Strip building, for us, is cost-effective, materials-conscious, and practical. Where a wooden boat builder might not have wide, clear, stock, this approach would work- but also, hulls are built this way for both strength and affordability. It's also very repairable, which is important if you're taking a DIY approach to wooden boat ownership.
All of the superstructures on Arabella will be strip-built, which we show this week. We're starting to get into "no gluing season" here in the United State's northeast corner, and so it's important for us to boogie on these elements that rely on epoxy for their success.
Pretty soon, because of this closing weather window and in an effort to stay warm as we finish interior elements this winter, we will be fiberglassing the cabin trunk and finishing off these pieces. We'll also be gluing the main mast together. Keep an eye on here during the coming weeks!

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Not very 'traditional', but if you want to increase the light coming in through that 'periscope' hatch, make the final coat on the inner walls 'Chrome Aluminum'. The mirror like finish will reflect even incidental light down into the cabin just like a 'light tube' in a woodland cabin... 😛

Wow that cedar is so light that I might have gone for a clear/bright finish on the underside of the cabin top instead of paint. I know white paint will make it lighter and brighter inside the boat, but the cedar was already pretty light itself, and a bright shiny finish may have been enough to reflect light around. But hey, it isn't my boat. Y'all do you, Steve. You're doing something I could never do, as I am disabled and far too broke to even consider starting. I am still in awe of your project years after starting to watch this channel. Just sending my two cents worth as always. I know you appreciate viewer's thoughts. I'm not telling you how to do it, just sharing my thought on what my choice may have been. Still living the channel after years of viewing. Sorry I fell behind. Lost my cell and internet for a bit do to a high heating bill after a sub-zero freeze spell hit the bank book. Had to fill the propane tank and catch up on the other bills the following pay period.

    Dear Arabellas acorns.
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic again and as always (video and work). A lot of progress is shown in this video. I love the nailed and glued together house top and hatches. Very sturdy and good looking too. It definitely mustn't always be expensive teak wood or something similar. Additionally I love the fact, that you always try to use every piece of wood. And even the not usable rest is still used as fire wood. By the way: I wonder if... uhm... looking back you could've built a wood pellet/wood briquette press. There is always sooooo much saw dust and wood shavings. Maybe it's still not too late for such a device. 😇 And maybe your old ingenious metal specialist and your grandfather would like to build such a contraption. I bet that your young neighbor would love to feed the machine. I guess, that "Arabella's wood pellets/briquettes" would sell well.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all of you (including Akiva of course).

A quick tip for getting excellent epoxy flow into small cracks is to spread it, the quickly hit it with moderate heat from a heat gun. If using slow cure, the batch can be warmed first. These techniques can drastically reduce the viscosity for long enough for capillary action to pull the epoxy into areas it will never get to otherwise.

I plan to send postcards along as you have recommended, from here in Massachusetts and from where I live and sail in Maine. Keep making people smile! You do that for us, too. With ❤️ from Massachusetts.

Loving the episode as usual. I'm sure you will have considered it but the sheets of the foresails forever getting snagged on a forehatch is a real pain in the proverbial. Regular trips to the foredeck especially in big weather are not much fun.

The staysail boom will swing over it, and the jib sheets already need to be passed between the forestay and staysail stay… as Steve says, having a little extra room will be nice and the height of the strips as we see them here isn’t final… we built above the final height, of course.

👌let it bake👍interested to see if you vacuum bag the layup.

Nope! Vacuum bagging is for when you’re laminating many layers and want all the material impregnated. This will be fiberglass sheathing… wetting out the surface, followed by flow coats is sufficient. -Anne
