The forward hatch gets trimmed to its final size and holes for deadlights are cut. It was tall, and now it's less tall and looking way more proportional to the cabin trunk. As per usual, there's a little bit of conversation around final decisions for it, and so KP and Annie B weigh in.
Part two of turning Great-Grandpa's front yard tree into Arabella's wooden main mast reveals our plan for putting electrical items up at the top of the mast-we glued blue electrical conduit right up the middle to make it easy to chase wires. We re-assemble this disassembled tree into a final glue-up stronger than the tree would have been with its heartwood, sapwood, and other imperfections removed.
Lots of glue, lots of progress. Happy Friday!

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I’ve never tried to build a boat but I’ve watched many boat builds on RUclips. I’ve probably seen 10,000 various clamps in use now. I’m tempted to try building a 20-26’ sailboat but where to I find 3 tons worth of clamps? Can I use them for ballast when I’m done?

Speaking as a Bowman with many years experience, we are used to having to perform the impossible at the pointy end whilst the boat is at 45 degrees, the gunwhales are 2 foot under green water, it is throwing hailstones into our faces at 60 knots and the rest of the crew are comfortable seated in the warm dry cockpit shouting 'advice' as to the best way to do an inside hoist with an outside peel. To be able to turn a light on would make everything better!
Seriously though - a light on the foredeck is a good idea.

Deck lights are very useful when under sail in close proximity to bigger ships…they light up the sails and make you very visible.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  Год назад +3

I was told once by a very experienced sailor that one of the worst things that you can possibly do, especially in a particularly rough sea state, is to turn on deck lights. It tends to make stuff look scarier than it is, and it ruins your low-light vision. When wanting to be more visible, shining a light on the sails from the deck is an option for smaller boats that aren’t required to have nav lights. In the case of nav lights, they give other boats all the information they could want and need. You can tell if a boat is changing direction or course, you can tell if it’s coming toward or away from you, you can tell if they’re sailing or steaming, and a great many other things, in the case of working boats, which have a few more lights that tell what they’re doing in different combinations. -Anne

I know the routine of going to the grocery store all covered in sawdust. My son and I were bucking up a huge Balsam fir tree and had to run to the store for water & electrolytes, at the register the cashier was nearly beside herself as she blurted out “You guys smell SO GOOD.” She was a bit embarrassed but we all got a laugh.

The forward house/hatch is consistent with the looks of the classic Bristol Channel Cutter. You can't get much more traditional than that design. Having owned and sailed on lots of boats with less than comfortable standing headroom, you've made a great decision.

That shortened the lifespan of your power unit by 25%, now the fan blades, their ball bearings and cooling fins are full of fine wood dust. As an additional bonus, now you and your wife get to listen the fun "Wheeeeee, Wrrrrrrrr" sound of the dirty fan blades and fouled ball bearing of the power bank for few years the unit has has left.
Another fan killer and noise maker is grease from cooking.
If you plan of doing sanding and cooking inside the boat, I would recommend putting all electronics with cooling fans into cabinet with air filters on air intake. Or into space outside of the cooking & woodworking space with it's own air circulation. Fiberglass or pleated filter canvas does not cost much and you can even re-use them several times taking them out and vacuuming or washing them.
P.S. If you vacuum the cooling fans, lock the fan blades with a toothpick (or something softer) to prevent them from spinning when you vacuum them. Fans might get damaged if fans spin freely when vacuumed. Preventative maintenance of the fans is very small amount of work compared to to the problems with them. Specially if you plan to sleep in the same space where the fans are.

I used to be a cable puller by trade. I would suggest you leave a nylon pull string in the mast conduit at all times. it is a lot easier than a fish tape. Just make sure as you are using the pull string to add a cable, you pull a new pull string in with it. Also you can use the vacuum cleaner method to put suck the string into the conduit.

*- The feel of the hatch is right for multiple of reasons, Steve.*
*- Your athletic sense of music serves you well.*
*- You feel the move of things, just as curves have harmony of movement.*
*- The higher/taller crowning fits with the more shallow camber of the deck*
*- The Parthenon was "crowned" so its optical illusion looked flat*
*- The hatch's optically the rounder curve works correctly with the broad, flatter cabin roof line.*

I already have the mast for the Goeller 12' dinghy I intend to build at some time in the future. Its a fir mast taken off of an early 20th century dinghy that was owned and sailed on by my grandfather. However, as I've been watching this project for a couple of years, now, I know that trees have so many imperfections, knots, inclusions, and other stuff that would make a strong living tree into weak wood after it's been dried.
That thing, where Steve's hired Expert Mast Builder (forgive me for not remembering his name for this comment), build's into the mast that conduit with the Smurf tube, was pure genius, or maybe it was pure years of expertise, or maybe it was one of those instances of knowhow passed from generation to generation in mast building... Either way, it was (for me) a head nodding moment, as I could see the wisdom of that design feature.
It was nice seeing some of the volunteer-passers-by lending a hand during the Big Glue Up! Obviously, they've been watching this project for quite a long time and went to the actual site to see it with their own eyes! They're lucky! They get to show off to their friends, "That's me in the video! I got to help build this boat!"
For me, this was a really, really, cool episode, and Steve and the gang get to live it everyday!
One day, when you're old and grey, and unable to continue your adventures, Steve, you'll be able to get a good return on your investment when you sell this boat.
    1) Your boat has a whole video series on how it was built.
    2) The video series shows EVERYTHING! Everything from selecting and cutting down of trees, to milling of said trees, to the actual building of the boat, and all of the inner secrets of the construction of the boat.
    3) You'll be able to tell the prospective boat buyer, "Watching these videos will let you know exactly how your boat was built, and what you need to do to repair or remodel it..."
If that doesn't wow your prospective future boat buyer, I don't know what would!
Alright. I've just realized that I've started to write a book, again. So, I'll end it here. I will admit that I may have been sightly influenced by a little drink, but somehow, this episode really hit me, more so than other episodes.
You and the crew have turned a new corner on your boat building journey, and the end goal has just now come into view. You still have a very long way to go, but you can see the goal line from where you now are.
Congratulations to you, Steve, and to your crew! And now, I'll stop typing.

@@AcornToArabella This Old House vibes. But where it exceeds and excels is the audacity of the project. When I saw a thumbnail of a couple of youtubers pouring a multi ton keel in their backyard, well that's a helluva hook. And then the perseverance to keep going. Most of these projects are born to fail.
The exposition stays on task consistently. Where much of reality including sports television fails is they try to hard to increase audience and veer the scope from what created the audience in the first place. Example, Olympics where we see more biography than sports. Your choice to keep the star of the show, the boat, in focus for years (I've watched nearly every episode) is outstanding. The exposition of cast/crew is primarily around their relationship to the process and the boat. You're judicious when it varies beyond that. The shows that aren't focused on the build are outliers and as such aren't unwelcome. Sometimes you need a show for the algorithm, we get it. The ethos of honesty indicates a high degree of respect for the audience you've built.
Bit rambling, tough to edit on mobile, not being near a PC.
      Keep on keeping on.

Atkins would certainly approve of the upgrades you have made to his original design. He lived in his era, you live in ours. Being openminded, he would have adopted the new materials & adhesives that are available to you now. An example from history! If medieval stone masons had had access to sheets of corrugated iron roofing materials to roof the cathedrals they built instead of sheets of lead, which material would they have adopted? Please carry on with your dream. Success is a journey, not a destination.

It occurred to me as I was watching the instrumentation that you guys are going to have in place at the top of the mast, that since you’re making an ongoing RUclips channel of your travels, you might want to put A permanent camera up there so that it can give you a birdseye views of the deck below

You're so worried about the looks of the hatch but honestly I don't think it looks bad at all. Also if it makes you more comfortable that's going to be a huge benefit. You're going to be living in this boat and what's really going to matter is how much you like living in it not how much you like looking at it. Although I'm sure the latter does have a role :-)

Wow. That mast is some structure! So glad to see you using a conduit for services inside it, My 38 years in telecom cabling taught me the value of a pipe/conduit/sleeve, whether it's in a wall, underground or even loose in a ceiling. I'm just not sure about the corrugated pipe, it could just catch on a draw wire..You never know when you may have to do an upgrade or repair...think about the next guy to work on that?

We *are* the next guys 😉 so far, we have enjoyed the conduit as we have used it for electrics inside Arabella. We suspect that we will have good luck with it in the mast as well.

Nice conduit choice, but a smooth conduit would have been easier to fish through. Beware the bore through the center of the mast, it will obstruct your conduit. You must keep that in mind.
