100 Year Old Schooner Relaunched After a 4 Year Restoration - Episode 317

- Back in Lewiston, Maine, Steve returns to the boathouse to assist with some last-minute work for the launch of schooner Hindu.
There are very few boats along the Eastern Seaboard that have worked in the charter industry for as long as Hindu. The timing of her launch coincides with her 100th year on the water-pretty special!
Josh Rowan, Erin Desmond, and the crew have spent the last 4 years in the boathouse working on Hindu, while also preserving her original spirit.
Josh has been a sailor for quite some time, and fell in love with Hindu in the early 2000s. Years later, Josh and Erin took on the project of fully restoring the schooner to bring her back to the sea. After years of tireless work by the crew, it’s time to bring her back to work.
Schooner Hindu gets a ride down the road to the boatyard, and Steve gets to work in the cockpit. The following day, she sets sail.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the Hindu project!

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

So good to see Anne sailing on the boat she worked so hard to help build!
Aw shucks, thank you. -Anne
Thanks, Ben, for your many skills over these years.
Thanks so much!
Amen. He’s a *uck@ng genius. Hey A2A buddies
Agreed! Ben, you continue to contribute wonderfully to this channel with your voice, music, eye for editing, and thematuc sense for each 'installment'. Cheers!
Wow! Hindu has beautiful lines. God bless you, Steve, for your willingness to sacrifice/delay your dreams for the sake of your Mom. This is genuine manhood and genuine love.
Watching last weeks video where Robin was trying to get Akiva to do his "business" on the green fake grass made me think Steve should have built a "poop deck" on the stern of Arabella, ha ha.
Happy sailing
cheers from the UK
I saw Bob Emser and Anne and another member of your crew at the Mystic boat show this weekend and asked about your mom. Best wishes to her and the rest of you in this difficult time. I have followed Arabella from the time she was just trees in your back yard. Your journey has been such an inspiration. Be well and keep sailing!
So glad you stopped by. -Anne
Hindu has beautiful lines. Hope I get to see her under sail someday. She just looks fast even when sitting still.
Great to see Steve back in a boathouse, on the tools, and making sawdust.
I have to absolutely agree that seeing Anne on A is just so perfect. She's definitely earned her passing. The Hindu with no prop shaft threw me for a loop. Obviously had a plan. Too bad they didn't have a channel unless I've just completely missed out.
Absolutely fantastic video, gang. Nice to see and hear Anne again, I was getting worried we'd have to call the Coast Guard to find her. So glad to see she's doing well. Watching Steve work on Hindu brought back memories of some other boat-building channel I used to watch. 🤭 Watching Arabella hit the water for the first time really allowed me to appreciate all the joy and excitement the crew of Hindu felt at launch. Anchors aweigh!!!
What happened to Anne? Did she get married from a three hour tour on another boat?
Fun to see Hindu hit the water. It looks like they have about “two years” of work before she’s ready.
This was such a great episode. Some boat building, a launch, and some good ol fashioned sailing.
I have to say how grateful I am to be able to see a boat like Hindu and be able to appreciate the amount of passion that goes into restoring and launching a wooden boat like that. This channel has opened my eyes to the world of wooden boats and I am so grateful.
My very first time in a sailboat was in 1979 on a schooner that sailed out of Provincetown. I don’t remember the name of the boat. But I will never forget the feeling I got when the engine was turned off and as the sails filled with air, the boat heeled slightly and we began silently moving. Forty five years later I’m still sailing and still get that feeling. Thank you for stirring my memories!
............G'day Crew,
what an absolute pleasure to see old boats returning to the sea restored.
Cheers and God bless,
Malcolm.
Great seeing Anne again. Hindu looks a fine craft. Great video Ben as usual.
Hiya Iain! -Anne
@@frompinetopalm good to see you again. I still have the drawings you sent me. The plan was to put a model of Arabella into a bottle. Sadly it won’t be as dramatic as a three or four masted sailing ship. It’s still in the pending file.
You take care and be safe.
Iain
Great to see her back where she belongs. We sailed on her several times while vacationing in Key West. Helped haul the main on our last trip. Josh’s was fulls of tales of her historic past. Now she can ply the waves into the future. 14:20
I've wrestled with this,, actually telling you how much your channel means to me! I was born , raised in Frisco,, now in Pitts, Pa,, love the water!! Older now, , I gotta pontoon now, but,, if, I really need to build a boat?,, You taught me how to,.. carry on Cap'n, great stuff!
Hello Steve and Robin! Another fine episode. Praying for you and your family and mom especially.
Thank you, a great synopsis as alway.
Great job Josh. She has her shape back. Gorgeous lines. So sorry I wasn't there.
enjoy the beauty of this new day. a new day never before used, to be filled with new hopes and old one too. best wishes from ball-acre farm.
Great Video! Thanx for sharing.
Hi All, Happy Friday and A2A day. From Plymouth UK
Hindu looks amazing, but what an unusual steering position, at the stern, but angled astern. Great to see Annie B and Scott and also the Brownells Lift Truck.
Nice to see Thomaston and Rockland, briefly
great video
Was lucky enough to take the helm of Hindu down in Key West years back. Beautiful boat.
Out for a sail just to have a sail. Lovely!😊
Happy Friday from Normandy...cheers...rr
It is great to see something coming back to life. Hindu is a nice-looking boat.
Happy Friday, 'bella fam! ☕
Once again; thank you for the creative original music.
Boat hoists are amazing.
What a beautiful boat. The lines of the hull are stuff dreams are made of.
Ben as always, a great job here with all of it. I lived the music and narration. You have changed a lot too since you took this progect on eh? Your music is not quite the same. What a terrific job you have done and I hope you are incredibly proud of all this.
Looking forward to seeing you and The Hindu back in KW!!!
always need to include the hoisting the sail shots. lol
Great video. I wonder what part of the experience do you enjoy the most, building or sailing? In this episode you got to do both just for fun. Living your best life. Still praying for your family especially your mom.
Outstanding!
I believe that you meant Thomaston, Maine and not Lewiston, Maine. I enjoy your videos and have seen every one. Can't wait to see more!
Twas in error. You are correct.
Love it 😍
Steve, this had to be a little Deja-vu 😳
Great episode on a schooner whose rebuild I have been watching unfold over the past few years! Correction on location, though: the rebuild took place in Thomaston, not Lewiston.
Yep. Sorry bout that.
That is one sexy ship.
Certainly not ready
But ready for a scheduled USCG stability test. -Anne
I'm not sure why they launched his boat so prematurely? Lots of work on deck, painting varnishing, interior, spars, etc, etc. Best wishes on completion!
They were probably set a day to vacate the work shed.. maybe another job or someone bought out the yard... They might have just run low on money to keep paying rent.
Big projects run up against
Unexpected complications.. 🤷🏻🧙🏻♂️ she floated and they got her away so hopefully they have a plan C.
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Given that the boat is renewing a certificate of inspection (COI) from the USCG to carry passengers, the boat was launched to do a stability test after so much material has been replaced. -Anne
Quite a restoration. Replacing the boat while preserving the spirit...
Maybe should be Hindu 2
Great video, as usual. I did not follow the rebuild of Hindu, so I don't know why the builders put her in the water. It appears that the Ballast Keel and the rudder needs to be painted before they touch salt water. But there is not a lot that I know.
I won't bother make a flag mention... enough have already. That was cool to see Steve getting to play, relatively stress free (on somebody else's vessel). Nice to see Anne's smile after all her efforts. That Hydraulic trailer is a yard worker's 'wet dream' (forgive the pun). I have a Lott of questions such as: is the rudder alloy or stainless ? Will she keep her WWII era paint job or is that essentially 'fun with the primer/undercoat' ? Didn't Hindu retire from service before the renovation from P-town on the Cape ? Will she return there ? Further comments: It would have been nice to see even a simple brief still shot of the boat mentioned, launched at Mystic. Once again... Josh 'knocks it out of the park with the editing and video production ! :)
I won't do something... but here I am doing it! It's a piece of fabric, get over it.
@@TheAKtracks I have very mixed feelings about considering the flag being merely a '...a piece of fabric,' It is indeed an 'idol'. When I was very young I shared your attitude. I was never in the military / served. Yet as the son of a WWII vet and the grandson of a WWI and II, career military General I hold what she symbolizes as very dear. Yes just a symbol, but what it symbolizes I hold in the highest of respect. A picture of a loved one is merely a 'picture'. It's not the picture itself but rather the subject it represents, the memories of past and dreams of the future. Above all the flag represents those that served and especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice for you to have a 'right' to your opinion, of which I may not agree but there are millions that have paid dearly for your 'right'. Did you notice the paint job on the Hindu ? Does it look ugly to you or do you see it as a beautiful remembrance of those that gave their lives for us and our freedoms ? :)
Good morning Akiva 🐺 and Crew 😸 and to Annie B too 😸 it's been a while , hope you're well 🙏
looks fast
Hey, I'm first to post this time !!
Would Steve consider building another boat?
I'm not sure, but what is the mariner's protocol for keeping "Old Glory" out of the water. Is this the respectful honoring of our National Emblem? Enquiring land loving Americans want to know. Thanks.
Her deck doesn't seem finished. Why put her in the water this early? Wouldn't it be harder to finish her out in the open?
She came right back out of the water. Glassing the deck and then covering boards etc.
I have a question what kind of boat is Hindu? It’s good to see Anne let her know I said hello from Bruce and Joseph.
Hello hello Bruce and Joseph! Hindu is a schooner. -Anne
CG-61006? Does the Coast Guard have a new sloop that I am unaware of?
Great video, but so many questions about that beautiful Hindu! Was she ever in Lewiston, or is the caption wrong (should be Thomaston?) Why launching so early? Why just 1 coat of topside paint, red lead primer on the bottom, why the unfinished deck and interior and hatches that would be easier to finish in the boat shop? What's the significance of CG-61006?
Wrong caption. Thomaston is place. Apologies
I was told they had a stability test with the USCG. -Anne
Is this a Ship of Theseus?
💙 🎉 🎉
I believe I sailed on Hindu in Key West as a sunset sail and one of the mates onboard said we just broke a record of 17 kn but I could be wrong
Sorry but i just red monohulls cant turn 360. even though not a true 360, its because we don't add a ballast keel to the rudder itself, and give it a special mechanical rigging allowing the rudder to keel with the boat and still turn. this mechanism would have a lock feature allowing it to act like a traditional rudder. but for racing and sailing in tight areas, this can allow monohull to keel over and turn nearly 360 to get out of dangerous winds. this would allow a ship to snag a strong wind, keel over, and dash in a zag to quickly and shift the other way and so on. this would close the angle of close hauling, allowing for much more speed in headwind conditions. Post edit. If anyone takes this idea mark my words its right here and its mine.
Why did they launch the boat when it has so much to be done to it?
Yard time is expensive, anything that can be done waterborne is should be.
They also had a scheduled stability test with the USCG that had to do with renewing the COI.
Why'd they skip the bottom paint?
Speaking of flags, I have never seen Arabella fly the flag. It matters a lot to some people. If you make it to Nova Scotia, be a good neighbor and fly the flag. And get a courtesy flag.
Not everyone has to be a boot licker
Where is your baggywrinkle?
Thats not lewiston! Hindu was rebuilt in Thomaston.
It was a mental lapse on the editors (my) part. All of the towns with male first names got mixed up.
Way more Boat, than Tally Ho.
What is that style of stern called?
Counter stern? Please check.
That boatshed is in Thomaston Maine not Lewiston.
It sure is. A mistake.
Lewiston or Thomaston?
Ugh. Sorry, it’s Thomaston. I’ve did this one with a broken arm and no fact checkers.
@@AcornToArabellahope you heel up without too much trouble. On the other thing, don’t worry the internet is full of fact checkers. Seriously great job, enjoy the story you tell as much for how it’s told as the story itself.
@@AcornToArabella
😱 OMG. Get well soon.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.
You now need to work on a J-boat.
Flag in the water?
What's her name?
0:49
Thank You😂
@@supergarbonzo4843 👍
Looks like the haul and the deck are done only. Lots of work to be done, have fun and good luck too.
With that much work you'd think they would have done a better job of painting the hull : ugly grey , no boot stripe come on guys ?
Not a fan of the grey topside. Looks like a military vessel. But super sick to see new life in these old boats. We have a wooden morgan 30 about to get chopped up next to us. Everyday I debate if we should drop our boat and revive her.
She's not done. She went in for a stability test and came out shortly after. -Anne
Belive you me the crew building Hindu to new knows what they are doing so if we could keep the questions to a minimal would be nice rebuilding boats are alot harder then building a new boat you know why it's called demo you can't just make a pattern and call in the explosive guy who has less fingers then a handling to loft where would he hold a pencil
You are disrespecting our FLAG. Shame on you . 🇺🇸😭
Anne!
😃hiiiii! -Anne
Kinda cool but i really don’t care about boats I just like you guys after watching for years so eh
Why would they not fix the flag immediately?!?
Not good!
I'm sorry but please keep flag out of water. Come on man.
I wonder if it has a toilet, or if you just poop right on the deck like a proper Hindu would.
10:50 Never dip the flag
Flag in the water is bad form.
Wow! Sailboat with sails.... This seems more disrespectful than the flag dipping....
Right? Would rather they skipped the whole flag thing than drag it in the water. Clueless people.
Why on earth was Hindu launched without any anti fouling on her undersides? It just don’t make sense.
Well perhaps they wanted to get her in the water to check for leaks ! I don’t know any thing about building a huge sail boat, but something tells me those folks running around the Deck do 😳
????? What's all that orange stuff on the bottom?
@@RossWilliamsDC primer
seems like they wanted the "same day as her launch 100 years ago" more than they wanted anything resembling a finished boat.
@@MichaelOnines The boat was also scheduled for a stability test with the USCG. Working boats with a COI are different from private yachts in a lot of ways. -Anne
Shameful treatment of the flag! It should never be allowed to touch the ground or dip into standing water. Disgraceful and disrespectful.
I hope you’ve made everyone feel just terrible and helped them understand how good and respectful you are.
its a piece of cloth, relax. only happens in murica really
Calm down it’s not like it’s the quoran
Get a life
Yeah, so shameful cause you can see they did it intentionally and with great deliberation to make some statement (NOT!!!). No, they noticed it and corrected it. Get a life dude.
Looking forward to seeing you and The Hindu back in KW!!!
