It is a real testament to the quality of this project and the integrity of Steve that Robbie Doyle made the approach rather than the other way around. To have one of the top sail makers in the world design and make the sails for a "home" made boat is amazing. I guess the thing is that Robbie Doyle does not need Acorn to Arabella for any reason other than he sees it as a great fun project that is worthy of his support. All credit to him and what a great honour of Steve.

I am not a sailor or a sports fan for that matter, and you have drawn me to your adventure. A true testament in your ability to have people at the top of their field want to help with the project and join in your vision. Your team is amazing and just keeps getting better.

The saddest part of this project coming to a finish is we are going to miss all these characters you've collected along the way, steve! Hey in all seriousness though, I hope as you learn to sail, you take us along! I'll never sail in my lifetime, but as a person who loves to know, I've always wondered how sailing works! Love you all very much!
Great episode - it's a real inspiration to see these guys who are the best in their field but still real enthusiasts who love what they do and have fun talking about it. Can't wait to see them again! Greetings from the UK from someone who's been following your story since the keel was poured...
Very exciting to see Keith and Robbie collaborating on the the spar and sail plan. Arabella is gonna move quickly through the water. Love the gaff design with the topsails, Arabella is going to look extra pretty under full sail. You won't regret using a high quality track slide on the mast vs. mast hoops.
That's pretty awesome that Steve and Robbie Doyle has come along and willing to offer his vast knowledge and expertise to help you design and build your sails and rigging, what an opportunity. Your blessed man, really blessed Your going to have a excellent boat that will be capable of going and doing just about anything you desire to conquer. That's wonderful news it really is. Congrats to you all looking forward to witnessing this journey. That's so cool.
Nice to see people buying into a project just for the love of it. Most often someone goes into a line of work with a passion and slowly it deteriorates into nothing but profit and loss.

That was amazing. You guys did a great thing easing us into the “this is not going to be an old fashion rig”. I wasn’t sure that would go down smoothly but here we are! I am an old man now but one day, I will see Arabella. I am very, very proud to be a Patreon and will keep believing that one day I will meet you guys.
@@AcornToArabella I made the Patreon video but for some reason my computer shows me as “Grendel the Jeep”. Technology right? As I said in during the Patreon live feed… when you go to Alaska, stop in Campbell River, BC, I will feed the crew.
I loved this episode! Been sailing since I was a kid but I've never gotten to see inside how the rigging and sail plan are designed and developed. Not to mention getting to see the inside of the Doyle sail loft!! Really enjoyed learning all this and seeing the drawings and 3D modeling to be able to visualize what's to come. And, as a single-hander myself, I'm excited to see what gets built in to help you single-hand all those sails. What a spectacular intermixing of old and new coming to life right before our eyes! Cheers A2A crew! 😃
Top quality sails! I'm familar with them through my employer and the quality and performance is on par with the superyachts themselves. I wouldn't mind visiting them myself but unfortunately I don't live anywhere close to them.
Hi Guy's. wow Robbie Doyle I'm not a Sailor, Have never been on a Yacht, but I've heard of Robbie Doyle, amazing for him to reach out, It just goes to show good things come to good people.
This is probably one of my favorite episodes, these dudes are so impressive with their knowledge. I love talking to people who are mega nerds in their field, I'm so jealous lol
So happy to see you finally start work on the boat rigging and sails. You have found the world experts with Doyle. If you are thinking that you may do single-handed sailing Arabella, you should go try sailing a small boat, first. You said that you had no sailing experience, so now would be the time to start learning to sail. There are thousands of small boats that you can find for learning the basics. One thing you will discover is that having a crew makes sailing sooo much easier. I predict that you will most likely have a crew on Arabella. It will be worth it just having a companion to talk to when you boat is stuck out at sea in a dead calm, and nothing around you but water.
@@AcornToArabella hmm dunno. Best sailinglessons i ever received were on a tiny wooden flatbottom with sliding keels on both sides(oldskool frisian wooden flatbottom sailboats from earlier centuries)...learned how sails and wind actually work and in these tiny tubs you are instantly dead in the water if something is off(sails or skliding keels). ..I hardly ever use my rudder since. Learn in a basic sailboat to get the sailingskills down, it will be a benefit/joy forever. Happy sailing
I really like the combination of those two working together to come up with a complete rig. Not sure if I saw Keith wince when Robbie said make a hollow mainmast, but like he was saying before you visited the sail loft, minimizing your weight aloft is key. You guys were talking about which cart goes before which horse, but you do have the hull lines and scantlings, and your complete rig has to serve that. I'm suddenly way more interested in this project than I had been.
Fantastic episode. This one was great because of the visuals as you're discussing the technical stuff so that the viewer can really understand what's going on. Very helpful for those of us that don't know all the sailing/boating terminology. Excited for you that you have these great partners!
Great news, but you've earned the respect of these great craftsmen who want to be part of seeing you sail a fine sailing vessel around the world. I can't wait to see the boat under full sail ,it will be one of those life moments a person will remember for thier entire life. How exciting to know you will have fantastic one of a kind sails ,it's all coming togeather and the reasons for that are the hard work, hours of back breaking labor but most importantly the love that's gone into the building of this beautiful boat. Well done!!!!
This is a really good episode- sooo many moving parts and once on the water and underway the sails are what people will see the most.. plus with the support you’re getting the performance will be first class..
This is pretty exciting stuff. The way you're dealing with the rigging and sails as a group thing makes perfect sense I couldn't imagine doing it any other way. I'm no sailing expert by any means but I'm thinking Arabella is going to be a pretty fast boat. I loved the 3D model of the sails. The gentleman from Doyle sails seemed pretty excited about the whole project. I can't wait to see you guys next June it feels like that's a long way off, relativity is a bummer sometimes.
I fitted an Antal high strength fibre system track and cars to my boat/rig this year. beautifully engineered, super simple, low stack height, strong and low friction. its a great recommendation from Robbie Doyle. recirculating ball tracks/cars are good, but too many moving/wear parts, not as robust and for about of Arabella's size, not needed. Securing it to a wooden mast may need some careful consideration
That sewing machine looks like it is used to stich chain-mail with steel wire! Wow! My grandmother had a foot-peddle sewing machine and I watched her use it when I was a small child. Complexity, thou art a sewing machine...
It's a brilliant move to having the spar guy talk with the sailmaker. Precision Sails are the go-to guys for many people, and have a great reputation but it's clear that Doyle Sails are very much out there and otherworldly. But you will succeed tremendously with these guys. Great work, great decision making.
Gaining traction with the rural approach of "one step at a time". Congrats to having Mr Doyle interested in the Arabella project. Quite the ennoblement of Your efforts and achievements so far I'd say. And quite the ennoblement of Your future plans, too, given his remark about "...didn't want to become a part of *_these people_* going around..." . With the Falcon project (which I followed closely) they showed a very unique, out of the box approach to "weird" ideas without ruling out any option just for its weirdness. Great step towards probably one of the most manageable "Ingrids" with traditional looks ever built so far. Thanks for sharing!
This is amazing how the old-world boat building is getting "top shelf" modern engineering. I'm learning as you build. Land locked in South Dakota. Good luck. Bill K.
This project just keeps getting better and better. How completely amazing to see Robbie Doyle jump into it…..A legendary sailmaking genius comes aboard…..WOW!!!
Great seeing top notch people taking an interest in sail plan of Arabella….in the gaffs of Arabella….and rig of Arabella. Another fine episode, time for me to crash out after having seen my Friday night episode of Arabella. Good night from Scotland.
One of the most interesting episodes. I have sailed a lot and never understood why anyone would spec a complicated Gaff rig over a 'modern' simple Bermuda rig. Now I know!
While there’s simplicity in the number of lines and sticks, having the highly tensioned rig that’s needed for Marconi presents its own complications. It’s all a tally sheet and down to preference.
Wow!! Robbie Doyle calls you and wants to make your sails!!! If you ever had any doubts about your goals and the legitimacy of this project, you can get rid of them. I've been following you here since the beginning. I would imagine that you had no idea when your were lofting Arabella's lines on the floor, how incredible the journey would become. And when Arabella is sailing the world somewhere, the incredible journey will continue. Great job and thanks for bringing us along. And by the way, if I were talking to Robbie Doyle in his loft and office, I don't think I could have carried on a coherent conversation, I'd be too blown away.
You have been blessed to get the best sail maker around to design your rigging. She will be the best that you can make her. I think people everywhere will be amazed at her speed. Can't wait to hear the sound of the wind in her sails. That and the ocean will be the most addicting thing you will ever do.
This is fantastic. From a technical perspective, a lot of it was a bit over my non-sailor head, but I know there were some questions about how everything to do with the sails was going to fall into place. So good to see a plan develop. It gives me hope for some of the things I'm working on myself.
@@AcornToArabella I'm working on a memoir. I've never written something like this before, and there's a lot of learning on the fly for me. I'm learning a lot about myself and the writing process, and am trying to tell the story in way which will be as meaningful for my potential readers as the experiences were for me as I lived them. In addition, part of the writing process these days - especially for an unknown author - is building an audience or following prior to publication. So, I am going to try to keep up with a social media presence (likely RUclips and TikTok) to share the experience, grow a community of people interested for whatever reason, and see what I am finally able to produce. Along the way, I still plan on dropping a video about the trip I took to see y'all and Arabella last winter. LOL, while I find writing to be a challenge, I find successfully editing a video to be a miraculous occurrence! The specific thought I had when making my original comment on this video was because at the moment, I'm having difficulty seeing how two parts of my story will come together in the way I need them to. Kind of like you all seemed to be experiencing with the sail and rigging. I know I'll figure it out, and this particular video reminded me it's part of every creative process. You all continue to inspire me, and I hope to be able to make it up that way again.
After watching this episode, I for one feel that your rig is going to be epic. To have that amount of experience on the team will ensure a set up capable of taking all you can throw at it.
Doyle sails are a fine choice indeed. Back when we sailed our 6-metre (SWE 101 "Marilyn" built by and for P Norlin in 1982) our best sails where always the Doyles, and the spinnackers even more than so. Congrats!
That's awesome!!! Doyle is a huge name to have attached and complimenting this beautiful boat. Can't wait to see those sails and Keith's Masts and Spars!!!
I love how traditional most of your build is but... Don't be afraid to go modern with the rig, it will be well worth it and make the boat just that much better! Cheers and thanks for another great video, this one was very special.
That’s the idea! A balance of what’s best and what can be done. We have wood: so it’s a wooden hull. We’re able to do a few modern takes on the rig, so that’s on the table. Thanks for the kind words, James!
This channel is simply awesome and just gets "awesomer!" Subject matter, production quality, personalities... all top notch. My knowledge of sails and sailing is mediocre but the discussion on the merits of gaff rigs took me by surprise. I can't wait to see what a cutting edge team of sailmakers, sparmakers and riggers come up with to make Arabella traditional and trendy at the same time.
What an exciting visit to Robbie Doyle's sail loft facility! He's your man I'm sure Steve. KP looked awed after the visit lol The rigging , spars and sails are going to be fascinating to watch their creation.
I have watched and enjoyed every episode and to me this was so interesting to hear and see both Steve with the mast explanation and Robbie with his opinions on sails. To me, Arabella has drawn so many talented people together to see this dream come true.
What a great episode. I'm so impressed with the expertise Mr Doyle and team, especially Keith, brings to the project. How do I know? I read the comments...there are so many fans, including really experienced fans, that share their experiences, that gives me the confidence that Steve is the Man.

Possibly, just possibly, my most favourite episode thus far. Thanks to you all.
Wow! Thank you John!
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
See ya Friday!
This is amazing how the old-world boat building is getting "top shelf" modern engineering. I'm learning as you build. Land locked in South Dakota. Good luck. Bill K.
Thanks for watching, Bill!
I've heard of Robbie Doyle and I'm not a sailor, plus I live in Australia. World famous indeed.
Mr. Doyle has seen so much and his xp put into the Arabella is going to make her sail smooth. So happy for you guys to have people with the know-how.
This project just keeps getting better and better. How completely amazing to see Robbie Doyle jump into it…..A legendary sailmaking genius comes aboard…..WOW!!!
🙌
Great seeing top notch people taking an interest in sail plan of Arabella….in the gaffs of Arabella….and rig of Arabella. Another fine episode, time for me to crash out after having seen my Friday night episode of Arabella. Good night from Scotland.
Good night! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much, Ed!
Your music curation is always very good. Thanks. It adds to the oveall experience.
Ben, our editor, writes the music. There’s a link in the description for his band camp page.
I’m not a sailor by any means of the term. This video explained some of my ‘mystery’ about sails. Thank you.
Whatcha workin on, Jeff?
Congrats!
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Amazing video, great to get the detail on the spars and sails. Thats fantastic news about Doyle offering sails, what a top bloke.
We’re very grateful.
That's awesome!!! Doyle is a huge name to have attached and complimenting this beautiful boat. Can't wait to see those sails and Keith's Masts and Spars!!!
Loved that quote Steve, never heard it before. So true.
A man in love with his work!
It’s a lovely thing to see and be a part of.
Massively cool guys!
This is ASTOUNDING. Such an amazing process to witness
Thanks, Danny!
What a awesome community of knowledge and sharing; it doesn't get much better...
Kudos to Doyle sails. My own experience, on a tiny project, was also very positive.
Thanks for this thoughtful comment, Jim!
Good video, lots of news. Great to Get inside of Doyle loft. You are really lucky to get get his input.
Happy Friday from Plymouth UK
What an exciting visit to Robbie Doyle's sail loft facility! He's your man I'm sure Steve. KP looked awed after the visit lol The rigging , spars and sails are going to be fascinating to watch their creation.
That 1 1/4" T track will work great for you. Lots of options on cars, slides, pin stops (depending on track) & high load capabilities.
Yes, they’re very versatile.
Happy Friday 🎉
Haaaaaappy Friday, Harold!
We have a smart community here.
Mr. Doyle is incredible!
Another fabulous episode. Great additions to the Team.
