  • Come along as we sail and navigate chilly waters in search of a winter haven for Arabella. We've got some stunning sailing footage for you as we set sail from Sandwich, Massachusetts, with Scott and Jack aboard to crew through the sometimes-treacherous currents of Woods Hole and the challenging waters of Buzzards Bay. Known for its strong currents and weather challenges, this leg of the journey promises excitement and a test of Steve and Jack's seamanship. It's also a great chance for Scott to experience more interesting conditions as he's still learning on the water.
Before their departure, Steve tracks down and repairs a bit of water ingress in the forepeak. He'll be needing an additional rivet, a hot knife, and of course, crossed fingers, as per usual. Boat maintenance is, truly, fun sleuthing.
Thank you for your support, and for everyone who's here every week, leaving a comment. Here for the first time? Subscribe to our newsletter to be sure you see more of our adventures.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Well, there is room for a couple of topsails, to maybe not _quite_ the full suite. And a quick Wikipedia search suggests that it is possible to run something between the masts.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaff_rig#/media/File:Rose_Dorothea-Lipton's_Cup-1907_Fishermen's_Race.jpg shows topsails and the extra one (that I don't know the name of). Admittedly that's a schooner, and the Atkin drawings of Ingrid didn't show topsails. So I might have persuaded myself that I am wrong. 🙂

Just for those wanting to drop the name of every possible sail, this is the sail inventory from the Arabella web site:-
      Rigging and sails
      Rig-Ketch
      Sail Area-816 square feet (jib, 162; staysail, 123; main, 346; mizzen 185)
By my count she is under her full suite of sails in this video.
      You're welcome.

Wow - You went through Woods Hole with a strong current from behind. Living on the edge! I try to only hit it at slack tide, or with a weak current against.
I went through once with probably 3 or 4 knots against because I couldn’t get the engine started, and I didn’t dare try to turn around. But, I was on a good, strong beam reach with steady wind (same tack & heading I’d been on for hours on my way out of Nantucket) and the boat was slowly pushing its way through. I figured I’d sort the motor out when I got into Buzzard’s Bay. Then I start hearing some chatter on the radio about a sailboat aground in Wood’s Hole, so I’m scanning all around and I couldn’t see it. That’s when I realized I was the ONLY sailboat in Woods Hole at the moment - they were talking about me!😅. I radioed that I was doing fine - slow, but fine. The tow boat guy came out and stood by until I got safely out the other end.

Dear Anne, Robin, Steve and all others who worked on Arabella,
Arabella looks absolutely stunning when sailing with full sails. Willeke and I have sen the part of this video where Arabella was sailing twice to give you an idea how much we did love to see this.
A water leak’s source on board is always hard to find since water has the stubborn property of finding its "own" path. It’s therefore clever that Steve found the source.
We already wish you a sparkling change of the year and look forward to to see your vlogs the next year again. We send you love from the Netherlands

Make a loose plans, and don’t put so much pressure on yourself to produce amazing videos. You do a great job, but I’m not sure they need to be as good as they are to be successful. I know how much work editing can be if you let it. I see other channels do way less, and seem to stay consistent.

Thought of you on Friday, Steve and Robin, but mostly of Akiva, as I repaired a gentleman's bicycle that shared your pup's name! I"ve never met someone with that name, and have only before heard it here, the last 5 years or so that I've been following along. My first video was the keel pour, and I've enjoyed every single one since. I've truly enjoyed the journey and the evolution of the channel through all it's iterations (though the original opening song is still the correct one in my opinion ;) Seeing you now sail your dream is truly awesome to watch. A safe and prosperous New Year to Arabella, Steve, Robyn and everyone involved. The transition from build to sail continues with the same spirit and I look forward to following your trials and adventures through the new year and beyond.

I look forward to seeing you using Arabella as a sailing boat with a motor, rather than a motor boat with sails. Doyle have made you some very nice sails.
I can not find the words to describe the pleasure I have received by watching this series from the very start. Thank you...

We load the fireworks barge during the 4th out the shipyard next to the bridge on fish island, and it is a crazy city loud and busy. Good choice on finding something a little quieter.

The pitch is cool, much easier for a repair than Sikaflex for sure. I have a house in Wellfleet Cape Cod built in 1767, and the window openings were splined with pitch soaked rags. Beautiful boat you guys, looking forward to watching some adventures.

There are few things more gratifying than being inside a totally dry boat in pissing rain. I was skeptical of the old school decking method as it was installed, but the merit of it shines through in this episode.
