming years.

It's really fun to see how the boat progresses more and more and that you seem to thrive together, which is perhaps the most important thing. The refrigerator looks very nice but a small detail like that you install wooden moldings. Wood in cold and humid environments easily gets dirty with the accumulation of bacteria and mold. Oil or varnish comes off quite easily after a while. Plastic or stainless steel as an alternative. Otherwise everything looks very nice and I am very impressed.

Good comment but I'd go with the cheap Dollar Stores plastic cutting boards material. This stuff is amailligly tough.

Loving the progress you all have made. Certainly marching forward to your goal. I really like this channel documenting the stage by stage of building Arabella. A fine way to finish my Friday night. Keep up the great work guys.

Next time you are at one of those box 'sell everything' stores, have a look at the toy section. You can very much get a big box of assorted LEGO pieces. ('LEGO classic' I think is the series?)
There are even silly things like a box of just wheels or just windows! The kind of thing more kids should grow up with and even as an adult they make great molds for casting. :)

    Dear Anne, Kaylyn and Steve,
Happy Friday in the first place. We did love to join your live vlog for the open day. We hope you found some time to look at Dick’s email with just a few examples of what he made out of wood. We admire who invented the way to make the compartment spaces for the fridge and the freezer adjustable what makes you with long or with short trips with Arabella a lot more flexible. We wish you lots of success with the rest of the building of Arabella and wish you all the best of happiness the world can offer you plus we send you ❤️ from the Netherlands.
    Best regards,
    Willeke and Dick de Graaff

Steve as a long time follower of A2A man I appreciate your explanations of even the small stuff, now as a 20+ year experienced Refrigeration and A/c service technician you explained the basics of Refrigeration flawlessly. I could not have simplified and said it any better. Though it is much more complex the way you explained it should make perfect sense to even folks with no back ground in that field.
The Boat is coming along beautifully y'all keep up the good work. That means you to KP best wishes guys hope you enjoy the summer.

About the Lego, I dissagee with KP. You can buy Lego brick boxes with different general assortemnts of stones. At least in my part of the wold and of cousre through the internet.

    • @charlesolson9019
      @charlesolson9019 2 года назад +1

Absolutely you can still buy Lego brick boxes. But I must defend the kits, because they're resulted in a much larger variety of pieces being available. Lego was boring when I was a kid because it was all just rectangular bricks.

Looking forward Steve you need to start thinking about equipping Arabella. This is costly exercise when you are assembling everything from teaspoons to telescopes (or binoculars) and rugs to radios. Living in England we reckon to pay about £10,000 to be fully equipped. This does not include personal equipment.

I see no drain (yet) for your fridge/freezer. Condensation from dehydration of food stuffs, warming and cooling of the evap plates, opening and closing of lids, all will introduce moisture into your reefer. This will collect on the bottom creating a guaranteed source of food contamination for any item sitting on the bottom of the box.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  2 года назад +1

It’s been recommended that we not add any holes that might increase the chance of air exchange. We figure we can add one later if we want.

@@AcornToArabella Awareness is key! Just a suggestion, install top to bottom suction tube(s), accessible from one or both lid openings. Using a wet/dry vac to suck the accumulated condensate out. Do devise some sort of grate to keep your food off the bottom. Also give some thought to installing a circulating fan to equalize the the stratified temps in both your freezer and especially the fridge section. Compressor runs less and fruits and veggies last longer!

@@AcornToArabella 2nd drain, you can plug the line inside and outside, there are vent trap drains act like your sink trap. At least a bottom lattice to keep stuff out of it.

If you would like, I have left over from my cruising days, 4 new never used Adler-Babour vertical ice cube trays. They go up against the cooling plate and are held against the plate by a long spring. They make your sundowners a joy to behold. If you would like them let me know.
