Boat Work: Roller Furler and Lazy Jacks - Episode 279 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • For those of you missing some of the woodworking and boatbuilding projects, we get to some much-anticipated DIY projects while at the mooring in Portland, Maine, such as getting the cherry wood winch bases cut to size, shaped, and installed on the coamings. Spoiler alert, they're beautiful.
    Other projects tackled: Lazy jacks were installed, and Steve does a cool hardware trick to get the rings he needed for them. It involves stainless steel chain. The roller furler for the furling jib has lengths of stainless steel that need to be cut to size and screwed to each other. Ever used Loctite AND 3M 5200 on a particular thing? This is definitely a measure 8 times cut once scenario, considering how very right it works when it's right, and how very wrong it can go if it's a little off-size.
    A sunset sail?! Don't mind if we do! Thanks for coming out, friends.

    Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    If there was ever a more naturally suited "land lubber/ civilian" in the world to instantly insert themselves into the life and become a great sailors and sailboat owner, I now know that such a person would be a mountain climber! Congratulations Steve,, you're a natural and you'll be a great sailor! DD

    Happy Friday Steve and everyone else who worked on Arabella,
    Willeke and I think it's great that Arabella has received Lazy Jacks and a furling jib sail. The only thing that can be added if necessary is a spinnaker sail. We also hope that all technical sailing terms have been properly translated so that we appear to be somewhat understandable. We look forward to your next vlog in which we hopefully will see Arabella sailing under full sails plus we send you love from the Netherlands

    Hello Steve and the team. I know there is no accounting for taste. But have you considered painting in white the chainplates, on the hull. I know that bronze is nice particularly on a "vintage boat" but I think that the horizontal line of the hull is "damaged" by the vertical bars drawn by the dark chainplates. Appart from that, I have nothing to say. You have built a marvelous boat and you can only be congratulated for that. Best regards from France,

    Steve, you have probably figured this out by now but, don't forget to consider how the battens will line up when you are raising the sails. Often the batten can get caught on the wrong side of the LJ when raising the sail. The remedy is to move the LJ's a bit forward and/or always be vigilant when raising the sail to avoid it. The sails look beautiful, Doyle is to be commended. Also, cleats (closed) are usually a better attachment solution for LJ. Cheers, you have a beautiful boat there. Reminds me a bit of the 30' Tahiti Ketch I sailed from Hawaii to San Francisco back in the 70's. It was all, and I mean all, wooden (Teak and Mahogany); it was slow, gaff rigged and solid. I wasn't in a rush in those days.

  • @kevinvey9474
    @kevinvey9474 10 месяцев назад

    I was really amazed that storage bags for the main, mizzen and staysail weren't incorporated in the initial build. Never been a fan of cleats on a boom. Consider reefing down hauls that are operated from the cockpit. Doyles foils are top notch, narrow good sail shape when at full deployment and reduction. Rigging is always for worst conditions especially for offshore duty. The greatest joy is when sail set in 20 knot breeze an the helm isn't touched

    • @AcornToArabella

  • @headmaxify
    @headmaxify 10 месяцев назад +3

    I have never seen winch blocks fastened to the cockpit coamings. On boats I have sailed there was some serious load on the winches which were bolted through the deck into the structure of the boat. Are Arabella's cockpit coamings just massive or are the winches used differently?

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  10 месяцев назад +2

      The coaming, besides being large, has massive brackets that will be through-bolted, doing basically what you’re saying but from even wider positions. Seems solid to me, and solid to the crew when in use. -Anne

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella 10 месяцев назад

      @@AcornToArabella I think also that people don't realise that the sheet loads are way lower on a traditional rig. In the case of a cutter the headsails are much smaller both in area and in aspect ratio (ie shorter hoist in relation to girth) than a modern headsail on a similar sized boat, and because the boat is less close-winded, they are also never sheeted as hard. Often a tackle is sufficient and winches can be dispensed with altogether.

      @AcornToArabella  10 месяцев назад

      It does have that, it’s just that it’s the same color as the sail. 👍 basically it’s a sacrificial layer that can be repaired or replaced without taking the leech apart. -Anne

    That Mark 4 has been a great furler for Satori. The only issue is how much it gets loaded when close hauled, so it can be a bit challenging to roll up in 20+ knot winds. I will sometimes turn dead downwind with a reefed main and that completely unloads the jib so it's a snap to roll. Just have to be careful with the main because it's on the verge of jibing.

    The high cut clew on the job may not be the easiest thing to take to windward, but Arabella is going to sail like a dream when she's 4 sail reaching!

    I've actually been seasick in that harbor. One of several places I've chosen to be seasick. Side trip during a conference at UNH.

    Lovely! Steve's skills, patience, and tenacity put him right in his element, whether workshop, boathouse, or up the mast. This is going to be even better - how is it possible?

    Good to see the jib up and yes a great tagline from Ben as always. I always thought furlers were electric, but that looked like rope operated? I am already subscribed to K.P.'s channel and for those that aren't it is short, concise, but great content. Looking forward to the restoration. I remember K.P. being so excited at Mattapoisett when sharing the news.

      Hi Andrew! Happy Friday :) Yes, furlers can be electric but a vast majority are simply a drum rigged with a line around it, either wound around like a spool, or a continuous loop of line (check out this week's video). Cheers to you, hope everything's going great where you are! -Anne

      @@AcornToArabella Hello Anne, lovely to hear from you and I hope you are doing well xx.. All good in Chilly Ontario, after an excellent summer. Thanks for the furler information. As an aside, I just opened up my little credit card wallet and came across Make Space by KP business card. It did make me smile as I forgot I had it and watched the video just last night.

    The Doyle sails are magnificent. I have seen Doyle sails on catamarans built in Korea

    Steve, us fans have watched you do this over what 7 (Freaking SEVEN) years. I have to believe having the channel helped keep you from quitting. Were there times you looked in the mirror thinking you're crazy for continuing?

      I don’t think Steve has ever been to the point of literally quitting, no, and if he was to quit something it wouldn’t be the boat, but maybe the channel. He loves the community we’ve built but making the videos is a lot of work! We’re glad to be telling the next chapter! -Anne

    I suggest that you learn to make soft shackles with dyneema. These are simple and fast to make and should be a part of your tool kit as they can solve many problems on any boat.
